        Edwardian Tennis Match: Mixed Doubles

Italy: circa 1990. Oil on copper. 8 x 15 1/2 inches. 22k gold leaf frame with brown crackle panel. 10 1/2 x 18 inches. Marco Ceri lives in Northern Italy where he paints in oil on copper pictures in a very specific genre all his own. They are paintings of English people engaged at polo, golf or tennis during the Edwardian era. A great deal of research provided a high degree of accuracy to every aspect of these scenes including, of course, the attire and sports equipment, but even the postures and demeanors of the participants. The accuracy of the elements however does not intrude on the overall delight expressed in these tableaux. The artist keeps a low profile, enjoying his virtual anonymity. He considers himself a craftsman, who by limiting his sphere of activity, brings that craft closer and closer to perfection.

[FINAL TYPESCRIPT FOR HIS NOVEL "BALOOK"]

np np: np, 1990. First Edition. Very Good +. 8.5" x 11" typescript (computer word-processor-generated, almost certainly daisy wheel) on perforated printer paper. Minor creasing to some pages. A bit of toning overall. Remnants of a smoky smell (both Anthony and his wife were smokers). Two small corrections to the text, presumably by Anthony, else clean throughout. Very good plus to near fine. [2], 237, [1]. The complete typescript and author's note for Anthony's 1990 young-adult sci-fi novel BALOOK, the publisher's copy sent by Anthony to his publisher Underwood-Miller who brought the novel out in 1990. Published the same year as Michael Crichton's JURASSIC PARK, Anthony's story also revolves around the genetic resurrection of an extinct dinosaur. A coming-of-age story of sorts comparing the maturation of the Baluchitherium "Balook" with that of his young friend Thor. Perhaps most noteworthy, however, for Anthony's "Author's Note" which closes the book (as well as the manuscript here). It recounts BALOOK's long and circuitous road to publication and remains one of Anthony most concentrated and sustained pieces on the science fiction genre, his working methods, and the writer's craft. It ends, appropriately enough, thusly: "I mentioned word processing programs. I had discovered one called Finalword that promised to be even better for me than my prior ones [...] But it was complex, and not perfectly adapted to me system or my Dvorak keyboard; it would be a monster to break in. So I decided to use [...] a short novel to break it in; once I have novelized a thing, I really understand it [...] The available novel was Balook." In other words, THIS typescript.

Les Nourritures Terrestres, Lithographies originales de Pierre Boncompain

Paris: Editions Michele Trinckvel. NF. 1990. 1st thus. Boxed. Yellow cloth covered solander box with title and vignette of a woman blocked on upper board and titles on spine, a couple of small marks to cloth, box contains sheets in original wrapper, illustrated by Pierre Boncompain with ten colour lithos and twenty b&w lithos with an additional twenty-six litho. illustrations to text, No.236 of an edition of 300 signed by the author on the colophon. , Andre Gide (1869-1951) was a French author and winner of the 1947 Nobel Prize for Literature. Gide's childhood was spent in the relative isolation of Normandy and he grew up in a family with a religious and puritanical world view. It was the conflict between the strict moralism of his upbringing and his own nature that would power Gide's writing and his work, both the autobiographical work and the fiction, explores his own battle between self realisation and the moral constraints instilled in him as a child. This work (the title translates as 'Fruits of the Earth') deals very directly with this conflict. Gide would acknowledge the influence of Nietzsche's Also Sprach Zarathustra on this book which was written in 1895 but the real roots of the book lie in Gide's travels in North Africa in 1893-94 where he came to accept his own attraction to boys. When published in 1897 the book, with its theme of abandoning rules and stability in favour of adventure and excess was not well received, however after the First World War it gained a considerable following, influencing a generation of young writers. Gide was a prolific writer, writing both fiction and non-fiction until his death in 1951. In 1952 the Catholic Church placed all his works in the Index Librorum Prohibitorum, and if Gide's work can be seen as an investigation of freedom and empowerment in the face of moralistic and puritanical authority then this seems almost to be a compliment., Folio 13" - 23" tall, 209 [5] pp .

Poems of W.B. Yeats. Selected and introduced by Helen Vendler & with six etchings by Richard Diebenkorn

San Francisco: Arion Press, 1990. Quarto. (10 1/4 x 8 inches). Printed in red and black, half-title. 6 etched plates by Richard Diebenkorn, the original 8pp. illustrated prospectus (10 1/4 x 8 inches) loosely inserted, together with the small format order-form (7 x 5 inches). Original red morocco-backed green cloth-covered boards, spine lettered in gilt, green cloth and red paper-covered slipcase, paper title-label on 'spine' of slip- case. A mint copy of this beautifully-illustrated selection of Yeats poems, from one of America's most important contemporary private presses: the edition is limited to 426 copies, this copy number 284 of 400 copies for sale and signed by the artist. 'Shortly before his death, Yeats wrote in a letter, "Man can embody truth but he cannot know it." His conviction that art is embodiment can be read through the images of vestures recurring throughout the poetry - as garments of art, the singing-clothes of the bard, the mantle of poetry. The Yeatsian theme of an empty coat was taken up by the artist Richard Diebenkorn for a series of five out of the six prints in the book. The other etching, the first in the book, is a double-map of Ireland, representing ... the divided, embattled country ... Then come, interspersed at regular intervals throughout the book, the sequence of five etchings on the coat.' (Prospectus). The artist's use of the coat theme not only resonates with Yeats' imagery but also with two works by the artists himself: the one executed in 1943 (of his U.S. Marine Corps uniform), the other a small 1989 painting recalling his famous 'Ocean Park' series. The etchings therefore also "recapitulate Diebenkorn's career, in variations on a common piece of apparel, from 1943 to [1990]" (Prospectus). This was the 31st book published by Andrew Hoyem's Arion Press. The Press remains as a standard bearer for a proud tradition of fine printing in San Francsisco. For much of the middle of the 20th century this tradition was upheld by the Grabhorn Press. From 1966 until his death, Robert Grabhorn (the younger of the two Grabhorn brothers) worked in partnership with Hoyem. Robert Grabhorn brought to the new enterprise much of the printing equipment and type collection of the Grabhorn Press,... Shortly before [his] ... death ... the balance of the Grabhorn equipment was purchased [by Hoyem] from the widow of Edwin Grabhorn, consolidating one of the most important collections of type, which Arion Press uses to this day. In 1974, Andrew Hoyem renamed the company Arion Press (after the legendary Greek poet who was saved from the sea by a dolphin) and started on a new series of limited-edition books that began to be published in 1975. The present work stands as one of the highpoints.

Parables & Pieces translated by Michael Feingold. Illustrated with photogravures after photographs by Judith Turner

Vincent FitzGerald and Company New York: Vincent FitzGerald and Company. 1990. First Edition thus, one of 50 copies, all on BFK Rives paper, all signed by Turner and Feingold. Page size: 11 x 13". Bound: collaged Japanese grey paper over boards, housed in black silk box, fine. Illustrating Kafka's 15 short fictions are 25 photogravures, a delicate process little used since the 19th century. The process, in which original prints are made from a photograph etched by ultraviolet light on an engraved copper plate, is used in an innovative contemporary way to reflect the great Modernist author's distinctive 20th century sensibility, with its inexplicable fears and haunting sense of helpless isolation. Rather than standing aloof from the text, Turner's images enfold it, combat it, or weave their way across it. Gatefold pages, aquatints adding almost subliminal touches of colors, and collages employing a variety of fine papers in various textures and colors, are among the techniques which add to the effect of a visual environment specially created for Kafka's lost souls to inhabit. See an Image.

        ARCHIVE OF LETTERS: 21 pages

1983 - 1990. Letters. Folds from mailing. Near Fine. Superb archive of seven letters from the author of ANGELA'S ASHES to R'Lene Dahlberg, fellow teacher at Stuyvesant High School, friend, wife of author Edward Dahlberg, and muse. Mostly chatty correspondence, all but two pages handwritten by McCourt, complete with hand-addressed envelopes and mostly written in New York City. In one letter McCourt describes being at Rockaway Beach with his daughter Maggie who is searching for her lost hamster with a friend: "The little bugger won't come out. I've tempted him with everything from carrots to watercress. I've made assorted seductive noises. I've exposed mineself. I've even promised him a night out with a hamsteress. To no avail. Maggie & Clare are less interested in hamsters than in boys. It's all boys now. Boys, boys, boys. I'll break her face. She checks herself out in the mirror by the hour. I told her cut it out. She [sic] wearing out the mirror. Also, I'm getting an education in teeny bop mating habits and teeny bop music. Pubescence is a pain in the arse." In the same letter he describes an encounter with "a maiden" who "had her way with me on the pitcher's mound in the local baseball field. She was a Catholic, too, and told me I was much better than a state of grace. You could always regain your state of grace, she said, but the way I was drinking she decided to get me while she could before I became a shadow of my former self. Does this make sense to you? I'll clean it all up in the novel I'm writing called IN THE FLESH." McCourt also discusses the IRA, his divorce from Alberta, his tour with his brother Malachi and the rave reviews they were getting, how much he likes Chicago, teaching, etc. In one letter he gives a list of saints. All letters are SIGNED "Frank," with one SIGNED "Frank, son of Angela." Also included is a handwritten note by R'Lene Dahlberg describing her relationship to McCourt which, by all accounts, seems to have cooled dramatically upon the publication of the Pulitzer Prize winning ANGELA'S ASHES. McCourt admired Edward Dahlberg's superb autobiography BECAUSE I WAS FLESH and modeled his own ANGELA'S ASHES after it, both writers casting their mothers as the central characters. Both emerged from impoverished childhoods to achieve success, though Dahlberg's was critical rather than financial. Dahlberg was dead when ANGELAíS ASHES was published in 1996, but his former wife, R'lene Dahlberg, was alive. She was the first person to encourage McCourt to publish his work and stated in a private note (included here) that she "got him his first publication- called 'If you live in a lane.'" Her importance to McCourt was publicly acknowledged by him in his book where she is listed first on the Acknowledgments page: "This is a small hymn to an exhaltation of women. R'lene Dahlberg fanned the embers." McCourt told friends a funny tale of walking with Edward Dahlberg down Second Avenue. Dahlberg was "pontificating like Jehova" and as they approached the Jewish funeral home where his "sainted" mother had been laid out, Dahlberg stepped in dog excrement. "How can letters flourish in the commonwealth," Dahlberg immediately raved, "when pederasts are permitted to parade their poodles to dung on the pavement!" He removed his soiled shoe and threw it in the city garbage can, continuing home with one shoe on and one shoe gone.

        Edwardian Golf
