A Mathematical Theory of Communication" in Bell System Technical Journal 27, No. 3, July 1948, pp. 379-592 with No. 4, October 1948

TWO VOLUME FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE IN HANDSOMELY RENDERED FACSIMILE WRAPS of one of the founding works on information theory, Claude Shannon's "A Mathematical Theory of Communication." In this landmark paper on information theory -- the most famous in its field -- Shannon began by "observing that the fundamental problem of communication is that of reproducing at one point either exactly or approximately a message selected at another point" (Bose, Information Theory, 49). In short, the problem was how to keep the message from becoming distorted in transit. Shannon's extraordinary idea was that basic principles of binary or digital information can be related to fundamental physical laws. Toward that end, he provided a mathematical theory for encoding information by applying a value to it -- either 0 or 1. This formulation is commonly known as the basis for digital communications. Additionally, Shannon he demonstrated that mathematics could be used to calculate the theoretical maximum amount of information carried by a communications system based upon the physical laws of thermodynamics. Shannon's work so thoroughly established the foundations of information theory that his framework and terminology remain the standard today" (ibid). "At the heart of the theory was a new conceptualization of information. To make communication theory a scientific discipline, Shannon needed to provide a precise definition of information that transformed it into a physical parameter capable of quantification. He accomplished this transformation by distinguishing information from meaning. He reserved 'meaning' for the content actually included in a particular message. He used 'information' to refer to the number of different possible messages that could be carried along a channel, depending on the message's length and on the number of choices of symbols for transmission at each point in the message. Information in Shannon's sense was a measure of orderliness (as opposed to randomness) in that it indicated the number of possible messages from which a particular message to be sent was chosen. The larger the number of possibilities, the larger the amount of information transmitted because the actual message is distinguished from a greater number of possible alternatives" (Aspray, 1985, pp. 119-122). Shannon's source coding theorem establishes entropy (the number of bits needed to encode an uncertain event) as the most fundamental measure of information. "Shannon entropy" quantifies the information contained in a message, usually in bits. Shannon's 'noisy-channel coding theorem' defines the 'channel capacity' of a communications channel as the maximum information rate (in units of information per unit time) that can be achieved with arbitrarily small error possibility. CONDITION & DETAILS: Both issues are in fine condition, with the facsimile wraps meticulously rendered. Housed in fine clamshell box.

New York: Grove Press, 1985. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. This is a very rare signed first edition, first printing of Andy Warhols critically acclaimed a: A Novel published by Grove Press, New York in 1985. Originally entitled Cock, it has also had such working titles as SPEEED KILLS, Amphootimum, Co-Pilots, UPss, Or AAI, and Twenty*Four Hours...If an encyclopedia is a concise compendium of a man\'s knowledge, Andy Warhol\'s novel is the obverse - a total experience of a daily life raised to a fever pitch of brilliancy, vagueness, hilarity, confusion, insight through the abnormally extreme personalities of his real-life characters. Measuring approximately 9 inches by 6 inches, the book is a black cloth hardback with bright silver titles in an illustrated dust jacket. "Felder combines his deep knowledge of the past and the present with a constant searching on a philosophical, human and musical level - a Gustav Mahler for the 21st century... [He] has long been recognized as a leader in his generation of American composers. His works have been featured at many of the leading international festivals for new music including Holland, Huddersfield, Darmstadt, Ars Electronica, Brussels, ISCM, North American New Music, Geneva, Ravinia, Aspen, Tanglewood, Music Factory, Bourges, Vienna Modern, IRCAM, Ars Musica, and many others, and earn continuing recognition through performance and commissioning programs by such organizations as the New York New Music Ensemble, Arditti Quartet, American Composers Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic, American Brass Quintet, and many others. Felder's work has been broadly characterized by its highly energetic profile, through its frequent employment of technological extension and elaboration of musical materials... and its lyrical qualities... [He] has received numerous grants and commissions including many awards." www.atlanticcenterforthearts.orgFelder currently holds the Birge-Cary Chair in composition at SUNY Buffalo and has been Artistic Director of the "June in Buffalo" Festival from 1985 to present; he has been the Director of the Center for 21st Century Music at the University since 2006.         CASTLE ROCK: THE STEPHEN KING NEWSLETTER [COMPLETE RUN FROM ISSUE #1 THROUGH VOL. 5 NO. 12] [DOLAN' S CADILLAC]

Bangor: Castle Rock Press / Inc 1985-1989, 1985 First editions. Magazines. Complete run [fifty-five physical issues with three of those being double issues] from Issue #1 [what would be V-1 N-1 in the sequence] through V-5 N-12. Besides all the other assorted content, DOLAN'S CADILLAC was [four years before the 1989 publication of the Lord John Press book edition] serialized in five of the early issues. Nearly all folded for mailing [some with mailing labels] else a fairly decent run [cheap paper of the tabloid issues tanned as usual]. The first four issues, in all sets of the newsletter, are physically different from the remaining 51 issues, which were done as printed tabloid newspapers, and those first four corner-stapled issues have in this set each been stamped "ORIGINAL". While individual issues are offered for sale with some regularity, complete sets seem to now be scarce.. First Edition. Soft Cover. Very Good.

Blood Meridian, or The Evening Redness in the West

New York: Random House, 1985. First edition of the author's fifth novel. Octavo, original half red cloth. Signed by Cormac McCarthy on the half title page. Fine in a fine dust jacket. An exceptional copy. Blood Meridian seems to me the authentic American apocalyptic novel, more relevant even in 2000 than it was fifteen years ago. The fulfilled renown of Moby-Dick and of As I Lay Dying is augmented by Blood Meridian, since Cormac McCarthy is the worthy disciple both of Melville and of Faulkner. I venture that no other living American novelist, not even Pynchon, has given us a book as strong and memorable as Blood Meridian" (Harold Bloom). McCarthy can only be compared with our greatest writers, with Melville and Faulkner, and this is his masterpiece" (Michael Herr).
