1988. Excellent condition in all respects. DJ fully intact with light creasing at top edge and inside rear flap. Clean, bright, and straight. Couple of tiny stains on the right hand page edges that do not extend into the visible/readable page areas. No dog ears, tears, objectionable odors, etc. I don't know the backstory behind the inscription, which I'm guessing is him having some fun with "Dave" and telling him to stay away from magic mushrooms. I at first thought he had misspelled cryptograms, but it is more plausible that he meant cryptogams. In any event, the 11/3/88 signature matches others of the era, roughly a year before his death. Includes a bookmark from the now defunct Stone Lion Bookstore in Fort Collins, Colorado. If I had to guess, I'd say this was purchased there and potentially signed there at an event. Book will be well packaged and fully insured commensurate with its value and rarity. Signature required. Any questions at all, please ask.

The book is like new. It contains a note to a friend: "Dear Helen A happy 75! This slim volume can in no way compare with joys your friendship has afforded me for over 50 years. Love & Devotion James Furthermore, you probably read it when it was first printed in The Atlantic Monthly in July, 1960. JRH" About the book: " 'The Scarlet Ibis' first appeared in the Atlantic Monthly in July, 1960 issue and won the 'Atlantic First' award that year. It was quickly recognized by literary critics, and the story appears in collections and virtually every high school literature textbooks published in the U.S. When asked about the meaning of the story, Hurst answered: "I hesitate to respond, since authors seldom understand what they write. That is why we have critics. I venture to say, however, that is comments on the tenacity and the splendor of the human spirit." A key passage form the story is the following sentence: I did not know then that pride is a wonderful, terrible, thing, a seed that bears two vines, life and death." About the opera: "Now in its third season, Prototype Festival, co-produced by HERE and Beth Morrison Projects, has become a major leader in opera theater for the twenty-first century. Roald Dahl
Roald Dahl (1988) 'Matilda', UK first edition, first printing, published by Jonathan Cape. Signed by Dahl on the ffep without personalisation in his typical bold black pen. Condition: a near fine book in a very good dust jacket. Very slight shelf wear with no major bumps. Clean boards, and clean page block without any foxing. No previous owners' names nor scribbles. The Roald Dahl signature has offset on the front paste down and the front flap of the jacket. This is quite common with the pen that Dahl used to sign books. The dust jacket is very good with slight creases and the mentioned offset on the front flap. Not price clipped showing the correct GBP 8.50 net price. One of the scarcest signed Roald Dahl first editions and one of the most coveted as 'Matilda' is one of his best works ranking on a par with 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' and 'The BFG'. Published in October 1988 the book achieved immediate landmark status and is widely read among children and adults alike. Adapted as a film in 1996. Rolad Dahl sadly passed away in November 1990. First and Fine. [Attributes: First Edition]
