Tucson: Ned Ludd Books, 1987. Octavo (19.5cm). Original illustrated wrappers; 311pp; illustrated with halftones and line illustrations in text. Abbey's inscription is dated in year of publication; others undated. Light external rubbing; evidence stickers stapled to front and rear wrappers; Very Good.& & This copy of the book was used as official evidence in the 1990 trial of Ms. Millett and fellow Earth First! co-conspirators Mark Davis, Marc Baker, and Ilse Asplund (collectively, the group called itself the "Evan Mecham Eco-Terrorist International Conspiracy," with the acronym EMETIC) for causing more than $50,000 damage to ski lifts at the Arizona Snowbowl near Flagstaff and for later attempting to down power lines near the Palo Verde Nuclear Power Plant. The defendants pleaded guilty and served varying prison sentences, but the case marked an important turning point for Earth First!, bringing national notoriety to the group and attracting an influx of increasingly militant, anarchist-affiliated members. Eventually, founder David Foreman and a number of other "elder statesmen" of the movement resigned, with Foreman founding the Wildlands Project in 1991.         Norwegian Wood

Tokyo: Kodansha, 1987. First Japanese editions and true firsts of the author's most well-known work. Octavo, 2 volumes. Both volumes are fine in fine dust jackets with the rare wrap-around band present. Both volumes are signed by Haruki Murakami in Japanese. Rare, especially signed. Norwegian Wood is a nostalgic story of loss and sexuality. The story's protagonist and narrator is Toru Watanabe, who looks back on his days as a freshman university student living in Tokyo. Through Toru's reminiscences we see him develop relationships with two very different women — the beautiful yet emotionally troubled Naoko, and the outgoing, lively Midori. The novel is set in Tokyo during the late 1960s, a time when Japanese students, like those of many other nations, were protesting against the established order. While it serves as the backdrop against which the events of the novel unfold, Murakami (through the eyes of Toru and Midori) portrays the student movement as largely weak-willed and hypocritical. Murakami adapted the first section of the novel from an earlier short story, "Firefly." The story was subsequently included in the collection Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman.

Troubled Land: The Social Landscape of Northern Ireland

London: Grey Editions / Cornerhouse Publications (Self-published), 1987 Paperback SIGNED. First edition. Near Fine oversized trade paperback with very light shelf wear and light wear at tips. Very slight toning around the edges. BOOKS SHIP THE NEXT BUSINESS DAY, WRAPPED IN PADDING, IN A BOX. Unpaginated (80 pages); 33 full-page color photographic plates; 12 x 9 inches. SIGNED BY GRAHAM on the half title. Out of Print. Troubled Land deals with the small but insistent signs of deep political division within the landscape of Northern Ireland at the time of the "troubles." Avoiding both cliches of sensationalist urban mayhem, or escapist rural idyll, the images flow from inner city through the fringe towns and villages, and out to the countryside, concentrating in each case upon the visual footnotes of the conflict. One of the three books of Graham's work that redefined the European approach to documentary photography. Very influential and very scarce.

A lovely clean very tight copy with bright unmarked boards and no bumping to corners. 80pp. This work of full-page colour photographs by Paul Graham deals with the small but insistent signs of deep political division within the landscape of Northern Ireland in the 1980s. 'The foreword by Declan McGonagle contrasts the work against the melodramatic imagery of the North and places the Troubles in a broader framework of the marginalisation and denial of power that has been the hallmark of British cononialism for centuries. The main text by Gerry Badger examines the genre of reportage photography and positions this work within a new generation of intelligent documentary photography that represents ideas rather than furnishing simple visual records or illustrating words.'. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Joel Sternfeld and Elissa Ichiyasu: Oversize-volume format. Pale cream cloth boards with silver titles embossed on spine, as issued. Photographs by Joel Sternfeld. Introduction by Andy Grundberg. Afterword by Anne Wilkes Tucker. Printed on thick coated stock paper by Amilcare Pizzi SPA in Milan, Italy to the highest standards. The plates reproduce, exquisitely and vibrantly, the fine nuances of the originals. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Published on the occasion of the landmark exhibition at The Museum of Fine Arts Houston in 1987. Presents, in its rare First Edition, one of the "touchstone" books in photographic history: Seminal, influential, indispensable. "A search for the truth of a country not just as it exists in a particular era, but as it is in its ever-evolving essence. It is a sad poem, but also a funny and generous one, recognizing endurance, poignant beauty, and determination within its sometimes tense, often ironic juxtapositions of Man and Nature, technology and ruin" (Publisher&#39;s blurb). Sternfeld published the much-awaited sequel, "Stranger Passing" (2001), more than fifteen years later. Both volumes now enjoy canonical status. An absolute "must-have" title for Joel Sternfeld collectors. <b><i> This title is now highly collectible. This is one of very few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Unlike most other copies available online, the DJ spine has no fading whatsoever. This is, quite simply, the most beautiful copy we have ever seen of a book that is usually found with either "minor" or more serious flaws. Please note: Times Books was a subsidiary of Random House, and adopted the latter&#39;s First Edition indications: "First Edition" statement accompanied by a full number line beginning or ending in 2 (instead of 1). These "true first" points remained unchanged until 2004/2005, and even so, on a very inconsistent basis. A rare copy thus. </b></i> 55 color plates. Joel Sternfeld&#39;s "American Prospects" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the finest living American photographers. A fine collectible copy.         American Prospects

Houston: Times Books, 1987. First Edition. Oblong quarto. Fine in a near fine dust jacket that shows a small closed tear. Signed by Sternfeld. A very sharp copy. Roth 101; Parr & Badger; The Photobook: A History Vol.II, Joel Sternfeld&#39;s work is considered a classic amongst photography, having permanently enhanced the face of color photography. "American Prospects is less a composed sequence than a series of deceptively classical compositions. But many of the pictures contain wild juxtapositions: firefighters extinguish a blaze while one of their number shops nonchalantly for pumpkins matching the flames; a basketball hoop stands sentry in a new suburban dead end; pretty flowers shimmer alongside a sports car in the same wild pink. The idealized semirural life is really a world of uncanny disquiet, perfectly suited to the still and mute image" (Aperture Magazine).

The letters are very interesting and also personal, for example he tells Angharad to be selective in her small safari through his novels, "...there&#39;s a pretty clear spectrum running from the visionary & idealistic (Crystal World and Unlimited Dream Co) to more or less out and out porn, as in Crash - though to me that&#39;s my most idealistic book of all...." He talks about the part-autobiographical nature of "Empire" and how his experiences in the camps changed him, "...in the sense of reducing the moral authority of the received world to nil, and placing immense value on the power of the imagination to remake everything - rather psychotic really." And also, "Latin? My first love (a school in England....in the late 40&#39;s we even attempted Latin conversation - heroically pointless)". The other letter covers flying lessons, writers on flying and how learning to fly can signal a life about to change. He manages in both the letters and the postcards to be inspiring and present fresh ideas and his passion for life as he does in all his work. The book is fine in wrapper. The dedication states, "For Angharad, &#39;The aeroplane has unveiled for us the true face of the earth&#39; - St. Ex All the best JG Ballard [two dots and a flourish]"

        American Prospects

New York: Times Books in association with the Museum of Fine Arts Houston Texas. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. FIRST EDITION of Sternfeld&#39;s first and most celebrated photobook, illustrated with fifty-five color photographs. "Joel Sternfeld travelled the country for around eight years with a 8x10 view camera and colour film, a sojourn that produced his first and best-known book, American Prospects... The particular quality brought by Sternfeld to the 8x10 colour-landscape aesthetic... is a clear sense of narrative... In American Prospects, each picture suggests an arcane drama being played out-an elephant stranded on a road in Oregon, or a pumpkin stall in Virginia behind which a house burns fiercely. These narrative hints are suggestive, sly, often ironic, frequently mysterious, making American Prospects less a series of photographs than a series of tales-unfinished, elliptical certainly-that add up to a cogent and persuasive view of America..." (Parr/Badger, The Photobook). Roth 260. New York: Times Books, in association with the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas, 1987. Oblong quarto (255x302mm), original gray cloth, original photographic dust jacket. A hint of bowing to boards, otherwise book and dust jacket fine.

Type set by Dan Carr and Julia Ferrari at the Golgonooza Letter Foundry. Page size: 12 x 14 inches; 94 leaves, 3 of which are double folds, one printed page loose as insert (Dreams section), two fold-out images (Death section). & Bound: loose as issued in original wrappers in hand-made box by David Bourbeau at The Thistle Bindery in Japanese hand-made silk woven for this box, with incised line of Japanese tea paper showing profile of Joyce, spine of box slightly sunned, book fine.& Joyce&#39;s EPIPHANIES, the writings in his early notebooks that are the basis for the rest of his great works and which have never been published before. The EPIPHANIES are astonishing fragments of dreams, overheard conversations, and particles of experiences. In making the book, the artists and publisher divided THE EPIPHANIES into four sections: "Dreams," "Games," "Planes," and "Death." Each Epiphany is printed on a separate page with the page number printed in a different color. The four printed Introductions to the image sections each have printed on them, in the same color as the actual page number, all the page numbers that relate to that image section. Marjorie Van Dyke developed the images for the dreams and the games sections; Susan Weil developed the planes and death sections. These paragraphs and accompanying images take the reader / viewer through a series of Joyce&#39;s experiences as a boy, seeing and overhearing the world around him. & Selected by the Independent Curators for the Franklin Furnace exhibition "Contemporary Illustrated Books" as one of the 50 best illustrated books from 1966-1988, it was also featured in the Boston Athenaeum exhibition, "Artists of the Book, 1988: A Facet of Modernism." This important book was sold out within six months of publication and is now infrequently available on the secondary market. It is hard to overstate the importance of this book in contemporary book arts. It is one of the first, if not the first, to entice the reader / viewer with texts and images that they must manipulate to fully see - something now a relatively common occurance in book arts. <br>See an <A HREF= http://www.bookrouter.com/im/juvelisbks/10666.jpg >Image.</A><br>

        Memento

Berkeley, CA: Flying Fish Press, 2012. Fine. Number 49 of 50 copies signed by the book artist. An exquisite work by internationally known book artist Julie Chen. Ms. Chen started her press in 1987 and has become renowned for her limited edition artists&#39; books, which emphasize three-dimensional and movable structures, and fine press printing. In her artist&#39;s statement, Ms. Chen says that her work is heavily rooted in the idea of the book as a physical object and time-based medium. Memento is about the fragility of the book and the power of reading. It includes a miniature book that is housed in a metal locket that allows the reader to wear the book close to the body. The simple act of carrying a book on one&#39;;s person has diverse implications depending on circumstance and place. The locket also houses a triptych that contains a woven token commemorating Al-Mutanabbi Street in Iraq. The texts on the woven strips are taken from the preambles to the constitutions of the United States and Iraq. The image surrounding the token is of a booksellers stall on Al-Mutanabbi Street prior to the bombing in 2007. While the commemorative aspect of this piece is clear, the content of Memento addresses philosophical questions about the nature of reading and information transfer in our own lives as well as within the context of western culture in general. This edition is part of An Inventory of Al-Mutanabbi Street, a project to "re-assemble" some of the reading material lost in the car bombing of the street in March 2007. The street had been the historic center of Baghdad bookselling. The book and locket are housed in a brown silk covered box, with trim and the frame around the book in a lovely patterned orange silk. The colophon pulls out from a slot on the front edge of the book. The intricate locket was fabricated by Christina Kemp based on a design by Julie Chen. The book is 1 9/16 x 2 1/8 x 5/16 inches; the locket is 1 7/8 x 2 7/16 x 3/4 inches; The box is 5 3/4 x 6 3/4 x 2 7/8 inches. In fine condition. ARTISTSBOOKS/031113.

FIDEL AND RELIGION: CASTRO TALKS ON REVOLUTION AND RELIGION WITH FREI BETTO

New York: Simon & Schuster, (1987). First Edition. Hardcover. Fine in a Fine dustwrapper. Introduction by Harvey Cox. Lengthily INSCRIBED and SIGNED on the publisher's logo page by the author: "Para el Sr. Edgard/Bronfman, como recuerdo/de su visita a Cuba y de/la interesante e instructiva/conversacion que hemos sos-/tenido/Amistosamente/Fidel Castro/Mayo 12, 1987." Books signed by Castro are scarce, and this is a specially interesting example. After his father's death in 1971, Edgar Bronfman took over as president of Distillers Corporation-Seagrams Ltd. He became well-known internationally during the 1980s and 1990s as the president of the World Jewish Congress leading campaigns to free Soviet Jewry and compensating victims of the Holocaust and their heirs, as well as exposing the Nazi past of Austrian president Kurt Waldheim. In 1982 he became the first representative of a Jewish organization to speak before the United Nations. He was awarded a Presidential Medal of Freedom by Bill Clinton in 1999. In April, 2012 Bronfman joined 68 other billionaires in the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Giving Pledge. Bronfman's former father-in-law, John L. Loeb, owned 40% of Cuban Atlantic Sugar and had large personal holdings of Cuban real estate. The Bronfman family also had connections to the Kennedy family, going back to the Prohibition era and the head of each dynasty, Samuel Bronfman, Edgar's father, and Joe Kennedy, father of the assassinated President. Over the years there has been speculation, tenuous as it is, tying the Bronfman family to the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

        Y Beibl Cyssegr-lan 1588

Aberystwyth: National Library of Wales, 1987 In brown cloth with blind tooling. Spine has title in gilt, some blind tooling. Internally, cream endpapers, title page in black inks, (iii), 555 pp, a few spots along text block edges, with its slipcase. A University of Wales production which is a facsimile copy of the 1588 Bishop Morgan Bible, an edition limited in numbers to 500 copies only, and now very difficult to find. A lovely copy of an important and always useful title! Morgan, bishop of St Asaph and biblical translator has been called &lsquo;the single most important figure in the history of the Reformation in Wales&rsquo; (Williams, Wales and the Reformation, 342), because it was he who brought to completion the translation of the Bible into Welsh. The Book of Common Prayer, including the psalter, and the New Testament had been translated in 1567, but the task was left unfinished. See ODNB.

        Flower Is

Tokyo: Yugensha. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine. LIMITED FIRST EDITION, ONE OF ONLY 500 COPIES. A FINE COPY IN THE ORIGINAL SHIPPING BOX. Created "primarily as a memorial album to his daughter, Andrea, who was killed in an aeroplane crash ... the whole tenor of the book is forlorn... Never have flowers-that most uplifting of subjects-appeared so woebegone. Seldom has the manic activity of industrial manufacture seemed so pointless. And the Nova Scotia landscapes and still lifes-beautiful, bleak, elegiac-reveal an artist at the height of his powers but hardly at peace with the world or himself." Flower Is... constitutes "a major new statement in still photography... [and] can serve as an eminently fitting apotheosis for stream-of-consciousness photography" (The Photobook, I.264). Designed by Kohei Sugiura with Atsushi Sato. With introduction by Frank. Illustrated with 81 full-page photographs. (Tokyo): (Yugensha), (1987). Folio (343x250mm), original pictorial gray silk, original slipcase with mounted photographic reproduction; in the original shipping box. A fine copy.
