Holograph revisions to the typescript short story "A High Wind-less Night in Jamaica" by his lover Jane Mason.

Havana (?): n.p., c. mid 1930s. 7 pages quarto, triple-spaced on seven sheets of white paper. Pale brown staining (mostly at left margin of each sheet), rust marks from paper clips, with some pencilled revisions by Jane Mason (one on verso of page 6). Housed in a custom-made dark brown morocco solander box. When Hemingway met Jane Mason she "was the twenty-two-year-old wife of G. Grant Mason, the head of Pan American Airways in Cuba and the owner of a beautifully situated estate in Jaimanitas, west of Havana. With her slender but curvy body and her strawberry blond hair, which she parted in the middle and pulled away from her oval face, she was the most beautiful woman whom Hemingway had ever gone after. A native of Tuxedo Park, New York, and a graduate of Briarcliff, she had made her debut in Washington, D.C., just before her impulsive marriage to Mason. Dancing, drinking, and deep-sea fishing were among her current enthusiasms, and so was pigeon shooting at the Club de Cazadores, a sport in which few other women engaged... Conceivably, [Hemingway] came to think of Jane Mason as his very own Zelda, except that he proposed to make her well by giving her lessons in marlin fishing and by telling her over and over that she wasn't crazy [Mason suffered with manic depression]" (Kenneth S. Lynn, Hemingway, 1987, p.404). With Hemingway's encouragement Jane began writing fiction. In "A High Wind-less Night in Jamaica" (the title echoes Richard Hughes's A High Wind in Jamaica, 1929) she draws upon Hemingway's dictum of "write what you know" and tells the story, from the point of view of an American woman, of a thoroughly unpleasant group of colonial Jamaicans drinking and dancing on a hotel veranda. Hemingway has corrected punctuation, changed verbs, tightened-up phrases, and in general polished the story. His longest revision occurs near the end where Jane has written about her lead character: "I felt strangely sorry for her, despite the fact that in England she was the type who always terrified me, and to whom I am generally rather rude." Hemingway has revised the part in italics to read: "...one would not have felt sorry for her but simply classed her as a bitch without implying any condemnation." The story was submitted to The New Yorker but turned down; it would seem to remain unpublished. On the verso of the first leaf is a pencil sketch of a bearded figure wearing a cap of the type favoured by Hemingway, the face of which is scribbled over, and a sketch of a bare foot.

The Sleeping Beauty. music by.Tschaikovsky. scenery by David Mitchell. costumes by Patricia Lipprodt. based on fairy tales by Charles Perrault. booklet by David Mitchell

      - A handmade book on paper and board, accomplished entirely in watercolor by Mitchell. Folded approximately 9 x 7Ó; the front cover is of a palace at the end of a forest road; on the verso is a closer view of the castle; another leaf is a watercolor of a forest and lettering, ÒLincoln Kirstein. 80th Birthday Celebration. New York City Ballet. May 18, 1987.Ó On the verso is another view of the castle, and in the center a drawing of the palace lettered ÒThe Sleeping Beauty. Act. III. New York City Ballet.Ó These gates open to reveal a drawing of the happy couple, and the entire page lifts up to reveal a complex pop-up of the stage setting of the marriage scene, complete with dancers in costume and ÒPerraultÓ lettered on the floor. Unfolded, this pop-up is placed between watercolors of the castle. The bottom leaf is lettered as in the title above. Aside from some minor smudges on this leaf, in excellent condition. Kirstein, scion of the FileneÕs Boston department store fortune, was a founder of the New York City Ballet. In his honor, the balletÕs intention to mount this production was announced on his birthday, May 4, 1987, although it was not staged until 1991 in a complex presentation involving over 100 dancers. MitchellÕs stage design, of which this was clearly an early conception, was highly praised for its evocative fairy tale setting.

Neural Darwinism: The Theory of Neuronal Group Selection. (PRESENTATION COPY, SIGNED BY GERALD M. EDELMAN.)

New York: Basic Books, 1987. - Signed, presentation copy of the the first printing of the First Edition. xxii, 346 pp; figs.; tables. Original cloth. Offsetting to front flyleaf, else Near Fine, in near fine dust jacket. Inscribed on flyleaf: 'For Bill Baker/with admiration/and warm regards/Gerry.' Gerald M. Edelman: Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, 1972 (shared with Rodney R. Porter), 'for their discoveries concerning the chemical structure of antibodies.' See William H. Calvin's review for Science 240: 1802-1803, 1988, on Calvin's site. 'When chaos theory came along (which, for me, is dated to Otto Rössler's famous paper of 1983), it started to become evident how basins of attraction lived in the connectionists' networks. When complexity theory and artificial life came along on their heels, the possibilities of getting to the bottom of Hebb's dual-trace memory seemed promising. Then in 1988, I spent more than two months digesting Edelman's Neural Darwinism, thanks to a request from Science to write a book review that explained it all. I said that Neural Darwinism was essential reading (and it still is) for anyone interested in brains and development' (Calvin in 'Partitioning the Playfield', Chapter 6 of his The Cerebral Code: Thinking a Thought in the Mosaics of the Mind (Cambridge & London: MIT Press, 1996). 'Dr. Edelman has formulated a detailed theory to explain the development and organization of higher brain functions in terms of a process known as neuronal group selection. This theory was presented in his 1987 volume Neural Darwinism, a widely known work' (Nobel Foundation Web site). The recipient Baker is probably a physician at Massachusetts General Hospital: see video at www [dot] webofstories [dot] com/play/gerald.edelman/5 ‘When I got there I remember talking to a physician Bill Baker, who was in the room the first time, and I said, 'Bill, why did you ask me about a cyclotron?' He said, 'Oh, I ran out of questions and I just sort of thought, well, you know, try something.' And I said, 'Well, that's amazing because I couldn't answer most of your questions.' He said, 'That wasn't the important thing; it was the style of your response' ‘ (transcript). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Jackie Joyner Kersee

      - 11 x 14-inch silver gelatin print by the important American photographer celebrated for his work in fashion and for his portraits often in the style of classical Greek sculpture. This image is of Olympic athlete Jackie Joyner Kersee, taken in 1987 at Point Dume, California. Blind-stamped by Herb Ritts, lower right. One of the prints sent to Rolling Stone for their 1988 article on her, an alternate of Ritts' famous image of Joyner-Kersee running on the sand with her own shadow. Printed on a warm tone paper, it has been taken with Ritts' trademark shutter drag, slightly blurred effect, typical of many of his beach shots. Being a working print, there are some imperfections from being handled by the magazine, including a small bend on the top right corner and some mounting remnants on verso and recto upper edge, none affecting the image area.

Ideal Book or The Book Beautiful (Cadenza Reprints on Typography No. 4) [CUSTOM BINDING - David Sellars]

London: Cadenza Press, 1987. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. 16mo - over 5" - 6" tall. 20 p. Custom binding by David Sellars, Designer Bookbinder (1949-2015), based out of Great Britain.
