Y Beibl Cyssegr-lan 1588

Aberystwyth: National Library of Wales, 1987 In brown cloth with blind tooling. Spine has title in gilt, some blind tooling. Internally, cream endpapers, title page in black inks, (iii), 555 pp, a few spots along text block edges, with its slipcase. A University of Wales production which is a facsimile copy of the 1588 Bishop Morgan Bible, an edition limited in numbers to 500 copies only, and now very difficult to find. A lovely copy of an important and always useful title! Morgan, bishop of St Asaph and biblical translator has been called ‘the single most important figure in the history of the Reformation in Wales’ (Williams, Wales and the Reformation, 342), because it was he who brought to completion the translation of the Bible into Welsh. The Book of Common Prayer, including the psalter, and the New Testament had been translated in 1567, but the task was left unfinished. See ODNB.

        Flower Is

Tokyo: Yugensha. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine. LIMITED FIRST EDITION, ONE OF ONLY 500 COPIES. A FINE COPY IN THE ORIGINAL SHIPPING BOX. Created "primarily as a memorial album to his daughter, Andrea, who was killed in an aeroplane crash ... the whole tenor of the book is forlorn... Never have flowers-that most uplifting of subjects-appeared so woebegone. Seldom has the manic activity of industrial manufacture seemed so pointless. And the Nova Scotia landscapes and still lifes-beautiful, bleak, elegiac-reveal an artist at the height of his powers but hardly at peace with the world or himself." Flower Is... constitutes "a major new statement in still photography... [and] can serve as an eminently fitting apotheosis for stream-of-consciousness photography" (The Photobook, I.264). Designed by Kohei Sugiura with Atsushi Sato. With introduction by Frank. Illustrated with 81 full-page photographs. (Tokyo): (Yugensha), (1987). Folio (343x250mm), original pictorial gray silk, original slipcase with mounted photographic reproduction; in the original shipping box. A fine copy.

Northampton, Massachusetts: Pennyroyal Press, 1987. No. 141 OF 150 COPIES SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR AND ILLUSTRATOR. Hardcover. 238 x 159 mm (9 3/8 x 6 1/4"). 8 p.l., 134 pp. [1] leaf (colophon). No. 141 OF 150 COPIES SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR AND ILLUSTRATOR. Publisher's rich maroon morocco, covers with blindruled border, upper cover with blindstamped medallion depicting a raven in profile, flat spine with gilt titling, marbled endpapers. Stored in a book well in the original maroon cloth clamshell box. With title page vignette, tailpiece, printer's device, and 20 full-page woodcuts by Barry Moser, and WITH AN EXTRA SUITE OF SIGNED PLATES contained in a folder inside the folding box. In mint condition. Well illustrated by Moser and impeccably printed by Harold McGrath in Mardersteig's Dante typeface, this is the only major piece of Welty's fiction to appear in an important private press edition. One of the great Southern Gothic writers of the 20th century, Eudora Welty (1909-2001), who was born in Jackson, Mississippi, incorporated the lore and atmosphere of her birthplace into her writings, some of which are bitingly funny, others of which are depressingly bleak. In the words of ANB, "Bridegroom" is "a whimsical fantasy pastiche that combines figures from legend (keelboatman Mike Fink) and history (the Harp brothers, notorious Trace highwaymen) with many elements from European fairy tales." The grotesque characters of the Southern Gothic novel are ideal subjects for Moser's art, and his re-creations of Welty's cast members here are memorable. This item, especially in the present deluxe version, is uncommonly seen in the marketplace.

Poems. Translated by Michael Feingold. Illustrated by Neil Welliver

New York: Vincent FitzGerald & Company. 1987. First Edition in English of Ibsen's poems, one of 75 copies only, with six etchings, including a double page fold-out. Page size: 8-1/2 x 11-1/2". These etchings were executed in the roullette mezzotint medium by Welliver with the assistance of the master printer, Shigemitsu Tsukaguchi (who prints only for Welliver and Lichtenstein) in this painstaking method resulting in the subtle coloring in each plate. Printed on handmade Dieu Donne' paper by Dan Keleher at the Wild Carrot Letterpress in Perpetua, this is a splendid literary event. Michael Feingold, lead drama critic of THE VILLAGE VOICE for the past decade, is internationally known for his translations of Kurt Weill, Brecht, and Ibsen's prose plays, THE PRETENDERS and WHEN WE DEAD AWAKEN. He is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, NEA Translation Fellowship, and the American Book Award's Lowenfels Prize for Criticism. The late Neil Welliver, celebrated for his ability to merge Abstract Expressionist and representational techniques, has his work in the Whitney, MOMA, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Hirschhorn, Boston, Houston, Baltimore and Philadelphia's museums. He was Professor of Fine Arts at the University of Pennsylvania and resided in Lincolnville, Maine, where the rocky and wooded landscape that figures so frequently in his works bears a strong kinship to the Northern vistas celebrated by Ibsen. The Broom of the System

Viking Pinguin Books David Foster Wallace, The Broom of the System. Viking Pinguin Book, 1987. An uncorrected proof copy of the first edition of the author's first novel in demin blue wrappers, preceding the advance reading copy. While the original first edition in hardcover, published on January 6th, 1987, may be listed as rare, especially since, reportedly, quite some of the reported 1300 copies went out to libraries, and the advanced reading copy even more uncommon, only a handfull of these uncorrected proofs exist. Enclosed is a July 9th, 1986 memo from the publisher presenting this uncorrected proof copy (to eight recipients only) and discussing the upcoming advanced reading copy, due for August, 'that will have the flash cover art in all its brilliant colours.' A very fine and tight copy in protective cover.

        The Making of Books

(Lime Rock, CT: Lime Rock Press, 1987). Four volumes. Unpaginated. One of 50 numbered copies printed by Dard Hunter, Jr. at the Mountain House Press. The text, written in 1915, is reprinted from the quarterly published by Alfred Fowler entitled The Miscellany, Volume II, No. 1. It was written by Dard Hunter and comprises his initial compilation on the subject of making books by hand. The Collected Stories

Los Angeles, California, Columbia, Pennsylvania: Underwood/Miller,, 1987. [Comprising:] Beyond Lies the Wub; Second Variety; The Father-Thing; The Days of Perky Pat; The Little Black Box. 5 volumes, octavo. Original coloured cloth, titles to spines in black, tan endpapers. All housed in the publisher's black cloth slipcase. A beautiful set in excellent condition. First edition, first impression of his posthumous collection of Philip K. Dick's stories; one of a limited edition of 500 sets numbered in the first volume. With a preface by the author (from a letter written in the year before his death in 1982) in the first volume, a foreword by Steven Owen Godersky (also in volume one), and introductions to each volume by Roger Zelazny, Norman Spinrad, John Brunner, James Tiptree, Jr., and Thomas M Disch. Dick, in his preface, states his definition of "good science fiction" based upon the invasion of a hypothetical "new idea" into reader's conception of the world: "if it is good sf the idea is new, it is stimulating, and probably most important of all, it sets off a chain-reaction of ramification-ideas in the mind of the reader; it so-to-speak unlocks the reader's mind so that the mind, like the author's, begins to create." Included, laid in to the first volume, is the "Brief Synopsis for Alternate World Novel: The Acts of Paul" pamphlet, which publishes Dick's intriguing plan for an unwritten novel set in a world in which Paul of Tarsus was never converted on the road to Damascus, leaving Christianity to die out and Manichaeism to become the established religion.

1987. BRIARWOOD WRITERS' ALLIANCE CORRESPONDENCE AND PUBLICITY ARCHIVE. William "Bill" G. Thompson (American, 1922-2009) founded Briarwood Writers' Alliance in 1987 in Needham, MA. He was educated at Boston University and worked in radio and for RCA Victor records before entering into literary representation work with Lordly and Dame, a literary agency in Boston, during the 1970s through the 80s; after a few years he founded Briarwood and as its President represented more than 150 writers and poets - among them some Pulitzer and Nobel prize winners, and performers, booking lectures and readings at colleges and universities. His correspondence is lively and personable, and many of his letters close "Hastily," giving the impression of a bustling business and a a busy schedule juggling campus appearances, promoting poets and poetry, keeping abreast of publishing world news, and making sure his artists are happy and well taken care of as they make the rounds of lecture halls and ivy league faculty parties. Alphabetically his clients ranged from Chinua Achebe to Richard Wilbur. Besides copies of Thompson's correspondence, the individual files often contain a typed note and/or letter signed by the author, along with publicity photos, copies of reviews, etc. A complete list of the authors included in this archive is available upon request.

Vuk Television Photos, a Monograph of one of the Most Ambitious series in Belgrade Television

Book Description: RTB- RTV Theory and Practice Quarterly, Belgrade, Yugoslavia, 1987. Soft cover. Book Condition: Good. 1st Edition. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Vuk Television Photography 1987 Monochrome Monograph was done by Photographer Ljubinko Kozul during the Filming of the television series," Vuk Karadzic - From Idea to Reality" this was a series done in 10 to 13 episodes started in 1976 to celebrate Vuk Karadzic his life and times. He was a 19th Century Linguist, whose grammar was adapted by most of the nations in former Yugoslavia. California Time

(Postenkill, NY: Kaldewey Press, 1987). Folio. (36)pp. One of forty-five copies in a plexiglass binding by Christian Zwang of Hamburg. Signed by Gunnar Kaldewey. With numerous monochromatic and two-tone illustrations. Written, illustrated, designed, and printed by Kaldewey as Volume 5 of the Kaldewey Press series. In 1977, Kaldewey printed New York, his first book about America. Ten years later, California Time was published as a counterpoint to that volume. In it, Kaldewey offers his observations about California's landscapes, both natural and manmade, in prose that ranges from playful to bleak. He sees the landscape with an artist's eye, describing the "simmering city" and the "juicy orange of the West." These verbal images are illustrated in Kaldewey's stylized manner, including one double-page spread showing the Pacific Ocean in aqua and gray on a transparency. A remarkable production by one of the leading contemporary book artists. Housed in an orange cloth folding box, lettered in silver on the front cover and spine. Together with the original woodblock to the first illustration in the book. Printed in silver, the illustration is of a palm tree, placed across from the text: "It is the sun, the cars and the palm trees. A lot of light. Everything has to do with light." The block was inscribed on the back by Kaldewey in 1988.
