La Porcelaine des Compagnie des Indes a Décor Occidental

Flammarion, Paris 1986 - French text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 25 x 33.9 cm; 2.76 Kg; 432 pages with 1206 illustrations, 100 in colour.; Minor signs of wear on the front cover, spine and back cover of the dust jacket.; Reference work.; The purpose of this work is the identification of all porcelain pieces with western decorations ordered in China through the East India Company.; Parmi des millions d'objets en porcelaine qui, par l'entremise des Compagnies des Indes, arrivèrent de Chine en Europe puis aux États-Unis au cours du XVIIIº siècle, il s'en trouve un certain nombre particulièrement apprécie des amateurs.

Livre joint. Oeuvre originale

Fine. np, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Text in English and Portuguese. Drawings by Richard Giglio. Designed by Sam Shahid, Rise Daniels and Donald Sterzin. Bruce Weber's second book - an outrageously lavish paperback that was published at the then unheard of price of $60.00! - is a joyous celebration of the cultural diversity of Brazil. Filled with tanned, elegant bodies on the beach, and in hotels and nightclubs, "O Rio de Janeiro" portrays the city's youthful hedonism in a way that had not been captured before, or since. One of the most notable aspects of this book is the many portraits of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu legend Rickson Gracie, and his fifteen member family at work and at play. An exceptionally handsome example of this most desirable early Bruce Weber title (cited on pages 254-57 of "The Book of 101 Books").         J. D. Salinger: A Writing Life.

New York: Random House,, 1986. Octavo. Original yellow wrappers, title to spine and front cover black. Housed in a custom blue cloth folding case. A fine copy. First state of the uncorrected proofs bound from sheets of the May setting with all suppressed content extant of Hamilton's unpublished biography. A scarce and significant Salinger item, it is the only record of the biography as Hamilton originally intended it to be published, and the only appearance in print of significant portions of the Salinger letters from which Hamilton quoted. The book was never published as a result of judicial decisions in the case of J. D. Salinger vs. Random House and Ian Hamilton (1987). Salinger saw these proofs, released by Random House in anticipation of publication in autumn 1986, and requested that all the quotes be removed, threatening legal action. Hamilton set about revising the book by paraphrasing even more of the quotations, though it was "unpleasant work and I disliked having to throw out most of Salinger's best lines. In almost every instance, I was deadening his language; I was making him seem duller than he was" (Hamilton, Granta, 1988). A second set of proofs was released in September, but despite the revisions Salinger took Random House to court. The legal procedings, culminating in a Supreme Court case, resulted in a final judgment in favour of Salinger. With the incorrect spelling of the author's name (Hamiton) to the front wrapper and title page.

        Postcard to Roy Kerridge.

Postcard 14 x 11 cm, red ink on cream card with design of dove of peace to front, manuscript message with musical notation signed by Pete Seeger to reverse with US 22 cent stamp, sent from his home in Beacon, NY; horizontal creases across card, very good. This is a fascinating postcard from Pete Seeger (b. 1919), the singer and song-writer whose work in the post-war period made him a senior and pivotal figure in the folk revival of the 1960s. He wrote protest songs such as "Where Have All The Flowers Gone?" and "If I Had A Hammer" that were of central importance to the burgeoning folk and underground movements and which were inspirational to the young Bob Dylan, of whom Seeger was an early supporter. The Byrds were heavily indebted to him, including famous versions of his songs "Turn, Turn, Turn" and "The Bells of Rhymney" alongside several Dylan numbers on their first album. A card-carrying communist in his youth, he was blacklisted by US television for many years and continues to record politically-charged music together with his beloved traditional folksongs to this day. This little message to the British writer Roy Kerridge reveals Seeger the musicologist, tracing the origins of the song "Kumbaya" back to the South Carolina gospel song "Come by here" , with the observation, which once made seems so obvious that one wonders why one had never noticed it before, that it uses the melody of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star". Kerridge is a man thoroughly in tune with Seeger's beliefs. In his 2011 autobiographical novel Stalin's Schoolboy, Kerridge, who was brought up by Marxist parents, puts this definition of communism into the mouth of his 11 year old self: "?It means that you like Russia more than England, you don?t like God and Empire, but you do like folk tales and folksongs. You like primitive people better than white people, so you stick up for the Indians, not Cowboys'".

[Original Artist's Book:] THE HISTORY OF HOSIERY

[Brooklyn: The Artist, 1986. Narrow octavo (17.5 x 8 cm). Painted silk binding, with laces. Fold-outs consisting of two folded leaves of heavy stock, with double- spread center piece. In line with the material used, fine. A unique artist's book by this prominent American book artist, composed with mixed media and bound in a painted silk binding with raised girdle-snaps arranged under the silk and other features evocative of the subject. The three separate images consist of collaged pictorial clippings, worked over by hand with paint and other media. This is a good example of Schaer's exploration, often through the literal use of garments, of feminist and social issues. This work was exhibited at the 1986 Center for Book Arts "New Works" show, and in 1990, at the Lower East Side Print Shop exhibition, "Selections."

Men's Lives. The Surfmen and Baymen of the South Fork

NY: Random House. (1986). A volume about the fishermen of eastern Long Island and a way of life that, in the late stages of the 20th century, appeared to be irretrievably dying away. Matthiessen spent much of his life on eastern Long Island, and once ran a charter fishing boat off the island in addition to having worked for three years with commercial fishermen, so this sympathetic portrait was written from the perspective of one who, at least for period of a time, shared the life described. Inscribed by Matthiessen to his father: "Dear Dad - It's not the Race, but it's the same part of the country/ Thanks for teaching us about boats! Much love/ Pete/ Sagaponack NY 11962." [Zip code added, rather than date.] Also signed in full, "Peter Matthiessen," on the same page. The reference to "the Race" is to Race Rock, a reef off the coast of eastern Long Island, famous for its lighthouse and for being a hazard to sailors; it also gave Matthiessen the title for his first novel, published in 1954. Creasing to the last 20 pages; minor dampstaining to the lower edges; a very good copy in a very good, price-clipped dust jacket. An excellent family association, and one that sheds light on family and personal history. First Edition. Hardcover.
