The Old Man and the Sea

The Limited Editions Club, New York 1990 - Number 351 of 600 copies, oblong folio size, [82] pp., signed by Alfred Eisenstaedt, with prospectus. "One of the true classics of our time, "The Old Man and the Sea" was awarded the 1953 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and proved a decisive factor in winning the author Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) the 1954 Nobel Prize for Literature. Alfred Eisenstaedt's (1898-1995) gravures, printed from the original negatives, were taken on a trip to Cuba in 1952. He is best known for his work with "Life" magazine, which is what brought him in Cuba in 1952, where he took the photograph for the cover of the issue containing the first publication of "The Old Man and the Sea." The typeface for this edition was one of three designed by Jan van Krimpen (1892-1958) of Haarlem in the Netherlands, and printed at Typostudio Schumacher-Gebler in Munich. The book was designed by Benjamin Shiff, and the gravure plates were prepared by Jon Goodman. Sara Krohn, Wingate Studio, and Robert Townsend printed the gravures, and John von Isakovics hand-bound the completed pages. The Mutiny on The Bounty (28th April 1789) is one of the most famous of naval events from the eighteenth century. Made into numerous movies and the content of any number of books. The Bounty was on a mission to gather Bread Fruit Trees in Tahiti in the South Pacific and transport them to the slave colonies in the West Indies as a food source. The expedition was promoted by the Royal Society, and the Bounty was fitted out to their specification, essentially as a large greenhouse. This resulted in harsh and cramped conditions for all on board, which in due course, once laden, had the consequence of creating tensions, and in turn the dispute between the ship's captain, William Bligh and his crew culminated in a mutiny led by Fletcher Christian. Forcing Bligh and a number of crew off the ship and into a launch, Christian, with a crew of mutineers took control of the Bounty and sailed it away, eventually landing on Pitcairn Island. Meanwhile Bligh and his small loyal group had made a safe escape over 3500 miles of open sea, itself an amazing feat of navigation and endurance. The events that took Christian around the south pacific to settle with a number of other sailors on Pitcairn, and Bligh's post-mutiny voyage are the core of this collection and the extensive research here casts much light on their ancestry in England and their descendents on Pitcairn, and puts the historical events into a new context, focusing so much on the individual real lives, stripped of the Hollywood gloss and spin, and illustrating the real characters in their correct historical context.

600 gr.         The Earthsea Quartet.] A Wizard of Earthsea; The Tombs of Atuan; The Farthest Shore; Tehanu.

Berkeley, CA / New York: Parnassus Press / Atheneum, 1968, 1971, 1972, 1990 - Four works, octavo. Original cloth, with the dust jackets. A very good set, Earthsea with an ink gift inscription, and the jacket price-clipped and slightly chipped at the ends and corners, Atuan with residual tape marks to jacket and light rubbing to extremities, Farthest Shore with some light spotting and the price-clipped jacket creased and somewhat torn along the top and bottom edge, tape repair to top edge, Tehanu near fine with sticker over price on jacket front flap. A Wizard of Earthsea with illustrations by Ruth Robbins; Tombs of Atuan and Farthest Shore with illustrations by Gail Garraty. First editions of the "Earthsea Quartet", each copy signed or inscribed by the author. The latter three titles are first printings, the Wizard of Earthsea one of 16,200 copies from the Parnassus second or third printing, without the faint vertical smudge to the title page of all 6,800 first printing copies, most of which went to libraries). Atuan first state with the silver stamped covers and "Reinforced Binding $5.50" jacket without Newberry Award stamp, and inscribed "For David - Ursula le Guin" on the title page, also with copyright slip laid down to title page verso (second state for book, first for jacket, no priority); Farthest Shore with "Reinforced Binding" to jacket; Tehanu inscribed "for Denise with all good wishes Ursula Le Guin" and with sticker over the price to jacket front flap. All first edition copies of this fantasy classic are very scarce signed or inscribed. Though there are a few later and earlier iterations of the Earthsea saga, Tehanu was published with the subtitle "The Last Book of Earthsea", and these four full-length novels are generally grouped together (and were later published together) as the "Earthsea Quartet".         [Photo Album]: African-American Family Album Compiled as a 70th Wedding Anniversary Present

New York, 1990. Near Fine. Quarto. Modern 2" thick three-ring green binder. A collection of 275 sepia toned, black and white, or color photographs measuring between 1.5" x 1" to 3.5" x 5.5" with occasional captions. A fine album with very good or better photographs with creasing and edgewear on some.A photo album assembled for the 70th wedding anniversary of Grace and Clifford Knight, an African-American couple from High Falls, New York. The album spans, in no particular order, the entirety of their relationship up until they celebrated their 70th Anniversary in 1990. It also includes photographs from their youth, showing both Grace and Clifford as children. The photos depict the couple and their friends and family on trips, celebrating holidays, and on the beach. One photo shows a woman, presumably Grace, in a graduation cap and gown. There are numerous photos of people posing outside in nice outfits, going to church, and standing by new cars in the 1940s. The couple is seen posing together from the 1920s until 1990, dancing, attending events, and growing old together. Additionally taped to the inside of the album is a letter on White House stationary congratulating the Knight's on their anniversary and (almost certainly secretarially) signed by then President George Bush, Sr.An extensive family album depicting over 70 years of an African American couple's relationship.
