        Ordinary Cats

(London: Red Hen Press, 1992). Five folio sheets, plus a 4ff. quarto booklet. From an edition of seventy, this is one of twelve deluxe copies with an extra booklet containing a poem by Shirley Jones, aphorisms about cats selected by Jones, and a lovely miniature oval mezzotint of a curled-up sleeping cat. This is copy number one and has a personal inscription to friends of the artist. Each of the large mezzotints is numbered, titled, dated, and signed in pencil by the artist. Included in the set is a handwritten letter by Jones, on Red Hen Press letterhead paper, to the book's recipients. The five plates measure 15 by 12 inches and feature whimsical portraits of cats set against rich velvet-textured ebony backgrounds. The artist hand-set and printed the text in dark blue-green 24-point Baskerville italic type, on pale cream-colored uncut Rives mould-made paper. Housed in a light turquoise cloth drop-back box, which harmonizes with the type color. Jones, who specializes in mezzotint -- the most complex and time-consuming printmaking process -- has created a stunning set of prints. A beautiful, affectionate, and highly personal example of artistry, literature, and presentation by one Wales's leading book artists. Prospectus laid-in. Extremely fine.

        Parking lots

Mt. Horeb, WI: Perishable Press, 1992. 8vo (23.6 cm, 9.25"). [24] pp.; illus. First edition: the Perishable Press's 118th publication. This was the press's first attempt at "a combination-accordion double-pamphlet binding," according to the colophon — which describes the Sabon Antiqua type as "veteran" and closes with this poetic thought on that subject: "the reader can imagine the printer reading this text with his fingers, wondering all the other words made by these twenty-six lead soldiers." The poem (set in the Philadelphia area, and connected to San Diego) is illustrated by Laura Dronzek with two interesting takes on the human/motor transport motif, and signed by the author at the close. This is numbered copy 37 of 130 printed; the laid-in invoice is printed on the back of a map portion and includes a mock parking garage ticket reading "118/ 0037 place on car. Publisher's printed paper wrappers folded (as issued) into portions of Philadelphia and California maps, with paper slip protecting folds. A crisp, clean copy of this striking example of Hamady's dedication to integration of content and form, and to artistic expression.

The Seven Deadly Sins of the Lower Middle Class translated by Michael Feingold from the original text by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill. Etchings and Lithographs by Mark Beard

New York: Vincent FitzGerald & Company. 1992. Limited to 50 copies only, all on Rives paper, each signed by the artist, Mark Beard, and translator, Michael Feingold, over 100 hand-collaged and water-colored images of etchings and lithographs, with each of the seven sins a separate gate fold. Printed letterpress in Garamond in at least 14 different colors by Dan Keleher at Wild Carrot Letterpress. Calligraphy by Jerry Kelly. Page size: 12-1/2 x 21 inches. Bound by Zahra Partovi in association with BookLab: cloth over boards, 3/4 leather spine, protective box with game board map of America. Vincent FitzGerald&#39;s publication of THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS OF THE LOWER MIDDLE CLASS takes the form of a game - complete with game board - using what Weill had dealt with in the ballet: the iconography of America. Mark Beard&#39;s neo-classic imagery is a perfect foil for Weill&#39;s take of two sisters struggling to build their family a home on the banks of the Mississippi in Louisiana. The "seven deadly sins" are personified each on a gatefold page, using more than 100 prints to embellish the tale. The map of the United States is on paper by Dieu Donne with pigment embedded into the paper with the seven cities of sin silkscreened after an original watercolor by Beard. The reader / viewer must be involved in the book with the gameboard and detachable magnetized print elements that reveal themselves - to be removed and placed on the board - as the pages are turned. & THE SEVEN DEADLY ISNS OF THE LOWER MIDDLE CLASS was commissioned in 1933 by Tilly Losch, a famous Viennese dancer married to the wealthy English aristocrat Edward James (associated with the Surrealists). Losch and Edwards were good friends of Lotte Lenya and Kurt Weill who were in Paris in 1933 and close to broke. This commission was a way to give some money to Weill/Lenya and serve as a vehicle for Tilly Losch and her good friend, Lotte. Weill brought in Brecht to write the libretto, and it was produced in June of 1933 as part of the review, "Les Ballets," choreography by George Balanchine and starring Losch and Lenya. Auden and Kallman translated it in the late 1950&#39;s, but Lotte Lenya was never happy with the translation and asked Michael Feingold to translate the piece in 1981 for performance by the American Repertory Theater at Harvard. <br>See an <A HREF= http://www.bookrouter.com/im/juvelisbks/7891.jpg >Image.</A><br>

THREE LIONS AND THE CROSS OF LORRAINE, BARTHOLOMAEUS ANGLICUS, JOHN OF TREVISA, JOHN TATE, WYNKYN DE WORDE, AND DE PROPRIETATIBUS RERUM

Newtown, PA: Bird & Bull Press. 1992. tall 4to., quarter leather, paper over boards. 40, (22) pages.. Limited to 138 numbered copies, this work was printed at the Bird & Bull Press by Henry Morris using Van Dijck types by M&H Type on Frankfurt mouldmade paper. Three Lions and the Cross of Lorraine, Bartholomaeus Anglicus, John of Trevisa, John Tate, Wynkyn De Worde, and De Proprietatibus Rerum contains four essays written for this volume, 19 facsimiles of the woodcuts from DE PROPRIETATIBUS RERUM, and an actual leaf, inserted in a mylar folder, taken from a defective copy of DE PRORIETATIBUS RERUM (circa 1495 and printed by Wynkyn de Worde). This book was the first English book printed on paper made in England and the use of Tate&#39;s paper is proudly cited in the epiloque of the actual book. After Tate&#39;s death in 1507, three failed attempts to make paper in England happened during the 16th century but English papermaking was not established until John Spilman&#39;s successful mill in 1585. Hills has written about John Tate and his papermill. Such a leaf is rare, for it is highly unlikely another incomplete copy of Bartholomaeus will be on the market again. Henry Morris in his foreword says about this book, "I knew it would probably be the most important work I could ever hope to produce in the field of papermaking history." Loosely inserted is a printed note from the publisher commenting on the small limitation.

VISIONAIRE NO. 7: BLACK (FALL 1992)

(VISIONAIRE). Gan, Stephen, James Kaliardos & Cecilia Dean, Editors. VISIONAIRE NO. 7: BLACK (FALL 1992). New York: Visionaire Publishing, 1992. First Edition 1/1500. 4to. Loose Plates in a Portfolio. Fashion Quarterly. Very Good./No Jacket - As Issued. Individual illustrated sheets laid into a silkscreened, die cut portfolio, profusely illustrated in monochrome. Designed by Mats Gustafson and Stephen Gan. Published in an edition of one thousand, five hundred copies, this is the seventh installment of everyone&#39;s favorite long-running luxe fashion quarterly, Visionaire. "With "Black", Visionaire doubled in size-and also in price. The issue was inspired by the season&#39;s all-black Comme des Garcons collection, Edward Gorey&#39;s macabre cartoons, and by artist Antoni Tapies. It was about darkness, the night, shadows, and what you may or may not see when you squint your eyes. A traditional artist&#39;s portfolio case tied with three black ribbons, provided the concept for the packaging. The die-cut letters were based on tears Stephen had made with scrap paper that enabled, once again, different first pages to peek through the cover". The contributors to this noir-ish issue are editor Stephen Gan, Edward Gorey, Ruben Toledo, Bill Cunningham, Elaine Gan, Juan Botas, Bruce Weber, Mats Gustafson, Mario Testino, Francois Berthoud, Karen Park, Gregory Foley, Bernard Figueroa, David McDonough, Mika Mizutani, Max Vadukl, Satoshi Sakusa, Peter Lindbergh, Ross Bleckner, Michel Haddi, Enrique Badulescu, Andrew Brucker, Philippe Salomon, Noelle Hoeppe, James Dignan, Michael Capotosto, Michael Stratton, and John Callahan; with a unique hand-assembled photo collage by Kristina Colovic. A most handsome individually numbered example (#336/1500) of this uncommon issue showing a few light scuffs to the surface of the rear cover. It has been priced accordingly. Visionaire&#39;s own price for this out-of-print back issue is $2,500.00 - when available.         The Warrior Ant. Etchings by Susan Weil.

Vincent FitzGerald & Company, New York 1992 - Artist's book, one of 40 copies only, all on handmade paper by Paul Wong of Dieu Donne Papermill, each copy signed by the artist, Susan Weil, and author, Lee Breuer. Page size: 10 x 10 inches. Bound: handmade paper wrappers in custom box by BookLab, fine. The etchings were editioned by Marjorie Van Dyke and Vincent FitzGerald at The Printmaking Workshop and the text printed letterpress in Bembo by Dan Keleher at Wild Carrot Letterpress. The calligraphy is by Jerry Kelly. Lee Breuer, one of the pre-eminent figures in contemporary theater, was a former chair of the Directing Department at Yale University's School of Drama. He was commissioned by the Next Wave Festival of the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) to write the libretto for an opera by composer Bob Telson, to be staged as part of the innovative productions of this theatre arts festival in 1983. The opera THE WARRIOR ANT has been recorded by Gramavision titled AN ANT ALONE. This is dramatist Lee Breuer's second collaboration with composer, Bob Telson; the first was a staging of Robert Fitzgerald's version of Sophocles' second Theban play, THE GOSPEL AT COLONUS which was also staged at the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Next Wave Festival. Breuer is the founder of Mabou Mines, an experimental theater group, which has mounted Breuer productions of DOLL'S HOUSE, RED BEADS, and PETER AND WENDY, among others. Breuer has been awarded OBIE's for "Best Play, "Best Production," "Directing," "Lifelong Achievement" as well as grants from CAPS, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rockefeller Foundation, Guggenheim Foundation, as well as Fulbright and MacArthur Fellowships. Susan Weil, an American artist who studied with Josef Albers at the famous Black Mountain College and later in NY at the Art Student's League, was active in experimental artistic developments and was closely associated with such artists as Rauschenberg, Johns, Merce Cunningham, and John Cage. Together with her first husband, Robert Rauschenberg, she published "Blueprints," a series of works which contained figurative and abstract elements drawn from realms of dance, performance, and ready- mades, all of which influenced her future artistic evolution. Her juxtaposition of figurative and abstract elements, her creative use of collage, as well as the pictorial qualities of the various materials she uses for their sculptural potential are highlights of her work. All these elements are present in THE WARRIOR ANT, an intriguing continuum of text and images where the viewer wishes to move forward and yet backward sampling fresh pleasures from the pages each time they are viewed. Once again, Vincent FitzGerald has integrated an avant-garde collaboration in the performing arts with the book arts, rewarding the reader / viewer with text, images, and concepts that challenge and intrigue. See an Image. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
