        Histoire du Soldat

Gonfalon Press, NP 1997 - A fine copy in all respects of this scarce volume. From the limited edtion of 110 copies, this one being number 95. Signed by Vonnegut and the book's creater and illustrator, Michael Fallon. Four color woodblock plates. An interesting history here. The work was initially conceived by Igor Stravinsky during the dark days of World War I. Because the war was so broad and all consuming Stravinsky found that he couldn't compose music for large ensembles and expect them to be performed because the war effort drained so many rescources. He decided to create an intimate work for small ensemble, spoken word, and dance. C.F. Ramuz wrote the original libretto, telling the story of a soldier returning from war who meets the devil along the way. The devil convinces the soldier to place a wager revolving around the playing of the soldier's violin. The work ends with the devil winning the wager by, no surprise here, cheating. Vonnegut doesn't comment much on the music but he seemed incensed by the libretto and wrote this work as his response. He deems Ramuz a hack and the libretto a weak trifle. Vonnegut's story involves Private Eddie Slovik, (un-named in this treatment) the only US solider executed by firing squad during the World War II. The text is much harsher than the original treatment and much less forgiving. [Attributes: First Edition]

Gifts of the Leaves with Prints from the Ova Series by Julia Ferrari.

Trois Fontaines [Golgonooza Letter Foundry], Ashuelot 1997 - One of 80 regular copies from a total issue of 109 copies (80 numbered copies, 26 lettered copies, and 3 Artist's Proof copies), all on Arches paper, each signed and numbered or lettered by the author and type designer, punch cutter and printer, Dan Carr, and the artist and binder, Julia Ferrari. The 80 numbered copies have one etching and three duotone reproductions by Julia Ferrari, who has also written an "Artist Afterword" and designed the beautiful shaped colophon. As an example of contemporary book arts, this may well be unique, I can think of no other book of contemporary verse where the author / printer has designed and cut a unique type face for his book. Page size: 12-1/2 inches x 9-1/4 inches; 72pp. Bound by Julia Ferrari: handmade green pastepaper with black and brown overall abstract design, corresponding to the frontispiece etching, title in black on white label on spine. All the numbered edition copies correspond to one season, depending on the frontispiece etching. That is, there are four variations of the book in the numbered edition with the different pastepapers used in the binding keyed to the original frontispiece etching.Dan Carr created a type face called Regulus after the star rising through the trees when the first alphabet was completed for his verse. In the Preface he states he views "the poems are collected as an alphabet." The collections of verse, he goes on, are about "transformation found in the seasons of a year.my poems revealed a kind of stations of the soul, the cycle of the seasons of frost and sun." The theme of transformation that occurs in nature and that constancy of change are perfectly interpreted in words and image. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Match in a Bottle

Kat Ran Press, United States 1997 - An exceptionally striking fine press book. Handsewn and bound by Winifred Bixler in boards covered by red cloth. The book is housed in a similarly covered clam-shell case. Printed on Arches, this book contains seven poems by Tracey Knapp and is illustrated with 8 original (unique) smoke drawings by Kurt Gohde. In a note on the drawings, Gohde wrote, "By drawing with smoke, I try to catch the moment immediately after [an action takes place]. Fixing the smoke onto paper stops its natural dissipation - alluding to the flame that produced it. These drawings exist like scars that tell the stories of their own creation." This book, which is signed by both the poet and the artist, was the first book offered by Michael Russem's Kat Ran Press. It was published in an edition of 50 (plus an additional 15, A-O, not for sale), of which this is number 17. This book rarely is available for sale; it sold out shortly after it was issued. The book, the case, and the original prospectus announcing the book's publication are all in as-new condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Testimonio Editorial, Madrid - 1997. BEATUS OF LIEBANA - CODEX URGELLENSIS * Limited Facsimile Edition * Manuscript Num. Inv. 501 Museu Diocesa d'Urgell (La Seu d'Urgell, Spain) * Facsimile Edition: 1 volume * Commentary: 1 volume * Mint copy

Testimonio Editorial, Madrid - 1997. BEATUS OF LIEBANA - CODEX URGELLENSIS * * * Beatus of Liebana (died after 798) was a Spanish monk and theologian. He became famous through his comments on the biblical apocalypse in twelve volumes (around 776). The text is preserved in 34 manuscripts and fragments from the 9th to the 16th century. The illustrated manuscripts are each also called Beatus. Beatus's motivation for the comments on the apocalypse was the world's end that was expected for the year 800. * * * The Urgell Beatus was probably created in the 10th century in La Seu d'Urgell, an episcopal city founded 980 in the Pyrenees. Most likely the splendidly equipped handwriting with its 86 miniatures was a gift from Count of Urgell and Valladolid to the bishop of the city, who later ordered the construction of the present cathedral. * * * Title: Beatus of Liebana - Codex Urgellensis * Owner / Shelf mark: Num. Inv. 501 Museu Diocesa d'Urgell (La Seu d'Urgell, Spain) * Alternative Titles: Beatus of La Seu d'Urgell * Seu de Urgell Beatus * Beato de La Seu de Urgell * Beato de la Seo de Urgell * Urgell Beatus * Urgell Apokalypse * Theme: Beatus / Apocalypse * Style: Romanesque * Date: Shortly after 970 * Origin: Spain * Format: 39.8 × 27 cm * Extent: 478 pages * Language: Latin * Content: The script of the manuscript is round visigothic, in two columns. Although there is no colophon and therefore no exact date for its completion is known, stylistic analysis suggests that it must have been copied shortly after 970, like the Valcavado Beato with which it bears many similarities * Artists / Schools: Mozarabic art * Illustrations: 79 miniatures * Patron: Armengol V (1092-1102) * Former Owners / Provenance: St. Otto, Bishop of Urgell, who was also responsible for the builiding of today's cathedral * * * Facsimile Edition * Publisher / Year: Testimonio Editorial, Madrid - 1997 * Limited Edition: 980 copies * Volumes: Facsimile Edition: 1 volume * Commentary: 1 volume * Commentary: English, Spanish * Publisher's Price: 4,680 EUR * Binding: Brown goatskin with embossings and brass fittings and clasps * Condition: Mint copy.
