The Mutiny on The Bounty (28th April 1789) is one of the most famous of naval events from the eighteenth century. Made into numerous movies and the content of any number of books. The Bounty was on a mission to gather Bread Fruit Trees in Tahiti in the South Pacific and transport them to the slave colonies in the West Indies as a food source. The expedition was promoted by the Royal Society, and the Bounty was fitted out to their specification, essentially as a large greenhouse. This resulted in harsh and cramped conditions for all on board, which in due course, once laden, had the consequence of creating tensions, and in turn the dispute between the ship's captain, William Bligh and his crew culminated in a mutiny led by Fletcher Christian. Forcing Bligh and a number of crew off the ship and into a launch, Christian, with a crew of mutineers took control of the Bounty and sailed it away, eventually landing on Pitcairn Island. Meanwhile Bligh and his small loyal group had made a safe escape over 3500 miles of open sea, itself an amazing feat of navigation and endurance. The events that took Christian around the south pacific to settle with a number of other sailors on Pitcairn, and Bligh's post-mutiny voyage are the core of this collection and the extensive research here casts much light on their ancestry in England and their descendents on Pitcairn, and puts the historical events into a new context, focusing so much on the individual real lives, stripped of the Hollywood gloss and spin, and illustrating the real characters in their correct historical context.

600 gr.         [Photo Album]: African-American Family Album Compiled as a 70th Wedding Anniversary Present

New York, 1990. Near Fine. Quarto. Modern 2" thick three-ring green binder. A collection of 275 sepia toned, black and white, or color photographs measuring between 1.5" x 1" to 3.5" x 5.5" with occasional captions. A fine album with very good or better photographs with creasing and edgewear on some.A photo album assembled for the 70th wedding anniversary of Grace and Clifford Knight, an African-American couple from High Falls, New York. The album spans, in no particular order, the entirety of their relationship up until they celebrated their 70th Anniversary in 1990. It also includes photographs from their youth, showing both Grace and Clifford as children. The photos depict the couple and their friends and family on trips, celebrating holidays, and on the beach. One photo shows a woman, presumably Grace, in a graduation cap and gown. There are numerous photos of people posing outside in nice outfits, going to church, and standing by new cars in the 1940s. The couple is seen posing together from the 1920s until 1990, dancing, attending events, and growing old together. Additionally taped to the inside of the album is a letter on White House stationary congratulating the Knight's on their anniversary and (almost certainly secretarially) signed by then President George Bush, Sr.An extensive family album depicting over 70 years of an African American couple's relationship.

        Four Past Midnight

(New York): Viking, (1990). First Edition. Hardcover Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. 763 pages. A collection of four novellas. The first, The Langoliers, became the basis of a TV miniseries. The book won the Bram Stoker award for best collection in 1990. First edition (first printing). Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Bumping to top of spine. An astounding copy, with a full-page inscription. For contrast, copies of books inscribed to King's first agent and early editors rarely went beyond a few lines. This inscription reads, 'For Steve, Deborah, and the Gould Juniors...: Hope you enjoy this as much as I enjoyed the piece on Williams hitting .406. The review was also good, but I could feel you wanting to let loose on that prissy S.O.B. George Will. You should have done it! See you soon, I hope--it certainly looks like there's a lot more baseball ahead for us this year. Hooray! Tabby & Owen send their best, and so do I. Stephen King. 9/5/90.' Almost certainly this was one of King's contributor copies, which he signed and sent to Gould (the book was published on September 3, 1990). As best your humble cataloguer can tell, the reference to George Will is to his book, Men at Work: The Craft of Baseball, which Gould reviewed in the Oct. 11, 1990 issue of The New York Review of Books, which means that Gould sent King a copy of the review in advance of its publication. The reference to Williams is to Gould's essay, 'Achieving the Impossible Dream: Ted Williams and .406.' Gould and King were friends and baseball fans--a relationship that appeared in their books (see the acknowledgements of King's The Tommyknockers and Gould's Wonderful Life). It's hard to imagine a better copy of this book.

Bitte beachten!! Eine Auslieferung ist derzeit erst ab 29.01.2018 möglich!!
