The Small Garden of Gloria Stuart

1986. Limited First Edition. With Box. Like New. No. 49 of 50 copies of this artist's book inspired by the movie star Gloria Stuart (1910 -2010). Ms. Stuart was a leading lady in the 1930s and early 1940s, best known then for her roles in "The Invisible Man", and many decades later, after a long retirement from the movies, for her role in "Titanic" in 1997.Ms. Stuart, though, was far from idle during her many years away from acting, and her multifarious productivity away from the camera are every bit as fascinating as her Hollywood career. Besides being a political activist sympathetic to liberal causes throughout her life, Ms. Stuart was active in the decorative arts as a designer and business owner, and she enjoyed considerable success as a primitivist painter as well. Most pertinent to this book, Ms. Stuart became both an ardent gardener and an artisan printer, producing artist's book in which she did virtually everything, including the writing, the designing and the printing. While this book was written and produced by Joseph J. D'Ambrosio, a celebrated California book artist, it is a celebration and homage to Ms. Stuart's achievements, and some of the elements in the book such as the overlay of foliage imagery are a nod to Ms. Stuart's own work. This D'Ambrosio creation impresses with many other clever effects such as its intricate paper cuts of the preliminary pages to conjure up a three dimensional illusion of forest and trees, with the foreground a caryatid of two tree trunks shaped like women's bodies.D'Ambrosio has bestowed on us an object of revelatory beauty, and while the aesthetic is unabashedly modernist, the spirit is traditional artistry and artisanship at its best. The book, which is modest in size, a little over 6 inches tall, is in mint condition, and it is protected with a cloth box that contains a felt repository or well in which the book resides.

        THE FLOOD

Edinburgh: Polygon, [1986]., 1986. First edition. Signed by the author. Author's first book. Fine in dust jacket. Mary Miller is an outcast, believed by some to have occult powers, and is the mother of a bastard son, Sandy. Years later, Mary finds herself caught up in a faltering affair with a local schoolteacher while Sandy falls in love with a strange homeless girl. As the action moves towards a tense and unexpected climax, both mother and son are forced to come to terms with the past, in the growing knowledge that their small dramas are being played out against a much larger canvas, a drama glimpsed only in symbols and flickering images of decay and regrowth, of fire and water - of the flood.

Howl. Original Draft Facsimile, Transcript & Variant Versions, Fully Annotated by Author, With Contemporaneous Correspondence, Account of First Public Reading, Legal Skirmishes, Precursor Texts & Bibliography. Edited by Barry Miles

New York: Harper & Row (1986). First edition. Edited by Barry Miles. Quarto. Tiny scuff on last leaf, else fine in about fine dustwrapper with a couple of tiny spots on the front panel. Nicely Inscribed by Ginsberg over two pages to fellow Beat poet Ray Bremser with a drawings of a flower and a snake: "For Ray Bremser - See you in Brooklyn Monday March 16, 1987 to teach my class and read your poetry. Allen Ginsberg. New York City 777-6786. February 3, 1987." As a teenager Bremser was imprisoned in reform school for armed robbery, where he began writing jazz-inspired Beat poetry, sending it to Ginsberg, Corso, and Le Roi Jones, who published them in "Yugen", and celebrated his release with a party in 1958. Despite their championship, he lived a rough life filled with excess, but never abandoned his poetry. In the process he shared an apartment with Elvin Jones, got high with John Coltrane, and inspired Bob Dylan (as per the liner notes of "Another Side of Bob Dylan"). After his death, his ashes were spread by other poets on Ginsberg's farm in Cherry Valley, New York.

With the publisher's black card slipcase. With 52 full-page illustrations in black and white by the authors. A fine copy in a faintly rubbed slipcase. Box has one slightly bruised corner but paper is not torn and is barely visible. The fold-over flap of the box was glued with the book new inside and when the flap was lifted to get the book out, it left some small pieces of flap cardboard stuck to the box back and it also pulled and tore, in 3 visible places, the inner layer of cardboard on the 1 3/4 inch W flap. When the box is closed and taped shut, this is not visible at all, but when the box flap is open it is visible because the inside of the box is white but where the top layer of paper is torn off it is cardboard colour. This area where the glue stuck to the inner layer of flap paper does not affect in any way the exterior flap paper, which is clean, white and glossy. . Vintage

From the Snows to the Seas. With Prints by J.G. Lubbock

London: Rampant Lions Press. 1986. One of 95 copies only on R.W.S. hand-made paper. Each copy signed by the artist/author. Bound by George Percival in gilt-stamped blue silk after a design by the artist, blue morocco spine. Illustrated with four triple fold-out copperplates worked by etching and aquatint. The colors are printed in intaglio and relief, and additional color is applied to some pages by hand. The typography and printing of the text is by Will Carter at the Rampant Lions Press. Page size: 14 inches x 10-1/2 inches. Mylar jacket, publisher's slipcase. The images and thoughts in this book spring from mountains spanning great segments of our sphere to wilds where trusting creatures create an idyll of Eden. Inspired by the Himalayas, the Galapagos Islands and Antarctica, the book captures the grandeur of the planet. Lubbock's previous seven books are out-of-print -- as this soon will be. The prints are stunners -- somewhat oriental in feel -- yet abstract.
See an Image.
Autograph letter signed

1/2 page. Large octavo. Addressed to an unidentified female correspondent. Dated December 5, 1986. In French. Mentioning a concert tour of Germany, Spain, Norway and Holland with his orchestral works from which he has just returned and his Turangalîla Symphony; the composer also thanks his correspondent for sending the "magnificent book" on the Virgin Mary and sends excerpts [not present] from the first two pages of the 6th movement of the symphony as per her request. . A French composer, organist and teacher, Messiaen "was a musician apart. The sources of his music may be traced on the one hand to the French organ tradition and on the other to the innovations of Debussy, Stravinsky and Bartók, but right at the start of his career he found a modal system that has a completely individual sound, and to this he remained true, even when he vastly extended the possibilities of his style after World War II. He was alone, too, among major 20th-century composers in his joyously held Catholic faith, which again was unswerving, however much he came to value non-European cultures, especially Indian and Japanese. As a teacher he instructed many of the most prominent composers of the next two generations..." "... Turangalîla [a ten-movement symphony, 1946-1948] – his biggest work so far, scored for a large orchestra with abundant percussion and solo piano (again a Loriod part) and ondes martenot—was commissioned for the Boston SO by Koussevitzky, who, being ill, had to yield the first performance to Bernstein. Despite the difficulties in presenting a work on such a scale, Turangalîla was soon being widely played and making Messiaen known to a large international audience. Reactions to it were divided. Its rapturous love music, exultant dances, scintillating colouring and extraordinary images appealed to many; others were appalled by what they considered its vulgarity..."
