ANTHONY, Piers
np, 1990. First Edition. 8.5" x 11" typescript (computer word-processor-generated, almost certainly daisy wheel) on perforated printer paper. Minor creasing to some pages. A bit of toning overall. Remnants of a smoky smell (both Anthony and his wife were smokers). Two small corrections to the text, presumably by Anthony, else clean throughout. Very good plus to near fine. [2], 237, [1]. Very Good +. The complete typescript and author's note for Anthony's 1990 young-adult sci-fi novel BALOOK, the publisher's copy sent by Anthony to his publisher Underwood-Miller who brought the novel out in 1990. Published the same year as Michael Crichton's JURASSIC PARK, Anthony's story also revolves around the genetic resurrection of an extinct dinosaur. A coming-of-age story of sorts comparing the maturation of the Baluchitherium "Balook" with that of his young friend Thor. Perhaps most noteworthy, however, for Anthony's "Author's Note" which closes the book (as well as the manuscript here). It recounts BALOOK's long and circuitous road to publication and remains one of Anthony most concentrated and sustained pieces on the science fiction genre, his working methods, and the writer's craft. It ends, appropriately enough, thusly: "I mentioned word processing programs. I had discovered one called Finalword that promised to be even better for me than my prior ones [...] But it was complex, and not perfectly adapted to me system or my Dvorak keyboard; it would be a monster to break in. So I decided to use [...] a short novel to break it in; once I have novelized a thing, I really understand i … [Click Below for Full Description]

Johnston, Ollie and Thomas, Frank (Authors and Artists); Davis, Marc and Noble, Maurice (Artists)
New York: Stewart, Tabori & Chang [1990]. Johnston, Ollie and Thomas, Frank. First Edition. Quarto size, 208 pp., signed by Ollie Johnston, Frank Thomas, Marc Davis, and Maurice Noble. Both the book and the companion flip book are signed by animators Ollie Johnston, Frank Thomas, Marc Davis, and Maurice Noble. Johnston, Thomas, and Davis were three of Walt Disneys' "Nine Old Men", and Marc Davis developed and animated the characters of Bambi and Thumper. Maurice Noble was with Disney Studios for the early part of his career and worked on the development of the Bambi film. Who amongst us has not either read the book by Felix Salten, published in the 1920s, or seen the film done in 1942? As the authors wrote, "From the start, 'Bambi' was a very different picture. It had a fantasy and reality all its own, separate from Walt Disney's other films. This was no imaginary forest that one could enter and leave at will. Whoever ventured in became part of an experience so strong that neither heart nor mind could ever forget its impact". This book bridges the worlds between the book and the film, and invite us into the world in which the authors and animators worked and lived every day: how to bring the magic of the book and the story onto the big screen. Apparently Walt Disney himself envisioned such a book, for the authors dedicated the book to him with the following words: "We dedicate this book to Walt Disney, who asked for it fifty years ago....Sorry, Walt - you always said we were slow". We are offering this set together, as they were originally sold and as they were meant to be, … [Click Below for Full Description]

William Butler Yeats (1865-1939) was both an Irish poet and ardent nationalist; he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1923, shortly after Ireland gained independence. Helen Vendler says of Yeats in her insightful introduction that he was "one of the most gifted, driven, and complex figures of twentieth-century art and politics". With six etchings by Richard Diebenkorn (1922-1993), abstract artist and winner of the National Medal of Arts in 1991; for this volume he "took the Yeatsian theme of an empty coat on a hanger to produce a series of prints transforming the garment from a representational frock-coat into an abstracted suit-bag. The sixth etching is a double map of Ireland, indicative of that divided country" (from web site of Arion Press). ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter red goatskin with evergreen cloth boards, gilt lettering on the spine, limitation statement at the front with artist's signature in pencil, this no. 155 of 400 copies for sale, title page in red and black, poem titles in red; quarto size (10.5" by 8.25"), pagination: [i-vi] vii-xxv [xxvi-xxxi] [1-2] 3-171 [172] [1 colophon], limited edition of 400 copies, plus 26 NFS, this no. 155, signed by Richard Diebenkorn on the limitation statement at the front of the book. Whitman, Walt; Siskind, Aaron (Photographer)
[New York]: The Limited Editions Club, (1990). Siskind, Aaron. Limited Edition. No. 351 of 550 copies, elephant folio size, [52] pp., signed by Aaron Siskind, with LEC Newsletter. In 1855 the first issue of "Leaves of Grass" was published at the expense of the author Walt Whitman (1819-1892) in an edition of 795 copies. During the five years that followed, Whitman wrote constantly and prepared a second edition, published (again at his own expense) in 1856, with several new poems, including the present "Song of the Open Road". It celebrates that image of the vagabond poet that was so essential to Whitman's work, wherein the poet takes a symbolic journey, immersed in uncorrupted naturalness, disavowing one way of life and embracing experiences intuitively, free of custom. Kindred spirit Aaron Siskind (1903-1991) was a subversive American photographer, and public member of the politically conscious Photographers League. The present illustrations "transform Whitman's symbolic journeyings into the language of modern urbanism" (LEC Newsletter Number 560, Series 50, Volume 4). The six photos are of tar poured into cracks in cement and asphalt, which form wandering lines across the compositions, magnified to create a textural, abstract expression synonymous with the poem. ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter black morocco spine and fore-edges with dark green linen boards, title in gilt on the spine, six photogravures; Scotch Roman type, off-white paper mould-made at the mill of Cartiere Enrico Magnani, elephant folio size (17.5" by 15"), 52 unnumbered pages, one of 550 copies, this number 351, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mann, Thomas; Hejduk, John (Lithographs); Shapiro, David (Afterword)
[New York]: The Limited Editions Club (printed by Heritage Printers, Inc.), (1990). Hejduk, John. Limited Edition. No. 122 of 375 copies, quarto size, 193 pp., signed by John Hejduk, with LEC Monthly Letter. German writer Thomas Mann (1875-1955), a recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1929, is best known for his novels and short stories employing symbolism and examining the psyche of those in intellectual circles, most famously in his works "Buddenbooks" and "Death in Venice"; he wrote "The Black Swan" in 1954, and the novella revolves around an aging woman who must deal with her changing body and the expectations of an uncaring society that values youth over old age. Noted for being one of the first works to utilise hard medicine in the narrative, "The Black Swan" is here published by the Limited Editions Club, with lithographs by celebrated architect and artist John Hejduk (1929-2000), who brings an architect's eye for symmetry and simplicity in his geometric imagery. This edition includes an afterword by David Shapiro (b. 1947), a prolific poet and literary critic, whose first book was published when he was eighteen; offering insight and a sympathetic view of the brutality and bluntness often found in Mann's prose, he writes "A master of X-ray, [Mann] leads us to the master montage of disease itself. And to the possible health of love." ___DESCRIPTION: Full brown leather, title in black on the front board, black endpapers, lithographs printed in two colours by John Hejduk throughout; Monotype Gill Sans, mouldmade Rives Buff Text paper, quarto size (12" by 9.25") … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hemingway, Ernest. Photogravures by Alfred Eisenstaedt. Introduction by Charles Scribner
Limited Editions Club, New York, 1990. First Limited Editions Club limited edition of Hemingway's Nobel Prize-winning masterpiece, signed by photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt. Oblong quarto, bound in one quarter morocco over cloth-covered boards, illustrated with five photogravures by Alfred Eisenstaedt printed from the original negatives by Eisenstaedt in 1952 for the Life Magazine featuring the iconic image of Hemingway on the cover. One of only 600 copies signed by Alfred Eisenstaedt on the limitation page, this is number 5. In fine condition. Housed in the original black suede-lined cloth clamshell case with The Limited Editions Club newsletter dated June 1990 laid in. In a career that lasted more than 50 years, German-born American photographer and photojournalist Alfred Eisenstaedt achieved fame as "the quintessential Life photographer", producing more than 90 cover photographs for the iconic magazine (New York Times). An enthusiast for small 35 mm film cameras, Eisenstaedt's style and technique allowed him to create more relaxed atmospheres when shooting famous people where he was able to capture more natural poses and expressions. His success at establishing a relaxed setting for his subjects was not without difficulties, however, during the epic photo shoot of Hemingway in his boat for the Life Magazine story of Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea, Hemingway was rumored to have ripped off his own shirt and threatened to throw Eisenstaedt overboard. "He was," Eisenstaedt once said of Hemingway, "the most difficult man I ever photographed." [Attributes: First Edition; … [Click Below for Full Description]
