THE BIRDS OF NEW GUINEA and the Adjacent Papuan Islands, including Many New Species Recently Discovered in Australia Volume I (one) [Birds of Paradise]

Melbourne: Hill House, 1988. Completed after the author?'s death by R. Bowlder Sharpe. Limited facsimile edition, (this copy stamped no. 565 to the front paste-down). Original red Japanese Saifu cloth gilt; pp. [iv], iii plus 56 fine coloured plates with accompanying text (inc. cucckoo-shrikes, fairy-wrens, flycatchers and others). One of series of remarkably exact same-size facsimile of the original in the British Library, printed by offset lithography on acid-free matt art paper and hand-bound. The Hill House series contained the only authentic full-size facsimiles of the works of John Gould - this volume is one of the original printings and now out of print. Binding fine, contents clean and tight, unmarked. A fine copy. Publisher's blurb thus "They are not reproductions, because no camera was used in transferring the images from the B.M.(N.H.) originals. Indeed the originals are taken by Museum security courier to the repro-house in Singapore, where they are subjected to the preparation of new plates for printing on 5 and 6 colour offset presses. The paper used is 130 gsm mat art paper. As facsimiles, the books carry faithfully every spot, mark or stain of the originals. They also carry the original Museum Department of Zoology stamps, and librarian's annotations. From behind glass, the naked eye would be unable to distinguish the original from the facsimile, so accurate is the colour printing. Also as facsimiles, they are exactly the same size as the originals (Imperial Folio: 22" x 15"). Each volume is hand sewn, cased-in and bound between 4 mm. gilt stamped on the spine, and with the gold Crown Cipher of the British Museum (Natural History) on the front, and blind embossed on the inner margin of the front boards. The end-papers are of special wood-free heavy grade paper, printed in a generated repetitive pattern of the Museum's Library stamps. The publisher has not intruded into the authenticity of the books, leaving the publication data printed only on the very last page at the end of the book block. Each copy is hand inspected by the printer's quality control officer, individually numbered on the inside front board. Thus, no two copies are exactly the same. Although initial volumes were printed in more than 500 copies, later production runs have not exceeded 300 for world-wide sale. This has been caused by a relative shortage of quality paper, together with the intensive hand-labour involved in their production." This book is held in stock.. Facsimile Edition. Hardcover. Fine/No Dust Jacket. Elephant Folio.

        TILT: the black-flagged streets

London, England:: Ken Campbell,, 1988.. Edition of 80. 12 x 9"; 62 unnumbered pages. Letterpress composed of Albertus type, found lino blocks, and handmade zinc blocks. Many passes including metallic dusting and handwork. Bound with black cloth spine and decorative paper boards in trapezoid shape. In printed slipcase. Ken Campbell, The Maker's Hand, Twenty books: "'Tilt' was the widest-cast net so far, bringing the most disparate things together. I wrote a poem called Storm Song in Canada in 1981, after listening to a sung account of a maritime disaster on one of the Great Lakes (The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, I think it was). I also had in mind the vertiginous steps of flagstones up to the old cathedral at Whitby and the black flag of anarchy and disturbance. I had found some old mounted lino blocks which were random-sized squares, black flags of different sizes, and some Albertus type, rather beaten up. "While in Zürich I walked into the Museum Rietberg and up to a statue of Shiva, with limbs hanging out in funny angles, and lightning in his/her hair, all in a big wheel of fire. I can remember the statue saying to me, I'm coming into your book. I thought, what the hell has Shiva got to do with this book about a Storm Song and the Whitby steps and black flags? And I thought, well, I'll do as I'm told, as ever. The following morning at breakfast I drew the figure of Shiva, with breasts, and realised it was a puppet that I was going to dismantle. I made a puppet out of zinc pieces; it is disassembled from the right-hand page by repeatedly having a piece of its body nominated by a decorative silver star. Each piece is removed and replaced on the left-hand page. Alongside this cycle of nomination, removal and redisposition, the poem accumulates line by line. In this way Shiva is removed from the wheel of fire of the material world on the right, and repositioned and rebuilt in a calmer place on the left. "Each new line of the poem is revealed between black flags, the flags being arranged to suit the disposition of the line that they enclose. A decorative border is used to re-affirm the rectilinear nature of the page to counter what I did to the cover, which was to make it tilted and disturbed. "A line in the poem refers to 'the kingly fisher of men.' A Christ or Osiris figure perhaps, but I discovered that Halcyon, the kingfisher, mythically made its nest on stormy waters, thus calming them. This seemed to complete the circle proposed by the poem. "I also discovered, as an act of necessity, an odd process which I have called offset letterpress. To enable a previously printed coloured element to show better through a recently-applied dark solid, I immediately ran the wet page through the press again after having wiped the solid plate clean. This removed ink from where it sat on the underlying image but not from where it was sitting in the virgin paper. "The statue of Shiva that spoke to me had, unbeknownst to me at the time, been a childhood obsession of our Zurich hostess. The statue in the Museum Rietberg was accompanied by a dancing girl, who appears at each end of this book.

Unpaginated (100 pp.), with 43 black-and-white plates beautifully printed on heavy coated paper by Mitsumura Printing Co., Ltd., Japan. 10-1/8 x 13-1/4 inches. Published on the occasion of the 1988 exhibition "Hiroshi Sugimoto" at Sonnabend Gallery, New York, Sagacho Exhibit Space, Tokyo and Zeito Photo Salon, Tokyo. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket (1/2-inch bump to the front lower right corner affecting the dust jacket, front cover and pages only, not affecting the plates; light abrasions to the extremities, else Fine). Sugimoto's first monograph, this exhibition catalogue introduced readers to the three most significant bodies of work he has produced since the late-1970s.From the artist (on Dioramas): "Upon first arriving in New York in 1974, I did the tourist thing. Eventually I visited the Natural History Museum, where I made a curious discovery: the stuffed animals positioned before painted backdrops looked utterly fake, yet by taking a quick peek with one eye closed, all perspective vanished, and suddenly they looked very real. I'd found a way to see the world as a camera does. However fake the subject, once photographed, it's as good as real."On Theaters: "I'm a habitual self-interlocutor. Around the time I started photographing at the Natural History Museum, one evening I had a near-hallucinatory vision. The question-and-answer session that led up to this vision went something like this: Suppose you shoot a whole movie in a single frame? And the answer: You get a shining screen. Immediately I sprang into action, experimenting toward realizing this vision. Dressed up as a tourist, I walked into a cheap cinema in the East Village with a large-format camera. As soon as the movie started, I fixed the shutter at a wide-open aperture, and two hours later when the movie finished, I clicked the shutter closed. That evening, I developed the film, and the vision exploded behind my eyes."On Seascapes: "Water and air. So very commonplace are these substances, they hardly attract attention -- and yet they vouchsafe our very existence. The beginnings of life are shrouded in myth: Let there be water and air. Living phenomena spontaneously generated from water and air in the presence of light, though that could just as easily suggest random coincidence as a Deity. Let's just say that there happened to be a planet with water and air in our solar system, and moreover at precisely the right distance from the sun for the temperatures required to coax forth life. While hardly inconceivable that at least one such planet should exist in the vast reaches of universe, we search in vain for another similar example. Mystery of mysteries, water and air are right there before us in the sea. Every time I view the sea, I feel a calming sense of security, as if visiting my ancestral home; I embark on a voyage of seeing." Signed by Author.         Glyptotek

1988. DINE, Jim. Glyptotek. Illustrated with 40 intaglio prints from copper plates by Jim Dine, plus a title-page print. Elephant folio, 682 x 530 mm, bound in original publisher's cloth, in original slipcase. New York and London: Pace Editions and Waddington Graphics, 1988. |~||~||~||~||~| One of 90 copies, signed by Jim Dine. The intaglio plates are Dine's interpretations of the classical sculpture in the Glyptotek (i.e. "Sculpture Museum") in Munich, and represent some of Dine's most skillful graphic work in intaglio. "These are not academic studies of stone sculptures. Rather than recording them as ancient carvings, through his graphic transformation Dine willed them back to their original state of living beings... The urgency of the line, the exaggerated tonal variations, the large scale, and the obvious link to the great monuments in Western art history result in an expressive power that hits the viewer with full force" (Feinberg, Dine, p. 87). Printed on Zirkall Litho paper, with letterpress by Alan Kitching, of Omnific (London). The plates were editioned by Kurt Zein (Vienna) and the binding and slipcase were executed by Pella Erskine-Tulloch and Jane Rollo, Bookworks (London). Preface by the artist with a poem by him (after Sappho). In mint condition.
