Mark Strand
Published by Red Butte Press (Salt Lake City 1993). First Edition. Of 95 copies, 75 of which were for sale, this is copy XVIII of 20 copies hors commerce. Printed on an 1846 Columbian handpress on untrimmed handmade cotton rag paper from the Twinrocker Paper Mill, bound in gray-brown cloth with abstract designs in black on the covers and spine, in an unprinted folding box of the same cloth. 7-1/2 x 15 in. 40 pp., unpaginated. Unread. The book is Brand New; there are a few faint water (?) stains on the rear of the box, as shown (faintly) in the image of the box.. Mark Strand has written a paragraph, one to a page, on "influences" on his life or work or thought for each letter of the alphabet. Bonnie Sucec drew each of the initial letters and then hand-painted in each of the 95 copies those letters and the horizontal title page drawing shown (though not too well) in the photo at left. That photo shows both an open copy of the book and, to display the cover design, a closed copy as well. Only copy XVIII (in its box) is being offered. As shown in the other photo, the book is signed below the colophon by Strand and Sucec. Strand's text was reprinted, as "A Poet's Alphabet," in his collection of essays, The Weather of Words (Knopf 2000). Red Butte Press, founded in 1984, is known for the high quality of its books. Most copies of its publications go to those who subscribe to all Red Butte publications, including the rare book collections of major libraries. Copies of this title rarely come on the market, hors commerce copies (obviously) even less often. Mr. Strand, whose honors in … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Biblical Text]; Feldman, Walter (Artist)
(New Brunswick): (Rutgers Center for Innovative Printmaking), (1993). Feldman, Walter. Limited Edition. No. 7 of 18, folio size, seven unbound folio sheets, signed by Walter Feldman. Walter Sidney Feldman (1925-2017) received numerous awards and critical praise spanning a lifetime achievement over seven decades; his paintings were shown in numerous one-man and group exhibitions in New York, Mexico City, London, Milan, and Boston. Since 1985, he had designed and published books under the Ziggurat Press imprint he created, and his books are now in more than 150 public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Albert and Victoria Museum in London (n. b. info from Legacy website). This work, "The Creation", issued in an edition of only eighteen copies, was done as a gift to his son, Steven Chaim, on the occasion of his Bar Mitzvah. The work consists of seven unbound folio sheets, an introduction followed by one for each of the six days of the creation story, with each sheet containing a few verses from that story (according to the Masoretic text). What makes the work sensational - filling one's senses - are the incredible lithographs on each sheet, surrounding and illuminating the biblical texts. Feldman had held these six serial images in his imagination for a long time, making a similar six part painting series in 1955. When invited in January of 1993 to be a visiting artist at the Rutgers Center for Innovative Printmaking, he worked with the director, Judith Brodsky, and the master printer, Eileen Foti, to create this marvellous work using toner as … [Click Below for Full Description]

Freud, Sigmund; Wollheim, Richard (Introduction); Dine, Jim (Artist)
San Francisco: The Arion Press, 1993. Dine, Jim. Limited Edition. No. 129 of 276 copies, quarto size, 117 pp., signed by Jim Dine. "Wolf-Man" was the pseudonym given to Sergei Pankejeff (1886-1979), a Russian aristrocrat and patient of Sigmund Freud (1856-1939), named thus because of a dream Pankejeff had in his childhood, of a tree full of white wolves; the dream would become significant in the development of Freud's theories, particularly of psychosexual development, although Freud's interpretations of the dream have since been criticised for lacking objective evidence as well as for the outcome of Freud's treatment of Pankejeff's mental illness. This Arion Press edition is illustrated by American Pop artist Jim Dine (b. 1935), with etchings and woodcuts that convey the artist's immersion into the character behind the work; Dine writes in the Artist's Statement, "When the Wolf-Man found me, he grabbed me by the back of my thick neck and told me his story. . . .For me, the privilege and the horror has been to look at the poor guy's wounds and report." Dine's prints contain forceful mark making and a chaotic darkness, delving into the mind and suffering of the patient Pankejeff. ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter black leather with brown cloth boards, illustration in black of a wolf and a boy on the front board, silver lettering on the spine, fore- and bottom edges uncut, frontispiece a black-and-white etching of Sigmund Freud by Jim Dine, title page in red and black with illustration of a wolf's head, printed in black and red throughout, six woodcuts and five etchings by Jim Dine (in … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bronte, Emily; Balthus (Illustrator and Afterword)
New York: The Limited Editions Club, [1993]. Balthus. Limited Edition. No. 177 of 300, folio size, 208 pp., signed by Balthus, with LEC Monthly Letter. "What could they have in common--Count Balthazar Klossowski de Rola and Mistress Emily Bronte--the Paris-born modern artist who has filled scores of canvases with paintings of pubescent female nudes, and the mid-nineteenth-century British spinster who seems never to have left the Yorkshire moors. But that was precisely the incredible connection. For in his youth the Count--better known as Balthus--had visited and been enchanted by those Yorkshire moors. And haunted by that wild landscape, at the age of 25 he made a series of drawings based on Emily Bronte's gripping novel. The drawings, whose incisive linear quality has been described by Jean Leymarie, Balthus' biographer and critic, as 'lit up with something of the book's flame and storm-flashes, have a place apart in his work and have provided the inspiration for several of his paintings'. . . Published in 1847, "Wuthering Heights" was the only novel written by Emily Bronte, who lived from 1818 to 1848. The adjective "wuthering", in Yorkshire dialect, refers to the turbulent weather, and of course to the turbulent atmosphere that permeates the book" (n. b., from LEC Newsletter). There could be no better way to read "Wuthering Heights" than this: the type, binding, and illustrations are all chosen with loving care, coming together in simple, balanced harmony. ___DESCRIPTION: Original binding by John von Isakovics at Jovonis Studio, full grey-green goatskin with title stamp … [Click Below for Full Description]

Teaching with Calvin and Hobbes Bill Watterson 1993 1st Edition! Teaching with Calvin and Hobbes Written by Bill Watterson Published by: Playground Publishing Printed in: 1993 Pages: 188 Comics by : Bill Watterson Condition This book is in Good condition. There is a name written on the edges of the book. There are no bookplates or markings of any other kind. The pages are free of any foxing. A rare copy of what is perhaps the most difficult piece of official Calvin and Hobbes memorabilia to find. Synopsis Teaching with Calvin and Hobbes is an American children's textbook published in 1993. As a rare piece of officially licensed Calvin and Hobbes merchandise, it is a highly valued collectible. Written by a speech-language pathologist and a learning disabilities educator, Teaching with Calvin and Hobbes is a language textbook for elementary and intermediate-level students. Jan Roebken created the cover and additional interior illustrations. The book reprints fifty-seven Calvin and Hobbes comic strips, organized into five lesson units. Each unit begins with a series of comic strips that form a story. Owing to Bill Watterson's principled refusal to license his comic strip for merchandise in general, Teaching with Calvin and Hobbes is an exceptional item; a license was granted to the authors after they personally communicated to Watterson the success they had using his comic strip to teach children with learning disabilities. ---------- About the Author/Illustrator---------- William Boyd "Bill" Watterson II (1958) is an American cartoonist and the author of the comic strip Calvi … [Click Below for Full Description]

JOHNSON, Jimmy, Katie Goldman and Brian Coley (editors
Watertown, MA: Forced Exposure, 1993. First Editions. Stapled quartos. Forced Exposure was an independent music magazine founded by Jimmy Johnson and Katie "The Kleening Lady" Goldman. It was printed on cheap newsprint with plain design and filled with corrosive, humorous writing. While there were articles and reviews of various counterculture figures in literature (Charles Bukowski, William S. Burroughs, Philip K. Dick) and film (Richard Kern, Nick Zedd), the primary focus was independent, punk, and obscure music. The list of contributors and interviewees reads like a who's who of underground music from the time: Steve Albini, Mission of Burma, Sonic Youth, Lydia Lunch, etc. The last issue of the magazine, #18, was released in 1993. The first three issues are stapled newsprint zines, saddle stitched; wrap around covers were used from issue number 4 on and full color, saddle stitched, wrap around covers on superior paper stock were used from issue 6 until the end of the run with number 18 - the final 146-page issue being perfect bound, all near fine.

Echols, Damien
(Varner, Arkansas): None, Nd. Original holograph manuscript. ["Midnight and Leather" title page + TOC], 1-29, ["Monstrous Fabrications" title page], 30, 31, 31(again)-40pp. Blue plastic ringbound notebook with handwritten 8.5" x 11" sheets inserted back-to-back in clear sheets, white sticker lettered cover. Fine. A holograph manuscript of poems by purported West Memphis Three ringleader Damien Echols, once on death row for the grisly murder of three boys in West Memphis, Arkansas in 1993. He was released in 2011 following new DNA evidence and years of publicity for his innocence including a series of popular documentaries (Paradise Lost), numerous books, songs, and a compilation album in 2000, Free the West Memphis 3. While the West Memphis Three have long been a cause celebre and their trial often cited as an example of a modern witch-hunt, their culpability is still debated to this day. The gothic, macabre voice of Echols' poems is unlikely to win-over his accusers. For instance, with his neat, spindly penmanship he writes the succinct poem "Pine Box": "In the old days / they placed coins / over the eyes / of the dead. / It was said / to prevent them / from looking around / for someone / to take their place." Other poem titles include "Bone Orchard," "Grimoire," "Swine," "The Hate that Jack Built," and "Bedlam's Marionette." They appear to have all been written while Echols was imprisoned; references to injustice, hypocrisy, impotence, and all-powerful shadowy forces abound. Bookmarks from Arkansas booksellers Bk Barn laid in at rear; recently they purchased the entire co … [Click Below for Full Description]
