The Waternymph and the Boy [DESIGN BINDING - Paul Delrue]

[Monmouthshire]: [The Old Stile Press, 1997], 1997. Limited Edition. Leather. Fine. Pitts, J. Martin. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall Signed by Artist and Bookmakers. Produced in an edition of 225 copies, this number 206. The Old Stile Press invited Paul Delrue to bind ten copies in his style, known as Lacunose; this is no. IX of those X specially bound copies (with another six copies subsequently bound by Paul for his own use). Per Paul, each of the ten copies bound for the Old Stile Press were a little different, while the design was very much in keeping with the text. Paul Delrue (b. 1944) bound his first book at the age of 15 in 1959, and knew he had discovered his calling. He became an apprentice at the University College, London from 1961-64 and worked there as a binder until 1971. He set up his own bindery in 1971 and in 1981 was elected a Fellow of the Society of Bookbinders, having founded and served as chairman of the Chester and North Wales branch in 1979. Paul has earned numerous awards and honours, including the Silver medal and three other awards in 1991 in The Bookbinding Competition. He was elected a Fellow of Designer Bookbinders in the same year; the following year he was awarded two Bronze medals in the prestigious Prix Paul Bonet. Paul invented the lacunose style of binding which is masterfully shown in this work, although he uses other methods as well. His work is highly prized and springs from within him; as he writes on his web site, "A book and its binding are inextricably linked - the one complements the other in a way which creates something more than just a book with an attractive cover. My design bindings draw on what a book says to me and how it inspires me emotionally". ***DESCRIPTION: Bound in the lacunose style (which involves layering pieces of leather, sanding them down to reveal the layers underneath, then pressing the panel which imparts a sheen to the leather; when pressed, the surface is very smooth to the touch, with interesting pits and furrows below the surface [N.B., from Paul Delrue]) with leathers used in colours of different blues, grey, greens, brown and tan; with swirls of lighter colour reminiscent of water pooling, and white featherstrokes. The volume was printed french-fold, with the lovely linocuts by J. Martin Pitts on each page in colours of brown, blue and white; most full-page (or nearly so), some spilling onto two pages, they lovingly echo the ethereal text of Roden Noel (1834-1894). Volume signed by both J. Martin Pitts and by Paul Delrue; folio size (approximately 12.5" tall), unpaginated. In a case also designed by Paul Delrue. ***CONDITION: Fine, in a fine slipcase. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         William S. Burroughs Signed Bullet Hole T-Shirt (Limited Edition)

Exotica Press, 1997. First Edition. Very Good. Signed by Author. Limited edition T-Shirt both shot and signed by William S. Burroughs. This shirt is one of three designs from Lawrence, Kansas design and marketing house, Exotica. The image is of the author, done in a 90s psychedelic style. Burroughs also provided the mysterious quote “Will he have 3-D in time?” that features on the shirt. The bullet holes on this particular shirt (shot by Burroughs) are small, adding a slight distressing effect. And Burroughs has signed it just below the graphic. From a 1997 article in Wired Magazine, titled Shootin’ the Shirt with William: “Lawrence, Kansas-based design and marketing house Exotica recently struck a deal with friend and neighbor William S. Burroughs, everyone's favorite postmodern junkie. Burroughs not only offers his visage and a quote for three T-shirt styles, he personally takes the shirts to the range, puts bullets through 'em, then autographs the smoldering cotton with a felt-tip pen.” Depending on the day, Burroughs would vary the way he signed the shirts. We have been told by the original owner of the shirt (who received it directly from Exotica) that in this case, the shirt was shot with a shotgun. Exotica also informed him that Burroughs then dipped a .38 slug in laundry ink and signed the shirt. Suitable for framing. Made by Exotica and William S. Burroughs CONDITION: Distressed. Shirt itself is in Very Good Condition, although there is some faint staining in a couple places on the shoulder and sleeves. Not immediately apparent. Shirt has three small bullet holes. SIZE: Extra Large. MEASUREMENTS: Shoulder to Shoulder: 22 1/2 inches. Chest: 48 inches. Length: 30 1/2 inches

Zirkuspädagogik : Grundsätze - Beispiele - Anregungen eine Dokumentation anläßlich des Internationalen Kinder-Jugend-Circus- & -Theaterfestivals in Hamburg 1997

Zustand: nahezu neuwertig. Match In A Bottle (With prospectus, origional order form, and selected additional leaves)

North Andover, Massachusetts: Kat Ran Press, 1997. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Gohde, Kurt. 4to - over 9" - 12" tall. 39 p. Signed by Author and Artist. The first book published by the Kat Ran Press, an impressive debut volume and somewhat scarce in the marketplace today. The illustrations were created by Kurt Gohde by means of using fire as a drawing medium - the natural pairing for this book of poetry dedicated to fire and its flames. Mr. Gohde uses highly imaginative techniques to create the path of smoke, using "techniques as varied as simply scaring the page with a single match", "to lighting lines of gun powder that had been carefully laid down on the page". Note that each of the eight images in the book "were each recreated over one hundred times. These are not prints, photographs, or offset reproductions. THEY ARE ORIGINAL DRAWINGS". (N.B., above quotes from the book's prospectus.) Our volume is no. 34 of 50 copies (there were another 15 copies NFS), with the 12-page prospectus and original order form loosely laid in; it also includes three additional selected signatures, including the title page and two illustrations. ***DESCRIPTION: Bound in red cloth specially imported from Japan, stamped with 22-karat gold foil displaying the title on the front, fore-edge uncut, title page in red and black, printed on Arches mould-made paper imported from Epinal, France, printed directly from metal types cast by Michael and Winifred Bixler, quarto size (approximately 11" tall), unpaginated with 24 leaves (including blanks), SIGNED by both Knapp and Gohde on the colophon page. Housed in a clam-shell box covered with the same red cloth as the book, title stamped in gold on the spine. ***CONDITION: Fine, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, perfectly straight corners with no rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings; the prospectus, order form, and additional signatures are also all in fine condition. We are grading the clam-shell box as near fine, held at a certain angle there seems to be a shadow on a portion of the back cloth, which may be a natural variation in the weave. ***CITATION: Kat Ran Checklist A1. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Published on the occasion of the travelling exhibition of the same name held in 1997 and 1998. Presents Helen Levitt's "Mexico City". Indelible photographs of the eponymous, tragic city. In 1941, Helen Levitt spent several months in Mexico, photographing the city and its inhabitants. Her work joins the best by such photographers as Tina Modotti, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Walker Evans, and Henri Cartier-Bresson, who all felt an urgent need to come to grips with the city. Without sentimentality, Helen Levitt captured the conflicts and juxtapositions that announced Mexico City's entry into the 20th century. "These images stand as crucial documents of an urban world caught in the throes of modernity, of a people, and of a nation that was leaving the village behind" (James Oles) . To show just that, Levitt personally selected the photographs in this collection, from among the hundreds she took, to represent her body of work on her other city, a searing contrast to her beloved New York, of which she has deservedly been called its visual Poet Laureate. An absolute "must-have" title for Helen Levitt collectors. <B><i> This copy is one of the Limited Slipcased Edition, indicated as such on the Back Limitation Page, and it is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully numbered and signed in black ink-pen by Helen Levitt. This title is a great photography book. This is one of very few copies of the Limited Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. </b></i> 67 duotone plates. Helen Levitt's "A Way of Seeing" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER HELEN LEVITT TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0393045498.

        Mural]: Mothership Connection. Parliament-Funkadelic

      - Large mural. Approximately 72" wide by 36" high. Luminous or florescent paint, probably acrylic-based (similar to DayGlo paint) in many colors on large 1/2" Weyerhaeuser plywood. Signed in the lower right quadrant: "Chet Williams, 12-11-78." Corners a little rounded, some rubbing to a few sections, grain of the plywood shows through a bit, overall very good. A spectacularly colorful accomplished representation of the band, staged in front of the giant Mothership, and with a cerise ray gun blast bisecting the painting horizontally. Parliament and The Funkadelics were two separate bands that played concurrently, both under the direction of George Clinton, and both with roughly the same complement of musicians. By the late 1970s, the term Parliament-Funkadelic became the catchall phrase for the creative and increasingly uncatagorizable music project. The wildly creative members of Parliament-Funkadelic, who played a mixture of funk, soul, psychedelic rock, and jazz improvisations, were an important influence on post-disco and post-punk music, as well as a seminal influence on hip hop music, and in some sense have become a genre unto themselves. In the years following their commercial decline, brought about by a number of reasons, hip hop DJs began to extensively sample P-Funk beats, which helped to reinvigorate the band, with the subsequent re-issue of their catalog and the reconstitution of the band. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. This spectacular vernacular mural pretty perfectly captures the P-Funk lineup at their most creative, as well as during their most commercially successful iteration, when they evolved the entire P-Funk mythos, complete with references to science-fiction, and featuring their prop "Mothership" that was central to their touring show. A unique artifactual evocation of the P-Funk phenomenon. We can find out nothing conclusive about the artist, but apparently this was found in southern Connecticut.

A Wavering Grace: a Vietnamese Family in War and Peace.

1997 - Viking. 1997. 8vo., original cloth with dust wrapper. A fine copy. First edition. "Gavin Young first visited Vietnam in 1965 at the time of the American invasion. He was to spend most of the next ten years there as a reporter for the Observer, but also as a kind of honorary citizen and adopted son, forming unusually close ties with the 'delightful, infinitely patient Vietnamese people' and with one family in particular. In a Wavering Grace one of our most distinguished travel writers offers us an unusual and affecting memoir, a unique view of a tragic land. It is the tale of one man's relationship with a people and a place, but even more it is the tale of one indomitable family, whose own lives read like a chronicle of twentieth century Vietnamese history." With a quantity of related material including three typed drafts of the work, dated May to July 1996 with manuscript corrections and amendments by Gavin Young, Peter Carson and Gritta Weil (some on post-its). Each draft is c. 200pp. typed on the rectos only. Also with various typed drafts of chapters from the book, annotated in manuscript by Young and Weil (c. 600pp). With a folder containing an annotated set of page proofs of the early chapters, with editorial notes and correspondence between the author, Gritta Weil, and the publisher discussing corrections, rights payments, advance puffs etc. Some of the correspondence is faxed and therefore fading. Provenance: From the estate of Gritta Weil (1924-2009), a refugee from Germany, who worked for The Observer from 1945 to 1984, and was a close friend of the travel writer and journalist for the same paper, Gavin Young (1928-2001), who is most remembered for his 1977 book Return to the Marshes, based on his life with the Marsh Arabs of Iraq. This was followed by an account of his travels in Mesopotamia in 1980. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
