         Prova d’artista.

It- SIGNED BY STEPHEN KING- US 1st Edition 1st Print Hardback Book

Viking 1986 - A US 1st Edition 1st Print hardback copy indicated on the copyright page with no further printings mentioned. - THIS COPY HAS BEEN SIGNED DIRECT TO THE HALF-TITLE PAGE BY THE AUTHOR IN BLACK INK WITH NO OTHER INSCRIPTIONS PRESENT. THIS IS ONE OF THE AUTHOR'S MOST FAMOUS WORKS AND HAS BEEN MADE INTO A NEW BLOCKBUSTER FILM. - The book itself is in very good condition. Internally, it has some light brown fingerprint marks to pages 40-43, and a small chip to the edge of page 41. It is otherwise clean without any other tears or inscriptions other than the author's signature. The page block has a few very small stains and is very lightly tanned over time. The page block itself has pulled away from the top of the spine- this is quite common with large books that have been read. The spine cover is creased in the center and there is a light bump to the bottom of the reverse board. - The dust jacket is also in very good condition and has not been price clipped with a price of $22.95 shown to the top of the front flap. Some light surface scratching to the front and back of the jacket, but none of it appears to have pierced the laminate. Both the front and reverse flaps are lightly tanned, and more so to the top. Otherwise a very good complete copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

         The Departure of the Argonaut

(London): Petersburg Press, 1986. Limited Edition. Soft cover. Fine. Clemente, Francesco. No. 98 of 200, total 288, Double Elephant - over 25" - 50" tall, signed by artist Francesco Clemente. In this volume, Clemente has illuminated Alberto Savinio's (1891-1952) autobiographical wartime voyage in 1917. By overlaying words with brightly coloured images and colours, Clemente creates an energy and rhythm to augment the author's expansive musings. Clemente used an considerable range of lithographic techniques including stones, aluminum plates, and acetates. He drew with standard litho crayons and tuesche, but also used graphite and graphite washes, rapidographs and pen and ink, transfer paper and various blotting techniques, achieving a remarkable variety of visual effects (N. B., info from Museum of Modern Art, 1986).***ABOUT THE ARTIST: Acting as a dark shaman of the post-modern era while reacting against the dominance of increasing abstraction in preceding generations, Francesco Clemente (b. 1952) helped reinvigorate painting by using recognizable human figures as his primary subject. In idiosyncratic and arresting images, he uses Neo-Expressionist techniques to represent late twentieth century people and their psychological conditions - fundamentally questioning what is real and what is of value to the human spirit. Clemente depicts many of the darker, unspoken or conflicting psychological aspects of being human, significantly updating earlier art movements of the late modern era, drawing on Surrealism's dream-like extensions and transgressions of ordinary daily life, and building on Expressionism's revelations of interior emotional states (N. B., info from The Art Story).***DESCRIPTION: This volume is beautifully soft-bound in cream Okawara paper with black and red text, includes 61 hand-printed lithographs (46 in colour and 15 in black and white) by Francesco Clemente on cream French-fold Okawara 60 gsm mold made Kozo paper, rough-cut on top and bottom edges; unpaginated, 25.75" tall, signed by artist Francesco Clemente, Limited edition no. 98 of 200, total 288; Translator's Notes laid in; clamshell box bound in cream linen, embossed image on the cover.***CONDITION: Book, Translator's Notes, and box are all in fine condition with no scuffs, markings, or wear; clean and as new, entirely free of prior owner markings.***POSTAGE: Due to size and weight, additional postage will apply; we are happy to ship at cost to both domestic and international customers, please inquire for details.***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.          Eigenh. Brief mit U.

      O. O., 17. VI. 1986. - 1 S. Gr.-4to.

         The Sportswriter

NY: Vintage, (1986). NY: Vintage. (1986). The uncorrected proof copy of his breakthrough book, the first in his Pulitzer Prize-winning Bascombe series. Signed by the author. Published as a paperback original: proofs in the Vintage Contemporaries series seem to have been done in much smaller quantities than those of their counterparts slated for hardcover publication, and seem to have received much more limited distribution: many review venues -- including newspapers and magazines -- have policies precluding the reviewing of paperback publications. Buckle to front spine fold, possibly from binding; very near fine in wrappers. Review slip laid in, asking the reader to disregard "large, unnumbered spaces" on more than a dozen pages, which "will not appear in the finished book." Scarce signed. First Edition. Softcover. Near Fine.

Gerritsen, "Emanuel van Meteren's Commentariën and STC", in: Quaerendo XXX (2000), pp. 35-50; Sloos 12022. Extremely rare last and most complete issue of the 1611 4to edition (incorporating the author's last additions to early 1612) of a cornerstone of Dutch historiography, covering the history of the Low Countries from 1369 to early 1612, with a strong emphasis on contemporary history, especially the Eighty-Years War for Dutch independence from Habsburg Spain: "What the States Bible was for religion and Cats for literature, Van Meteren was for our historiography for a whole century" (Van der Heyden quoting Brummel). Emanuel van Meteren (1535-1612), a Dutch Reformed eye-witness to many of the events, took great care to uncover the facts and present them as objectively as possible, without polemics, something that brought him the wrath of both the Spanish court and the Dutch States General. He also wrote while the war was raging, leading him to continue revising and especially updating his text from the first authorized edition in 1599 to his death in 1612. This combined with the extremely complicated publishing history of his politically controversial book to generate a wide array of editions and issues that still demand further study. The present last and most extensive issue of the 4to edition includes material not found in the earlier editions. Van Meteren's personal note about his approaching death makes it clear that it comes from the author in one way or another, and the events to 17 February 1612, Van Meteren's closing note and the note of his death were included (with somewhat different wording) in the authorised folio edition of 1614 edition. Unfortunately, beginning with that 1614 edition, Van Meteren's work was censored to appease the States General, so the present issue makes important contributions to the history of Van Meteren's text: as far as is known it is the first edition to include his last additions, and the last edition before his work was censored. Typographically, the most remarkable feature of the present edition is the introduction of a new style of textura gothic type that was to set the standard for the Republic's texturas, used at this time for most works in the Dutch language. Most of the book is set in the 16th-century Descendiaen textura cut by Hendrick van den Keere in Ghent. But in volume 1, beginning with 4 pages in quire 2A, a new Descendiaen textura appears , clearly modelled on Van den Keere's but with baroque curls added to several of the letters and a few other distinguishing features. The old and new type appear together not only in the same quire or sheet, but even in the same forme. The printing office apparently acquired the new type while the book was in press but continued using the old one as well. The 6-line note of Van Meteren's 1612 death is set in a slightly larger Mediaen size in the new style, also its earliest known use. These new types of the 1610s served as the models for the textura types of Christoffel van Dijck and directly or indirectly for nearly all textura types of the Dutch Republic up to and including those of Fleischman in the 1740s and beyond. While the book's printer certainly had no symbolic significance in mind, it seems poetically appropriate that he set this great work about the birth of the independent Dutch Republic in the first printing type to establish an independent style for the Dutch golden age. The two title-pages have been interchanged, probably when the binding was revised and repaired. With some browning, a few tears (minor except vol. 2, part 2, 3O2), the running heads of about 4 leaves very slightly shaved and a few minor marginal water stains, but still generally in good condition. The bindings were repaired and revised at an early date, but have since developed some cracks in t

New York Nude, Texas Nude, and Angels

1986 - An intriguing archive from successful photographer-turned-clairvoyant Charles R. Collum presented to science writer and infamous skeptic, Martin Gardner, that includes Inscribed first editions of Collum's two books of nude photography, Dallas Nude (1977), and New York Nude (1981); a four page Typed Letter Signed, including the introduction to his unpublished book on angels; seven photographs, including one of nine angels depicted by model-turned actress Renee Russo; and 19 photocopies of geometric patterns. This package was sent to Gardner in hopes he would affirm Collum's claims of undergoing a "spiritual awakening of incredible magnitude" in 1984 which allowed him to answer life's questions such as "who or what is God?" Overall near fine or better with only very light wear to the dustwrappers of the books. The two published books represented here show Collum's striking black and white nude photographs he took of professionals and ordinary people in both Dallas and New York. The subjects were involved in numerous occupations and include musician Richie Havens, dominatrix Annie Sprinkle, Dallas Metropolitan Opera ballet dancer Steve Crenshaw, celebrity paparazzi Ron Galella, as well as policemen, lawyers, etc. Dallas Nude was published in 1977 and New York Nude was completed in 1981, three years before Collum's decision to take his talents down more spiritual paths.According to Collum's letter, until his "awakening" he was a "successful commercial photographer for 15 years," and had worked for companies such as "Neiman-Marcus, Horchow, Sakowitz, American Express, Macy's, Bloomingdale's, and Bergdorf Goodman." Then in 1984 he switched paths dramatically using his skills to try to discover the truth behind, among other religious inquiries, the phenomena of angels. "I have enclosed some of the graphic presentation of the geometry and mathematics which I have been given," we presume by divine intervention. Collum claims he has discovered the revelation of St. John the Divine, and has the marks on his body to prove it as displayed in the Polaroids he has provided (though none seem present), along with the secrets of the pyramids and Stonehenge."Just as my first two books, Dallas Nude and New York Nude, are celebrations of this temporal physical existence.Angels and my next two books are celebrations of our soul," writes Collum in the Inscription in Dallas Nude. Unfortunately it would seem that Angels and its sequels were never published. An eccentric combination of talent and fervor sent in a passionate attempt to expertly validate a conviction.

B., info from Museum of Modern Art, 1986). ***ABOUT THE ARTIST: Acting as a dark shaman of the post-modern era while reacting against the dominance of increasing abstraction in preceding generations, Francesco Clemente (b. B., info from The Art Story). ***DESCRIPTION: This volume is beautifully soft-bound in cream Okawara paper with black and red text, includes 61 hand-printed lithographs (46 in colour and 15 in black and white) by Francesco Clemente on cream French-fold Okawara 60 gsm mold made Kozo paper, rough-cut on top and bottom edges; unpaginated, 25.75" tall, signed by artist Francesco Clemente, Limited edition no. 98 of 200, total 288; Translator's Notes laid in; clamshell box bound in cream linen, embossed image on the cover. ***CONDITION: Book, Translator's Notes, and box are all in fine condition with no scuffs, markings, or wear; clean and as new, entirely free of prior owner markings. ***POSTAGE: Due to size and weight, additional postage will apply; we are happy to ship at cost to both domestic and international customers, please inquire for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.          Dubliners

[New York]: The Limited Editions Club, 1986. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Ballagh, Robert. No. 978 of 1000, 4to - over 9.75" - 12" tall, 307 pp., signed by photographer and author of introduction. James Joyce's novels, with their innovative language, use of dialogue, characteristic modernist forms, and social frankness, were met with resistance when they first appeared in print. This collection of vignettes is a penetrating analysis of the stagnation and paralysis of Dublin society. Joyce's intention in writing Dubliners, in his own words, was to write a chapter of the moral history of his country, and he chose Dublin for the scene because that city seemed to him to be the centre of paralysis. He tried to present the stories under four different aspects: childhood, adolescence, maturity and public life (N. B. info from The Poetry Foundation, The James Joyce Centre, and Wikipedia). ***DESCRIPTION: Hand-sewn and bound at the Jovonis Bookbindery in dark-green Nigerian Oasis goat for the spine and Irish handkerchief linen turned over for the boards, five of the photogravure plates were made by Jon Goodman with one plate being made by Paul Taylor and printed on Cartiere Enrico Magnani paper; set in English Monotype Scotch on mould-made paper by Wild Carrot Letterpress; pagination: (i) - xxii, (1) - 289, blank (290), photogravure (291), blank (292, 293, 294), colophon (295); 11" tall, signed by photographer Robert Ballagh and author of introduction Thomas Flanagan, Limited Edition no. 978 of 1000; Limited Editions Club Letter laid in; slipcase of Italian book-cloth and lined in Ultra-Suede, also made by hand at the Jovonis Bookbindery. ***CONDITION: The volume is fine; the binding clean and unrubbed, the text block strong and square, hinges solid, clean and bright inside, entirely free of prior owner markings; clean, crisp, as new.
