Seven Pillars of Wisdom: a triumph, the complete 1922 'Oxford' text, three volume limited and numbered edition of 1997 Set #169

Salisbury, England: Castle Hill Press, 1997. Hand-numbered limited edition. Hardcover. This is an as-new set of the three-volume Castle Hill Press limited edition of the full 1922 "Oxford" text, set #169 of 752 total and 650 copies issued thus. This edition marks the first time that Lawrence's full text was made available to the public since its original circulation to a select few in 1922. Seven Pillars of Wisdom is the story of T.E. Lawrence's (1888-1935) remarkable odyssey as instigator, organizer, hero, and tragic figure of the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War, which he began as an eccentric junior intelligence officer and ended as "Lawrence of Arabia." This time defined Lawrence with indelible experience and celebrity, which he spent the rest of his short life struggling to reconcile and reject, to recount and repress. Lawrence famously resisted publication of his masterwork for the general public during his lifetime. The saga is remarkable. He nearly completed a massive first draft in 1919, only to lose it when his briefcase was mislaid at a train station. This first draft was never recovered. At a fever pitch, Lawrence wrote a new 400,000 word draft in 1920. This punishing burst of writing was followed by an equally brutal process of editing by Lawrence. In 1922, a 335,000 word version was carefully circulated to select friends and literary critics - the famous "Oxford Text". George Bernard Shaw called it "a masterpiece". Nonetheless, Lawrence was unready to see it distributed to the public. In 1926, a further edited 250,000 word "Subscribers' Edition" was produced by Lawrence - but fewer than 200 copies were made, each lavishly and uniquely bound. The process cost Lawrence far more than he made in subscriptions. To recover the loss, Lawrence finally authorized an edition for the general public - but one even further abridged and titled Revolt in the Desert. It was only in the summer of 1935, in the weeks following Lawrence's death, that the text of the Subscribers' Edition was finally published for circulation to the general public. However, that text released to the world as "Complete and Unabridged" in 1935 and which became so famous is, in fact, a significantly abridged version. The fuller 1922 "Oxford Text" - a third longer - would not be published in an edition available to the public until this 1997 edition. Castle Hill Press took this text from the manuscript in the Bodleian Library and T.E. Lawrence's annotated copy of the 1922 Oxford Times printing. Castle Hill first published a three-volume limited edition of 752 sets of this Oxford Text. Of these, 650 sets were issued thus. The production value is excellent and aesthetically appealing. The large volumes measure 11.25 x 9 inches. The two text volumes are printed on acid-free stock and bound in quarter cream cloth and grey paper-covered boards with green leather spine labels, head and foot bands, green top edge stain, and green endpapers. The Volume I rear pastedown features a pocket bearing two folding, color maps. The third volume contains illustrations, featuring 41 full-page Seven Pillars portraits (26 in full color as in the 1926 Subscriber's edition) as well as 127 war photographs, mainly from the collection Lawrence presented to the Imperial War Museum. The Illustrations volume is bound in full cream cloth with illustrated endpapers. All three volumes are issued in uniform dust jackets evocative of the original 1935 British trade edition of the shorter text and housed in a dark red cloth slipcase. This set is as-new - truly fine in fine dust jackets. The volumes appear pristine, the limitation page hand-numbered "169" by the publisher. The dust jackets are crisp and immaculate, now protected beneath removable, archival quality clear covers. The publisher?s slipcase, which typically scuffs and soils easily, shows virtually no wear. This set includes the original publisher?s prospectus laid in, as well as an original order form. Bibliographic reference: O'Brien A034a.

BIBBIA di Borso d'Este: ms Lat 422 - 423, Biblioteca Estense e universitaria, (Facsimile). Modena, Franco Cosimo Panini, (1997)

Jahrhunderts an. Strike Up the Band. In Three Volumes

Milwaukee, WI, 1997. One of 10 copies only, each signed and numbered by the artist. Vol. I, 54pp; Vol. II, 54pp; Vol. III, 56pp. Page size: 3-5/8 x 1 inch. Each page is hand-written by the artist on the verso and the recto has an original cigar band mounted to the page. The text is a mix of aphorisms, history, and lore of tobacco and smoking, with quotes by famous authors, etc. The Introduction tells us that the cigar band was invented by Catherine the Great of Russia, when she tied a bit of silk ribbon around her stogie to avoid staining her fingers! A witty production with the actual cigar labels quite attractive.

Jumbo Sarony Photograph - SIGNED IN NEW YORK, 1882

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Original portrait photograph by Napoleon Sarony, large format albumen cabinet card, SIGNED BY WILDE ("Oscar Wilde June '82 New York"), quarter length, turned to the left and half looking back towards but not at the camera, wearing his astrakhan coat. 7 1⁄4" x 12 3⁄4", archivally matted and set in a fine hand-carved original Aesthetic Movement frame under UV plexi. The image has had some cleaning and restoration work to the surface, the edges and the bottom corners. There is a surface crack through the "e" of June and light damage to the surface just above the "c" in Oscar. Wilde is very scarce in signed photographs, and ones of this size are particularly rare. Reference: Merlin Holland, The Wilde Album, 1997 (number 22 in Holland's sequence); Richard Ellman, Oscar Wilde, 1987.
Among the best known images of Wilde, it is one of the twenty-seven images of him which Sarony took at the beginning of the former's tour of America in 1882. Sarony was the pre-eminent New York photographer of his day and one of the city's favourite eccentrics.
Wilde, who was eager to make an international reputation, first came to America on a lecture tour arranged by the English impresario, Richard d'Oyly Carte (of Gilbert and Sullivan fame), arriving on the SS Arizona on January 3rd, 1882, this being the date of his famous quip to the NY Customs House officer that he had "nothing to declare except my genius." On a grueling schedule, Wilde lectured to Americans on aestheticism in a new town every few days and though the tour was originally planned to last four months, it was continued for over a year. In preparation for this tour, he bought himself some suitably aesthetic outfits, including a long, heavy, fur-lined green overcoat (shown in this photograph). He became very attached to this coat, writing later that "it was all over America with me ... it knows me perfectly," and he wore it when he set sail for New York on Christmas Eve, 1881, without a word of his lectures written.

A Supposedly Fun Thing I’ll Never Do Again: Essays and Arguments.

Boston: Little Brown, 1997. First edition. Octavo, original half cloth. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Signed by David Foster Wallace on the title page. "These vivid, hilarious essays attracted much attention when they were originally published, but they also made Mr. Wallace vulnerable to accusations, as a friend of mine put it, of ''sneering at ordinary people.'' Rereading them lays such reservations to rest. The primary butt of Mr. Wallace's humor is himself, and if he seizes upon his experiences to reveal ugly aspects of the American character, he always does it through the lens of his own worst impulses" (The New York Times).

Fancy on a Bach Air for solo cello. Autograph musical manuscript signed. Undated, but 1966. The complete work

Commissioned by Judy and Robert Goldberg and first performed by Yo-Yo Ma at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston on August 24, 1997. "My 'Goldberg Variation,' Fancy on a Bach Air, is for unaccompanied cello. It transforms the gentle arches of Bach's theme into slowly soaring arpeggi of almost unending phrase-lengths. Its dual inspiration was the love of two extraordinary people and the solo cello suites of a great composer - both of them strong, long-lined, passionate, eternal, and for me, definitive of all that is beautiful lin life." johncorigliano.com. 1 page. Oblong folio, 280 x 420 mm. Notated in pencil on light green 16-stave printed Aztec XX-16 music paper, with music encompassing both bass and soprano clefs, mostly unbarred. Signed at upper right, with autograph titling, "Fancy on a Bach Aria," at head, and tempo ("Largo") and metronome marking (". = ca. 48-56") at upper left. With ("ca 5:30") at conclusion, indicating that the piece is approximately 5 minutes and 30 seconds in length.

        Guardian of Sterile Waters.

Brooklyn, New York:: Miriam Schaer,, [1997].. One-of-a-Kind. 12 x 20 x 6" sculptural bookwork. Materials: ladies' girdle, acrylic, ink, silk, sterile-water ampules, plastic toy laser print, ribbon. Miriam Schaer: "Guardian of Sterile Water is the third and last of the three books I made to explore my infertility and issues around motherhood. Guardian was created after the treatments failed, using as art materials some of the leftover fertility drugs - specifically the ampules of sterilized water that was to be used in mixing Clomid and Perganol - infertility drugs that were commonly used in the late 90s. "Inside the bustier, there is a heart-shaped inset box, or cartouche, which holds a heart shaped book. The book's pages are collages of actual medical records complimented by images of infants. "The bottom of the heart is lined with broken bottles from the ampules of the sterilized water. All three deal with the urge to have a child - that is, to become a mother - and the coming to terms with its unlikelihood in my own life. "My work in this vein is chiefly a way of asking questions that explore feminine, feminist, and social issues that I sometimes think have no answers. So I try to make sense of things by making art."
