        White Noise.

New York: Viking Press, 1985. First edition of the author's National Book Award-winning novel. Octavo, original half cloth. Signed by Don DeLillo on the title page. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of wear. A brilliant satire of mass culture and numbing effects of technology, White Noise tells the story of Jack Gladney, a teacher of Hitler studies at a liberal arts college in Middle America. Jack and his fourth wife, Babette, bound by their love, fear of death, and four ultramodern offspring, navigate the rocky passages of family life to the background babble of brand-name consumerism. Then a lethal black chemical cloud, unleashed by an industrial accident, floats over their lives, an "airborne toxic event" that is a more urgent and visible version of the white noise engulfing the Gladneys

        Waiting to be Necklaced

1985 - Pen, ink, crayon and watercolour on paper. Signed, inscribed with the full title and dated '85 in pen in the bottom right hand corner. 30 x 20.5 cm. Although Beiles always made pen and pencil drawings from the late 30s onwards, his interest in making art intensified from the mid 80s when he was inspired by his friend William Burroughs's exhibition at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery in New York in 1988. I have a letter in my archive from the Shafrazi Gallery confirming that they had posted a catalogue to Beiles of this current show. The letter was written by Christopher Gallagher and dated May 7, 1988. Burroughs even said in an interview around this time that "a couple of shot-gun paintings and drawings taking me only a few hours can earn me more than the entire fee earned in writing a book that takes years". Beiles started to exhibit regularly in Johannesburg from the early 90s onwards and was represented by the now defunct Newtown Galleries. Artworks by Beiles are considered rare with only a couple of hundred drawings in watercolours estimated to have been produced. This harrowing image would have been taken from Apartheid TV where images of necklacing were shown during the news broadcasts, especially after the State of Emergency was declared in July 1985. The work is unframed. ONCO ( Or Nearest Cash Offer). Free shipping and packaging worldwide. Registered Airmail. Extra Charge for Courier Service. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        LLull-Tàpies

        Lonesome Dove

New York: Simon & Schuster, 1985. First edition of the author's Pulitzer-Prize winning novel. Octavo, original half cloth. Signed by Larry McMurtry on the title page. Name to the front free endpaper, some spotting to the page edges in a near fine dust jacket with a small closed tear. A love story, an adventure, an American epic, Lonesome Dove embraces all the West- legend and fact, heroes and outlaws, whores and ladies, Indians and settlers. Set in the nineteenth century, it is the story of a cattle drive from Texas to Montana and much more. It is a drive that represents for everybody involved not only a daring, even a foolhardy adventure, but a part of the American Dream- the attempt to carve out the last remaining wilderness a new life. "Everything about Lonesome Dove feels true . . . These are real people, and they are still larger than life" (Nicholas Lemann, The New York Times Book Review).
