The Birds (Archive of original title card maquettes for the 1963 film)

Universal City, CA: Universal Pictures, 1986. Archive of three title card maquettes hand lettered by Harold Adler for the 1963 film. Also included are two fascinating autograph letters, both elaborately designed and executed in a calligraphic style, from Adler to author, illustrator, and editor Fridolf Johnson relating to Adler's work with Hitchcock. Harold Adler was a calligrapher who created hand lettered titles on over 100 films, worked frequently with Alfred Hitchcock, and was a favorite of legendary title sequence designers Saul Bass and Pablo Ferro. In addition to "The Birds" (1963), his credits include "Comanche!" (1956), "The Man with the Golden Arm" (1955), "The Seven Year Itch" (1955), "Carmen Jones" (1954), "Psycho" (1960), "In the Heat of the Night" (1967), and "Justine" (1969). In 2012, an exhibition of Adler's work was organized by noted typographer and design historian Jill Bell at the American Advertising Federation, Kansas City. In the first letter, dated May 16, 1986, Adler describes, after touching on other topics, meeting Hitchcock and then presenting him with layout ideas for the titles. He then goes into detail regarding his answer to a question about the techniques of artist Eric Gill, stating that Hitchcock "was amazed" by this answer, and after that would "request 'to be sure to bring that nice you[ng] man along" (meaning Adler) whenever he had a job for Adler's firm. The second letter, dated June 10th, 1986, focuses almost exclusively on Adler's work on "The Birds," going into some detail regarding both the creative and technical processes of producing hand lettered titles for films. He also describes Hitchcock as "an unusual person to work with. He was a master at what he did, knew what he wanted [and] smoked the finest cigars." He then concludes the letter with some brief remarks on how his approach to title lettering evolved over the course of his career. The letters themselves are works of art, executed in a variety of inks in Adler's detailed penmanship, with Johnson's name on each in particular receiving full calligraphic treatment. Also included are draft title cards for the film, stylistically similar to each other, but much different from the titles used in the finished film. Two of the cards are marked as "camera ready" in holograph colored pencil, with titles executed in white paint on black board. The third card, photo stat on black paper, which accompanied the June 10th letter, has been annotated by Adler on both the recto and verso, explaining the in more detail the technical process of putting the lettering on film. Overall, a significant collection of material illuminating a little explored aspect of film design, with a direct and significant connection to a seminal work by a director known for personally overseeing all aspects of production. Each letter 19 x 24 inches, single leaf, rectos only. May 16th letter folded twice for mailing, June 10th letter folded three times. Two long diagonal creases to the May 16th letter, else both are Fine. Original mailing envelope for the May 16th letter included. "Camera ready" title cards 22 x 14 inches. Lightly rubbed and about Near Fine. Third card 18 x 4 inches. Near Fine.

The text was culled from 'Animate Creation,' by Rev. J.G. Woods, Vol.II Birds 1885. the text explains that the classification of birds depends largely on the shapes of their beaks or bills.         Literary Correspondence

1986-1987 1986 - A collection of letters from Waters, mostly to his literary agent, Joan Daves, as well as related ancillary materials showing Waters at work in the after-market for his writing, with opportunities for later editions and film versions. Waters wrote primarily about the American Southwest, in particular the Native American experience. His father was part Cheyenne. The first typed letter signed is from Waters to his agent, Joan Daves, dated August 24, 1986 and concerns Lesley Ann Warren's interest in optioning the film rights to The Woman at Otowi Crossing and the contract for publication of a hardcover, illustrated edition of The Man Who Killed the Deer. It is stapled to a copy of the contract, with numerous marginal corrections and a retained copy of Daves' reply, agreeing with Waters that the intended publisher (Gibbs Smith) had overreached in the contract. An included exchange between Daves and Gibbs Smith posits a simpler agreement, while a retained carbon shows Daves reaching out to Ohio University Press to confirm they had no claim to hardcover rights. The second typed letter signed is from Waters to Keith Sabin, in Daves' absence, and is dated September 29, 1986 and describes the purchasing history of Flight from Fiesta and the current unwelcome "blitz" he, Waters, is undergoing from Ritz Productions regarding theatrical rights. Waters encloses an initialed copy of the letter he wrote to Ritz Productions redirecting their overtures to Daves upon her return from Europe. Both of these letters are stapled together with retained copies of both Sabin's and Daves' replies, as well as a retained copy of an earlier letter from Sabin to Waters saying they had been approached by Ritz and the initial contact letter from Ritz with an unsigned agreement for Right of First Refusal. Also included is a letter from Fiesta publisher Clark Kimball to Daves recommending the production company. The fourth typed letter signed, from Waters to Daves, dated April 29, 1987, again describes the publishing history of Flight from Fiesta and informs Daves that the publisher, Clark Kimball, has been approached by CBS-Columbia regarding film rights, and he includes Kimball's letter. Attached are the retained copies of letters from Daves to both Waters and Kimball, admonishing all that Kimball has no role in film rights for the title, and a later letter from Kimball acquiesces. The fifth typed letter signed, from Waters to Daves (August 3, 1987), delineates an additional inquiry regarding a film option for Flight from Fiesta and several leads on optioning The Woman at Otowi Crossing should Lesley Ann Warren's option expire. Waters takes Daves to task for not responding to offers already presented, for not keeping him informed, and for being about to depart for Europe leaving him without representation: "I don't like to end our agent-client relationship after so many years, but if the overload of work at this crucial time is too much for you, I don't see any alternative." A copy of a letter to Waters at about this point from Alton Walpole shows one of the interested parties facing obstacles bringing Otowi Crossing to the screen. Also, a letter to Daves from The University of Nevada thanks Daves for sending financials on Ohio University Press's Frank Waters: A Retrospective Anthology (included), but bemoans how infrequent the agent's communiques have become. However, the Daves-Waters agent-client relationship was ongoing in October: in the sixth typed letter signed in this archive, Waters informs Daves of yet another inquiry for Flight from Fiesta and asks her advice about payment on an opportunity he has to write the text for a book of photographs to be published by Arizona Highways (likely Eternal Desert, published in 1990). As mentioned, many of the letters are stapled; most are folded for mailing; in some instances they bear the agency's routing marks or highlighting. The lot as a whole is near fine.         Between The Woods And The Water (Signed And Doodled By the Author In The Year Of Publication With The Scarce Promotional Band)

The First UK Printing published by John Murray in 1986.The book is in near FINE condition.Light pushing to the upper spine end.The corners remain sharp. If it were not for a small brown stain to the verso of the half title page which is slightly visible on the title page, the book would be Fine. The WRAPPER is complete and is in near FINE condition.Light fading to the spine colouring and a small area of rubbing to the lower front edge which blends well into the pictorial design. The very scarce Thomas Cook Travel Book Award Winner Promotional Band is complete and is in near FINE condition.Vertical crease to the rear portion. The John Craxton wrapper design looks very striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. The book has been Inscribed,Signed,Doodled,Located and Dated by the Author to the front blank end paper:'For Pam,With many many thanks and all hail!, Paddy Leigh Fermor, London, 30.10.86'.The pictorial doodle is typical with clouds, seagulls and a coastal scene. The likely dedicatee was Pam Bell (a close friend of Leigh Fermor referred to in 'The Collected Letter of Bruce Chatwin') as the book has been inscribed close to it's publication date. This title, the sequel to "A Time Of Gifts' was published late in 1986 and won the Thomas Cook Travel Book Award for the years 1986/7.This is the first time we have encountered this Promotional Band in over 10 years of selling Leigh Fermor titles - A very scarce addition and a very collectible title with such attributes.         Getting Older

Helsinki: Eurographica. 1986. First. First edition. Corners very slightly bumped else fine in stiff wrappers and fine dustwrapper as issued. One of 20 unnumbered copies "printed for the personal use of the author." Inscribed by Updike to Herb Yellin: "for Herb Yellin, All best, John". Herb Yellin was the founder and publisher of Lord John Press and the most frequent of Updike's fine press collaborators. He named his press after noting that the list of authors he wanted to publish all shared the same first name, chief among them John Updike, his favorite. Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu became the press's first book in 1977 with 10 more to follow over the next 23 years. Yellin's friendship with Updike grew with each new limited edition benefitting his already enormous Updike collection, with Updike himself contributing copies of new editions of his books - often inscribed. In a 2010 interview with Yellin he noted that Updike "...liked that if anything ever happened to his own collection, he had my collection on the opposite side of the country." A notable association. An attractively printed volume and uncommon in the U.S. .
