        BLINDNESS

New York City, NY: Harcourt Brace, 1997. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. New York City, NY: Harcourt Brace, 1997. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 294 pages. The author&#39;s sixth novel to be translated into English. One of the greatest novels of the 20th century. The first appearance of the title in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now very scarce. Presents Jose Saramago&#39;s "Ensaio sobre a Cegueira", his anti-totalitarian allegory/novel, in a felicitous English translation. It is the very last translation by Giovanni Pontiero, to whom the book is dedicated (together with Saramago&#39;s wife Pilar and daughter Violante). Saramago considered himself very lucky (rightly so) to have had two masterly English translators (Pontiero was succeeded by Margaret Jull Costa). By the most cruelly ironic twist of fate, Pontiero was already gravely ill when he was working on "Blindness". "He was translating &#39;Blindness&#39;, which he finished. Then he died. Toward the end, he himself started to go blind as a result of medication his doctors gave him. He had to choose between taking the medication, which would sustain him for a bit longer, and not taking it, which would create other risks. He chose, shall we say, to preserve his vision, and he was translating a novel about blindness. It was a devastating situation" (Jose Saramago). Saramago was an anomaly who came out of nowhere, seemingly born a genius. Every single page of every single book he has ever written makes the reader feel that he or she is in the hands of an unsurpassable Master. "He got ahead of us; he is ahead of us. His work belongs to our future" (Ursula K. LeGuin). The basis of the fine film adaptation by Fernando Meirelles, with Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo. An absolute "must-have" title for Jose Saramago collectors. <b><i> This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Jose Saramago. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page or bookplate. This title is now highly collectible. This is one of very few signed copies of the First American Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Among the Nobel Laureates and other great writers of our time, Saramago&#39;s signature was the most difficult to get because he rarely left Lanzarote, the island he moved to at the height of his fame. Now that he is dead, he isn&#39;t signing any more copies. And yet, signed copies of his books, while not exactly cheap, remain under-priced as compared to those of say, Gabriel Garcia Marquez or Cormac McCarthy. While they are great writers, Saramago will be regarded by posterity as a greater writer than both of them, and there is no British or American novelist of the last fifty years, living or dead, who comes close to Saramago&#39;s achievement (except, according to Harold Bloom, for Philip Roth at his best). A rare signed copy thus. </B></i> Regarded by Harold Bloom as one of the two greatest novelists of our time (the other being Philip Roth), Jose Saramago will be read as probably the greatest European novelist of the last fifty years. Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1998. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JOSE SARAMAGO TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0151002517.

New York: St. Martin&#39;s Press, 1997. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Signed by Author(s) Second printing, signed on the half title page by both authors, and dated by Boukreev on 11/14/97, about a month before he was killed in an avalanche on Annapurna. As new.         Echoes of An Autobiography

New York: Doubleday, 1997. First edition. Octavo. Fine in near fine dust jacket. Signed by both Nobel Laureates Naguib Mahfouz and Nadine Gordimer, who contributed the foreword to this volume. Both signatures were obatined in person. Naguib Mahfouz was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1988 for his status as one of the first contemporary writers of Arabic literature to explore themes of existentialism (Gordon, 2007). He published 34 novels, 350 short stories, dozens of movie scripts, and five plays over a 70-year career. Many of his works have been made into Egyptian and foreign films. Mahfouz&#39;s work describes the development of his country, Egypt, in the 20th-century but in a manner that combine the literary techniques of Eastern and Western literature, authors such as Marcel Proust and Franz Kafka. His stories are set in the densely populated urban areas of Cairo, and his characters are ordinary people who must cope with the modernization of society and the temptations of Western values.

The World Crisis (first abridged and revised edition)

This is the first abridged edition of Churchill's monumental and acclaimed history of World War I in the original first printing dust jacket - one of the most striking and rare dust jackets in the Churchill canon.  The front face of the yellow-tan dust jacket features a full-length, half-tone photograph of Churchill striding, in top hat and tails with walking stick in hand.  The rear cover features a smaller head and shoulders image of Churchill in the uniform of the South African Light Horse (set amid an advertisement for A Roving Commission).  Writing in 1997, Churchill expert Richard Langworth said of this dust jacket "I know of only two or three of these in existence."  We know of a few more than that, but certainly only a small number survive and very few collectors are able to own them.  This first abridged and revised edition is not simply an abridgement, but a genuine first edition in its own right; Churchill made significant revisions and added a new introduction and an entire new chapter on the Battle of the Marne.  Moreover, the U.S. edition preceded the British, making it the true first edition.  This copy is very good plus in the dust jacket.  The navy cloth binding is square, clean, and tight with sharp corners and bright spine gilt.  The only exterior flaw noted is some flaking of the gilt at the lower spine affecting the publisher's name and the gilt rule below.  The contents remain clean and bright.  We find no previous ownership marks and no internal spotting.  All of the extensive maps and charts are present and properly folded.  A partial split of the paper at the upper title page gutter is cosmetic only, with the mull beneath fully intact and the contents remaining tight within the binding.  We note very light spotting to the page edges.  The rare dust jacket is substantially intact but showing overall wear and soiling.  The jacket shows minor chipping to a maximum depth of .25 inch at the spine ends and front face.  There is wear along the hinges and flap folds, small losses at the flap folds, and overall soiling.  The upper front flap is neatly price-clipped, with the original $5 price intact on the spine.  A desirable survivor withal.  The jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover.  Bibliographic reference: Cohen A69.5.a, Woods/ICS A31(ba.1), Langworth p.115.

        The Great Mystery

American Indian Mystery Press, 1997. First Edition/Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine in Fine Archival Case. Tight, bright and unmarred. Full Japanese linen cloth, black Niger goatskin label, gilt and scarlet lettering; matching tray case. 4to. np. Illus. (color plates). Numbered limited edition, this being 25 of 60. Twenty-three color printed etchings by Bogardus. Text printed by Arthur Larson, Horton Tank Graphics. Bound by Gray Parrot. "The Great Mystery is a collaboration between the artist Peter Bogardus, who made the etchings, and Russell Means, who composed a handwritten text that was been relief-printed. The initial concept for the project occurred during a visit by the artist to the Oglala Lakota Indian Reservation at Pine Ridge, South Dakota. Allowed access to tribal archives, Mr. Bogardus was able to study many original photographic references. The iconography in these ancient images of the then still free Plains peoples provided inspiration for the etchings. At the same time the reality of late 20th century reservation life served to temper any tendency to romanticize the past. Thus the etchings are a vehicle for revisiting history while the text by Russell Means connects this history to the present, the "now time". Mr. Means is an Oglala Lakota and one of the founders of the American Indian Movement; he has been instrumental in activating pride among his people and awareness of their condition among the people of the larger US society and beyond. He is renowned as an orator. His captions to the etchings are contemporary responses to the history of his peoples&#39; contact with those who came from Europe. The extended prose is based on a traditional prayer on the horizon at dawn. The Great Mystery is one name for the Creator.
