Dragon Lady: The History of the U-2 Spyplane

Shrewsbury, England: Airlife Publishing, 1989. 1st. First Edition. SIGNED by the author and INSCRIBED by several pilots in the U-2 program including Lt. Col. Richard S. Heyser, Maj. Gen. Patrick J. Halloran, Colonel Des Portes, Colonel Jack Nole, and Captain Tony Bevacqua. 8vo. 214 pp. Photo-illustrations. Bibliography; Index. Black cloth in color printed dustjacket. A fine copy, as new; a nice copy with unique associations. Richard S. Heyser, lieutenant colonel, USAF, one of the most experience U-2 pilots flew whose photographs revealed Soviet medium-range ballistic missiles in Cuba, precipitating the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962. In the late 1950s into the 1960s, he flew Lockheed U-2s with the 4080th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing, Maj. Gen. Patrick J. Halloran was deputy director for strategic command, control and communications systems, Command, Control and Communications Systems Directorate, Joint Staff, Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Washington, D.C. During his years with the U-2 program, General Halloran flew missions from nearly a dozen forward operating locations overseas and accumulated more than 1,600 flying hours in the high-flying reconnaissance aircraft. Halloran flew U2 missions over Cuba during the Cuban Crisis and over Vietnam in both the U-2 and the SR-71. Outside of Korean War combat, Pat recalls his most dangerous missions were in the U-2 because of the critical nature of flight in a single engine plane at altitudes 70,000+ feet Colonel Des Portes, wing commander for the 4080th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing, which consisted of one U-2 squadron with about 25 pilots. During the Cuban missle crisis, Des Portes had to simulatneously manage the missing U-2 spyplane over the Soviet Union for one and one-quarter hours and the shootdown of a U-2 over Cuba. Colonel Jack Nole commander of the 4028th Strategic Recon Squadron, had the distinction of landing the first U-2 aircraft at Laughlin AFB. He also earned the distinction of the first military pilot to safely bail out of a U-2. He recorded the highest altitude parachute escape to date on that ejection. Captain Tony Bevacqua is thought to be the youngest pilot to check out in the U-2; he was only 24 when he first flew it at The Ranch in 1957.

William Morris: master-printer. A lecture given on the evening of November 27, 1896 to students of the printing school, St. Bride Foundation Institution in London

Yellow Barn Press, Council Bluffs, IA 1989 - Edition limited to 155 copies, this being a binder's proof copy, unnumbered (see below); 8vo, pp. [4], x, [2], 34, [6]; portrait frontispiece and 2 plates engraved by John de Pol; original beige buckram, printed paper labels on spine and upper cover; fine. Laid in is a 2-page autograph letter signed from the binder, Greg Campbell, Campbell-Logan Bindery, to the printer Neil Shaver, describing various binding issues with this first proof, and with 2 drawings of the binding. A note in pencil on the half-title page, likely by Shaver, indicates that some of the pages included are "rejects." This copy seems otherwise identical to the letterpress copies of the edition. The lecture from which this book draws its text was one of "the most balanced, nonpartisian appraisals of Morris as a printer." and earlier copies of it quickly became quite scarce. There were two other issues printed, one in an edition of 200, and anotherof 1400. The Yellow Barn Press: a history and bibliography, A16. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        All the King's Men

The Limited Editions Club, New York 1989 - Number 351 of 600 copies, quarto size, [588] pp., signed by Robert Penn Warren and Hank O'Neal, with prospectus. "A triple-threat writer, Robert Penn Warren (1905-1989) was preeminent as poet, critic, and novelist. He was also a triple winner of Pulitzer Prizes, and America's first Poet Laureate. "All the King's Men" is ostensibly the story of the rise of Willie Stark, a man of the people, from the farm to the study of law and into politics, and from his success as a demagogic governor to assassination. Yet the real issue, as we soon come to understand, is the character of the narrator, Jack Burden, a caustic-tongued, brilliant journalist, whose self-examination becomes a symbol of the era. The story's meaning continues to resonate just as strongly with modern readers as it did for readers seventy years ago, because the novel's central theme is power: its distribution at all levels of government, its ethics a, and its consequences. Hank O'Neal's photographs are the visual equivalents of Warren's words. The creation of photographic illustrations that directly relate to a great literary artist's imagination of over seventy years ago is immensely challenging, and these gravures of O'Neal's photographs met the challenge admirably. The type was set at Out of Sorts Letterfoundry, and printed at Heritage Printers on paper made especially for this edition in Pescia, Italy. The ten gravure plates were prepared by Jon Goodman and printed by four shops: Clary Nelson, Renaissance Press; Sam Pettengill, Peter Pettengill, Wendy Sawyer and Sonja Olson, Wingate Studio; Sara Krohn and Donna Schulman, all on Arches paper. This edition was bound by Karl Folkes at Spectrum Bindery, and the whole designed by Benjamin Shiff.___DESCRIPTION: Both volumes quarter bound in black Nigerian Oasis goatskin and linen covered boards, backstrip lettered in 22-karat gold, housed in a slipcase covered with Black Italian Cotton and lined with ultrasuede, fore-edge uncut, ten photogravures; English Monotype Baskerville type, Cartiere Enrico Magnani paper, quarto size (11 5/8" by 9 1/4"), [i-vi] vii-xi [1 dedication] [1-2] 3-587 [588] [1 colophon] pp., limited edition, this number 351 of 600 copies, signed by the author and artist, with the "Limited Editions Club Letter" newsletter/prospectus.___CONDITION: A fine copy; clean, crisp, as new in a near fine case (case has a slight dent to one edge). The only condition issues we see are two leaves (pp. 273-276) in the second volume, due to the uncut edges extending further out than the rest of the text block, have very small closed tears to the fore-edge margin, and the leather on the spine of the second volume is slightly sunner; overall fine, a handsome production of a literary icon.___CITATION: Per The Limited Editions Club Letter No. 556, Series 49, Vols. 5 & 6, March 1990.___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         Eau de Cologne. Nr. 1 - 1985: Cindy Sherman / Nr. 2 - 1987: Are we having fun yet? / Nr. 3: Art Cologne 1979. Herausgeber Monika Sprüth / Jutta Koether, Karen Marta.

Köln. Monika Sprüth Galerie. 1985 - 1989. - 1. Auflage. 3 Hefte. 40 x 26 cm / 30 x 25 cm. 76; 83; 108 S. OBroschur. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
