Lost & Found

Caliban Press 1989 - This is an out-of-series copy (not numbered) signed by both Berrigan and Ely at the time of publication. It has been in Ely’s possession, in unbound sheets, ever since.Planetary Collage Standard binding structure, leather under wood boards, rivets, pigments, resin, gold, and wax. Spanish handmade paper with relief block illustrations (as issued) with extensive over painting and embellishment. One extra, unique fold-out drawing in the rear. Endpapers are Ely standard graph paper he printed in 1987. Housed in a felt-lined, handmade paste paper and custom cloth covered dropback box by the artist. Bound by Timothy Ely in 2016. 6.25 x 8.5 In 1989, Mark McMurray wrote to Berrigan, who he knew slightly and admired greatly, asking the priest if he had any manuscripts that he might like to have published by McMurray’s Caliban Press. As McMurray recalled recently, Berrigan was very kind, invited him to meet in the city, and gave him a handful of manuscripts to read. Lost & Found was the story that really resonated. McMurray showed it to Ely, with whom he was studying bookbinding. Ely, whose art frequently incorporates maps of non-physical locations, was intrigued by the story and agreed to illustrate it for the Caliban Press limited edition.Lost & Found was originally issued by Caliban Press in 125 numbered copies with 3 full page and two smaller illustrations by Ely, printed and hand-colored by Mark McMurray, and bound by McMurray with silk-backed boards illustrated on the upper board with the Ely frontispiece print. In the summer of 2015, after a conversation about altered books, Ely had the idea of "altering" a copy of Lost & Found. Thus, twenty-seven years after the initial printing, Ely completed a unique, lavishly illustrated copy of the book, significantly altered from the original publication. Unlike the case with many "altered books," these illustrations are not a violation of the artist’s original intent. Rather, this copy, both book and binding, is an elaboration of Ely’s work as the original artist. As is typical in his life full of strange coincidences, Ely finished binding this very special copy of Lost & Found the day before Berrigan died (d. April 30, 2016). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Liberated Territory (Original screenplay for an unproduced film)

New York: Self published, 1989. First Draft script for an unproduced film titled "Liberated Territory," written by Jamal Joseph, who was a member of the Black Panther Party (joining when he was 15), specifically the Panther 21, a group of twenty-one members who were arrested in 1969 for the bombing and long-range rifle attack on government buildings in New York City. The trial eventually collapsed and the twenty-one members were acquitted. Notations throughout in holograph pencil (and highlighting) made by Joseph, presumably.Joseph's notable film credits include "30 Days" (2006), "Ali: An American Hero" (2000), and "Bad Blood" (Season 2, Episode 15 of "New York Undercover").Joseph was in attendance, and was a presenter, at the 1992 Sundance Film Festival, where he shot portions of his script, then called "Liberated Territory: A Rite of Passage." The story is largely autobiographical, about youth in the turmoil of the late 1960s, incorporating the assassinations of both Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and John F. Kennedy, the antiwar movement, riots, and the black power movement. The story focuses on an ex-Panther member, released from prison, who returns home to New York City to find that drugs and crime have taken over his neighborhood, where once members of the Black Panthers had cleaned up the area.In an interview with Robert Epstein of the Los Angeles Times, Joseph said that the "message is clear ... Things are worse. But in the movie an old man reminds the main character, the ex-Panther, that there is work to be done. That there isn't much time.. You have to start at some point, at some corner. Liberation will grow from that. It's the same thing in real life, too. The people in the communities have to make the changes. We have to reinvigorate the communities, reenergize them."White self wrappers, noted as First Draft on the front wrapper, dated November 4, 1989, with a credit for screenwriter Joseph. Title page integral with front wrapper. 169 leaves, with last leaf of text numbered 168. Mechanically reproduced. Very Good plus overall, now encapsulated in mylar, bound with three gold brads.
