        Watchman

Bodley Head 1988 - A tight, signed copy of The Watch-Man by Ian Rankin. While this is a stand alone novel telling the story of intelligence man Miles Flint, it does contain a crossover character in Jim Stevens, the journalist who appears in the Inspector Rebus novels. This is the author's third novel and is an example of him still finding his footing in the world of literature. Although John Rebus is a staple in the mystery world these days, his debut appearance in Knots and Crosses wasn't initially met with acclaim and Rankin was exploring other protagonists and story lines in an attempt to break out. Book is in Fine condition. Spine is straight, no bumps to boards, no markings to pages and no dog ears or tears. Toning to pages. This is the UK True First Edition, First Printing. The DJ is in Fine condition and mylar-protected. Color is bright, no chips or tears. Very insignificant wrinkles to the head and toe of the spine. The book has been flat-signed to the title page by the author while at The Posined Pen Bookstore in February of 2017. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

In Cyrillic type:] O proischozhdenii vidov [= On the origin of species]. St. Petersburg, Alexander Illich Glazunov (printed by Glazunov), 1864. 8vo. With 1 lithographed plate showing Darwin's famous branching tree of life, and 4 pages of Glazunov's publisher's advertisements at the end, describing 25 publications. Set entirely in Cyrillic type. Modern half brown morocco, with the original publisher's printed back wrapper bound in.

      - Freeman 748; Alexander Vucinich, Darwin in Russian thought (1988), p. 19 & passim; WorldCat (4 copies). Rare first Russian edition of Darwin's On the origin of species, translated by Sergei A. Rachinskii, professor of botany at Moscow University. Like the first English edition it includes one plate, showing Darwin's famous branching tree of life, an icon of his theory of evolution. Darwin was both very popular and very influential in Russia. The present translator published an article presenting some of these ideas early in 1863, calling Darwin's Origin "one of the most brilliant books ever to be written in the natural sciences" (Vucinich, pp. 18-19). It helped give birth to a new generation of natural scientists in Russia whose students included the great Ivan Pavlov. But in Russia Darwin's influence went far beyond science. It inspired anti-czarist democratic political movements as well as Marx, Engels, Lenin, Trotsky and Stalin. Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky also refer to Darwin and his ideas became firmly imbedded in Russian culture generally. Foxed throughout, severely in a couple quires but not affecting the plate. Otherwise in good condition. It probably lacks an initial blank leaf. First Russian translation of Darwin's Origin, inaugurating a hey-day of natural science in Russia.

        Typed letter signed

one page, approximately 500 words 1 July 1988, London - An exceptional letter on the subject of his fellow Hogarth Press author William Plomer and his lover Tony Butts: "William d'Arfey [a pseudonym of Plomer's] was Tony Butts, and not only "Curious Relationships" [sic] but "Museum Pieces", its sequel, was also an account, perhaps with more licence, of Tony Butts' life." "Between us two, I believe William was motivated not only by his appreciation of the unique material Tony's life brought into his own, but by a certain remorse that he could not go on sharing a house and home with Tony as he had tried to do, nor keep too close to Tony because, much as he loved Tony, he did find him a threat to his own fastidious and marked concept of a life of classical form and order." Slight creasing, one or two spots of soiling else in very good condition.

Tapestry worked by Sarah Windrum" Signed in black ink "c. Philip Smith 1988 [&] Sarah Windrum" Philip Smith (born 1928) began as an art student in 1949 and took a bookbinding class ostensibly to make customized sketch books. His resulting binding led Roger Powell to select him for the Royal College of Art in 1951. Since about 1959, when he developed the techniques of feathered onlays with backparing, called 'maril', he has consistently explored the potential of the physical form of the book as an alternative art medium. Publications include numerous articles and catalogue introductions; as well as New Directions in Bookbinding, 1974, and The Book: Art & Object, 1982. He has added several new terms to the vocabulary of bookbinding and has been awarded patents for new inventions both visual and functional, as well as making innovations in structural and visual design now applied by an ever growing number of bookbinders. A past Director of the V & A Museum, Elizabeth Esteve-Coll, has written about Smith's work: 'As exhibition pieces they have a monumentality and visual impact that forces an original view of what binding is about'. Smith, a Past President of Designer Bookbinders, initiated its redevelopment and expansion in the late 1960s, and was an inaugural editor of The New Bookbinder, serving on the editorial board for 15 years. His work is in many international public and private collections. Philip Smith was awarded an MBE by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II several years ago. Sarah Windrum is a well-known and accomplished needlepoint artist. She has written several book on the subject including Needlepoint. Over 20 new and original projects for you to make. London: Octopus Books, 1982.

A Monograph of the Ramphastidae, or Family of Toucans

Hill House, 1988. 52 plates. Hardback. Fine in original publisher's packaging Originally published 1854. 'The volumes in this series are not mere reproductions. They are exact facsimiles of originals held in the Libraries of the British Museum (Natural History) in London and Tring. They are not reproductions, because no camera was used in transferring the images from the B.M.(N.H.) originals. Indeed the originals are taken by Museum security courier to the repro-house in Singapore, where they are subjected to the preparation of new plates for printing on 5 and 6 colour offset presses. The paper used is 130 gsm mat art paper. As facsimiles, the books carry faithfully every spot, mark or stain of the originals. They also carry the original Museum Department of Zoology stamps, and librarian's annotations. From behind glass, the naked eye would be unable to distinguish the original from the facsimile, so accurate is the colour printing. Also as facsimiles, they are exactly the same size as the originals (Imperial Folio: 22" x 15"). Each volume is hand sewn, cased-in and bound between 4 mm. boards covered in special Japanese Saifu cloth, gold stamped on the spine, and with the gold Crown Cipher of the British Museum (Natural History) on the front, and blind embossed on the inner margin of the front boards. The end-papers are of special wood-free heavy grade paper, printed in a generated repetitive pattern of the Museum's Library stamps. The publisher has not intruded into the authenticity of the books, leaving the publication data printed only on the very last page at the end of the book block. Each copy is hand inspected by the printer's quality control officer, individually numbered on the inside front board, hand wrapped in protective brown paper, and placed in its own crush-proof outer carton. The carton is then sealed, numbered and signed on the outside by the printer's quality control officer. Thus, no two copies are exactly the same. Although initial volumes were printed in more than 500 copies, later production runs have not exceeded 300'

Excellent condition with only minor signs of external shelfwear to the Volumes (corners and lower edges very slightly frayed) . All Volumes appear to be nearly unread. Very rare Collection ! The Incal (French: L'Incal) is a French science fiction comic book series written by Alejandro Jodorowsky and illustrated by Moebius and others. The Incal, originally released as Une aventure de John Difool ("A John Difool Adventure"), introduced Jodorowsky's "Jodoverse", a fictional universe in which his science fiction comics take place. (Wikipedia)nnAlejandro Jodorowsky Prullansky (Spanish: [ale'xand?o xoðo'?ofski]; born 17 February 1929) is a Chilean film and theatre director, screenwriter, playwright, actor, author, poet, producer, composer, musician, comics writer and spiritual guru. Best known for his avant-garde films, he has been "venerated by cult cinema enthusiasts" for his work which "is filled with violently surreal images and a hybrid blend of mysticism and religious provocation".nnBorn to Jewish-Ukrainian parents in Chile, Jodorowsky experienced an unhappy and alienated childhood, and so immersed himself in reading and writing poetry. Dropping out of college, he became involved in theater and in particular mime, working as a clown before founding his own theater troupe, the Teatro Mimico, in 1947. Moving to Paris in the early 1950s, Jodorowsky studied mime under Étienne Decroux before turning to cinema, directing the short film Les têtes interverties in 1957. From 1960 he divided his time between Paris and Mexico City, in the former becoming a founding member of the anarchistic avant-garde Panic Movement of performance artists. In 1966 he created his first comic strip, Anibal 5, while in 1967 he directed his first feature film, the surrealist Fando y Lis, which caused a huge scandal in Mexico, eventually being banned.nnHis next film, the acid western El Topo (1970), became a hit on the midnight movie circuit in the United States, considered as the first-ever midnight cult film, garnering high praise from John Lennon, which led to Jodorowsky being provided with $1 million to finance his next film. The result was The Holy Mountain (1973), a surrealist exploration of western esotericism. Disagreements with the film's distributor Allen Klein, however, led to both The Holy Mountain and El Topo failing to gain widespread distribution, although both became classics on the underground film circuit.nnAfter an aborted attempt at filming Frank Herbert's 1965 science fiction novel Dune, Jodorowsky produced three more films, the family film Tusk (1980), the surrealist horror Santa Sangre (1989), and the failed blockbuster The Rainbow Thief (1990). Meanwhile, he has simultaneously written a series of science fiction comic books, most notably The Incal (1980?1989), which has been described as having a claim to be "the best comic book" ever written, and also The Technopriests and Metabarons. Accompanying this, he has also written books and regularly lectures on his own spiritual system, which he calls "psychomagic" and "psychoshamanism" and which borrows from his interests in alchemy, the tarot, Zen Buddhism and shamanism. His son Cristóbal has followed his teachings on psychoshamanism; this work is captured in the feature documentary Quantum Men, directed by Carlos Serrano Azcona. (Wikipedia)nnJean Henri Gaston Giraud (8 May 1938 ? 10 March 2012) was a French artist, cartoonist and writer who worked in the Franco-Belgian bandes dessinées tradition. Giraud garnered worldwide acclaim predominantly under the pseudonym M?bius and to a lesser extent Gir, which he used for the Blueberry series and his paintings. Esteemed by Federico Fellini, Stan Lee and Hayao Miyazaki among others, he has been described as the most influential bandes dessinées artist after Hergé.nnHis most famous works include the series Blueberry, created with writer Jean-Michel Charlier, featuring one of the first anti-heroes in Western comics. As M?bius he created a wide range of science fiction and fantasy comics in a highly imaginative, surreal, almost abstract style. These works include Arzach and the Airtight Garage of Jerry Cornelius. He also collaborated with avant-garde filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky for an unproduced adaptation of Dune and the comic book series The Incal.nnM?bius also contributed storyboards and concept designs to numerous science fiction and fantasy films, such as Alien, Tron, The Fifth Element and The Abyss. In 2004, Moebius and Jodorowsky sued Luc Besson for using The Incal as inspiration for Fifth Element, a lawsuit which they lost. Blueberry was adapted for the screen in 2004 by French director Jan Kounen.

        The Old-time Printer.

Baltimore: Xavier Press, 1988. vi, 18pp. Samuel Clemens's account of his formative time spent as a printer's apprentice, presented as a speech at a dinner for New York printers. Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of Clemens and a vignette depicting a compositor setting type. This copy is in a designer binding by the Italian-British bookbinder Paolo Taddeo. Onlays of salmon, grey, and black morocco form the shape of a piece of lead type, outlined in palladium-leaf tooling, creating a symmetrical design on each of the covers. The artist chose the letter H for his design, citing the letter's visual stability and steadiness, "with both feet firmly planted on the ground." As someone whose first language is Italian, he also notes that his selection of the letter H is "controversial," since it is not pronounced in his native language and gives him difficulty in spoken English. However, he writes, "in my mother tongue it's a letter of vital importance in the way that it changes the sounds of the consonants it attaches to." Housed in a clamshell box that contains a drawer for the two pieces of seven- and ten-point type included with the book. Taddeo was elected a Licentiate of Designer Bookbinders in 2013 and has twice won the Arthur Johnson Award in the organization's annual competition. (2 1/2 by 2; 65x53mm).

A Leaf from "The First of May," a Fairy Masque. With an Essay on Walter Crane by Carolyn Johnson.

Fullerton, CA: Stone & Lorson, 1988. Folio. iv, 9ff. One of fifty copies designed and bound by Joseph D'Ambrosio, and signed by him, Carolyn Johnson, and Carmen Voss, the handcolorist. This twentieth-century leaf book contains a leaf from Act II scene one, from a portfolio edition of John R. Wise's poem "The First of May," illustrated and designed by Walter Crane (London, Sotheran, 1881). Crane's drawings, layout, and lettering of the text were done in pencil, and printed in Paris. Sotheran's proudly announced, "The process adopted has been the Photo-gravure of Messrs Goupil & Co., a process well-known to Artists for its absolute faithfulness and exquisite softness, but hitherto comparatively unknown to the general public." The Walter Crane plates were hand-colored by Carmen Voss. The unbound leaves are laid into a linen clamshell box designed by D'Ambrosio to serve as a frame for the leaf, with a plexiglass panel and gold leaf inserts. Very light soiling to linen, else very fine.

Zweiwochenschrift. Hrsg. von Hans Leybold (Nr. 5 hrsg. von Franz Jung). 1. Jahrg., Hefte 1-5. [Alles Erschienene.]

Gegen literaturbehaftete Oberlehrer, kunstsinnige Kritiker, allgemeine Rundschauer. In summa: Gegen Zuständliches. Und fügte hinzu:Nichtschriftsteller heraus! Keine Literaten sollen gezüchtet werden. Da hatte man die Revolution! Da war sie. 20 Jahre alt war der Kerl. Sehr hurtig. Und paffte einfach drauf los.? (Die weissen Blätter. Jahrg. 2, Heft 4. S. 525.) - Die fünf Nummern enthalten u.a. Beiträge von Hugo Ball, Johannes R. Becher, Ernst Blass, Franz Blei, Max Brod, Leonhard Frank, Iwan Goll, Walter Hasenclever, Emmy Hennings, Kurt Hiller, Jakob van Hoddis, Richard Huelsenbeck, Franz Jung, Klabund, Else Lasker-Schüler, Alfred Lichtenstein, Erich Mühsam, Robert Musil, Karl Otten, Ludwig Rubiner, René Schickele. Nr. 1 an Rücken u. Seitenkanten mit kleinen dezenten Restaurierungen u. Buchhandelsstempel, Umschlag von Nr. 1 u. Nr. 4 mit schwachen Notizen in Blei.       European Photography / Scientific Division, Göttingen, Germany 1988 - First edition, first printing. Signed in black ink on the half-title page by Fontcuberta. Soft cover. Brown paper wrappers with title printed in black on the cover and spine; no dust jacket as issued. Photographs and text (in English) by Joan Fontcuberta and Pere Formiguera. Designed by Tuna Ciner. 84 pp., with 86 black-and-white illustrations. 8-3/4 x 6-3/4 inches. [Cited in Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook: A History, Volume II. (London and New York: Phaidon, 2006).]. Fine. As David Levi Strauss writes in The Book of 101 Books, "The Catalan artist Joan Fontcuberta has been constructing elaborate historical fictions out of the excess credibility of photographs for some time, effectively (and often hilariously) calling the conventions of photographic believability into question in the process. Fauna is perhaps the most fully realized of these fictions.[This collaborative project] is presented as the recovered archive of a controversial German naturalist named Dr. Peter Ameisenhaufen (the name means 'anthill' in German, just as Formiguera means 'anthill' in Catalan), who travels around the world discovering new species of fantastic creatures and recording them with the help of his photographer Hans von Kubert (Joan Fontcuberta in German). In addition to evidential photographs of the weirdly appropriate hybrid animals, the archive also includes field notes (in German), maps, audio recordings, scientific papers, and other documents."         In Flagrante

London: Secker & Warburg, (1988) - 4to (302 × 246 mm), pp.[viii], 96. 50 black-and-white photographs, essay by John Berger and Sylvia Grant. Black endpapers. Black cloth-covered boards, upper side lettered in blind, spine lettered in silver. Photo-illustrated dust-jacket; light wear. Fine in a near-fine dust-jacket. First edition. These photographs show the effects of the decline of traditional British industry on the people living and working in and around Newcastle upon Tyne. Killip has said that he tried to make it obvious from the outset that photographs are not to be trusted and that he wanted ‘people to be conscious of the subjective nature of photography.’ As his introduction states, ‘the objective history of England doesn’t amount to much if you don’t believe in it, and I don’t, and I don’t believe that anyone in these photographs does either as they face the reality of de-industrialisation in a system which regards their lives as disposable. The book is a fiction about metaphor.’ To which John Berger adds in the afterword: ‘Fiction, I think. Because it is a story, not just information. About a human tragedy not an accident. Metaphor because it is through metaphor that, at first and last, we seek for meaning.’ The Open Book pp.340-1; Parr & Badger The Photobook: A History vol.II p.299; 802 photo books from the Auer collection p.675; Errata Editions: Books on Books no.4.
