Byen bag regnen. Fotografier fra København af Krass Clement ('The City Behind the Rain: Photographs from Copenhagen by Krass Clement').

Copenhagen: Gyldendal, 1987. Oblong8vo. Publisher's original illustrated wrappers. 153 pp. Illustrated throughout. More pictures available upon request. Minor wear to cover. An excellent, clean copy.. 'The City Behind the Rain', Krass Clement's 4th book is a photobook masterpiece with black-and-white photographs from Copenhagen - one of the best of all photo books. Beautifully designed book with charcoal grey and black wrappers matching the melancholic style of Krass Clement's photographs. This photo book was his breakthrough (in Denmark/Scandinavia) and by collectors and the artist himself considered the capital work. It is also one his most accessible books with very classic b/w photography influenced by both the nocturnal Brassaï & Cartier-Bresson and Robert Frank, though the Copenhagen seen through Krass Clement's Leica is his very own.         Blue Water, Yellow Balls

(Easthampton, MA): Warwick Press, 1987. Quarto. (4)pp., accordion-fold. One of twenty copies signed by Carol Blinn, who wrote, illustrated, and printed this book. A poem by Blinn is accompanied by a watercolor illustration that extends across the central page spread, depicting three yellow balls floating on a cerulean pool surrounded by evergreen trees. The image is an homage to David Hockney, who made a series of paintings of swimming pools using vibrant shades of acrylic paint. The title page is accented with blue and yellow watercolor, and on the page following the poem is a palette of the watercolors that Blinn used in her illustration. Created by Blinn in the summer of 1987, the book is an ode to the season, bringing alive the bright colors, heat, and slower pace. Bound in tan cloth with a watercolor label evoking the undulation of water. Housed in a matching box backed in light green morocco. Laid in is a portfolio of materials describing the artist's process of imagining, writing, and designing the book. These include diagrams depicting ideas for the book's binding and eleven drafts of the text, evolving from prose to poetry, showing the author's changes. A lovely, scarce book produced in a very small limitation.

        In the Street

Duke University Press, 1987. First edition of the photographer's second major photobook. Large quarto, original cloth. Signed by Helen Levitt on the title page. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Not to be confused with the more common paperback edition. Helen Levitt and the author James Agee first collaborated in 1945 on a documentary film set in Harlem, called "In the Street". Psychologist Robert Coles contribited the essays to this volume. Owen Edwards from The New York Times has noted that "[i]n common situations Miss Levitt finds the glint of an often bizarre beauty that most of us-including photographers-do not notice. . . . She brings to her pictures an intensity that can be almost hypnotic." "There is no fundamental difference in the great landscapes and quiet portraits of Edward Weston and the profoundly revealing pictures of children by Helen Levitt. Both are photographic perceptions of the highest order" (Ansel Adams).

        Neuschwanstein

Munich And New York: Schellmann. No Binding. Fine. COLOR SCREENPRINT BY ANDY WARHOL. "This print was commissioned to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the Bavarian Reinsurance Company in 1987. It is based on a photograph of Neuschwanstein Castle, a nineteenth-century palace built by King Ludwig of Bavaria in the foothills of the Alps. Today it is an extremely popular tourist attraction and is the most photographed building in Germany. It has also featured in many aspects of contemporary culture from the cover of British band&#39;s Blur&#39;s &#39;Country House&#39; album to numerous computer games. Warhol&#39;s image combines a screenprinted photograph and hand-drawn lines which were also subsequently screenprinted. Through the colour combination, with the castle dramatically different from the landscape, Warhol creates a collaged effect - a characteristic of his work from the 1980s" (National Galleries of Scotland website). Color screenprint, 1987. Image size: 851x600 mm (33.5x23.63 in). Edition of 1200. With the artist&#39;s ink stamp, lower left. Printed by Rupert Jasen Smith, New York. Published by Schellmann, Munich and New York. See Feldman II.372. A spot of soiling at upper margin. A fine impression.

        Norwegian Wood

Tokyo: Kodansha, 1987. First Japanese editions and true firsts of the author&#39;s most well-known work. Octavo, 2 volumes. Both volumes are fine in fine dust jackets with the rare wrap-around band present. Both volumes are signed by Haruki Murakami in Japanese. Rare, especially signed. Norwegian Wood is a nostalgic story of loss and sexuality. The story&#39;s protagonist and narrator is Toru Watanabe, who looks back on his days as a freshman university student living in Tokyo. Through Toru&#39;s reminiscences we see him develop relationships with two very different women &#151; the beautiful yet emotionally troubled Naoko, and the outgoing, lively Midori. The novel is set in Tokyo during the late 1960s, a time when Japanese students, like those of many other nations, were protesting against the established order. While it serves as the backdrop against which the events of the novel unfold, Murakami (through the eyes of Toru and Midori) portrays the student movement as largely weak-willed and hypocritical. Murakami adapted the first section of the novel from an earlier short story, "Firefly." The story was subsequently included in the collection Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman.

He set me up with The International Rescue Committee, which was working at the Thai-Cambodian border".         Troubled Land: The Social Landscape of Northern Ireland

London: Grey Editions / Cornerhouse Publications (Self-published), 1987 Paperback SIGNED. First edition. Near Fine oversized trade paperback with very light shelf wear and light wear at tips. Very slight toning around the edges. BOOKS SHIP THE NEXT BUSINESS DAY, WRAPPED IN PADDING, IN A BOX. Unpaginated (80 pages); 33 full-page color photographic plates; 12 x 9 inches. SIGNED BY GRAHAM on the half title. Out of Print. Troubled Land deals with the small but insistent signs of deep political division within the landscape of Northern Ireland at the time of the "troubles." Avoiding both cliches of sensationalist urban mayhem, or escapist rural idyll, the images flow from inner city through the fringe towns and villages, and out to the countryside, concentrating in each case upon the visual footnotes of the conflict. One of the three books of Graham&#39;s work that redefined the European approach to documentary photography. Very influential and very scarce.

Troubled Land : The Social Landscape of Northern Ireland

London: Grey Editions, 1987. Previous owner&#39;s bookplate to front end paper. No marks or inscriptions. Extremely faint crease to front cover, none to rear or to spine. A lovely clean very tight copy with bright unmarked boards and no bumping to corners. 80pp. This work of full-page colour photographs by Paul Graham deals with the small but insistent signs of deep political division within the landscape of Northern Ireland in the 1980s. &#39;The foreword by Declan McGonagle contrasts the work against the melodramatic imagery of the North and places the Troubles in a broader framework of the marginalisation and denial of power that has been the hallmark of British cononialism for centuries. The main text by Gerry Badger examines the genre of reportage photography and positions this work within a new generation of intelligent documentary photography that represents ideas rather than furnishing simple visual records or illustrating words.&#39;. First Edition. Soft Cover. Near Fine. Illus. by Graham, Paul (photographs). 9 x 11.75 inches.

Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Joel Sternfeld and Elissa Ichiyasu: Oversize-volume format. Pale cream cloth boards with silver titles embossed on spine, as issued. Photographs by Joel Sternfeld. Introduction by Andy Grundberg. Afterword by Anne Wilkes Tucker. Printed on thick coated stock paper by Amilcare Pizzi SPA in Milan, Italy to the highest standards. The plates reproduce, exquisitely and vibrantly, the fine nuances of the originals. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Published on the occasion of the landmark exhibition at The Museum of Fine Arts Houston in 1987. Presents, in its rare First Edition, one of the "touchstone" books in photographic history: Seminal, influential, indispensable. "A search for the truth of a country not just as it exists in a particular era, but as it is in its ever-evolving essence. It is a sad poem, but also a funny and generous one, recognizing endurance, poignant beauty, and determination within its sometimes tense, often ironic juxtapositions of Man and Nature, technology and ruin" (Publisher&#39;s blurb). Sternfeld published the much-awaited sequel, "Stranger Passing" (2001), more than fifteen years later. Both volumes now enjoy canonical status. An absolute "must-have" title for Joel Sternfeld collectors. <b><i> This title is now highly collectible. This is one of very few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Unlike most other copies available online, the DJ spine has no fading whatsoever. This is, quite simply, the most beautiful copy we have ever seen of a book that is usually found with either "minor" or more serious flaws. Please note: Times Books was a subsidiary of Random House, and adopted the latter&#39;s First Edition indications: "First Edition" statement accompanied by a full number line beginning or ending in 2 (instead of 1). These "true first" points remained unchanged until 2004/2005, and even so, on a very inconsistent basis. A rare copy thus. </b></i> 55 color plates. Joel Sternfeld&#39;s "American Prospects" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the finest living American photographers. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JOEL STERNFELD TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 081291659X.

        American Prospects

Houston: Times Books, 1987. First Edition. Oblong quarto. Fine in a near fine dust jacket that shows a small closed tear. Signed by Sternfeld. A very sharp copy. Roth 101; Parr & Badger; The Photobook: A History Vol.II, Joel Sternfeld&#39;s work is considered a classic amongst photography, having permanently enhanced the face of color photography. "American Prospects is less a composed sequence than a series of deceptively classical compositions. But many of the pictures contain wild juxtapositions: firefighters extinguish a blaze while one of their number shops nonchalantly for pumpkins matching the flames; a basketball hoop stands sentry in a new suburban dead end; pretty flowers shimmer alongside a sports car in the same wild pink. The idealized semirural life is really a world of uncanny disquiet, perfectly suited to the still and mute image" (Aperture Magazine).
