Encyclopedia of Indo-European Culture [Hardcover] von James Mallory (Herausgeber), D. Q. Adams (Herausgeber)

Fitzroy Dearborn Publishers, 1997. Auflage: Ill (Oktober 1997). Hardcover. Good. 28,8 x 22,1 x 5,3 cm. The Encyclopedia of Indo-European Culture provides the fullest and most inclusive coverage yet compiled of the major Indo-European language stocks and their origins, and the conceptual range of the reconstructed Proto-Indo-European language. The encyclopedia also offers entries on selected archaeological cultures having some relationship to the origin and dispersal of Indo-European groups, and on some of the major issues of Indo-European cultural studies. With over 700 entries, written by seventeen leading specialists, the Encyclopedia of Indo-European Culture is an essential reference work for all scholars and students in this field. In addition, its detailed indexing and clear layout and organization will ensure that readers find it easy to use. Outstanding Academic Book Approximately half the world's population speaks an Indo-European language, which is only one of the 20 or so language families. There are more than 140 Indo-European languages, each reflecting, to a greater or lesser extent, their common culture and heritage. Encyclopedia of Indo-European Culture attempts to take a snapshot of current scholarship in the field, covering the major language stocks, their origins, some selected cultures, and a few of the major issues in the field. The editors, scholars on the faculties of Queens University, Belfast, and the University of Idaho, respectively, note that the arrangement of the work is conceptual; therefore, its use as an etymological dictionary is limited, though there is an extensive language index providing access to words in languages such as Old Irish, New English, Czech, or Ukrainian, to name but a few. Most of the entries are devoted to the reconstruction of specific proto-Indo-European (PIE) words. These entries generally consist of the PIE form as far as it can be reconstructed, a glossary, references to sources, linguistic data, a brief discussion, and a short list of additional readings. Abbreviations and technical terminology, used extensively, are defined at the front of the volume. The entries are arranged alphabetically, with a complete list available at the outset. Also available are a general index and a thematic listing of entries. The latter lists 26 subjects, such as animals, law, and mind. The nonlexical entries vary in length, breadth, and scope. The contributors sign most, while some also provide a bibliography of further readings. The five-page entry Celtic Languages, for example, discusses their description and origins. The article includes some maps and a bibliography citing some of the standard works and dictionaries. Other nonlexical entries relate to archaeology and culture. Encyclopedia of Indo-European Culture is an impressive work of collaborative scholarship. As such, most academic libraries would be remiss not to have it. Reality suggests, however, that in such fiscally austere times, this work is so specialized that many libraries will choose not to purchase it. 'Substantive and easy to use, this reference source has been written both to inform and as a platform for further research, covering the major Indo-European languages and stocks, the reconstruction of a Proto-Indo-European language, related archaeological cultures, and the state of Indo-European studies today. It contains nearly 1,000 alphabetically ordered entries contributed by respected scholars ... Recommended for students and specialists interested in this topic as well as college and university libraries supporting historical or linguistic study.' CHOICE 'The book is a delight to read and use.' Indo-European Studies Bulletin J.P. Mallory's "In Search of the Indo-Europeans" is the best one-volume survey of the origins and dispersal of the Indo-European languages. The "Encyclopedia" is more technical, but gives a highly detailed view of the interrelationships of the IE languages and what we can deduce concerning the speakers of the original ur-sprach. NBin view of the review above, and out of consideration to uniformed readers, one should point out that Indo-European linguistics is a well-established field throughout the world scholarly community. Who The Devil Made It

New York: Alfred A. Knopf,, 1997. Conversations with Robert Aldrich, George Cukor, Allan Dwan, Howard Hawks, Alfred Hitchcock, Chuck Jones, Fritz Lang, Joseph H. Lewis, Sidney Lumet, Leo McCarey, Otto Preminger, Don Siegel, Josef von Sternberg, Frank Tashlin, Edgar C. Ulmer, Raoul Walsh. Octavo. Original burgundy boards, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. An excellent copy in the jacket that is just a little rubbed along the edges. First edition, first printing of this volume of conversations with filmmakers that IMDB calls an "indispensable tome that establishes Bogdanovich… as one of the premier English-language chroniclers of cinema". Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "3/97 Dearest Cybski – We used to be artists together, friends & lovers together, and eventually these three were reduced to only one: friends, separately. And then? Anyway, this book is in memory of all three – and with the hope for at least another double-play, as artists & friends – we owe that to us – Love always – Peter a.k.a. Sven… as I wing back to NYC for a while – love to Clem & the twins & Myrtle – and I hope you're happy –". Bogdanovich had fallen in love with Cybill Shepherd after casting her in a lead role in his first major film, The Last Picture Show. Bogdanovich's nickname, Sven, is a reference to Svengali, a character in George DuMaurier's novel Trilby who uses hypnosis to teach a young woman to sing and then controls her talent for his own gain. A lovely copy with a highly personal association.

Gifts of the Leaves with Prints from the Ova Series by Julia Ferrari

Ashuelot: Trois Fontaines [Golgonooza Letter Foundry]. 1997. One of 26 lettered "de tete" copies from a total issue of 109 (26 lettered copies, 80 numbered copies, 3 Artist's Proof copies), all on Arches paper, each signed and numbered or lettered by the author and type designer, punch cutter and printer, Dan Carr, and the artist, Julia Ferrari. As an example of contemporary book arts, this may well be unique, I can think of no other book of contemporary verse where the author / printer has designed and cut a unique type face for his book. The lettered copy has a unique colored monotype on Richard de Bas paper as the frontispiece of the book, a copper strike from the hand cut punches bound into the custom-made clamshell box housing the book, and four etchings. Page size: 12-1/2 inches x 9-1/4 inches; 74pp. Bound by Julia Ferrari: hand-made pastepaper over boards housed in black cloth clamshell box with copper strike from the hand cut punches inlaid into inside front panel of box, pastepaper spine label, new. _ Dan Carr created a type face called Regulus after the star rising through the trees when the first alphabet was completed for his verse. In the Preface he states he views "the poems are collected as an alphabet." The collections of verse, he goes on, are about "transformation found in the seasons of a year...my poems revealed a kind of stations of the soul, the cycle of the seasons of frost and sun." The theme of transformation that occurs in nature and that constancy of change are perfectly interpreted in words and image.
See an Image.
WEST BAY

London, England: The Rocket Press, 1997. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. London, England: The Rocket Press, 1997. Hardcover. Fine/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. Unpaginated. Collection of color photographs with accompanying original poems, presented as an Artist Book. One of the greatest photography books of the 20th century. Limited Edition of 250 numbered and signed copies. A brilliant production by Martin Parr and Jonathan Stephenson: Oversize-volume format in oblong shape. Pictorial cloth boards with titles stamped on spine, as issued. Photographs by Martin Parr, each of which is delicately tipped onto the page. Text by various poets. Preface by Jonathan Stephenson. The photographs were scanned from the original color prints made by Peter Fraser and printed using UV inks and varnish by Jackson Wilson Leeds. The text is on Mohawk Superfine paper by John Purcell Paper London and printed by B. A. S. Printers Over Wallop. The binding in Bognor Deckchair Canvas was supplied by Oddies Textiles and made by The Fine Bindery Wellingborough. The typesetting in Sabon and Optima Medium was created by Rocket Press. Blue cloth slipcase with titles stamped on both sides. Without DJ, as issued. To mark the book's auspicious publication, a selection of the photographs was exhibited at the Rocket Gallery London from July through September 1997. Presents Martin Parr's piquant yet poignant portraits of the seaside resort called West Bay. His final selection was shown to eight poets, some of whom had also visited the resort. The poems therefore mark their responses both to the place itself and to Parr's photographs of it. The poets include Philip Gross, Fergus Allen, Kate Clanchy, Roger McGough, Alice Oswald, Sophie Hannah, Vicki Raymond, and Geoffrey Hoare, contributing 23 poems in all. These complement Parr's "ability to tune in to the idiosyncrasies of contemporary British culture. Together the photographs and poems open up horizons beyond West Bay and form a perceptive commentary on class, taste, fears, and aspirations" (Jonathan Stephenson). Perhaps, and that is to be expected of the leading British ironist/photographer. But it must also be said that the images in "West Bay" are among Martin Parr's most beautiful. His observer's detachment is deepened, not weakened, by a lyricism that pervades the work. "West Bay" shows the range of his astringent sensibility, that it has a more lyrical, even sentimental side. For one thing, the formal use of color, a Parr trademark, is deployed using a less saturated, more muted, and more subdued palette that people familiar with Parr's work will find unexpectedly moving. It is not possible to understand the art and photography of our time without taking stock of Martin Parr's work and achievement. A "must-have" title for Martin Parr collectors. This copy is one of the Limited Edition, indicated as such on the Back Limitation Page, and is very prominently and beautifully numbered and signed in blue pen by Martin Parr. This is one of very few copies of the Limited Edition still available online and despite the publisher's flaw (slight rubbing on slipcase) is still in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 24 color plates. The most influential and most important living British photographer. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER MARTIN PARR TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).

        SILENT BOOK

Sao Paulo, Brasil: Cosac & Naify, 1997. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. Sao Paulo, Brasil: Cosac & Naify, 1997. Hardcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 98 pages. Artist Book. One of the greatest photography books of the 20th century. The first and only edition. Published in a very small and limited print run as a hardcover original only. The book is now very rare. A brilliant production by Miguel Rio Branco and Jean-Yves Cousseau: Small-size volume format in square shape. Pictorial hard boards with red titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Miguel Rio Branco. There is no text. Printed on thick coated stock paper in Italy to the very highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents some of the artist/photographer's most stunning images, all of them in "bleed" format. Miguel Rio Branco's work has been praised (and criticized) for the way it vividly depicts the quiet anguish, carnal sensuality, and explosive violence of Latin America. It is the Latin spirit (rather than the continent itself) that interests him, and he has photographed in Europe to capture this "Latinity". His sequencing of images has also been called "musical"; it is no accident that many of his books include a CD that is meant to be listened to while one views the images. "Silent Book" is the outstanding exception, his tribute to the deafening silence at the heart of his dissonant images. The violence depicted is ritualistic rather than actual (many of the photographs were taken in a boxing gym and at a bullfight) and its true purpose is not, "as some suggest, to incite violence outside, but to mitigate or break the cycle" (Martin Parr and Gerry Badger). A contributing member of Magnum, it is hard to think of him as a documentary photographer. Indeed, his work is about the fundamentally subjective, non-documentary character of reality. The robust and simmering physicality of his images is the work of an artist/photographer who shows the underbelly of Roman Catholicism in all of its "Latinity, an extreme lyricism, contrasting affectivity and violence" (Adolfo Montejo). "My work has a lot to do with skin, for that is the surface connecting us to the world, in pleasure as much as in pain. Skin is a dialogue between outside and inside, a separation that is also a connection" (Miguel Rio Branco). A book of tremendous power and beauty, it pulsates with life and makes most other photography books look lifeless. A "must-have" title for Miguel Rio Branco and photography book collectors. This is an Import title and is now very highly collectible. This is one of very few copies still available online and has absolutely no flaws, a pristine beauty. Copies turn up occasionally online but have major flaws. A very rare copy thus. 75 color plates. Miguel Rio Branco's "Silent Book" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest living artist/photographers. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER MIGUEL RIO BRANCO TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 8586374210.

The World Crisis (first abridged and revised edition)

Here is a rarity. This is the first abridged edition of Churchill's monumental and acclaimed history of World War I in the original first printing dust jacket - one of the most striking and rare dust jackets in the Churchill canon. The front face of the yellow-tan dust jacket features a full-length, half-tone photograph of Churchill striding, in top hat and tails with walking stick in hand. The rear cover features a smaller head and shoulders image of Churchill in the uniform of the South African Light Horse (set amid an advertisement for A Roving Commission). Writing in 1997, Churchill expert Richard Langworth said of this dust jacket "I know of only two or three of these in existence..." We know of a few more than that, but certainly a small number survive and very few collectors are able to own them. This first abridged and revised edition is not simply an abridgement, but a genuine first edition in its own right; Churchill made significant revisions and added a new introduction and an entire new chapter on the Battle of the Marne. Moreover, the U.S. edition preceded the British, making it the true first edition. The copy offered here is a remarkably complete survivor, fine in a very good dust jacket. The navy cloth binding is bright, clean, and square with sharp corners and bright spine gilt. We note only a small blemish at the rear hinge. The contents are beautifully clean and tight with no spotting. The sole previous ownership mark is a tiny bookshop sticker only lightly affixed to the rear pastedown. All of the extensive maps and charts are present and pristine. Even the untrimmed fore edge is immaculate. Searching for flaws, we can report only light dust soiling to the top edge. The dust jacket is unclipped, clean, and highly complete, still bearing the original $5 price on the front flap, spine, and front face. Trivial losses are confined to a fractional chipping to a maximum depth of 1/8 inch at the spine ends and corners. The jacket is also notably clean. The sole notable flaw is what likely resulted in this jacket being so well-preserved - a vertical crease at the spine delineating some differential toning, with the left 40 percent of the spine darker than the right. It seems likely that the jacket was once folded along this crease and stored, likely with the toned side of the spine exposed to sun. Despite this forgivable flaw, this is a highly complete and desirable survivor. The jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover. Additional images available upon request. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A69.5.a, Woods/ICS A31(ba.1), Langworth p.115

        The Great Mystery

American Indian Mystery Press, 1997. First Edition/Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine in Fine Archival Case. Tight, bright and unmarred. Full Japanese linen cloth, black Niger goatskin label, gilt and scarlet lettering; matching tray case. 4to. np. Illus. (color plates). Numbered limited edition, this being 25 of 60. Twenty-three color printed etchings by Bogardus. Text printed by Arthur Larson, Horton Tank Graphics. Bound by Gray Parrot. "The Great Mystery is a collaboration between the artist Peter Bogardus, who made the etchings, and Russell Means, who composed a handwritten text that was been relief-printed. The initial concept for the project occurred during a visit by the artist to the Oglala Lakota Indian Reservation at Pine Ridge, South Dakota. Allowed access to tribal archives, Mr. Bogardus was able to study many original photographic references. The iconography in these ancient images of the then still free Plains peoples provided inspiration for the etchings. At the same time the reality of late 20th century reservation life served to temper any tendency to romanticize the past. Thus the etchings are a vehicle for revisiting history while the text by Russell Means connects this history to the present, the "now time". Mr. Means is an Oglala Lakota and one of the founders of the American Indian Movement; he has been instrumental in activating pride among his people and awareness of their condition among the people of the larger US society and beyond. He is renowned as an orator. His captions to the etchings are contemporary responses to the history of his peoples' contact with those who came from Europe. The extended prose is based on a traditional prayer on the horizon at dawn. The Great Mystery is one name for the Creator.
