        Michael Hartnett.

Ireland, 1997 - Original photograph by John Minihan of irish poet Michael Hartnett on archival paper. Ireland, 1997. 29,5 cm x 19,8 cm. From the library of irish photographer John Minihan. With John's copyright-stamp verso. Signed and titled by John Minihan verso. John Minihan is an Irish photographer, born in Dublin in 1946 and raised in Athy, County Kildare. At the age of 12 he was brought to live in London, and went on to become an apprentice photographer with the Daily Mail. At the age of 15 he won the Evening Standard amateur photography competition. At 21 he became the youngest staff photographer for the Evening Standard. For thirty years he remained in London, returning every year to his hometown of Athy to record the people and their daily lives. The work of Minihan in Athy makes up a large part of his canon. Minihan began taking photos in Athy when he was 16. The photos are an attempt to document the lives of the ordinary people of the town in their day to day business and also in times of joy and sadness, notably during the wake of a woman called Katy Tyrrell. In between documenting Athy on visits home, Minihan continued his career on Fleet Street, which included the iconic snap of the 19-year-old Lady Diana Spencer in the garden of the nursery at which she worked, the morning sun to her back, her legs in silhouette through her skirt. Diana had just been announced as the Prince of Wales's love interest and photographers raced to take her photo, Minihan having the fortune to turn up first. Over the years Minihan developed a close relationship with many writers and his photographs of Samuel Beckett show a particular affinity between the two men. Minihans photos of Beckett are some of his best known, one in particular is described as one of the greatest photos of the twentieth century. William S. Burroughs once referred to Minihan as "a painless photographer". Minihan is perhaps best known for his photographs of Samuel Beckett. Minihan first expressed a desire to photograph Beckett in 1969, following Becketts winning of the Nobel Prize for literature, having noticed that all the available photos of Beckett were of a poor quality; 'We were running a story but discovered there were only two very vague images of Beckett taken many years before. It was like he didn't exist - that was the moment I decided I wanted to meet this man and take his photograph.' Minihan first encountered Beckett in London in 1980, while Beckett was working on a production of one of his own plays, Endgame. Minihan met Beckett in the Hyde Park hotel and showed him some of his photos of Athy to break the ice. The two met on a number of occasions over the next few years, but it was not until 1985 that they met in Paris. They arranged to meet in the restaurant of the Hotel PLM, a regular haunt of Beckett. At ten to five, with the light fading, Minihan took the photo that would go on to be called by some as the photograph of the twentieth century. John Calder credited Minihan with capturing, 'the introspective, infinitely sad gaze of a man looking into the abyss of the world's woes'. Among his numerous photographic publications are Photographs: Samuel Beckett (1995); Shadows from the Pale, Portrait of an Irish Town (1996); and An Unweaving of Rainbows, Images of Irish Writers, 1996. He is currently a freelance photographer specialising in 'the arts'. His book of photographs of Samuel Beckett was published in 1995. His photographs of Athy have been exhibited throughout the world. He was given the freedom of Athy in 1990. Minihan currently lives and works in West Cork. Minihan's many exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world include the Museum of Modern Art, Rio de Janeiro, 1984; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris 1986; the National Portrait Gallery, London 1987/8 and the October Gallery, London 1990 as well as the Guinness Hop Store, Dublin 1991.         President Clinton wishes a Florida Congressman a Happy Birthday on the day Monica Lewinsky's name appeared on the Paula Jones witness list, an event which led directly to his impeachment a year later

Washington, DC, December 5, 1997. 6.75" x 9". "Typed Letter Signed ""Bill Clinton"" as President, 1 page, 6.75"" x 9"". On pale green White House stationery blind embossed at top center with the presidential seal. Washington, December 5, 1997. To Florida Congressman C.W. Bill Young who would be celebrating his 67th birthday on December 16th. President Clinton hand-wrote ""Bill"" above the typed salutation ""Dear Representative Young."" Never folded. Mint condition. In full, ""Happy Birthday! Hillary and I join your family and friends in extending warmest wishes. We hope the coming year brings you good health and much happiness, and that we can continue working together to strengthen our nation and build a brighter future for all Americans.""There were four Articles of Impeachment voted on in the House of Representatives; two passed. Congressman Bill Young voted ""Yes"" on all four.BackgroundOn December 19, 1998, President Bill Clinton was impeached by the House of Representatives. Two articles of impeachment passed the House: (1) The President provided perjurious, false and misleading testimony to the grand jury regarding the Paula Jones case and his relationship with Monica Lewinsky. (2) The President obstructed justice in an effort to delay, impede, cover up and conceal the existence of evidence related to the Jones case. In the actual text of the two Articles, the names Jones and Lewinsky are not mentioned; Paula Jones is identified as a ""subordinate Government employee"" and Monica Lewinsky as a ""witness."" February 6, 1999, was the 16th day of the Senate impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton. Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist recognized ""Mr. Manager Rogan to begin the presentation on the part of the House of Representatives.""California Rep. James E. Rogan, one of the House Managers, questioned Monica Lewinsky, then referred to Paula Jones' sexual harassment case against then Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton and that ""it was while the Paula Jones' case was proceeding in the summer of 1995, that a 22-year-old named Monica Lewinsky went to work as an intern at the White House. Rogan continued, ""… December 5th, 1997. That was the day Monica Lewinsky's name appeared on the Paula Jones witness list. Members of the Senate, this is how the whole thing started. A lone woman in Arkansas felt that she had been wronged by the president of the United States…""Chief Justice Rehnquist then said, ""The Chair recognizes Mr. Manager Hutchinson."" House Manager Arkansas Rep. Asa Hutchinson said, ""Let me continue with the path of obstruction. The obstruction, for our purposes, began on December 5, 1997, when the witness list came out in the civil rights case. It was faxed to the president's lawyers, and it was later given to the president. At that point, the administration of justice became a threat to the president of the United States. He determined that the truth would be harmful to the case that he was trying to defend, and the president made a decision to take whatever steps were necessary to suppress the truth rather than to uphold the law…"" "

Seven Pillars of Wisdom: a triumph, the complete 1922 'Oxford' text, three volume limited and numbered edition of 1997 Set #297

Salisbury, England: Castle Hill Press, 1997. Hardcover. This is a pristine set of the three-volume Castle Hill Press limited edition of the full 1922 "Oxford" text, set #297 of 752 total and 650 copies issued thus. This edition marks the first time that Lawrence's full text was made available to the public since its original circulation to a select few in 1922. Seven Pillars of Wisdom is the story of T.E. Lawrence's (1888-1935) remarkable odyssey as instigator, organizer, hero, and tragic figure of the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War, which he began as an eccentric junior intelligence officer and ended as "Lawrence of Arabia." This time defined Lawrence with indelible experience and celebrity, which he spent the rest of his short life struggling to reconcile and reject, to recount and repress. Lawrence famously resisted publication of his masterwork for the general public during his lifetime. The saga is remarkable. He nearly completed a massive first draft in 1919, only to lose it when his briefcase was mislaid at a train station. This first draft was never recovered. At a fever pitch, Lawrence wrote a new 400,000 word draft in 1920. This punishing burst of writing was followed by an equally brutal process of editing by Lawrence. In 1922, a 335,000 word version was carefully circulated to select friends and literary critics - the famous "Oxford Text". George Bernard Shaw called it "a masterpiece". Nonetheless, Lawrence was unready to see it distributed to the public. In 1926, a further edited 250,000 word "Subscribers' Edition" was produced by Lawrence - but fewer than 200 copies were made, each lavishly and uniquely bound. The process cost Lawrence far more than he made in subscriptions. To recover the loss, Lawrence finally authorized an edition for the general public - but one even further abridged and titled Revolt in the Desert. It was only in the summer of 1935, in the weeks following Lawrence's death, that the text of the Subscribers' Edition was finally published for circulation to the general public. However, that text released to the world as "Complete and Unabridged" in 1935 and which became so famous is, in fact, a significantly abridged version. The fuller 1922 "Oxford Text" - a third longer - would not be published in an edition available to the public until this 1997 edition. Castle Hill Press took this text from the manuscript in the Bodleian Library and T.E. Lawrence's annotated copy of the 1922 Oxford Times printing. Castle Hill first published a three-volume limited edition of 752 sets of this Oxford Text. Of these, 650 sets were issued thus. The production value is excellent and aesthetically appealing. The large volumes measure 11.25 x 9 inches. The two text volumes are printed on acid-free stock and bound in quarter cream cloth and grey paper-covered boards with green leather spine labels, head and foot bands, green top edge stain, and green endpapers. The Volume I rear pastedown features a pocket bearing two folding, color maps. The third volume contains illustrations, featuring 41 full-page Seven Pillars portraits (26 in full color as in the 1926 Subscriber's edition) as well as 127 war photographs, mainly from the collection Lawrence presented to the Imperial War Museum. The Illustrations volume is bound in full cream cloth with illustrated endpapers. All three volumes are issued in uniform dust jackets evocative of the original 1935 British trade edition of the shorter text and housed in a dark red cloth slipcase. This set is as-new - truly fine in fine dust jackets. The volumes appear pristine, the limitation page hand-numbered "297" by the publisher. The dust jackets are crisp and immaculate, now protected beneath removable, archival quality clear covers. The publisher’s slipcase, which typically scuffs and soils easily, is unusually bright and clean, with only trivial blemishes. The set includes the original January 1998 purchase receipt.         Claudio Bravo. Paintings and Drawings. INSCRIBED.

NY: Abbeville Press (1997). 1st ed. - Introductions by Paul Bowles and Mario Vargas Llosa. Interview by Hugo Valcarce. INSCRIBED by the late Bravo to Virginia Spencer Carr (Paul Bowles' authorized biographer) on the second front endpaper: "Para Virginia Spencer | con mucho afecto. Claudio Bravo | Tangier 1997." The book is also INSCRIBED by Bowles to Carr on the full page charcoal portrait of Bowles which reads in part: "Today is the day Virginia | saved my life, pounding me | on my back. Tangier | 8/24/97 | Paul sends love." In addition, Bowles has SIGNED his name under two group photos of Bowles, Bravo, Vargas Llosa, etc. The book came from the library of Carr. This beautiful profusely illustrated book is the definitive monograph on the great Chilean artist, Claudio Bravo, who has lived part of each year in Tangier for decades. Bowles and Bravo were close friends, and Carr was introduced to Bravo by Bowles. Bravo's art, often described as "Super Realistic", has steadily risen in stature and in value over recent years. At a Sotheby's auction of Latin American art held in November of 2002, Bravo's "Ivory Package" sold for a record high for the show of $1,439,000 (which is also the current high for one of his paintings). Bravo rarely appears in public and objects other than his original art signed by him have rarely come on the market. Undoubtedly, this book signed by both Bravo and the late Bowles is unique. A fine book in a fine DJ. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Michael Hartnett.

Ireland. From the library of irish photographer John Minihan. With John's copyright-stamp verso. Signed and titled by John Minihan verso.. Ireland, 1997. Original photograph by John Minihan of irish poet Michael Hartnett on archival paper.
