Dunham (b. 1949), American painter and print maker: "... initially influenced by Post- Minimalism, process art and conceptual art, he was soon attracted to the tactility and allusions to the body in the work of Brice Marden, Robert Mangold and Robert Ryman. Spurred on by the revival of interest in Surrealism in the 1970s, Dunham began to make abstract, biomorphic paintings reminiscent of the work of Arshile Gorky and André Masson, executed with a comic twist ..." - (Falconer, GROVE ART ONLINE).       Kalamazoo: Rarach Press, 1989. ONE OF 38 COPIES, signed by the artist/publisher (this is copy #30). 333 x 248 mm (13 1/8 x 9 3/4"). STRIKING MULTI-TEXTURED BINDING BY JAN SOBOTA (stamp-signed on rear doublure), covers of sueded calfskin printed with original etchings, flat spine of brown catfish leather, turn-ins and headbands covered in eel skin, BEIGE PIGSKIN DOUBLURES covered with original etchings, leather hinges. In an encapsulated pigskin slipcase covered with etchings, beige linen pull-off spine with brown morocco label. With 16 etchings of flora and fauna by Ladislav Hanka. A mint copy. This is a handsomely-produced book arts collaboration celebrating the natural beauty of Kalamazoo County, Michigan, featuring a memorable binding by Czech master binder Jan Sobota. After studying with Karel Silinger in Pilsen and at the School for Applied Arts in Prague and then working in Switzerland, Sobota came to the United States, where he spent 15 years, mostly working at Southern Methodist University. He returned to Loket, Czech Republic, in 1997, where he founded the Sobota family bookbinding studio and helped to organize the Society of Czech Bookbinders, becoming its first president. He has won numerous awards for his innovative and often whimsical work, which has been exhibited worldwide. The present volume is equal parts inventiveness and elegance. Book artist and publisher Ladislav Hanka (b. 1952) earned degrees in biology and zoology before receiving his MFA in printmaking, and his background in the natural sciences obviously infuses his art, which focuses on the flora and fauna of forests and lakes. This volume's collection of prose and poetry inspired by the natural landscape is enhanced by Hanka's dramatic etchings of twisted, bare-limbed trees, fossils, and insects. The letterpress work was done by Amy Bollinger on heavy handmade paper.

        Inside World

New York: Thea Westreich, 1989. Deluxe Edition. Quarto in slipcase. Number 139 of 250 numbered copies; SIGNED by Prince and dated 1989. With a SIGNED handwritten joke laid in as issued. An early artist book by Richard Prince, mostly full-bleed color images of cowboys, bikers, girlfriends, and jokes, with several pages of birdtalk scattered in. Sometimes overlooked is Prince's role as co-curator of the exhibition at Kent Gallery for which this book was published. In this capacity, Prince seamlessly weaves the work of Man Ray, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, Cindy Sherman and Andy Warhol into his own narrative. So successful is this appropriation that most casual readers never notice the other collaborators. Fine in gilt-stamped red boards, matching red slipcase; original artwork also fine.

In the Matter of Peter Edward Rose, Manager, Cincinnati Reds Baseball Club: Report to the Commissioner (a.k.a. The Dowd Report)

New York: Office of the Commissioner Major League Baseball. May 9, 1989. First. First edition. Quarto. Plastic comb-bound photo duplicated pages with a clear plastic front cover, and card rear cover. 225pp. Handwritten copyright notice on the title leaf. A small chip and tear on the plastic front cover, page edges a bit thumbed, a near fine copy. The damning report prepared by attorney John Dowd for the Commissioner of Major League Baseball, which resulted in the lifetime ban of Pete Rose from Major League Baseball. This copy Inscribed by the Commissioner of Major League Baseball to a young attorney in Dowd's office: "To ---, Thank you for all your help -- Bart Giamatti." Purchased by us directly from an attorney, then working in Dowd's office, who reports that when Giamatti received the final report at Dowd's office, he promised to sign autographs for the staff, most of whom proffered baseballs. Our friend offered the report instead, the evidence of which we offer here. Apparently later generation copies of this report occasionally appear in the sports world signed by either Dowd or Rose, but we have not heard of another signed by Giamatti, who died less than four months later at the age of 51, only eight days after his final decision to ban Rose. Rare thus. .
