TAG UND NACHT. [DAY AND NIGHT.]

John Gerard, (Berlin) 1992 - small 4to. Gray paper covered boards opening from either end with pages accordian style. 10 leaves printed on both sides. Limited to 20 numbered copies signed by Gerard and Best. Text and Images by Fritz Best. A double-sided accordion fold book with pulp paper images and text by Fritz Best, produced in collaboration with John Gerard on handmade papers of cotton. Images and text for Tag on one side of the book, and images and text for Nacht on the other. Grey endboards with title. "Day and Night was the result of an invitation to Fritz Best to make a book in the paper medium in my Berlin workshop. He had been in and out of the workshop for months, seen how many of the techniques function, but still had many questions. The theme he chose was the departure from Berlin, as he was to leave that year back to London and I was to move to the Rhineland. The book reflects all of the chaotic conditions in Berlin: traffic, dogs, the remains of the wall, office work and ends with a relaxing bottle of beer. All of the images are done in paper pulp using stencil techniques; the text was printed in silver, using nylon cliches. This is Fritz Best's first book." - Gerard.       The Arion Press, San Francisco 1992 - No. 196 of 200 for sale (plus 26 not for sale), signed by Ginsberg (with circled initials below). Written three years after the death of his mother, Ginsberg focused on a cryptic note left to him by her, the mother who had been hospitalized for mental illness for many years, and used that as his inspiration for the poem written in her honour. The volume contains, at Ginsberg's suggestion, two related poems that also relate to his mother. Bound into the volume, facing each other, are two lithographs by R.B. Kitaj, portraits of Allen and Naomi Ginsberg, picturing them both at about age 30; the lithograph of Naomi is signed in pencil by Kitaj. ***DESCRIPTION: Bound in two colours of imported Japanese cloth, black with tan fibers and greyed blueish green, black lettering on the front, binding design unusual with a flap enclosing the fore-edge that folds into the front cover; cream endpapers, fore- and bottom edges uncut, copy number and Allen Ginsberg's signatures on the half-title page in pencil, his signature with his initials below enclosed in a circle, lithographs bound in after the introduction and before the poems with a tissue guard between the two prints; large quarto size (approximately 12.25" tall), pagination: (1)-18 being the preliminary pages and the introduction, sectional title for the lithographs (19), the two lithographs (20 and 21), blank (22), sectional title for the poems (23), 24-62 being the three poems, colophon (63), Imprint type hand-set, on T.H. Saunders mould-made paper.         Pictures From Home.

New York: Harry H Abrams, 1992. First edition. Oblong quarto, original cloth. Signed by Larry Sultan. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Edited by Eric Himmel. Designed by Katy Homans, with Sayre Coombs. Larry Sultan's Pictures from Home (1982-92) is part family album, part visual novella, bringing together family snapshots, memento mori, and text. This portrait of the home evokes the critical issues of aging, disparity, wealth, relationships, real estate and ubiquitous family values, and conveys the conventional clich? benchmarks that define postwar American nuclear families: birth of children, financial security, corporate success, as well as the need for a life outside the home. An intimate record of the mundane existence of everyday events and rituals found in the home captures optimism, humor, dislocation; it reveals intimate lives and perpetuates fa?ades like secrets disclosed. Sultan understands the camera's function as the family's primary instrument of self-knowledge and self-representation by which family memory perpetuates, using it to re-examine family, but also undermining any claim that photographs and their arrangements are necessarily an accurate form of documentation of family life (Merriah Lamb). Cited in Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook: A History, Volume II.

Sigmund Freud«. Original-Farblithographie.

        Plant Drawings

New York: Matthew Marks Gallery. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. FIRST EDITION of Kelly's Plant Drawings, with essay by John Ashbery. Number 31 of 100 (of a planned but unrealized 150) hardbound copies SIGNED BY KELLY AND ASHBERY. "I think what we all want from art is a sense of fixity, a sense of opposing the chaos of daily living. This is an illusion, of course. What I've tried to capture is the reality of flux, to keep art an open, incomplete situation, to get at the rapture of seeing." -- Ellsworth Kelly Produced for an exhibition at the Matthew Marks Gallery in the Fall of 1992, Ellsworth Kelly's Plant Drawings presents nearly half a century of botanical portraiture, consisting mainly of contour drawings of leaves, stems, and flowers. Relying on line alone to convey depth, Kelly's drawings are reductive yet pronounced. In fact, Kelly insists that his drawings are "portraits of flowers, not anonymous", with each panel corresponding to a specific plant found in his travels. New York: Matthew Marks Gallery, 1992. Octavo (9 3/4" x 12 1/4"), original white cloth, original dust jacket, numbered and signed by Ellsworth Kelly and John Ashbery, this being number 31 of 100 such copies. A wonderful reflection on abstraction in the natural world. A fine copy. RARE.

Book Description: First in the author's five-volume series The Corps, SEMPER FI sets the stage for WW II. It is the '30s, and we meet the old corps, as it existed between WW I and WW II -- on station in Shanghai, at Quantico, in Washington, all nicely contrasted with civilian life stateside. But the calendar is moving relentlessly toward a fatal day in 1941. When it comes, we understand why nothing could ever be the same again -- and what it's going to take to win the awful conflict into which we have been bloodily and unpreparedly thrust.
