        Manuscript and Correspondence Archive

[c. 1990s]. Copies of various pieces of writing by the noted mystery writer (and poet), who is, among many other things, the author of the story, and later the novel, that were the basis for the well-reviewed film Drive. The materials here belonged to Sallis's friend Robert Skinner, of Xavier University Library, himself also the author of a highly praised series of mystery novels. A notable association, made all the more so by the fact that both Sallis and Skinner have written mystery series that feature non-white protagonists -- Sallis an African-American, Lew Griffin; and Skinner a Creole, Wesley Farrell, who has been passing for white -- and they also each have written books on Chester Himes, the expatriate African-American mystery writer whose novels laid the foundation for mystery series featuring black detectives with his books that featured Harlem cops "Coffin" Ed Johnson and "Gravedigger" Jones. Sallis wrote a biography and Skinner edited a book of interviews and compiled a bibliography. The Sallis archive includes: ? the typescript (printout) of "George Pelecanos," which was published as the introduction to the 1999 St. Martin's paperback edition of Pelecanos' The Big Blowdown. With a few minor changes between this version and the published one. 4 pages. ? the typescript (printout) of "Introduction," published in the 1994 Avalon paperback edition of Chester Himes' A Case of Rape. 7 pages. â?¢ the typescript (printout) of "Career Moves." 4 pages. Six vignettes about looking for work. Published in Potato Tree, 2007. â?¢ the typescript (printout) of "Day's Heat." Fiction. 20 pages (plus a blank, numbered 21st page), 4170 words. Published in Sallis' collection A City Equal to My Desire, 2000. â?¢ the typescript (printout) of "Uncles and Fireflies." An essay that pays tribute to his uncle; possibly unpublished. 4 pages. â?¢ the typescripts (printouts) of three poems, one page each: "Dawn in the Country's Still Heart," "Our Drive into the Country's Still Heart," and "Reading the World." â?¢ a typed letter signed to Robert Skinner, dated August 27, 1992. Touches on his own writing and on Skinner's work on Himes's unfinished novel Plan B (which Sallis calls Plan A). With mailing envelope. â?¢ a holiday invitation, 1993, hand-addressed; a signed birthday card, undated, with envelope; an autograph postcard signed, 1995, from New York; a signed holiday card, undated; a signed holiday card, with added sentiment, 1995, with envelope; a signed holiday card, 1997, with envelope. â?¢ a flyer announcing the publication party of Sallis' Black Hornet, a Lew Griffin novel; a flyer for a 1995 Sallis reading, which prints his poem "Art of Biography"; an unused promotional postcard featuring the cover art for Moth, another Lew Griffin novel; photocopy of a promotional flyer from No Exit Press, with mailing envelope; 3 promotional flyers from 1997; a 1999 printout of Iain Sinclair's review of Sallis' Eye of the Cricket, again a Lew Griffin novel, from Waterstones website. â?¢ Approximately 75 pages of printouts of emails from Sallis to Skinner, May 1996 to October 1997 (plus one page from 1999), and one printed email signed, 2000, that Sallis had to mail when it kept being bounced back to him. With envelope. ¶ All items fine. .

Biotherm (for Bill Berkson). [Together with a booklet] Companion to Biotherm (for Bill Berkson).

San Francisco: Arion Press, 1990.. Bill Berkson, essay. 44 loose sheets plus text booklet. Folio. 44 loose sheets in red silk clamshell box; text bound in stitched paper wrappers in pocket of portfolio. First edition. Illus. with 42 lithographs. No. 36 of 150 copies (of a total edition of 180), signed by Dine. "'Biotherm' is the last long poem of Frank O'Hara, whose accidental death in 1966 at age forty deprived America of one of its most vital and innovative poets. The poet and critic Bill Berkson, to whom the poem is addressed, provided an essay and compiled a glossary to explicate the references in the poem and to recount the circumstances of its writing. The artist Jim Dine knew O'Hara and admired his work. Challenged by O'Hara's brilliant experimentation in 'Biotherm', Dine's prints pay a vibrant homage to the poet and engage themes in the poem. Biotherm, a true livre d'artiste, is the sixth collaboration between Jim Dine and Andrew Hoyem" (Arion Press catalogue). A near fine copy, contents fine but for crease on half-title, in a clamshell box with a soil spot on front cover and faint edge wear to corners; booklet is a fine copy.

Final Judgement Construction Company Annual Report & Literary Journal

(n.p.): Well-Defended Press. 1990. A spoof on corporate reports, with contributions by a number of Canadian writers including Kinsella, Ann Knight, Spider Robinson (an award-winning science fiction writer) and others. Kinsella contributes "An excerpt from my essay, Treacherous Snivelling and Other Dangerous Trends in Contemporary U.S. Poetry." Also includes a poem (in Latin, no less) by "Silas Ermineskin," one of the central characters in a number of Kinsella's highly praised Indian stories -- a Kinsella alter-ego. Ermineskin's contribution is signed by "Ermineskin," somewhat illegibly. Also signed by Kinsella, Knight, Robinson and five others, presumably all the contributors, although the use of pseudonyms on the contributions makes it impossible to determine, from internal evidence alone, if this is the case. Folded sheets, with plain card-stock covers: apparently a home-made production of someone with a copier and a laser printer, and the friendship of a number of Canadian literary figures. Although the limitation is not stated, and the production methods did not preclude creation of more copies, we are told that there were only 30 copies of this done. 24 pages, folded sheets in cardstock covers. OCLC locates only one copy, in the Canadian national archives. Fine. . First Edition.

        Four Past Midnight

New York: Viking. NF/NF. 1990. 1st Edition. Hardcover; 1st Printing. 0670835382 . 1st edition/1st printing. First printing with the number line beginning with '1'. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by the author on the front end page: 'For Kris [last name] - With best wishes, Stephen King 8/9/93'. An excellent, authentic example of King's writing and signature. The book is straight, clean, tight, has no previous owner handwriting or soiling, and would be graded fine except that it has a remainder mark on the bottom page edges and very slight rubbing to the gilt of the 'SK' on the lower front cover (no problems with the gilt printing on the spine). The dustjacket is in near fine + condition: price intact, clean, crisp, unfaded, with only one short, completely closed edge tear with no loss of material to the upper front edge, and it is in a removable clear mylar cover to keep it in excellent condition. 'Past midnight, something happens to time--as shown in these 4 tales.' ; Signed by Author .

        Stanzas for an imaginary garden

Tuscaloosa, AL: Parallel Editions, University of Alabama, 1990. 12mo (23 cm; 9"). [14] ff. Paz (1914–98), Mexico's leading poet of the second half of the 20th century and winner of the 1990 Nobel Prize for Literature, "was approached [by the municipal government of Mexico City] with a proposal to build a public garden whose gates and walls would be decorated with his poems. The garden was to be located in Mixcoac where Paz spent most of his childhood and adolescence. Mixcoac, once a charming village of the city, is now a desolate, deafening and polluted, anonymous corner of the spreading megalopolis. Paz designed the verbal plantings for the garden, but after visiting the site, decided it was impossible: Mixcoac had become another world. His poems, then, became stanzas for an imaginary garden, to be built or unbuilt somewhere else" (Introduction). Here his poems are printed by Steve Miller, in an edition of => only 75 copies, using Bembo types on dampened Frankfurt mouldmade paper; they are present in Spanish with Eliot Weinberger's English translation opposite. => John dePol has provided the black and white and colored wood engravings. "The binding design and execution is by Paula Marie Gourley, with assistance from Kimberly Brodie and Robert LeTourneaux" (colophon). This is copy 50, and has been => signed on the half-title by Paz, Weinberger, and DePol. Provenance: From the collection of Gerson Leiber, the artist, engraver, sculptor, and book collector. Binding is a of richly multicolored paste paper over boards. Fine copy.

The edition was limited to 5000 copies (this is number 2535) each signed by a different selection of contributors. This copy is signed by: Billy Al Bengston, Peter Blake, Eric Clapton, Adam Cooper, John Dunbar, Allen Jones, Craig Kaufmann, Ann Marshall, Colin Self, Andy Warhol, and Bill Wyman. Copies signed by Warhol are extremely rare: Warhol died in 1987 as the book was being assembled and only signed a handful of copies (anecdotally, perhaps as few as 20). Guildford UK: Genesis Publications / Hedley, 1990. Quarto, original black morocco and yellow buckram; original handmade silkscreen box with a sliding blind revealing a photograph unique to each copy; original shipping box. A fine copy.         DIE LAMBETH APOKALYPSE

Stuttgart: Müller & Schindler, 1990. No. 23 OF 250 SPECIAL COPIES in the deluxe binding (apparently apart from a smaller version of this same facsimile issued by the same publisher in a run of 550 copies without the recessed enamel cover) . Hardcover. Reproducing Two Magnificent Works of Art,Including a 13th Century Limoges Book Cover. 290 x 210 mm (11 1/2 x 8 1/4"). Text:; Box: 330 x 245 mm. (13 x 9 3/4"). Two volumes (including commentary volume in German). Commentary by Ruth Mettler, Nigel Morgan, and Michelle Brown. No. 23 OF 250 SPECIAL COPIES in the deluxe binding (apparently apart from a smaller version of this same facsimile issued by the same publisher in a run of 550 copies without the recessed enamel cover). The facsimile volume in maroon calf over bevelled boards, a sterling silver facsimile seal of the archbishop of Canterbury attached to the center of the front board, brass clasps and four brass corner guards, double raised bands; the companion volume in matching leather; both in a very sturdy leatherette box lined with cork, the commentary volume in the bottom of the box, a cork divider between it and the facsimile on top of it, another cork divider atop the facsimile, a leatherette lid with a wide handle, and, on top of it all, A STUNNING DETACHABLE REPRODUCTION IN GOLD AND ENAMEL OF A MEDIEVAL BOOK COVER DEPICTING CHRIST IN MAJESTY, the main part of the image within a sunken panel, and the whole attached with gold nails to a wood backing. With full-page frontispiece depiciting a Benedictine scribe being directed by the Virgin Mary and a talkative Christ Child, first page with eight-line historiated initial featuring elaborate extension into lower margin inhabited by a peacock, 78 half-page miniatures of scenes from Revelations illuminated with 23-karat gold, 28 half-page miniatures (two per page) depicting Christian legends, and 14 full-page miniatures of the Virgin Mary, Christ, and various saints. With color prospectus and publisher's certificate of authenticity laid in. A couple of faint scratches to covers of commentary volume, otherwise a virtually mint copy. This is a most remarkable large-format facsimile in that it reproduces two magnificent works of art--the Lambeth Apocalypse and a memorable 13th century Limoges book cover. The Lambeth Apocalypse dates to the 13th century, when Medieval English book illustration was at its peak. The subtle colors (predominantly pink, mint green, blue, and a dull orange), are very well reproduced, and the use of actual gold leaf on many of the images enhances the verisimilitude. The figures are graceful and attenuated, the folds of the garments are crisp, and the monsters and demons are fittingly gruesome. In addition to illustrations of John's mystic revelations, the manuscript includes some striking full-page images, among them the Virgin and Child, the Crucifixion, the risen Christ with Mary Magdalene, the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, and St. Catherine of Alexandria. Currently in the Victoria and Albert Museum, our gold and enamel book covering beautifully recreates a French cover produced in Limoges around the year 1300. Its image depicts Christ in Majesty, much as he was sculpted over church doors of the period, enthroned as king of heaven and surrounded by the four winged creatures, as described in the Apocalypse. The original manuscript was commissioned by Lady Eleanor De Quincy, Countess of Winchester (ca.1230-74), who is probably the woman kneeling at the feet of the Virigin in one of the full-page miniatures. The peacock on the first page of text may indicate that the work was done in a London workshop known to use that signature. The book was later owned by Elizabethan book collector, John, Lord Lumley (1534-1609) before passing into the Royal Library and becoming part of the founding collection of the Archbishop of Canterbury's library at Lambeth Palace. There is a great deal of hand work involved in the text and especially the cover here, and the final achievement represents facsimile production of extraordinary quality.

Salk was an American medical pioneer, a virologist and researcher who discovered and developed the first successful polio vaccine in the mid-1950s -- one of the greatest medical advances of the 20th century; Sabin was a Russian-born American medical researcher who developed an oral polio vaccine around the same time as Salk's achievement. Two items: First, a Salk TNS, 1p, 8½" X 11", San Diego, CA, 1990 November 13. Addressed to John Stanger. Near fine. Faint mailing folds. On letterhead of "The Salk Institute," Salk muses: "When in my teens I learned that it was important to find a purpose in life and to pursue it. In the course of my pursuit I learned of the wisdom taught by that lesson." Usual small but bold signature in black fineline. Second, a Sabin ANS, 1p, 8½" X 4", n.p., 1991 February 14. Near fine. Faint mailing folds. Wonderful sentiment on a favorite book, boldly penned in black fineline: "I have read many books in my 84 years that had an impact on my career and philosophy of life -- but not until I began reading and re-reading the book named below did I realize how ignorant I was all my life: 'THE DISCOVERERS: A History of Man's Search to Know His World and Himself,' by Daniel J. Boorstin (former Librarian of Congress)...." Handsome full signature
