Vingt prophéties de Michel de Nostradamus, derniérement trouvées manuscrites dans une célèbre bibliotheque des Pays-Bas. Avec explication et figures.Liège, [ca. 1789]. 8vo. With 20 engraved emblems at the beginning of each chapter, several by Pieter Balthazar Bouttats. Contemporary mottled tanned sheepskin, gold-tooled spine, marbled edges.

Chomarat, M. & J.-P. Laroche, Bibliographie Nostradamus (Baden-Baden 1989) 372; WorldCat (6 copies). Rare first edition of a work containing 20 adapted prophecies of the French apothecary and seer Michel de Nostradamus (1503-1566). Nostradamus's predictions, first published in 1555 as Les proheties, are here edited by an anonymous author, giving an explanation and opinion of each prophecy. Each prophecy is preceded by an oval emblematic engraving, of which 6 are signed by the Antwerp-based engraver Pieter Balthazar Bouttats (1666-1756). Since the engravings don't relate to the text, they were probably originally made to illustrate an earlier work, and were reused in the present work. With bookplate. Browned, with some occasional small spots or stains, but otherwise in good condition. Binding worn along the extremities, bottom of spine damaged.

ORIGINAL ART: MOTHER GOOSE AND THE SLY FOX / VILLAGE SCENE

      - CONOVER,CHRIS. ORIGINAL ART: MOTHER GOOSE AND THE SLY FOX / VILLAGE SCENE. Offered here is a finished watercolor used in Conover's book published in 1989 entitled Mother Goose and the Sly Fox. The piece is large - image measure 19" wide x 8 1/2" high on artist board 22 x 11 1/2, signed. It is incredibly wonderful both in imagry and execution. The piece is an elaborate rendering of the village with stores, restaurants and even a herring kiosk for the cats. Across the river we see the "bad" part of town where the foxes live, practicing 3-card monte. It appears in the book as a double page spread on pages 8-9, Conover has been illustrating children's books since 1974. Her work is noted for rich colors and incredible attention to detail, some of which is executed using a magnifying glass for accuracy. There is plenty to look at but without the overcrowding that hampers many books. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Portrait of Shirley MacLaine (Original photograph, signed by the photographer)

N.p.: N.p., 1989. Original portrait of Shirley MacLaine, taken circa 1960s, Shot, struck, and mounted by photographer, Bob Willoughby, and INSCRIBED by him on the verso: "To Michael [and] Deirdre / Happy Daze! / Bob Willoughby / 11-24-89 / Coolmaine Castle." Full provenance available. After studying with Saul Bass at the Kann Institute of Art in Los Angeles, Willoughby began working as a photographer for magazines such as "Life," "Look," and "Harper's Bazaar" in the late 1940s. It was while on assignment covering Judy Garland in a "A Star is Born" that Willoughby's ability to capture his subjects' spontaneity, humor, and vulnerability, resulting in images that were far different from more traditional film stills, came to Hollywood's attention and earned him his first "Life" magazine cover. Willoughby spent the next 20-plus years working as a set photographer for every major studio, documenting some of most important films of the era and creating intimate portraits of some of Hollywood's greatest celebrities. Technically and stylistically innovative, Willoughby built the first remote radio-controlled cameras used on film sets, pioneered the use of the "silent blimp" for 35mm cameras, and created brackets to mount his cameras directly over the movie cameras to capture the same images. Willoughby moved his family to County Cork, Ireland in 1972, working on only a handful of films through the late 1970s and early 1980s, though he would continue to photograph, exhibit, and publish books for the remainder of his life. The stills in this collection were given by Willoughby to friends in Kilbrittain, Ireland just prior to his move to Vence, France in 1989, where he would remain until his death in 2009. Perhaps more than any other photographer, Willoughby is responsible for creating the the look of mid-century celebrity and moviemaking in the popular imagination, with his images printed in magazines literally every week of his career. But beyond being prolific, Willoughby's legacy rests with his ability capture the essence of the actors he photographed, as well as the films with which those photographs were associated. As Sydney Pollack said in his introduction to Willoughby's autobiography, "Sometimes a filmmaker gets a look at a photograph taken on his own set and sees the 'soul' of his film in one still photograph. It's rare, but it happens. It happened to me in 1969, the first time I looked at the work of Bob Willoughby during the filming of "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" Willoughby's photographs are in the permanent collections of ten museums, including The National Portrait Galleries in Washington, DC and London, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, The Museum of Modern Art, and The Tate Modern. 13 x 19.5 inches (33 x 50 cm), mounted on board. Lightly rubbed and Near Fine.

        In Memoriam Felis Felis

Sixth Chamber Press, (Leamington Spa) 1989 - First edition. Six illustrations by R.B. Kitaj. Quarter cloth and papercovered boards. Fine in a lightly rubbed, near fine illustrated slipcase. This conforms to the issues of 1/26 lettered copies but is unlettered and Signed by both Updike and Kitaj, presumably this is one of an additional six copies so bound and reserved for the publisher. Inscribed by Updike to Herb Yellin: "for Herb, Kitaj's work is for the birds but maybe it all goes together. Best, John." Herb Yellin was the founder and publisher of Lord John Press and the most frequent of Updike's fine press collaborators. He named his press after noting that the list of authors he wanted to publish all shared the same first name, chief among them John Updike, his favorite. *Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu* became the press's first book in 1977 with 10 more to follow over the next 23 years. Yellin's friendship with Updike grew with each new limited edition benefitting his already enormous Updike collection, with Updike himself contributing copies of new editions of his books - often inscribed. In a 2010 interview with Yellin he noted that Updike ".liked that if anything ever happened to his own collection, he had my collection on the opposite side of the country." A notable association.         Lost & Found

Caliban Press 1989 - This is an out-of-series copy (not numbered) signed by both Berrigan and Ely at the time of publication. It has been in Ely’s possession, in unbound sheets, ever since.Planetary Collage Standard binding structure, leather under wood boards, rivets, pigments, resin, gold, and wax. Spanish handmade paper with relief block illustrations (as issued) with extensive over painting and embellishment. One extra, unique fold-out drawing in the rear. Endpapers are Ely standard graph paper he printed in 1987. Housed in a felt-lined, handmade paste paper and custom cloth covered dropback box by the artist. Bound by Timothy Ely in 2016. 6.25 x 8.5 In 1989, Mark McMurray wrote to Berrigan, who he knew slightly and admired greatly, asking the priest if he had any manuscripts that he might like to have published by McMurray’s Caliban Press. As McMurray recalled recently, Berrigan was very kind, invited him to meet in the city, and gave him a handful of manuscripts to read. Lost & Found was the story that really resonated. McMurray showed it to Ely, with whom he was studying bookbinding. Ely, whose art frequently incorporates maps of non-physical locations, was intrigued by the story and agreed to illustrate it for the Caliban Press limited edition.Lost & Found was originally issued by Caliban Press in 125 numbered copies with 3 full page and two smaller illustrations by Ely, printed and hand-colored by Mark McMurray, and bound by McMurray with silk-backed boards illustrated on the upper board with the Ely frontispiece print. In the summer of 2015, after a conversation about altered books, Ely had the idea of "altering" a copy of Lost & Found. Thus, twenty-seven years after the initial printing, Ely completed a unique, lavishly illustrated copy of the book, significantly altered from the original publication. Unlike the case with many "altered books," these illustrations are not a violation of the artist’s original intent. Rather, this copy, both book and binding, is an elaboration of Ely’s work as the original artist. As is typical in his life full of strange coincidences, Ely finished binding this very special copy of Lost & Found the day before Berrigan died (d. April 30, 2016). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
