        Georgian Repousse Icons

Khelovneba, 1997. Hardcover. Very Good +. Khelovneba, 1997. Hardcover. Very Good +. Text is in English, Georgian and at least one other language I don't recognize. 82 full-page color glossy plates. Minimal edgewear; otherwise excellent condition. Profusely illustrated with glossy color prints. Extremely scarce: appears to be the only copy available anywhere online! Christianity was first introduced into Georgia by Andrew, Simon Cananaean and Matthew in the 1st century. But during the three centuries the expansion of Christianity in the country was prevented by the Pagan religion. And in the 4th century after the entry of St. Nino Georgia was converted to Christianity. Icons were the most available and populr aids in spreading and establishing the Christian religion. But they do not only belong to the church and its history. They also form one of the substantial components of medieval art. And as there is no history of medieval architecture without the Christian churches and other buildings of religious purpose, there can be no full picture of painting and sculpture without the icons of that period. Georgian masters, painters of icons and goldsmiths created numerous highly artistic works and made a valuable contribution in development of Christian culture. The present edition is wholly dedicated to Georgian Icons. This is more or less a full collection of embossed specimens by Georgian masters. Study of the repousse icons preserved in Georgia is very important for the history of medieval art not of Georgia alone, but also of other Christian countries. Repousse icons enable one to recreate an unbroken continuous history of the Georgian repousse art from the 8th and 9th centuries up to the 19th century including. [B14]

» SUPERBE ENSEMBLE.         Gartten-Parterres. Augsburg, Jeremias Wolff, [1690/1703]. With a title-print followed by 12 garden plans, numbered 1-13. With: (2) SAENGER, Johann J. Vorstellung einiger modernen Gebäude zum Pracht, zum Zierde und zur Bequemlichkeit eingerichtet.Neurenberg, Johann Christoph Weigel, [ca. 1700/1725]. With a title-print followed by 15 elevations and plans of contemporary stately residences, all but the title-print lettered a-i, k-p. (3) CHEREAU, Jacques. [Elevations and plans of pipe organs in 3 Paris churches and of pipe organs by Feillet].Paris, Jacques Chereau, [ca. 1700/50]. With 16 finely engraved elevations and plans of pipe organs, numbered 1-16. 3 works in 1 volume. Oblong small 1mo (ad 1) & large folio (ad 2-3). Early 19th-century half red roan (sheepskin).

Ad 1: Berlin Kat. 3321; WorldCat (4 copies); not in BAL; ad 2: Berlin Kat. 1997; WorldCat (9 copies incl. 1 incomplete); not in BAL; Bauer, Christoph Weigel; ad 3: Cat'zArts (www.beauxartsparis.fr/ow2/catzarts) (individual prints); not in BAL; Berlin Kat.; WorldCat; for Jacques Chereau: Thieme & Becker VI, pp. 461-462. Fine collection of 3 rare series of architectural prints, the third series (showing elevations and plans of existing and newly designed pipe organs) is especially rare. The first series, with 12 large plans of classical gardens, is dedicated to the Holy Roman Emperor and King of Hungary, Joseph I in Vienna. Its title-print includes a beautiful bird's eye view of a palace and its gardens. The title describes the designer of the garden plans, Georg Hätzl, as Royal art and pleasure gardener at Schönbrünn, near Vienna. The title-plate was engraved by Jakob Müller (ca. 1670-1703) in Augsburg. The palace does not appear to be either Schönbrunn or Hofburg. The second print series shows a splendid arch with columns and sculpture, bearing the title on a large rectangular panel and the imprint on a scrollwork cartouche. It is followed by 15 beautiful elevations and plans of Royal summer houses and gardens, Princely country houses and gardens, large garden halls, etc., and includes a splendid Royal building that could be used as a Town Hall or Court House as well. The extremely rare third print series shows 16 elevations and plans of pipe organs in their architectural context. It was sold and presumably engraved by the copperplate engraver Jacques Chereau (1688-1776) in Paris. The name "Chereau" appears with the address ("Paris ... ruë St. Jacques au Grand St. Remy") on plates 2 and 11, and other engravings with the same address identify him as Jacques. Each print has a title engraved on the plate, but there is no general title. The series includes a plan and two elevations of the large and richly decorated organ of the Abbaye de St. Victor, a plan and two elevations of the organ of the Church of St. Geneviève, and a plan and two elevations of the richly decorated organ of the Abbaye de Saint Germain-des-Prés, all at Paris, and 7 plans and elevations of pipe organs drawn by a certain "Feillet", whom we have not identified. With a bookplate on the front paste-down indicating that the book came from the library of the late Isaac La Lau and was given by his son to the society "Mathesis Scientiarum Genitrix" in Leiden, and with the society's label on the front board. In very good condition and with generous margins, with only an occasional minor stain or fold. Binding slightly rubbed. The prints in the second series are bound out of order.

A Collection of over 350 Menus.

Mostly Germany and France, c. 1883-1997. Various sizes; illustrated and printed in different techniques, one etched on sheet metal (1957), one printed on a textile ribbon; a few with traces of use; generally very good. The vast majority of the items in this impressive collection date from about 1895 to 1965. The menus were produced for a variety of private and diplomatic occasions, and also for public restaurants. Six menues are for on-board dinners and lunches on ships of the Campagnie Générale Transatlantique (1950), French Channel ferries, a Portuguese Transatlantic steamer (1943), one for the 4th of July dinner on the steamer Cincinnati in 1913 and one menu for a dinner on an Italian steamer in 1939, with 'impressive' Fascist design. On the diplomatic and political side there are a few menues for Swedish Royal meals, a gala dinner given by the Genschers (Helmut Genscher, Western German Foreign Minister) for the Dayans (Moshe Dayan, Israeli military leader and politician) in 1975, one by the Western German Federal President Scheel and his wife for Jimmy Carter and wife (with the mis-spelling of marinaded), one dinner given in honour of the Foreign Minister of Qatar in Bonn, one for the Saudi Crown Prince in 1978, and a few more German diplomatic occasions. Two menus from the 1880s are rather interesting: printed in French Indo-China, in Haiphong (Vietnam), to honour a high-ranking French military official. Among the culinary highlights must be ranking the celebration of a race horse named Moët & Chandon in 1970 with a 1911 vintage and the dinner of the Comité National des Appellations Controlées given in Margaux in 1946. The collection provides a fascinating insight into what Europe, especially Germany, was eating through a period that included seismic economic and historic changes.

Produced in an edition of 225 copies, this number 206. The Old Stile Press invited Paul Delrue to bind ten copies in his style, known as Lacunose; this is no. IX of those X specially bound copies (with another six copies subsequently bound by Paul for his own use). Per Paul, each of the ten copies bound for the Old Stile Press were a little different, while the design was very much in keeping with the text. Paul Delrue (b. 1944) bound his first book at the age of 15 in 1959, and knew he had discovered his calling. He became an apprentice at the University College, London from 1961-64 and worked there as a binder until 1971. He set up his own bindery in 1971 and in 1981 was elected a Fellow of the Society of Bookbinders, having founded and served as chairman of the Chester and North Wales branch in 1979. Paul has earned numerous awards and honours, including the Silver medal and three other awards in 1991 in The Bookbinding Competition. He was elected a Fellow of Designer Bookbinders in the same year; the following year he was awarded two Bronze medals in the prestigious Prix Paul Bonet. Paul invented the lacunose style of binding which is masterfully shown in this work, although he uses other methods as well. His work is highly prized and springs from within him; as he writes on his web site, "A book and its binding are inextricably linked - the one complements the other in a way which creates something more than just a book with an attractive cover. My design bindings draw on what a book says to me and how it inspires me emotionally". ***DESCRIPTION: Bound in the lacunose style (which involves layering pieces of leather, sanding them down to reveal the layers underneath, then pressing the panel which imparts a sheen to the leather; when pressed, the surface is very smooth to the touch, with interesting pits and furrows below the surface [N.B., from Paul Delrue]) with leathers used in colours of different blues, grey, greens, brown and tan; with swirls of lighter colour reminiscent of water pooling, and white featherstrokes. The volume was printed french-fold, with the lovely linocuts by J. Martin Pitts on each page in colours of brown, blue and white; most full-page (or nearly so), some spilling onto two pages, they lovingly echo the ethereal text of Roden Noel (1834-1894). Volume signed by both J. Martin Pitts and by Paul Delrue; folio size (approximately 12.5" tall), unpaginated. In a case also designed by Paul Delrue. ***CONDITION: Fine, in a fine slipcase. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         William S. Burroughs Signed Bullet Hole T-Shirt (Limited Edition)

Exotica Press, 1997. First Edition. Very Good. Signed by Author. Limited edition T-Shirt both shot and signed by William S. Burroughs. This shirt is one of three designs from Lawrence, Kansas design and marketing house, Exotica. The image is of the author, done in a 90s psychedelic style. Burroughs also provided the mysterious quote “Will he have 3-D in time?” that features on the shirt. The bullet holes on this particular shirt (shot by Burroughs) are small, adding a slight distressing effect. And Burroughs has signed it just below the graphic. From a 1997 article in Wired Magazine, titled Shootin’ the Shirt with William: “Lawrence, Kansas-based design and marketing house Exotica recently struck a deal with friend and neighbor William S. Burroughs, everyone's favorite postmodern junkie. Burroughs not only offers his visage and a quote for three T-shirt styles, he personally takes the shirts to the range, puts bullets through 'em, then autographs the smoldering cotton with a felt-tip pen.” Depending on the day, Burroughs would vary the way he signed the shirts. We have been told by the original owner of the shirt (who received it directly from Exotica) that in this case, the shirt was shot with a shotgun. Exotica also informed him that Burroughs then dipped a .38 slug in laundry ink and signed the shirt. Suitable for framing. Made by Exotica and William S. Burroughs CONDITION: Distressed. Shirt itself is in Very Good Condition, although there is some faint staining in a couple places on the shoulder and sleeves. Not immediately apparent. Shirt has three small bullet holes. SIZE: Extra Large. MEASUREMENTS: Shoulder to Shoulder: 22 1/2 inches. Chest: 48 inches. Length: 30 1/2 inches

Zirkuspädagogik : Grundsätze - Beispiele - Anregungen eine Dokumentation anläßlich des Internationalen Kinder-Jugend-Circus- & -Theaterfestivals in Hamburg 1997

Zustand: nahezu neuwertig. Match In A Bottle (With prospectus, origional order form, and selected additional leaves)

North Andover, Massachusetts: Kat Ran Press, 1997. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Gohde, Kurt. 4to - over 9" - 12" tall. 39 p. Signed by Author and Artist. The first book published by the Kat Ran Press, an impressive debut volume and somewhat scarce in the marketplace today. The illustrations were created by Kurt Gohde by means of using fire as a drawing medium - the natural pairing for this book of poetry dedicated to fire and its flames. Mr. Gohde uses highly imaginative techniques to create the path of smoke, using "techniques as varied as simply scaring the page with a single match", "to lighting lines of gun powder that had been carefully laid down on the page". Note that each of the eight images in the book "were each recreated over one hundred times. These are not prints, photographs, or offset reproductions. THEY ARE ORIGINAL DRAWINGS". (N.B., above quotes from the book's prospectus.) Our volume is no. 34 of 50 copies (there were another 15 copies NFS), with the 12-page prospectus and original order form loosely laid in; it also includes three additional selected signatures, including the title page and two illustrations. ***DESCRIPTION: Bound in red cloth specially imported from Japan, stamped with 22-karat gold foil displaying the title on the front, fore-edge uncut, title page in red and black, printed on Arches mould-made paper imported from Epinal, France, printed directly from metal types cast by Michael and Winifred Bixler, quarto size (approximately 11" tall), unpaginated with 24 leaves (including blanks), SIGNED by both Knapp and Gohde on the colophon page. Housed in a clam-shell box covered with the same red cloth as the book, title stamped in gold on the spine. ***CONDITION: Fine, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, perfectly straight corners with no rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings; the prospectus, order form, and additional signatures are also all in fine condition. We are grading the clam-shell box as near fine, held at a certain angle there seems to be a shadow on a portion of the back cloth, which may be a natural variation in the weave. ***CITATION: Kat Ran Checklist A1. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
