One of the fanatic visitors of Paradiso was Max Natkiel. From 1980 onwards he decided to bring his camera along, when going to concerts and other occasions, as if to try and stop time. Absolutely astounding- one of the best photobooks on early 80's youth culture. 6 [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        The Rehnquist Supreme Court Signed.

Rehnquist Supreme Court oversized color photograph signed by all nine justices. Group portrait of the Rehnquist Court taken on the occasion of the investiture of Clarence Thomas. Signed on the mat below by Clarence Thomas, William Rehnquist, Anthony Kennedy, Antonin Scalia, Harry A. Blackmun, John Paul Stevens, Byron R. White, Sandra Day O'Connor, and David H. Souter. The photograph measures 13.5 inches by 10.5 inches. The entire framed piece measures 21.5 inches by 17.5 inches. The Rehnquist Court refers to the Supreme Court of the United States from 1986 to 2005, when William Rehnquist served as Chief Justice of the United States. Rehnquist succeeded Warren Burger as Chief Justice after the latter's retirement, and Rehnquist served as Chief Justice until his death in 2005, at which point John Roberts was nominated and confirmed as Rehnquist's replacement. The Rehnquist Court is generally considered to be more conservative than the preceding Burger Court and Warren Court. According to Jeffrey Rosen, Rehnquist combined an amiable nature with great organizational skill, and he "led a Court that put the brakes on some of the excesses of the Earl Warren era while keeping pace with the sentiments of a majority of the country." Biographer John Jenkins argued that Rehnquist politicized the Supreme Court and moved the court and the country to the right. Through its rulings, the Rehnquist Court often promoted a policy of New Federalism in which more power was given to the states at the expense of the federal government. The Rehnquist Court was also notable for its stability, as the same nine justices served together from 1994 to 2005, the longest such stretch in Supreme Court history.

Antidotarium generale ... nunc primum laboriose congestum, methodicè digestum. Cum elencho locupletissimo.Basel, Eusebius Episcopius and son, 1576. 4to. With woodcut device on title-page and larger variant on last page. Contemporary limp sheepskin parchment.

Durling 4702; G. Sonnedecker, Kremers and Urdang's History of Pharmacy (1986), pp. 96, 425 & 440; USTC (5 copies). First edition of a celebrated antidotary by the Swiss physician and philosopher Johannes Jacob Wecker (1528-1586). "In 1557 he became a professor of logic and in 1560 of Latin. He discharged the duties of both offices vigorously, studied medicine, and became a popular physician" (Hagelin). His antidotary, a book on remedies, "contains a comprehensive formulary, directions for preparing galenical and chemical remedies of the time, and instructions on the art of compounding and dispensing prescriptions" (Sonnedecker). The text starts with a two-page list of authors whose works Wecker used for his antidotary. Among the authors are many esteemed Arab authors, including Avicenna (Ibn Sina), Mesue (Masawaih al-Mardini), Rhasis (Razi), and Serapion the younger. Also mentioned are Valerius Cordus, Dioscorides, Fuchs, Galen, Hippocrates (Boqrat) and many more.Even though animal parts were used for medicinal purposes for centuries, according to Sonnedecker "their bizarre use reached its climax" in Wecker's Antidotarium. The woodcuts show different instruments and other equipment which are necessary for making distillations: pans, pots, ovens, glassware etc., as well as different distillation methods. Wecker became also known for his translation into German and Latin of Alexis of Piedmont's Secreti. With owner's annotations on title-page, and a small hole from trying to remove some of the notations. Large waterstains throughout, slightly browned. Vellum with some stains. Overall a good copy.

        Approach to the Site

Brooklyn: Waterstreet Press, 1986. Signed Limited First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Timothy C. Ely. Copy 42 of 49. Ten folios, offset printed on Arches cover buff. This copy in a unique binding by the author/illustrator Timothy C. Ely. Artist's statement:Approach to the Site is one of the very few editioned books I have made. In itself it is a departure from my other editioned books because the printing was done using commercial offset lithography. I made this choice having seen some impressive examples of work produced by Waterstreet Press in Brooklyn, a fine book and art printer. My paper choice suggests oxidation and entropy. We all go yellow in the end. I received a grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation which funded the printing and supplies for the binding.Approach to the Site is a reflection on my ideas of libraries and how those ideas both inspired and directed some of my work at that time. In the early 80s, when this book was produced, a core idea for me rippled out from the image of Library as Island. I had visited national libraries in England, Italy and France and, of course, the Library of Congress and the New York Public library. I always look in on any library I pass for they seem to me to be like ponds of influence and all you have to do is throw in a stone. I am one of those stones. In addition to the visits, absorbing architecture and the direct influence and inspiration of physical books, I read a book on the history of the early Christian Church called THE LIVES OF THE DESERT FATHERS. I became intrigued with the idea of an archetypal library as a radiant island or colony of thinkers and seekers. North Africa seems to be a string of beads, a constellation of sorts, each bead or star a monastery, many with a library. For some forgotten reason I set the archetype in central Turkey. The library was not Atlantis-like or special beyond just being an amazing repository of world knowledge, perhaps concealed or requiring clearance like the Vatican Library and its veiled basement.I began a small series of now lost sketches mostly done in the American Museum of Natural History in New York. These would guide my ideas as I drew each mylar color separation by hand. A few images used 4 colors, some two, and many were monochromatic reflecting a set of subjects I would have liked to have found in this secret library. The edition took decades to complete as I am a reluctant edition binder. With my work on unique manuscript books and other projects there has always been something more compelling to do. I tended to bind a few copies of Approach to the Site at a time or when a client showed some interest. - Timothy C. Ely, February 2017As is usual with editioned books, copies of Approach to the Site were not completed and numbered sequentially. Ely retains copy #1, unbound. Over time, many of the case bound copies were repurposed. Far fewer than the stated edition of 49 copies were issued or actually exist.Conventional sewing. Boards covered in remaindered leaves and fragments from the printing (partially revealed) and then given a crusticular treatment using various sands and aggregate compounds from many high desert landscapes. Housed in a custom clamshell box by the artist. Bound by Timothy Ely in 1998. 27.5cm x 37cm.

Collection of material related to the recording and marketing of First Blues (John Hammond Records, 1983)

V.p., chiefly New York and Boulder, CO, 1986. Condition generally very good, with some signs of use and prior folding. A collection of autograph, printed, and audio material concerning the production of the 1983 John Hammond Records release of Allen Ginsberg's rock 'n roll album, First Blues. The collection was assembled by Hank O'Neal - photographer, author, record producer, and Executive Vice-President of Hammond Music Enterprises - and includes autograph letters, notes and postcards from Ginsberg to O'Neal, drafts and proofs of the linear notes ("The Ginsberg Gallimaufry"), lyric and chord sheets, fourteen cassette tapes of early mixes and unreleased tracks, and an extensive file of press clippings assembled and annotated by Ginsberg. Ginsberg's frequent letters and postcards to O'Neal exhibit an intense interest in the publicity and press coverage surrounding the album's release. Ginsberg started work on this album as early as 1971, following a jam session with Bob Dylan - who praised Ginsberg's ability to improvise lyrics. Ginsberg recorded with Dylan shortly thereafter and again in 1976 with Dylan and members of his Rolling Thunder Review. John Hammond's attempt to release the record on CBS in the mid-'70s went nowhere, as label executives feared the album was too controversial (some song titles: "Everybody Sing (Gay Lib Rag)" & "You are My Dildo"). More tracks and overdubs were recorded in 1981 following the formation of Hammond Music Enterprises, and the album was finally released in 1983. A full cataloguing of the collection is available on request. Provenance: Hank O'Neal
