Braunschweig: ARCHIV VERLAG, 1988. Facsimile. John Updike
Published by Andre Deutsch (London 1988). First British edition. Of an edition of 97 copies, this is a signed but unnumbered copy of the issue of 75, bound in marbled paper-covered sides and leather backstrip, in a slipcase of the same marbled design as the book sides. Issued without dust jacket. 244 pp. Unread. The leather was originally dark green, but, as often happens with green leather, exposure to light and/or air has turned the spine to dark brown. As is common with this edition, the book and slipcase are very slightly worn at some corners. That being the case, I consider both book and slipcase Brand new. S. is the story of Sarah P. Worth, a thoroughly modern spiritual seeker who has become enamored of a Hindu mystic called the Arhat. A native New Englander, she goes west to join his ashram in Arizona, and there struggles alongside fellow sannyasins (pilgrims) in the difficult attempt to subdue ego and achieve moksha (salvation, release from illusion). S. details her adventures in letters and tapes dispatched to her husband, her daughter, her brother, her dentist, her hairdresser, and her psychiatrist - messages designed to keep her old world in order while she is creating for herself a new one. This is Hester Prynne's side of the triangle described by Hawthorne's Scarlet Letter; it is also a burlesque of the quest for enlightenment, and an affectionate meditation on American womanhood. As the only Updike limited ever published by his British publisher, this is both scarce and unusual. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Edward Abbey SIGNED 20th Anniversary Edition Rare
1988. Please see book description below as well as pictures! Rare Signing by Edwin Abbey of this Edition (Abbey died within 1 year of signing) 20th Anniversary Edition - 1988 Preface by Abbey Added to 20th Anniversary Edition Free Shipping Dust Jacket Now Protected by a Brodart Cover Please see pictures for more information and detail Desert Solitaire, Abbey's fourth book and first non-fiction work, was published in 1968. In it, he describes his stay in the canyon lands of southeastern Utah from 1956-1957. Desert Solitaire is regarded as one of the finest nature narratives in American literature, and has been compared to Aldo Leopold's A Sand County Almanac and Thoreau's Walden. In it, Abbey vividly describes the physical landscapes of southern Utah and delights in his isolation as a back country park ranger, recounting adventures in the nearby canyon country and mountains. He also attacks what he terms the "industrial tourism" and resulting development in the national parks ("national parking lots"), rails against the Glen Canyon Dam, and comments on various other subjects. (See Wikipedia for more information) *****The book is in excellent condition especially for its age. There is a previous owner's inscription opposite title page.Very light bumping to corners. There is a Nature Company ribbon around book with a gold seal that reads "Nature Company Signed Limited Edition" The copyright page does not show it to be a limited edition(?). Springs, Alice
Paris: Paris Audiovisuel, 1988. First Edition. First Edition. INSCRIBED in the year of publication by Alice Springs to Robin Gibson of the National Portrait Gallery in London: "Robin / What a wonderful time of my life it was with you and Terence at the N.P.G. / London / 17/11/88." Robin Gibson worked at the National Portrait Gallery, London from 1968 - 2001, and served as the head curator from 1994 until his retirement. During his time at the Gallery, he was responsible for many innovations, including the addition of sculpture, photography, and film to the collections, as well as redesigns of the galleries, reinvigorating the museum and modernizing it. Australian actress June Brown married Helmut Newton in 1948. Taking her pseudonym from the Australian town, Alice Springs, she became a successful photographer in her own right, with 6 portraits hanging in the National Portrait Gallery in London, four more than her more famous husband. A wonderful association between an artist and a curator who recognized her talent. Fine and unread in green boards, 4.5 x 6.25 inches, with a die-cut to the front board and without a dust jacket as issued. Catalog of an exhibition held at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris from October 25 to December 31, 1988. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; In Dust Jacket]

INSCRIBED by the author to New York theater set designer Susan Barras on the title page: "Susan Barras. / May God's blessing be with you always. / In all sincerity / Peter Cushing '92." An uncommon signature from the meticulous actor whose name is synonymous with the great Hammer films of the 1950s through the 1970s (as Baron Frankenstein and Dr. Van Helsing, among other roles). Cushing also played Sherlock Holmes many times, and was memorable late in his career as Grand Moff Tarkin in the original "Star Wars" film, Darth Vader's unlucky first in command. Carver, Raymond
S.i., Port Angeles, WA, 1988. Autograph letter on white bond (measuring 8.5" x 11"); 23 lines (176 words), and signed "Yours, Ray Carver" along lower edge. Two old folds smoothed-out, else Near Fine; with original mailing envelope, franked, postmarked 8 March, 1988. A late letter from Carver to Salter, full of admiration, as well as regret over a missed opportunity to meet. "Many thanks for your good letter. It was not for want of trying that I missed your reading, and with it the opportunity to meet you, last month. Tess and I had made our arrangements to come over, I'd spoken to Rick S. about putting aside the tickets for us, and I had the hotel reservations made. Then, very bad luck: I had a sudden flare-up, call it that, from the long surgery I'd had to undergo last fall. Everything was at sixes and sevens, and I was in the hospital for tests and this and that the night you gave your reading. I'm sorry all the way around! I hope we will meet, and sooner rather than later. As you must know, I've been one of your greatest fans, since the time I picked up a copy of A Sport and a Pastime many years ago in a bookstore in Jerusalem, of all places. And I've been hooked ever since." The two men would never meet, and this would be among the last letters Carver would ever write; he'd be back in the hospital by early July, and dead from lung cancer four weeks later. Takahata, Isao (director, screenwriter); Akiyuki Nosaka (novel); Tsutomu Tatsumi, Ayano Shiraishi, Yoshiko Shinohara, Akemi Yamaguchi (starring)
Tokyo: Shinchosha, 1988. Draft script for the 1988 Japanese animated film. Text and titles in Japanese. Based on Akiyuki Nosaka's semi-autobiographical short story, following the final days of two Japanese children during World War II. Nosaka purportedly heartily approved of the choice to adapt his story as an animated film, noting that he believed it would have been impossible to create the bleak backdrop or find child actors able to create a film of the subject in any other way. The second film animated by Studio Ghibli, best known for its animated films directed by Hayao Miyazaki. Set in Kobe. Black titled wrappers. 64 leaves, with last page of text numbered 124. Xerographic duplication, printed on rectos and versos. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Very Good plus, with light foxing to the page edges, bound perfectly. Ebert II.
