VERY RARE. THE BEAUTIFULLY PRODUCED LIMITED DELUXE FIRST EDITION BY THE STAMPERIA VALDONEGO FOR THE CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS AND INSTITUTE OF TRADITIONAL SCIENCE, PRODUCED FROM BLAKE'S MANUSCRIPT AT THE FITZWILLIAM MUSEUM. This is by far the more appealing and appropriate presentation. AN ISLAND IN THE MOON is a dramatic satire critical for our understanding of William Blake at a formative stage of his development both as poet and producer of his "Illuminated Printing". "Here we have Blake's most playful expression as a satirist, and the beginnings of the SONGS OF INNOCENCE AND OF EXPRESSION, including three of the Songs in the draft" - dustjacket. Michael Phillips, of Edinburgh University has publications on William Blake which include "Interpreting Blake" and "William Blake Essays in Honour of Sir Geoffrey Keynes. Haven O'More was Director of the Institute of Traditional Science and was Associate Trustee of the William Blake Trust until the death of Sir Keynes. He is also famous for assembling one of the greatest private libraries of the 20th Century, the famed "Garden" collection of books and manuscripts.

Neural Darwinism: The Theory of Neuronal Group Selection. (PRESENTATION COPY, SIGNED BY GERALD M. EDELMAN.)

New York: Basic Books, 1987. - Signed, presentation copy of the the first printing of the First Edition. xxii, 346 pp; figs.; tables. Original cloth. Offsetting to front flyleaf, else Near Fine, in near fine dust jacket. Inscribed on flyleaf: 'For Bill Baker/with admiration/and warm regards/Gerry.' Gerald M. Edelman: Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, 1972 (shared with Rodney R. Porter), 'for their discoveries concerning the chemical structure of antibodies.' See William H. Calvin's review for Science 240: 1802-1803, 1988, on Calvin's site. 'When chaos theory came along (which, for me, is dated to Otto Rössler's famous paper of 1983), it started to become evident how basins of attraction lived in the connectionists' networks. When complexity theory and artificial life came along on their heels, the possibilities of getting to the bottom of Hebb's dual-trace memory seemed promising. Then in 1988, I spent more than two months digesting Edelman's Neural Darwinism, thanks to a request from Science to write a book review that explained it all. I said that Neural Darwinism was essential reading (and it still is) for anyone interested in brains and development' (Calvin in 'Partitioning the Playfield', Chapter 6 of his The Cerebral Code: Thinking a Thought in the Mosaics of the Mind (Cambridge & London: MIT Press, 1996). 'Dr. Edelman has formulated a detailed theory to explain the development and organization of higher brain functions in terms of a process known as neuronal group selection. This theory was presented in his 1987 volume Neural Darwinism, a widely known work' (Nobel Foundation Web site). The recipient Baker is probably a physician at Massachusetts General Hospital: see video at www [dot] webofstories [dot] com/play/gerald.edelman/5 ‘When I got there I remember talking to a physician Bill Baker, who was in the room the first time, and I said, 'Bill, why did you ask me about a cyclotron?' He said, 'Oh, I ran out of questions and I just sort of thought, well, you know, try something.' And I said, 'Well, that's amazing because I couldn't answer most of your questions.' He said, 'That wasn't the important thing; it was the style of your response' ‘ (transcript). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Frontispiece by Rigby Graham, 3 illustrations to the text, original etching of the frontispiece illustration, signed in pencil and numbered by Graham in end-pocket. Raffish bookdealers in pursuit of the ultimate Sherlock Holmes rarity collide across time with the final collapse into insanity of Sir William Withey Gull, Queen Victoria's surgeon, "identified" by Stephen Knight in Jack the Ripper: The Final Solution as the knifeman on the Jack the Ripper team. This is no. 33 of a limited edition of 100 copies only, plus copies I-X for the author, so stated. This is a bilingual edition in Polish and in German. Translated into German by Karl Dedecius. The artist is Stasys Eidrigevicius. Complete in a three-part custom portfolio plus slipcase. 12.25 x 9.75 inches. The left side of the portfolio with 9 poems in the original Polish bound in, the center with 8 original etchings bound in, and the right side with 9 poems in German translation. Also with colophon pages in Polish and German. The portfolio of beige linen [or linen-like] cloth, immensely clean and with sharp corners. Each of the three panels of the portfolio screenprinted with a large facsimile of the signatures of the poet, artist and translator, respectively. As called for, there are eight original etchings of copperplate and aquatint. The etchings pulled on ecru, heavy-duty card stock, apparently produced in Poland. On average each plate measures 5.75 x 4.75 inches. Most plates in gray-scale and a few with subtle tones of blue or brown added. Each of the etchings is apparently signed [genuineness not guaranteed] in light pencil by the artist, just below the impression. All pages, including text and plates, exceptionally clean. We can find no demerits. Lovely custom full-pictorial slipcase, bound in gray cloth stamped in black and white. The featured silkscreen by the artist consists of the wrap-around design on the slipcase. Slipcase with just a trace of soiling/browning to the rear board. A Fine copy in a Near Fine slipcase. Rare in any condition. Czeslaw Milosz [1911-2004] was a Lithuanian-born "Polish poet, prose writer, translator and diplomat. His World War II-era sequence The World is a collection of twenty 'naïve' poems. Following the war, he served as Polish cultural attaché in Paris and Washington, D.C., then in 1951 defected to the West. His nonfiction book The Captive Mind (1953) became a classic of anti-Stalinism. From 1961 to 1998 he was a professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1978 he was awarded the Neustadt International Prize for Literature, and in 1980 the Nobel Prize in Literature." Stasys Eidrigevicius [b.1949] is a painter and graphic artist. "Lithuanian-born, Polish-based Stasys is an artist of popular taste who values expression over intellectual constructs. His art has a faux-naif, humorous flavour in its reductionist qualities, superimposing itself over the romantic notion of art as a metronome registering the 'vibrations of the soul'. Stasys' works often depict single figures, who sometimes carry simple domestic implements or furniture; their distorted physiognomies are veiled with a fan, a pair of slippers, or a basket covering the head."          Jackie Joyner Kersee

      - 11 x 14-inch silver gelatin print by the important American photographer celebrated for his work in fashion and for his portraits often in the style of classical Greek sculpture. This image is of Olympic athlete Jackie Joyner Kersee, taken in 1987 at Point Dume, California. Blind-stamped by Herb Ritts, lower right. One of the prints sent to Rolling Stone for their 1988 article on her, an alternate of Ritts' famous image of Joyner-Kersee running on the sand with her own shadow. Printed on a warm tone paper, it has been taken with Ritts' trademark shutter drag, slightly blurred effect, typical of many of his beach shots. Being a working print, there are some imperfections from being handled by the magazine, including a small bend on the top right corner and some mounting remnants on verso and recto upper edge, none affecting the image area.

         Antonin Artaud

Oeuvre originale

Ideal Book or The Book Beautiful (Cadenza Reprints on Typography No. 4) [CUSTOM BINDING - David Sellars]

London: Cadenza Press, 1987. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. 16mo - over 5" - 6" tall. 20 p. Custom binding by David Sellars, Designer Bookbinder (1949-2015), based out of Great Britain. David was awarded a Fellowship of Designer Bookbinders in the mid seventies and served as President of the society for four years; his bindings are represented in most major libraries in the world and many private collections. This binding is almost in counterpoint to the book itself; for Cobden-Sanderson's essay on "The Book Beautiful" David designed a binding reminiscent of roughly-hewn boards, with small jewel-toned dots in the middle of both boards and on the book's edges, contained within a case of even rougher hew.***DESCRIPTION: Leather spine with the author's initials lettered in gold in blindstamped circles; textured handmade paper over wooden boards, leather collage stripe on both covers; board and paper edges stained black with impressed colored circles; painted endpapers; custom tray and slipcase with matching textured handmade paper, title and colophon pages in red and black; 16 mo size (approximately 6.25" tall), unpaginated with 10 leaves, paper Chilham hand-made from the Hayle Mill, Bembo type; limited edition of "about 100 copies", unnumbered; designer binding by David Sellars, signed and dated 1988, in pencil on a rear flyleaf.***CONDITION: Fine; the binding perfect, without blemish; the interior pages clean, bright, free of prior owner markings - as new.***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details.***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.          The Dream, copy #35 of 500, a pristine copy still sealed in the original publisher's shrink wrap

Contoocook, New Hampshire: Churchill Literary Foundation, 1987. First, Limited, and Numbered Edition. Full leather. This is the first book publication, the finely bound limited first edition, copy #35 of 500 hand-numbered copies. This is the only copy we have offered still sealed in the publisher's shrinkwrap. A scrap of paper laid on the rear cover beneath the shrinkwrap is hand-numbered “35”; we presume to the point of near-certainty that this indicates the limitation number. The new owner can remove the shrinkwrap to confirm; we won't! Condition is pristine. The Dream is Churchill's revealing essay about a ghostly reunion with his father, Lord Randolph Churchill, in which Winston recounts the world events that have transpired since his father's death - without revealing his own role in them. Winston Churchill's father, Lord Randolph, died in January 1895 at age 45 following the spectacular collapse of both his health and political career. His son Winston was 20 years old. A few years later, Churchill would seek permission to write his father's biography and then spend two and a half years researching and writing - a major literary effort, but apparently an emotional one as well. Of the work, Churchill wrote to Lord Rosebery on 11 September 1902 "It is all most interesting to me - and melancholy too" (R. Churchill, WSC, Companion Volume II, Part 1, p.438). Of course history and longevity would dramatically favor the son, but when Randolph died, Winston dwelt very much in his father's shadow, both emotionally and in terms of the political career to which he already aspired. It is in this small, intimate piece of writing that we catch Churchill with that shadow on the eve of his 73rd birthday. According to Churchill, a "foggy afternoon in November 1947" found him in his "studio at the cottage down the hill at Chartwell" attempting to paint a copy of a damaged portrait of Lord Randolph when he turned around to find his father sitting in a red leather armchair, looking just as Churchill "had seen him in his prime." What ensued was a conversation about what had - and had not - changed since Randolph's time, ranging from trivialities and individual personalities to politics and the broad sweep of world affairs. Churchill, of course, never reveals his role in much of this history. Churchill's summary observations and appraisals to his father make a worthwhile study in themselves. But these are perhaps overshadowed by the emotional overtones which psychologists and sentimentalists will doubtless continue to parse for years to come. His family called it "The Dream." Churchill titled it simply "Private Article." Though he was seldom stinting with his words or their publication, Churchill locked the essay in a box where it remained, willed to his wife. Churchill died on 24 January 1965 - the same day his father died seventy years before. The Dream was first published a year after Churchill's death, on 30 January 1966, in the Sunday Telegraph and was subsequently included in The Collected Essays of Sir Winston Churchill (1976). However, The Dream was not published in book form until September 1987, four decades after it was written and more than 22 years after Churchill's death. Fortunately, the edition rose to the occasion of the long wait. Richard Langworth of the International Churchill Society presided over a lovely limited edition of 500 hand-numbered copies. This was an elaborate production, printed on acid-free archival paper and bound in padded red leather with gilt decoration and the Churchill arms blind stamped on the front cover. All page edges are gilt, with head and foot bands, as well as a satin page marker and silk endpapers. Langworth contributed a worthy Foreword and Sal Asaro a color illustration from an oil painting commissioned by the publishers. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A288.1, Woods/ICS A147, Langworth p.357

Prairie Dunes: The First Fifty Years 1937-1987

Prairie Dunes Country Club, Hutchinson, Kansas 1987 - A magnificent copy of the 1987 1st edition, essentially constituting an archive of not only this book's publication but of the construction of the club in the mid 30s. WARMLY INSCRIBED BY THE BOOK'S PRINCIPAL RESEARCHER AND AUTHOR BOB GILLILAND TO DOUG LA RUE SMITH, THE ESTIMABLE HISTORIAN FOR MANY YEARS AT WINGED FOOT IN MAMARONECK, NY. It also includes a number of letters (both handwritten and typed) from Bob Gilliland to Doug La Rue Smith, thanking Doug for his input and keeping him apprised of the book's progress. (And a signed 4 pg. letter also from Doug Smith to Bob Gilliland). Additionally, this copy includes 2 original 8" x 10" black-and-white photos documenting the construction of Prairie Dunes in 1936. And, finally, a beautiful copy of the book itself: crisp and Near Fine in its dark-green cloth, with bright gilt-lettering and design at the front panel and spine. A very nice --and uncommon-- piece of golf history. And a nice linking of 2 of America's greatest courses, Prairie Dune and Winged Foot. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
