A Supposedly Fun Thing I’ll Never Do Again: Essays and Arguments

Boston: Little Brown, 1997. First edition. Octavo, original half cloth. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Signed by David Foster Wallace on the title page. "These vivid, hilarious essays attracted much attention when they were originally published, but they also made Mr. Wallace vulnerable to accusations, as a friend of mine put it, of ''sneering at ordinary people.'' Rereading them lays such reservations to rest. The primary butt of Mr. Wallace's humor is himself, and if he seizes upon his experiences to reveal ugly aspects of the American character, he always does it through the lens of his own worst impulses" (The New York Times).

        Auschwitz

El Cerrito, California:: Red Parrot Press,, 1997.. Edition of 25. 8.5 x 13.5?. Accordion structure. Text and images in linocut. Bound in black covered boards. Barbara Milman: "In 1994 I decided to interview Holocaust survivors and create a series of prints based on their stories. I then approached the San Francisco Holocaust Oral History Project, which graciously put me in touch with several survivors. Two of these individuals, Rita Kuhn (Berlin) and Gloria Lyon (Auschwitz), were the first of my interviewees. Subsequently, other subjects were suggested by friends and acquaintances, and I interviewed three more individuals: Peter Schrag (Escape), Alexander Groth (Warsaw), and Hielke Sheneman (Holland).... "It is my hope that telling these stories today, one-half a century after they happened, will make it less likely that similar stories will have to be told in the future." Interview of Gloria Lyon: A Hungarian child survives the largest death camp. Barbara Milman: "Upon arrival at Auschwitz, Jews were divided into two groups. The elderly and infirm were sent directly to the gas chambers. The young and healthy were sent to the forced labor section of the camp." Gloria Lyon: "We were in Auschwitz. Heads shaved, arms tattooed, we were sent to barracks. Next morning my mother, my sister and I were set to work sorting and packing clothing, shoes, glasses for shipment to Germany. Night and day thick black smoke filled the camp with an awful stench. After a few days I completely lost all my sense of smell."

LITTLE, BIG: THE HARDCOVER SPECIAL EDITION - Rare Fine Copy of The Easton Press Collector's Edition: Signed by John Crowley - ONLY SIGNED COPY OF EASTON PRESS EDITION ONLINE

Norwalk, CT: Easton Press, 1997 - 1st Printing. Signed. 538 pages. Published in 1997. Rare John Crowley and "Little, Big" collectible item. A fine copy of the Easton Press Collector's Edition, signed by John Crowley. He did NOT sign most copies of the edition. The author's fantasy novel. One of the greatest novels of the 20th century. The Easton Press Collector's Edition. Published in a small and limited one-time-only print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. There is no ISBN. The Collector's Edition is now rare. Its production values are exemplary in every respect: Regular-sized volume format. Black leather boards with gilt design on the cover and gilt titles on the spine, as issued. Text by John Crowley. Exquisite frontispiece by the legendary artist/illustrator Alan Clark. Raised bands. Green satin ribbon marker. Gilt page edges. Smyth-sewn with concealed muslin joints. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. The "acid-free" paper was milled especially for this edition only, meets the standards of the Council of Library Resources, and appropriately enough, will last 1000 years. Without DJ, as issued. Presents, in its Collector's Edition format, John Crowley's "Little, Big". The grand 20th-century response to Lewis Carroll's 19th-century masterpiece, "Alice's Adventures In Wonderland". Perhaps the greatest modern fantasy novel. With just two words and a comma, the simple title encapsulates the novel's cosmic vision. "Little" is our finite world. "Big" is another, infinitely expanding universe. Within our world, there is another; within that, yet another; and another, AD INFINITUM. At the center, accessible only after several epochs, is the Faerie Realm. Unlike our Hollywood special-effects fantasies, which present the universe rather literally as "outer space", "Little, Big" looks deeply within, and envisions the universe as infinite "inner space". Rather than an image-world, a profound, metaphysical vision is awe-inspiringly evoked whereas "Star Wars" (and all of our other fantasies of life elsewhere) are, in the end, merely projections, however spectacular, of our finite world. "A book that, all by itself, calls for a re-definition of fantasy" (Ursula K. Le Guin). "A neglected masterpiece. The closest achievement we have to the Alice stories of Lewis Carroll" (Harold Bloom). "The best fantasy novel ever. Period" (Thomas Disch). An absolute "must-have" title for John Crowley collectors. This is a copy of the Easton Press Collector's Edition, and it is very prominently and beautifully signed in black fountain pen on the title page by John Crowley. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a great book. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the Easton Press First Edition Thus/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Crowley did NOT sign most copies of the Collector's Edition. There are NO copies of the Bantam First Edition online whereas copies of the 1981 First British Edition command up to $1500 (rightly so). This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. One of the greatest novelists of our time. A fine collectible copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Das Mittelalterliche Hausbuch. The Medieval Housebook. Faksimile und Kommentarband. Mit Beiträgen von Gudolf Keil, Eberhard König, Rainer Leng, Karl-Heinz Ludwig und Christoph Grof zu Waldburg Wolfegg.

München, Leipzig, Prestel 1997. - Fol., 62 Blatt, 235 S., 110 Abb., Orig. Jahrhunderts an.

Introduction ? l'ost?opathie cr?nio-sacr?e appliqu?e au cheval Pascal Evrard, Susanne E. Kaiser, Muriel Vaessen, Andrea Hadrovic, Andrea Janssen, Britta Mattern

Oliver ?diteur (Suisse) Corrigo Sc, 1997. 2930019069 Introduction ? l'ost?opathie cr?nio-sacr?e appliqu?e au cheval Pascal Evrard, Susanne E. He is bullied by them and his fat, spoilt cousin Dudley, and lives a very unremarkable life with only the odd hiccup (like his hair growing back overnight!) to cause him much to think about. That is until an owl turns up with a letter addressed to Harry and all hell breaks loose! He is literally rescued by a world where nothing is as it seems and magic lessons are the order of the day. Read and find out how Harry discovers his true heritage at Hogwarts School of Wizardry and Witchcraft, the reason behind his parents mysterious death, who is out to kill him, and how he uncovers the most amazing secret of all time, the fabled Philosopher's Stone! All this and muggles too. Now, what are they? This is Jo's first book and she has already written seven outlines for Harry's further adventures at Hogwarts.

        BLINDNESS

New York City, NY: Harcourt Brace, 1997. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. New York City, NY: Harcourt Brace, 1997. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 294 pages. The author's sixth novel to be translated into English. One of the greatest novels of the 20th century. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Jose Saramago's "Ensaio sobre a Cegueira" in a felicitous English translation. His anti-totalitarian allegory/novel. It is the very last translation by Giovanni Pontiero, to whom the book is dedicated (together with Saramago's wife Pilar and daughter Violante). Saramago considered himself very lucky (rightly so) to have had two masterly English translators (Pontiero was succeeded by Margaret Jull Costa). By the most cruelly ironic twist of fate, Pontiero was already gravely ill when he was working on "Blindness". "He was translating 'Blindness', which he finished. Then he died. Toward the end, he himself started to go blind as a result of medication his doctors gave him. He had to choose between taking the medication, which would sustain him for a bit longer, and not taking it, which would create other risks. He chose, shall we say, to preserve his vision, and he was translating a novel about blindness. It was a devastating situation" (Jose Saramago). Saramago was an anomaly who came out of nowhere, seemingly born a genius. Every single page of every single book he has ever written makes the reader feel that he or she is in the hands of an unsurpassable Master. "He got ahead of us; he is ahead of us. His work belongs to our future" (Ursula K. LeGuin). The basis of the fine (and underrated) film adaptation by Fernando Meirelles, with Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo. An absolute "must-have" title for Jose Saramago collectors. <b><i> This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed and dated in black pen on the title page by the author: "Jose Saramago 24.4.2002". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page or bookplate. This title is a great book. This is one of very few such signed and dated copies of the First American Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws ("Near Fine") yet are priced as though they had collectible value. Among the Nobel Laureates and other great writers of our time, Saramago's signature was probably the most difficult to get because he rarely left Lanzarote, the island he moved to at the height of his fame. Now that he is dead, he isn't signing any more copies. And yet, signed copies of his books, while not exactly cheap, remain under-priced as compared to those of say, Gabriel Garcia Marquez or Cormac McCarthy. While they are great writers, Saramago will be regarded by posterity as a greater writer than both of them, and there is no British or American novelist of the last fifty years, living or dead, who comes close to Saramago's achievement (except, according to Harold Bloom, for Philip Roth at his best). A rare signed copy thus. </B></i> Regarded by Harold Bloom as one of the two greatest novelists of our time (the other being Philip Roth), Jose Saramago will be read as probably the greatest European novelist of the last fifty years. Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1998. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JOSE SARAMAGO TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0151002517.

Seven Pillars of Wisdom: a triumph, the complete 1922 'Oxford' text, three volume limited and numbered edition of 1997 Set #169

Salisbury, England: Castle Hill Press, 1997. Hand-numbered limited edition. Hardcover. This is an as-new set of the three-volume Castle Hill Press limited edition of the full 1922 "Oxford" text, set #169 of 752 total and 650 copies issued thus. This edition marks the first time that Lawrence's full text was made available to the public since its original circulation to a select few in 1922. Seven Pillars of Wisdom is the story of T.E. Lawrence's (1888-1935) remarkable odyssey as instigator, organizer, hero, and tragic figure of the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War, which he began as an eccentric junior intelligence officer and ended as "Lawrence of Arabia." This time defined Lawrence with indelible experience and celebrity, which he spent the rest of his short life struggling to reconcile and reject, to recount and repress. Lawrence famously resisted publication of his masterwork for the general public during his lifetime. The saga is remarkable. He nearly completed a massive first draft in 1919, only to lose it when his briefcase was mislaid at a train station. This first draft was never recovered. At a fever pitch, Lawrence wrote a new 400,000 word draft in 1920. This punishing burst of writing was followed by an equally brutal process of editing by Lawrence. In 1922, a 335,000 word version was carefully circulated to select friends and literary critics - the famous "Oxford Text". George Bernard Shaw called it "a masterpiece". Nonetheless, Lawrence was unready to see it distributed to the public. In 1926, a further edited 250,000 word "Subscribers' Edition" was produced by Lawrence - but fewer than 200 copies were made, each lavishly and uniquely bound. The process cost Lawrence far more than he made in subscriptions. To recover the loss, Lawrence finally authorized an edition for the general public - but one even further abridged and titled Revolt in the Desert. It was only in the summer of 1935, in the weeks following Lawrence's death, that the text of the Subscribers' Edition was finally published for circulation to the general public. However, that text released to the world as "Complete and Unabridged" in 1935 and which became so famous is, in fact, a significantly abridged version. The fuller 1922 "Oxford Text" - a third longer - would not be published in an edition available to the public until this 1997 edition. Castle Hill Press took this text from the manuscript in the Bodleian Library and T.E. Lawrence's annotated copy of the 1922 Oxford Times printing. Castle Hill first published a three-volume limited edition of 752 sets of this Oxford Text. Of these, 650 sets were issued thus. The production value is excellent and aesthetically appealing. The large volumes measure 11.25 x 9 inches. The two text volumes are printed on acid-free stock and bound in quarter cream cloth and grey paper-covered boards with green leather spine labels, head and foot bands, green top edge stain, and green endpapers. The Volume I rear pastedown features a pocket bearing two folding, color maps. The third volume contains illustrations, featuring 41 full-page Seven Pillars portraits (26 in full color as in the 1926 Subscriber's edition) as well as 127 war photographs, mainly from the collection Lawrence presented to the Imperial War Museum. The Illustrations volume is bound in full cream cloth with illustrated endpapers. All three volumes are issued in uniform dust jackets evocative of the original 1935 British trade edition of the shorter text and housed in a dark red cloth slipcase. This set is as-new - truly fine in fine dust jackets. The volumes appear pristine, the limitation page hand-numbered "169" by the publisher. The dust jackets are crisp and immaculate, now protected beneath removable, archival quality clear covers. The publisher?s slipcase, which typically scuffs and soils easily, shows virtually no wear. This set includes the original publisher?s prospectus laid in, as well as an original order form. Bibliographic reference: O'Brien A034a.

BIBBIA di Borso d'Este: ms Lat 422 - 423, Biblioteca Estense e universitaria, (Facsimile). Modena, Franco Cosimo Panini, (1997)

Jahrhunderts an.
