        DOCUMENT - Signed

Laguna Beach, California 1988 - Canceled check from Buzz Aldrin's personal checking account. It is dated August 26, 1988 and is made out to San Diego Gas & Elect. for the amount of $18.26. Check has been signed "Buzz Aldrin" in black ink. Remainder of the check has been filled out in another hand. Buzz Aldrin was born in Montclair, New Jersey on January 20, 1930. He was educated at West Point, graduating with honors in 1951, third in his class. After receiving his wings, he flew Sabre Jets in 66 combat missions in the Korean Conflict, shooting down two MIG-15's. Returning to his education, he earned a Doctorate in Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Manned Space Rendezvous. The techniques he devised were used on all NASA missions, including the first space docking with the Russian Cosmonauts. In October 1963, Aldrin was selected by NASA as one of the early astronauts. In November 1966, he established a new record for Extra- Vehicular Activity in space on the Gemini XII orbital flight mission. He has logged 4500 hours of flying time, 290 of which were in space, including 8 hours of EVA. As Backup Command Module Pilot for Apollo VIII, man's first flight around the moon, Buzz significantly improved operational techniques for astronautical navigation star display. Then, on July 20, 1969, Buzz and Neil Armstrong made their historic Apollo XI moon walk, thus becoming the first two humans to set foot on another world. This unprecedented heroic endeavor was witnessed by the largest worldwide television audience in history. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        Heart Throbs

Long Beach, California:: Terry Braunstein,, 1988.. One-of-a-Kind. 5 x 7.5" altered book. Original book: Heart Throbs (Boston: The Chopple Publishing Company, LTD, n.d.). Using collage plus cutting and gluing, Braunstein creates three spreads containing a series of dramatic spaces — including a shadow box and several shallow windows — wherein she sets tableaux playing with the concept of romantic fixation.Noriko Gamblin, Curator, Long Beach Museum of Art: "There are no ready answers to the questions Terry Braunstein poses, and no promise of a resolution forthcoming. In fact, there seem only to be more questions, and more cross-references. By importing the loaded content of mass media imagery into her artistic landscape, she not only challenges the assumptions implicit in contemporary culture but also addresses one of the aesthetic dilemmas: the interpretive gap between appearance and truth.

        The Piano Teacher.

Weidenfeld & Nicolson, New York 1988 - First American edition of the Nobel Prize-winning author's first book to be translated into English. Octavo, original half cloth. Inscribed and dated by Jelinek on the title page. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Sexuality and violence are coupled in this reveling story set in modern-day Vienna by Elfriedge Jelinek, winner of the Heinrich Boll Prize (1986). It's his first novel to be translated into English, and it won the author the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2004. The Piano Teacher depicts the emotionally rigorous world of Erika, and the neurotic love triangle that confuses violence for love. The inevitable breakdown is an insight beyond what Jelinek saw as the artificial prettiness of Vienna to show a side still reminiscent of its uncomfortable early post-war years. The novel was adapted into a film in 2001, directed by Michael Haneke, and it won numerous awards, including Best Actor and Best Actress at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, and Best Foreign Film at the 2002 German Film Awards.

        WINDJAMMERS

Lorson's Books and Prints, (Fullerton, CA 1988 - folio. book-in-a-box binding: black canvas rear board and spine, blue paper-covered front board, marbled paper box structure and front. not paginated. This is copy number seven. Colophon signed by the designer, printer & binder Joe D'Ambrosio. It was printed using 14pt Della Robbia type on Rives BFK paper. Ingres marbled paper used for the box structure and endpapers. The front board creates a frame shaped like billowing sail. Behind it is French marbled paper with intersecting white cords used to suggest rigging ropes. (A Memoir of Book Design 1969-2000, page 106-107). This book is made from the limited edition plates created in 1973. In 1922, Duncan Gleason (1881-1959) created a series of copper etchings for the etched book Windjammers. Although the publisher planned 325 copies, probably not more than 100 pulls were made from the plates. No other editions or states of these etchings other than the 1973 edition printed at Triad Graphics in a limited edition of 25 numbered impressions. There are no signed or unnumbered impressions other than 10 publishers proofs which are so marked. The edition including the publishers proofs was done on Murillo paper using brown ink. There are a total of 50 trial proofs of various etchings done in black or brown ink and are marked as such. Each etching is impressed with the blind stamp of the Gallery Easel ( from the Certificate of the 1973 edition). Card from Lorson's Books & the certificate of the 1973 edition are laid-in. Case is somewhat faded on spine. book-in-a-box binding: black canvas rear board and spine, blue paper-covered front board, marbled paper box structure and front [Attributes: Signed Copy]
