An account ... of the life of Mahomet, ... and : OCKLEY, Simon (trans). Sentences of Ali[,] son-in-law of Mahomet, ... Third edition.Cambridge, printed for Anne Ockley, by permission of Henry Lintot, 1757. 2 volumes. 8vo. With folding engraved plate. Contemporary calf. Rebacked, using the original spine-labels and new brown endpapers.

ESTC T134350; Gay, Bibl. de l'Afrique et l'Arabe 98; for background information: Arberry, "The pioneer: Simon Ockley", in: Arberry (ed.) Oriental Essays (1997), pp. 11-47. Third edition of Ockley's most famous work, presenting Islamic history from 632 to 705, based on Arabic sources. "One of the most important steps in the introduction of Arab culture to Europe was the decision to use Islamic sources in order to write a history of the Arabs. This step was taken by Simon Ockley. It is based mainly on a manuscript in Oxford [Bodleian Library] wrongly attributed to the historian of the eighth century, al-Waqidi, but in fact composed at the time of the Crusades. Ockley accepted al-Waqidi's authorship, but was also acquainted with other historians such as Ibn Duqmaq, Ibn Abd Rabbah, al-Suyuti and Abu al-Fida" (Hamilton). It was first published in one volume in 1708 as The conquest of Syria, Persia, and Aegypt by the Saracens, dealing with Islamic history under the first three caliphs. Ten years later Ockley published a continuation entitled The history of the Saracens. The present edition was augmented with a Life of Mahomet, sometimes ascribed to Roger Long, but most likely written by Leonard Chappelow. With a 1914 bookplate on pastedown with the owner's monogram "HJK", the motto "semper fidelis" and an open book with "Poles 1913". Some minor browning and in 1 leaf a marginal tear, but still in good condition. The binding is rebacked as noted, but otherwise good.

BILLY RAY'S FARM: With Engravings by Barry Moser.

Wisteria Press,, Decatur, Georgia: 1997 - First edition. Letter "Z" of 26 COPIES BOUND IN FULL LEATHER and housed in handmade clamshell box, each copy SIGNED BY BROWN AND MOSER and with TWO LOOSE LITHOGRAPHS SIGNED BY MOSER in glassine envelope laid in (one is the frontispiece illustration, the other appears opposite the first page of text and is of Brown). The handmade box is by artist Kannex Fung and features heavily textured handmade papers and a small wooden picket fence that becomes a stockade when the box is fully closed. A beautiful, fine-press production. Although Billy Ray, Brown's son, has had persistent bad luck with cattle, in this non-fiction essay featuring dead calves, misbehaving bulls, rampaging coyotes and dilapidated fences, both father and son remain optimistic: "Billy Ray's farm does not yet exist on an earthly plane," writes Brown, but "on Billy Ray's farm there will be total harmony, wooden fence rows straight as a plumb line, clean, with no weeds, no rusted barbed wire." Later collected under the same title in 2001. His first work of nonfiction since his acclaimed ON FIRE. Fine in fine box. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Autograph manuscript prose fragment of 20 lines, "How can there be any short cuts?"

N.p., n.d. (ca 1940s). Brief but powerful passage on originality in art, possibly quoting a published Miller work (but if so, not identified by us). The paragraph begins, "How can there be any short cuts?," and concludes with a statement that very clearly sums up Miller's attitude toward literature and his own artistic production: "...The more unique, the more universal is the work. The truly unique always makes itself understood. It is not our uniqueness, our individuality, that prevents us from being accepted - it is our failure to be so. We too easily compromise." Undated, but based on ink and paper, likely 1930s-50s. Provenance uncertain, but from a search of auction records it does not appear that this item was part of the massive Pacific Book Auctions sell-off of Miller manuscript materials in 1997-9. Twenty-line manuscript, in ink, on recto of single sheet of card-stock. Paper slightly browned and worn at corners; handwriting still bold and clear; unsigned, but in Miller's easily identifiable hand; Very Good.

Seven Pillars of Wisdom: a triumph, the complete 1922 'Oxford' text, three volume limited and numbered edition of 1997

Salisbury, England: Castle Hill Press, 1997. Hardcover. This is the three-volume handsome first Castle Hill Press limited edition of the full 1922 "Oxford" text, set #573 of 752 total and 650 copies issued thus. This edition marks the first time that Lawrence's full text was made available to the public since its original circulation to a select few in 1922. Seven Pillars of Wisdom is the story of T.E. Lawrence's (1888-1935) remarkable odyssey as instigator, organizer, hero, and tragic figure of the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War, which he began as an eccentric junior intelligence officer and ended as "Lawrence of Arabia." This time defined Lawrence with indelible experience and celebrity, which he spent the rest of his short life struggling to reconcile and reject, to recount and repress. Lawrence famously resisted publication of his masterwork for the general public during his lifetime. The saga is remarkable. He nearly completed a massive first draft in 1919, only to lose it when his briefcase was mislaid at a train station. This first draft was never recovered. At a fever pitch, Lawrence wrote a new 400,000 word draft in 1920. This punishing burst of writing was followed by an equally brutal process of editing by Lawrence. In 1922, a 335,000 word version was carefully circulated to select friends and literary critics - the famous "Oxford Text". George Bernard Shaw called it "a masterpiece". Nonetheless, Lawrence was unready to see it distributed to the public. Finally, in 1926, a further edited 250,000 word "Subscribers' Edition" was produced by Lawrence - but fewer than 200 copies were made, each lavishly and uniquely bound. The process cost Lawrence far more than he made in subscriptions. To recover the loss, Lawrence finally authorized an edition for the general public - but one even further abridged and titled Revolt in the Desert. It was only in the summer of 1935, in the weeks following Lawrence's death, that the text of the Subscribers' Edition was finally published for circulation to the general public. However, few people know that the text released to the world as "Complete and Unabridged" in 1935 and which has become so famous is, in fact, a significantly abridged version. The fuller 1922 "Oxford Text" - a third longer - would not be published in an edition available to the public until this 1997 edition. Castle Hill Press took this text from the manuscript in the Bodleian Library and T.E. Lawrence's annotated copy of the 1922 Oxford Times printing. Castle Hill first published a three-volume limited edition of 752 sets of this Oxford Text. Of these, 650 sets were issued thus. The production value is excellent and aesthetically appealing. The large volumes measure 11.25 x 9 inches. The two text volumes are printed on acid-free stock and bound in quarter cream cloth and grey paper-covered boards with green leather spine labels, head and foot bands, green top edge stain, and green endpapers. The Volume I rear pastedown features a pocket bearing two folding, color maps. The third volume contains Illustrations, featuring 41 full-page Seven Pillars portraits (26 in full color as in the 1926 Subscriber's edition) as well as 127 war photographs, mainly from the collection Lawrence formed and presented to the Imperial War Museum. The Illustrations volume is bound in full cream cloth with illustrated endpapers. All three volumes are issued in uniform dust jackets evocative of the original 1935 British trade edition of the shorter text and housed in a dark red cloth slipcase. This set is in fine condition in near fine dust jackets. The volumes appear pristine, Volume II hand numbered "573" by the publisher. The dust jackets are complete with only light wear and fractional closed tears at the spine ends and a few extremities. The dust jackets are now protected beneath removable, archival quality clear covers. The set includes the original January 1998 purchase receipt. Bibliographic reference: O'Brien A034a.

        THE NEW LIFE

New York City, NY: Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 1997. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. New York City, NY: Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 1997. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 296 pages. The author's third novel to be translated into English. One of the greatest novels of our time. The single most successful modern novel to be published in Turkey. The first appearance of the title in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a very small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. It is one of the author's most scarce titles. Presents Orhan Pamuk's "The New Life", his so-called "road novel". The title refers to the way a book transforms the protagonist's life in a magical way, surely a metaphor for the power of reading to change lives. Pamuk's books are censored and often banned outright in his native Turkey, a culture that has to strike a delicate balance between (Eastern) Islam and (Western) secularism. The threat to one's freedom makes writing even more urgent and turns talented writers into great ones. His most passionate critic/admirer in America, the late great novelist John Updike, chose "Snow" as the best novel of the year 2004, bar none. "I read a book one day and my whole life was changed" (Orhan Pamuk). Another masterpiece from a writer who seems incapable of writing a bad book, this is an absolute "must-have" title for Orhan Pamuk collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed and dated (in the year of publication) in black pen on the front free endpaper by the author: "1997 Orhan Pamuk". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Signed copies of Pamuk's books are scarce and as such, have always been collectible. This title is a great book. This is one of very few signed copies of the First American Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Beware: Many copies available online have serious flaws or are subsequent printings. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award in 2003 for "My Name Is Red". Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2006, the first Turkish writer to be so deservedly honored. One of the greatest living writers. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ORHAN PAMUK TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). . ISBN 0374221294.

The Magical Painted Papers of Eric Carle

(Rockport, Maine): Gehenna Press, 1997. Carle, Eric. Quarto. 12ff + 30 leaves containing tipped-in paper samples. Illustrated with a woodcut portrait of Carle by Leonard Baskin. From an edition of forty copies, this is one of thirty that were offered for sale. Illustrated with thirty examples of painted papers created by the author of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Carle reveals in his Artist's Note that his approach to illustration was shaped early on by the use of collage. As he developed his process, he discovered that using acrylic paint on a tissue paper suited him best, and this is how he arrived at the luminescent colors found in his books. With a scholarly essay on paper decorating processes by Sid Berger, which places Carle's work in a larger, historical context. Signed by Carle and Baskin on the colophon, as issued. Although not called for this copy is additionally signed by Berger, who notes that this is the first copy he has signed. Bound by Daniel Gehnrich using Carle's paper for the boards, backed with a black morocco spine, with a painted paper lettering piece. Housed in a cloth folding case. Extremely fine copy of an uncommon Gehenna title.
