        Lovejoy. Excerpts from a Memoir. A Commentary and Etchings by Bruce Chandler with an Epilogue by Anthony Lewis

      The Heron Press Boston: The Heron Press. 1988. First Edition, one of 115 copies each signed by the author / artist, Bruce Chandler, and Anthony Lewis. Page size: 15-1/2 inches x 11-1/4 inches . Illustrated with eight etchings, most of them drypoints, some with aquatint and lift ground, one double page, by Chandler, who also editioned them. The text, set in Monotype Janson, was printed by Dan Keleher. Woodtype of the period was used for the title page. Bound by Harcourt Bindery: 1/4 blue morocco and blue linen over boards, in tan linen clamshell box; the deluxe copy loose in 1/2 morocco clamshell box, fine. The Reverend Elijah P. Lovejoy, called by John Quincy Adams "the first American Martyr to the Freedom of the Press & the Freedom of the Slave," was a native of Maine and graduate of Colby College. He settled in St. Louis, MO in 1827 where he founded a school modeled on the New England classical school. He then bought an interest in the St. Louis Times, becoming Editor and Publisher. In 1832 after undergoing a religious conversion he went to Princeton Theological Seminary. In 1833, with a license to preach the gospel as a Presbyterian minister, he returned to St. Louis to start a new religious newspaper, the St. Louis Observer. He immediately started writing against slavery and was attacked by a local mob, his press being thrown into the Mississippi. this happened three more times. Each time Lovejoy resumed his publishing crusade. However, on November 7, 1837, the mob would not be denied. Lovejoy was shot and his press destroyed. Lovejoy has been a subject of interest to scholars of the Abolition Movement since that time, resulting in several works including Senator Paul Simon's LOVEJOY, MARTYR TO FREEDOM. Bruce Chandler has written the text, using excerpts from the family MEMOIR, published in 1838, Lovejoy's own abolitionist titles, his letters to his family, as well as more recent biographies. The telling of Lovejoy's bravery and commitment in both pictures and works, reprinting Lovejoy's own articles and family letters, is beautifully done. The etchings are dark and menacing; the text firm and clear. This is a thoughtfully produced hommage to freedom of the press -- an important story retold and interpreted by one of this country's fine book artists. See an Image.

One of 50 numbered copies (of 55) printed on velin d'Arches, with the gravures printed on "papier à la forme du Moulin Richard de Bas." Each plate is initialed in the margin by the artist, who has also signed and numbered the colophon.

Donald Conroy, the author's father and the model for "The Great Santini," and with a page of the manuscript of the new introduction tipped-in. According to the publisher, despite the stated limitation, only about 15 were produced. The author's first book, the original edition was published in 1970. This issue is rare. Although not marked in any way, this copy is from the distinguished modern first edition collection of Bruce Kahn. .

        Love in the Time of Cholera

      NY: Knopf. 1988. The limited edition, bound on special paper, with decorated acetate dust jacket in decorated slipcase. One of 350 copies signed by the author. His first signed limited edition, and a noteworthy signature as the author was at first prohibited from entering the U.S. because of his associations with Cuban leader Fidel Castro, and later, even after the prohibition was conditionally rescinded, he refused to enter this country on principle. Consequently, his signature is scarce. This edition, which was to have been published simultaneously with the trade edition, was delayed by several weeks due to the logistical difficulties involved with getting sheets to the author for signing, and then back to the U.S. for binding.       N.Y.: Whitney Museum of American Art, 1988, 1st Edition, 1st Printing ----------hardcover, a Fine unread copy in a Near Fine/ Fine custom made clamshell slipcase (not issued with this production but strongly recommended by The Whitney Museum as a safe harbour for this unique piece), book is approx. 19 x 13 inches, a stunning production and missing from many KING collections, bound in aluminum with a red leather spine, digital clock mounted in the front aluminum panel (battery has run down but can be easily replaced), one of 280 copies, signed by KING and KRUGER, 100 copies were reserved for patrons of the museum, 150 copies were offered for sale, 30 Roman numeraled copies were reserved for family and friends, this is one of the 150 copies edition, when this tome was issued purchasers were given information about caring for the book with the recommendation (certainly a strong suggestion) that the buyer might want to have a custom case made for the book, the company BOOKLAB INC, was recommended for this, this copy DOES HAVE the custom clam-shell tray case designed and produced by BookLab Inc., the case is Near Fine/Fine and is a perfect holder for this massive, weighty book, this copy also has the original BookLab letter and order form for this traycase, that letter states: "A handsome drop-spine box was made to house (this) volume. The box is covered in two tones of grey, with grey tweed book cloth on the case and steel grey fabric on the walls. The title is stamped in silver on the red leather spine label. The interior is lined in steel gray (cloth), and the entire ensemble harmonizes with the book in color and style. ---", As well, a letter (and a catalogue for BL Inc) (both in a Whitney Museum envelope) is included on how to care for the book, including care for the aluminum covers and how to change the battery in the clock, this letter also states that the interleaving protective sheets between the illustrations and the text can be removed ---"in 1990 when the ink is fully dry"---, of course the lithographs were dry but the interleaves were only there for "just-in-case" protection to protect from any potential bleeding of inks, this copy has NOT had the interleaf protectors removed, so this copy is as issued, additional images are available, hard to imagine a nicer, more complete copy, (and finally, this is in the original shipping box for the traycase ---just a cardboard box with packing but it is what the traycase was shipped in when ordered ), any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo.         INSCRIBED COPY of What Mad Pursuit and Additional Signed Letter Archive

An archive of material containing several signed letters from Crick to Meyer Friedman of the Meyer Friedman Institute as well as an inscribed copy of Crick's book, What Mad Pursuit. Francis Crick presented Friedman with an inscribed copy of his book What Mad Pursuit in October 1988. Friedman sent Crick a check for the book, which Crick signed (a note from Friedman to that effect is included in the archive). Several years later, Friedman in 1993 approached Crick attempting to learn about reprints of his 1953 paper. In 1997, Friedman asked and received permission from Crick to pubish a photograph of Crick in his book, "Medicine's Ten Most Significant Discoveries". 2 letters signed by Crick note these events. The specifics of the archive follow with a brief history. Crick, Francis, WHAT MAD PURSUIT: A Personal View of Scientific Discovery, Basic Books: New York, 1988, First edition. INSCRIBED by Crick to Meyer Friedman of the Meyer Friedman Institute. WITH several SIGNED letters and a SIGNED check. Today the term DNA is a household word, a word we associate with the continued battle against disease, the continuing understanding of our own workings as a human machine, and to those of us who are interested in the seminal inventions of the 20th century, with the Giants who discovered DNA: Francis Crick, James Watson, Rosalind Franklin and RG Gosling. Watson, Crick, and Wilkins were awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1962 for their discoveries concerning the molecular structure of nuclear acids and its significance for information transfer in living material. What Mad Pursuit contains Francis Crick's account of that remarkable journey, and it gives us a rather personal window into the man. This particular copy is INSCRIBED to Meyer Friedman, who is probably best known as the co-developer the theory of the "Type A" behavior, and who opened up the field of inquiry into the mind-heart (or mind-body) connection that has also became a part of our popular culture. It is a fascinating connection between 2 scientists. One who is looking at the macro or "top-down" world of how we work as humans, and the other who is looking at the micro, or "inside-out" way of how we work as humans. This archive includes several letters SIGNED by Crick to Friedman. The book is inscribed to Friedman in 1988, and was given to Friedman by Crick. The archive includes a note Friedman wrote indicating he afterward sent Crick a check for the cost of the book: "I admit I also sent him the check to get his signature on its reverse side. I was fortunate." The signed check is also included. 2 further letters between Crick and Friedman are included in the archive. The first from 1993 is responding to a query by Friedman about reprints of his 1953 paper. The second grants permission to Friedman to publish Cricks photograph in a book Medicine's Ten Most Significant Discoveries. In all, 5 pieces (with 4 signatures by Crick). What Mad Pursuit is very good in dj, noting some spine slant, what appears to be a coffee stain on the fore-edge, and sun-fading to the dj in several places. A small fine black ink mark on p. 69 with very short related note inked on rear endpaper (both from Friedman). The 2 letters from Crick are Fine noting the usual folds for mailing. Friedman's note is very good and the check is good with a paperclip indentation through Crick's signature. A nice archive, and worthy of addition to any strong collection of 20th century medicine. Very Good.

Illustrated with original wood engravings by Sarah Chamberlain, who also signed the book. An extra set of fourteen signed wood engravings and an original watercolor of a partly opened rose are also enclosed. Bound by the Green Dragon Bindery in violet leather, with a rose inlaid on the front cover in two colors and with pink suede doublures. A.e.g. Pink suede and marbled-paper clamshell box.       Fullerton, CA: Stone & Lorson, 1988. Folio. iv,9 ff. One of 50 copies designed and bound by Joseph D'Ambrosio, signed by him, Carolyn Johnson, and Carmen Voss, the handcolorist. This twentieth-century leaf book contains a leaf from Act II scene one, from a portfolio edition of John R. Wise's poem "The First of May," illustrated and designed by Walter Crane (London, Sotheran, 1881). Crane's drawings, layout, and his lettering of the text were done in pencil, and printed in Paris. Sotheran's proudly announced "The process adopted has been the Photo-gravure of Messrs Goupil & Co., a process well-known to Artists for its absolute faithfulness and exquisite softness, but hitherto comparatively unknown to the general public." The Walter Crane plates were handcolored by Carmen Voss. The unbound leaves are laid-into a linen clamshell box designed by D'Ambrosio to serve as a frame for the leaf, with a plexiglass panel and gold leaf inserts. Very light soiling to linen, else very fine.

        Original Drawing

      1988. An original drawing by Wilson for William Burroughs&#39; book Tornado Alley. This image was included in the exhibition "Ports of Entry: William Burroughs and the Arts" that was mounted by the Los Angeles Country Museum of Art in 1996, and it is reproduced on page 140 of the exhibition catalog. Interestingly, the illustration in the book does not show some of the work that Wilson did, as it was done using nonrepro blue pencil which does not show up when photographed: Wilson&#39;s edits didn&#39;t appear in Tornado Alley and they don&#39;t appear in Ports of Entry but they are quite visible in the work itself. Wilson, one of the great artists of the underground comix of the 1960s and beyond, whom R. Crumb has said was a major influence on Crumb&#39;s own work, collaborated with Burroughs on a number of projects. This is not only a significant work of art, and a significant association with Burroughs, but it is also signed by Wilson, who has added, "To Nelson" next to his signature: Wilson gave this work to his friend Nelson Lyon, who loaned it to the exhibition and is listed in the book as one of the lenders to the exhibit. This is, in effect, a three-way association: Nelson Lyon was the co-producer of Burroughs&#39;s Dead City Radio, an album of Burroughs reading his work against a background of experimental music by various artists. 9-3/4" x 6-3/4".         The Lagrangian in Quantum Mechanics.Charkow: Technischer Staatsverlag, 1933. First edition.

      Extremely rare offprint of this seminal paper which, in the hands of Richard Feynman, gave birth to the path-integral formulation of quantum mechanics and Feynman integrals.<br/><br/> "Since Richard Feynman's death in 1988 it has become increasingly clear that he was one of the most brilliant and original physicists of the twentieth century. The Nobel Prize in Physics for 1965, shared with Julian Schwinger and Sin-itiro Tomonaga, rewarded their independent path-breaking work on the renormalization theory of quantum electrodynamics (QED). Feynman based his own formulation of a consistent QED, free of meaningless infinities, upon the work in his doctoral thesis of 1942 at Princeton University... His new approach to quantum theory made use of the Principle of Least Action and led to methods for the very accurate calculation of quantum electromagnetic processes, as amply confirmed by experiment. These methods rely on the famous 'Feynman diagrams,' derived originally from the path integrals, which fill the pages of many articles and textbooks. Applied first to QED, the diagrams and the renormalization procedure based upon them also play a major role in other quantum field theories, including gravity and the current 'Standard Model' of elementary particle physics" (Brown, p. vii). <br/><br/> "The essential parts of his thesis were published in 1948 in his paper 'Space-time approach to non-relativistic quantum mechanics'. The Feynman path-integral approach to quantum mechanics was on a par with the formulations of M. Born, W. Heisenberg and P. Jordan, P.A.M. Dirac, and E. Schrödinger of 1925-26. Feynman had developed the path-integral formulation of quantum mechanics to quantize the action-at-a-distance theory of the classical electron and thus to avoid problems arising in field theory from the self-interaction of the electron. The methods of quantization associated with the work of Heisenberg, Schrödinger and Dirac all began with the Hamiltonian function as the generator of the evolution of the system with time, whereas the classical action-at-a-distance theory employed a classical action principle based on the Lagrangian. This involved the interaction of two currents, each a function of an independent space-time variable. In his Nobel Lecture, Feynman described how he discovered [in the present paper] (with the help of Herbert Jehle) an infinitesimal time development operator of Dirac involving the classical Lagrangian. Successive applications of this operator to the initial wave function generated the wave function at any later time, and the wave function was equivalent to finding the solution of the Schrödinger equation. To obtain the wave function after a finite time has elapsed, however, one had to integrate over all possible paths containing two arbitrary space-time points. This, in fact, was the path-integral approach of Feynman" (Biogr. Mems Fell. R. Soc.Lond. 48 (2002), p. 107). <br/><br/> "In the autumn of 1932, [Dirac] found another way of [developing quantum mechanics by analogy with classical mechanics], by generalising the property of classical physics that enables the path of any object to be calculated, regardless of the nature of the forces acting on it.<br/><br/> "[At the heart of this technique are two quantities.] The first, known as the Lagrangian, is the difference between an object's energy of motion and the energy it has by virtue of its location. The second, the so-called 'action' associated with the object's path, is calculated by adding the values of the Lagrangian from the beginning of the path to its end. In classical physics, the path taken by any object between two points in any specified time interval turns out... to be the one corresponding to the smallest value of the 'action'... <br/><br/> "Dirac thought that the concept of 'action' might be just as important in the quantum world of electrons and atomic nuclei as it is in the large-scale domain. When he generalised the idea to quantum mechanics, he found that a quantum particle has not just one path available to it but an infinite number, and they are - loosely speaking - centred around the path predicted by classical mechanics. He also found a way of taking into account all the paths available to the particle to calculate the probability that the quantum particle moves from one place to another... <br/><br/> "Normally, he would submit a paper like this to a British journal, such as the Proceedings of the Royal Society, but this time he chose to demonstrate his support for Soviet physics by sending the paper to a new Soviet journal... Dirac was quietly pleased with his 'little paper' and wrote in early November to one of his colleagues in Russia: 'It appears that all the important things in the classical [...] treatment can be taken over, perhaps in a rather disguised form, into the quantum theory'" (Farmelo, pp. 215-6). <br/><br/> G. No. 48 of 60 copies, signed by the author and illustrator. Fine copy. Not in OCLC or RLIN. Anne Walker is a native New Englander, who emigrated to France in 1955 after graduating from Smith College. She took up woodcuts in 1956 in Paris, and etching and aquatint in 1968. She began making gouache and pastel books in 1989, turning away from printmaking. She has had exhibitions in Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, and the United States. Walker explains her transition from the precision of printmaking to the more abstract techniques she uses in her gouache and pastel books as a change in her world view. Her initial attraction to printmaking "was a way of creating stability using solid materials that supposed a contained and precise technique that was reassuring in itself. Once released from this need because of being able to accept (more or less) that the world will always be a fragile place to live in, I feel freer and happier with what I am doing now." Many of Walker's books are closely associated with poetry. She has worked with contemporary poets, often asking them to hand-letter their poems into her books, and she has used poems from late poets such as Emily Dickinson, Wallace Stevens, Thoreau, and William Carlos Williams. If the poet is no longer living, or if a contemporary prefers not to write in the book themselves, she uses a simple calligraphy, so that the writing remains visually neutral.
