Wohlmuth, Josef (Hg.)
Conciliorum Oecumenicorum Decreta. Hg. von Giuseppe Alberigo u.a. Band 1: Konzilien des ersten Jahrtausends : vom Konzil von Nizäa (325) bis zum Vierten Konzil von Konstantinopel (869. Aleister Crowley
Crowley, Aleister et al. The Equinox. Samuel Weister, 1998. Hardcover. Good condition. Two volumes. This is a complete facsimile set of the entire volume I of Crowley's seminal occult periodical/review, The Equinox. It features numerous articles, rites, poems, instructions, book reviews, essays and other miscellania by Crowley along with other individuals. These two large, heavy books are in good condition with some minor smudges on the page edges. The hinges of the two volumes in the early halves of these books are not quite split, but do have wide spaces. Apparently these were originally issued with a slipcase, which has long disappeared. There are no major flaws in these books and are still quite nice.

Includes also the very fragile, folded illustration on fine, extra-thin paper. Original Softcover. Excellent condition with only minor signs of external wear. Extremely rare publication of the exiled nobel laureate from China. Gao Xingjian (born January 4, 1940) is a Chinese émigré novelist, playwright, and critic who in 2000 was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature „for an oeuvre of universal validity, bitter insights and linguistic ingenuity." He is also a noted translator (particularly of Samuel Beckett and Eugène Ionesco), screenwriter, stage director, and a celebrated painter. In 1998, Gao was granted French citizenship. Gao's drama is considered to be fundamentally absurdist in nature and avant-garde in his native China. Crawford, Robert; Saltzwedel, Caroline (Artist)
Hamburg: Hirundo Press, 1998. Saltzwedel, Caroline. First and Limited Edition. First edition in book form, number 10 of 25 copies, elephant folio size, [56] pp., signed by Robert Crawford and Caroline Saltzwedel. The first artists' book published by Hirundo Press. The text of "Impossibility" was first published on 18 September 1997 in the "London Review of Books", this is the first illustrated edition published in book form. Caroline Saltzwedel, born in England, has lived in Hamburg since 1995 as a graphic artist and painter. She studied German at the Universities of Durham, Oxford and Bonn, and printed graphics at the Ruskin School of Fine Art, Oxford. In 1998 she founded the Hirundo Press for artists' books in small editions; her works are in numerous public and private collections including the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek, the British Library, the Bodleian Library, Stanford University, and the Widener Library (Harvard) among many others. Robert Crawford is a Scottish poet, scholar and critic, his main focus being in Post-Enlightenment Scottish literature. This poem was written shortly after the birth of his daughter, and deals with "female heroism". It tells the story of the Scottish writer Margaret Oliphant (1828-1897), who wrote over a hundred books during her lifetime, including novels, short stories, biographies and translations, all to feed her large family. The level and output of her work would, by today's standards, be "impossible" - hence the placement of this poem in an undersea, "impossible" world. A marvellous marriage of the Crawford's poems and Saltzwedel's … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gogol, Nikolai; Garnett, Constance (Translator); Magaril, Mikhail (Illustrator)
New York: Summer Garden Editions, 1998. Mikhail Magaril. Limited Edition. Number XXX of 100 copies, large octavo size, 49 pp., signed by Mikhail Magaril. Mikhail Magaril (b. 1950) came to the United States from Russia where he had earned a Master's Degree from the Moscow Graphic Art School; today, he is a highly regarded illustrator, artist, and sculptor with his works in collections such as Yale and Princeton. Magaril "draws extensively on the visual culture of the Soviet avant-garde book illustration, where meaningful arrangements of the image and typography underscore daring linguistic experiments of poets and writers." (N.B., from the artist's web site.) "The Diary of a Madman" is a short story written in first-person diary-entry format by Russian dramatist Nikolai Gogol (1809-1852), whose work lends itself so well to the artistic treatment by Magaril. The story follows the life of a titular counselor during the corrupt and repressive reign of Emperor Nicholas I of Russia; the descent of the protagonist Arksenty Ivanovich Poprishchin coincides with poor treatment by his superiors and the unrecognized love of a woman engaged to another man. Eventually Poprishchin loses touch with reality, believing himself to be the heir to the throne of Spain. The story begs the question: is going mad the sane response to a mad world? The nine illustrations are composed of tortuous lines, with an abstract and almost frantic quality that builds on the world of the narrator. Illustrated, designed, printed, and bound under the direction Mikhail Magaril and published under his own imprint, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Updike, John; Moser, Barry (Artist)
Concord, New Hampshire: William B. Ewert, 1998. Moser, Barry. Limited Edition. One of 15 copies of the deluxe edition (total edition 150), octavo size, [27] pp., signed by John Updike and Barry Moser, with separate signed print (AP). John Updike (1932-2009) is one of only three authors (to date) to receive the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction more than once (the others being William Faulkner and Booth Tarkington). He is perhaps best known for his series of books focusing on the character Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom, which deal with the emptiness and futility found in middle-class life in America. "The Women Who Got Away" is a short story, first published in "The New Yorker" in 1995, and tells of the relationships between people in a small suburban community; the characters must deal with the effects of sex and adultery in their personal lives. The story is preceded by a wood engraving by Barry Moser (b. 1940), owner of Pennyroyal Press, who has illustrated many books such as Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking-Glass". His engraving here offers a delicate beauty, a sensuality to accompany Updike's text; in addition to the engraving printed in the book, this deluxe edition contains a separate signed print by Moser, an artist's proof of the print found in the book. ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter aubergine leather with lilac paper boards, gilt lettering on the front board, fore-edge uncut, title page in red and black, black-and-white wood engraving by Barry Moser preceding the text; Zerkall Book paper, octavo size (9.5" by 6.25"), [27] unnumbered pages, o … [Click Below for Full Description]

Neruda, Pablo; Felstiner, John (Translator); Ranney, Edward (Artist)
[New York]: The Limited Editions Club (1998), 1998. Ranney, Edward. Limited Edition. 4to - over 9" - 12" tall. 30 p. Signed by Artist. Limited edition of 300 copies, this no. 56, SIGNED BY THE ARTIST ON THE COLOPHON PAGE, with monthly newsletter loosely laid in. Chilean poet Pablo Neruda (born Ricardo Eliecer Neftali Reyes y Bosoalto, 1904-1973) became known as a poet at the young age of 10 years and began publishing his verse at 15; Gabriel Garcia Marquez once called Neruda "the greatest poet of the 20th century in any language", and he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971. This volume is a portion of the Canto General (General Song) which consists of more than 15,000 lines, being a telling of the entire American Western Hemisphere from an Hispanic American perspective; it is a beautiful poem of praise to the continent as it flourished before the arrival of the Spanish. Wonderfully brought to life by the photogravures of the work of Edward Ranney (b. 1942), who has been internationally recognized for his images of Inca and Mayan landscapes and architecture; Scientific American commented that Ranney did "more than any other photographer to show the works of the Incas as they are set into numinous mountain landscapes that somehow called forth those superb forms into stone" (N.B., above info from Wiki and the monthly newsletter). ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in rough green linen over boards, black leather spine label with gilt lettering, text presented in both Spanish and English in two columns, the ten photogravures bound in throughout the text; type Monotype Centaur … [Click Below for Full Description]
