Ports of Entry: William S. Burroughs and the Arts, Inscribed & Signed Association Copy with: Ephemera; & with: an additional copy.

New York, NY: Thames and Hudson, 1996. First Printing. Softcover; Folded Sheet. Fine. "I am as much surprised as the observer by anything I have created." (from WSB's afterword) A large-format catalog published in conjunction with the exhibit of the same name held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art during July 18- October 6, 1996. A comprehensive survey filled with fine reproductions of collages, photos, paintings, objects & other artworks created by William S. Burroughs over many years; along with collaborative & WSB-inspired works with & by other artists, in particular Brion Gysin, his close friend & a key influence. Indeed, it was after Gysin's death in 1986 that WSB pursued the visual arts in earnest, parallel with his Beat-&-Beyond writings during the final decade of his life. He also wrote extensively on descriptions & ideas about art, as in his afterword here. With preface & commentary by Robert A. Sobieszek, Curator of Photography at LACMA. See Schottlaender, B23(A), pg. 27; Shoaf, Section II, No. 356, pg. 111. We offer a very special copy of this classic, beautiful production: It is warmly inscribed & signed by WSB on the title page: "For Jim and Sue with friendship/ over many years/ Love/ (signed) William S. Burroughs/ November 4, 1996." "Jim" is Jim McCrary, a poet & educator who has long resided in Lawrence, Kansas, where he was a friend & associate of WSB during his later years; a member of Burroughs Communications led by James Grauerholz. "Sue" is artist Sue Ashline, McCrary's wife. Also, Sobieszek has inscribed & signed on the short-title (front endpaper) page: "To Jim & Sue./ with fondest/ love and/ admiration/ and thanks/ (signed) Robert Sobieszek/ All Souls Day (on or about the same date as WSB's inscription)." It is worth noting that in the Acknowledgements, Sobieszek writes: "Thanks are due to the staff and associates of William Burroughs Communications for their untiring labors and unceasing good humor, most especially Jim McCrary for guiding me through the vast materials..." Between pages 50-51 is to be found a folded pamphlet for a symposium that was held at the University of Kansas' Spencer Museum of Art in Lawrence during November 2, 1996, regarding the exhibit (which had recently ended in LA & moved to the Spencer Museum's Kress Gallery during October 26, 1996 through January 5, 1997), featuring Sobieszek, Allen Ginsberg, Kathy Acker, George Condo & Richard Hell. Also, our McCrary acquisitions include a folded card invitation to a reception during the evening of the above-referred symposium, & we have included it here as relevant ephemera. Without question, WSB & McCrary collectively attended all of these events. In addition, we have included an additional, uninscribed first printing of the catalog as a reading copy for the collector. A most significant WSB artifact-bundle, rich with association & provenance- & the hand of WSB himself. Inscribed association copy in fine condition with only mild rubbing & scratching to front, back covers & spine; very minor wear & bumps at edges & corners of same; a few short, faint creases at upper right corner of front cover, surface of same & back cover; slight soiling & spotting at edges of text block esp. lower edge. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps at corners of a few page leaves; a bit of smudging at WSB's signature & date; a tiny spot of same at second letter of Sobieszek signature's last name. Symposium pamphlet in very fine condition with only a short, faint crease across outer & inner lower corners of first two panels; small, light stain at upper right corner of front panel. Invitation card in fine condition, folded in half with attendant horizontal crease through middle; small, faint crease at & near upper right corner of front panel extending to & near upper left corner of rear panel; several much smaller creases near upper left corner of front panel; sparse & very light scratching & spotting of all four outer & inner panels. Second copy of catalog in fine condition with only mild rubbing & scratching to front, back covers & spine; very mild wear & bumps at edges & corners of same; very mild spotting to edges of text block; mild soiling to lower edge of same. Interior very fine with only short wave-creases near upper corners of first 25 or so page leaves; shorter wave-creases across upper corners of last 20 or so of same. Inscribed & Signed to Jim McCrary by William S. Burroughs & exhibit curator Robert A. Sobieszek, virtually contemporary with exhibit & related symposium.

Gary Schneider: "john In Sixteen Parts": Limited-edition Print

New York City, NY: Gary Schneider Studios(1996). First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 1 pages. Rare Gary Schneider collectible art. A pristine Limited-Edition print of one of the most iconic images from his celebrated sequence, "John In Sixteen Parts", titled, numbered, dated, and signed by Gary Schneider. There is no ISBN. The print is now rare. A brilliant production by Gary Schneider: Regular-sized print format. Measures 8 X 10 inches. In the artist's protective plastic sleeve. Eminently suitable for framing. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Gary Schneider's "John In Sixteen Parts, Part #3". The extreme close-up of the model John Erdman's right eye. From the complete sequence of images that show his various body parts (of his face), lovingly, probingly, and "scientifically" photographed by Gary Schneider (Erdman is the artist/photographer's longtime companion). Both the concept and its realization are brilliant, resulting in imagery that is strikingly original, "Conceptual" photography that is imagined rather than conceived, the work of an artist/photographer who has somehow given us a rare glimpse into the human soul, in all its beauty, pain, and "materiality", through photographs of the human body. The complete sequence was published as the eponymous Artist Book in 1997. An absolute "must-have" collectible, not just memorabilia, item/artwork for Gary Schneider collectors. This Limited-Edition print is one of 20 copies, indicated/numbered as such on recto, and it is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully titled, dated, and signed in pencil by the artist/photographer: "John In Sixteen Parts 1996 Part #3 4/20 Gary Schneider". This title is a great photographic print. As far as we know, this is the only copy available online, is in the artist's protective plastic sleeve, and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. Please note: Gary Schneider prints command thousands of dollars from his galleries, at art fairs, and at auction. His work is slowly but surely destined for canonical recognition. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed print thus. 1 original photographic print. One of the most brilliant artist/photographers of our time. A flawless collectible print.
