Clavis Artis.

8 Bll., 147 S. (Titel in schwarz/rot), 6 Bll. (Index), Kl.-8, Gemusterter Interimskarton d. Zt. Ferguson II, 570 (Anmerkung) Duveen 634 Ferchl 598 Neu 4438 Brüning 4327 Kopp II, 364. - Selten.

        Nohow On

[New York]: The Limited Editions Club, 1989. Limited Edition. Leather bound. Fine. Ryman, Robert. Number 240 of 550 copies, quarto size, [136] pp., signed by Samuel Beckett and Robert Ryman. Samuel Beckett (1906-1989) was renowned for his writing which often had a bleak, tragicomic outlook on human existence; he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1969. "Nohow On" is a collection of three prose pieces comprising Company, Ill Seen Ill Said, and Worstword Ho. The square off-white aquatints by modern artist Robert Ryman perfectly compliment this work by Irish avant-garde writer Samuel Beckett whose later work was at its most minimalist and biting. The first line, "A voice comes to one in the dark. Imagine." puts the two artists in direct communication: Ryman's light filled plates carving into the obscure dark places drawn by Beckett - an absolute masterpiece in both form and substance. ***DESCRIPTION: Bound by Garthegaat Bindery in full black Nigerian oasis goatskin, lettered in gilt to upper board and backstrip, housed in a black cloth fall-down-back box with grey suede lining and leather gilt-stamped label inset to backstrip, white endpapers, six original aquatint etchings with original tissue guards, typeset in English Monotype Bodoni at Golgonooza Letterfoundry with new descending characters from punches cut by Daniel Carr, the display type is Bauer Bodoni, paper made at Cartiere Enrico Magnani, etchings printed on Arches at Wingate Studio and Renaissance Press, quarto size (10.75" by 7.5"), [i-iv] [1-4] 5-128 [4] pp., limited edition, this number 240 of 550 copies, signed by Samuel Beckett and Robert Ryman. ***CONDITION: An absolutely flawless copy, breathtaking; very fine in a like case. ***CITATION: A Century of Artists Books, p. 201. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply, please inquire for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         1001 Izbrannyi Sovetskii Politicheskii Anekdot [1001 Selected Soviet Political Jokes]. Soviet samizdat edition

[Soviet Union], 1989. Ca. 110 leaves of computer-printed text to rectos and versos, measuring 29 x 20 cm, loose in unlabeled paper folder. First page creased to lower margin, else very good. Samizdat edition of this famous collection of Soviet political anecdotes and jokes, published in 1986 in Tenafly, New Jersey (Hermitage Press). It is unclear whether our copy precedes the printed emigre edition, or whether it was printed after the latter was smuggled to the Soviet Union. It was produced using a mainframe computer and captures the intriguing juncture of dissident practices and digital technology. Beginning in the late 1970s, during the early days of computing, employees at some Soviet institutions managed to print banned texts using line (or drum) printers, usually during night shifts (the use of duplication technology was usually tightly controlled by the state). By the 1980s, such printers produced text at a rate of several hundred lines per minute. The files containing the texts could be moved from mainframe to mainframe using magnetic tape. Regarding this collection, a scholar on Soviet anecdotes writes: "There are many collections of Soviet anecdotes. ... The funniest, most clever presentation of a large number of these that I have seen is Iulius Telesin's 1001 Izbrannyi Sovetskii Politicheskii Anekdot. Telesin arranged 1001 well-chosen anecdotes topically and added humorous rhyming quatrains called chastushki (the Russian equivalent of limericks), excerpts from Soviet dissident publications such as the Khronika tekushchikh sobytii (Chronicle of Current Events) and other snippets to make a very entertaining book" (Bruce Friend Adams 2005, 2). The compiler, Iuliius Telesin (1933), was a Soviet poet and translator, and a noted participant of Soviet samizdat culture of theh 1960s. After 1970, he lived in Israel. The original 1986 edition is well-represented in KVK and OCLC, but neither show a samizdat copy.
