You may find even more astonishing true facts than I have managed to glean in thirty-five years of intensive and in-depth research." - from Foreword.         Les Échanges Malandreux

Worcester: Metacom Press, 1985. Signed limited first edition, one of 26 lettered copies "not for sale," of Edward Gorey's inspired flip book, in which readers combine characters and captions to create their own "échanges malandreux." The dialogue includes questions such as: "Is he not her second cousin once removed?," "Has anyone looked under the stairs?," and "What is the reason for your intransigence?" Possible rejoinders include: "The mere thought makes me shudder," "I think it will be best to give up the idea," and "We do not have a device for making library paste." The portraits feature a representative cast of Gorey characters: vaguely Edwardian gentlemen and ladies, servants and children, vamps and eccentrics. This copy is one of 26 reserved for the private distribution of the author and publisher, issued simultaneously with five hundred numbered copies. A fine copy of a delightful and unsettling Gorey production. Square booklet, measuring 6.5 by 6.5 inches, original brown pictorial laid paper wrappers, trifold and stitched as issued. Featuring 32 individual full-length portraits, to be mixed and matched with 32 dialogue captions.

        Glimpses [One of 15 Copies]

Northampton: Basement Press. 1985. Of a total edition of 15 numbered copies, this is Copy No. 10, and is signed by Catheryn Yum, the book's designer and printer. Laid into this copy is a photocopy of the original autograph letter from Yum to Carver's publisher, requesting permission to reprint two stories for a project for her typography class. Interestingly, she wrote to McGraw-Hill, publisher of Will You Please Be Quiet, Please?, for permission to use two stories that she did not end up using. At the bottom of the sheet, Carver has written his personal reply to her, which reads, in part: "You have my permission, and gladly, for you to use the above mentioned stories in the manner in which you describe." Yum has appended a note on the same sheet indicating that this was the only response that Carver wrote himself; the permission to use the stories she actually ended up using, which came from a book published by Knopf, came in the form of "your basic form letter from a secretary." Also laid in is a photocopy of a two-page letter she wrote to Carver after the book was finished (apparently enclosing a copy for him), thanking him for his stories and his permission, telling him a bit about herself, and identifying the tipped-in illustration as "a hand drawn lithograph printed on a hand press." Clothbound. A fine copy of one of the scarcest Carver items, with some background information about it. No copy has appeared at auction; OCLC locates only 4 copies in institutional collections. Hardcover. Fine.

        "Page blanche".

Fotografie originali FERROVIA Bologna - Pistoia. 1859/1864 Fotografo Odoardo Galli.

Axs [Attributes: Hard Cover]

(WARHOL, ANDY). Warhol, Andy. ANDY WARHOL: AMERICA - A TWICE-SIGNED ASSOCIATION COPY FROM THE ARTIST. Signed Presentation Copy from the Artist. New York: Harper & Row, Publishers, 1985. First Edition. 4to. Pictorial Wrappers. Artist Monograph. Fine. 224pp, profusely illustrated in b&w. Designed by Barbara Richer. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "From the camera that never leaves his side now comes a love letter, a remembrance, and an astonishing portrait of modern life: "America". Culled from his ten year archive, it is a work of blinding insight, a book of strange beauty and enormous contradictions. Here are the very private world of wealth and celebrity, the young Americans of today with their sexy, muscular bodies, and the street world of America's poorest people. Andy Warhol has achieved enormous popular success and critical acclaim in art, advertising, graphics, films, records, modeling, and magazine publishing. With "America", he reveals to us all over again a country and an artist we thought we knew so well. It is Andy at his funniest and most touching; it is America with all its staggering contradictions; it is an important and beautiful new work from the twentieth century's most American artist". What more can we mere mortals add about Warhol's unsettling fame, physique, and $-obsessed black and white chronicle of post-Bicentennial American life? A brand new, most handsome example of the stated 1985 first Harper & Row paperbound edition, first printing additionally BOLDLY SIGNED "Andy Warhol" vertically across the front cover and "Rena Small / Andy Warhol" on the blank page facing the table of contents - both in heavy black marker. Rena Small is a well-known Los Angeles-based artist who photographed Andy Warhol in New York on October 30th, 1985 for inclusion in her series "Artists' Hands". That was the same day of his Rizzoli Bookstore of Soho publication party for "America" at which Warhol presented and inscribed the book to her. We subsequently acquired this directly from the artist along with the illustrated handbill for the Rizzoli event laid in.         William Tillyer lithograph for Chicago International Art Exposition

London: Bernard Jacobson, 1985. Single Sheet. Very Good. William Tillyer. A William Tillyer colour lithograph printed in colour on thick hand made paper. I think paper has been especially made for this edition as it is shaped for the image and has a uneven edge. This lithograph is signed in pencil by the artist and comes from a small edition size of 50 copies, this being numbered 14. This image was used for the Chicago International Art Exposition poster in 1985, which was held at Navy Pier. The lithograph was published by Bernard Jacobson Gallery, London. At present the print is framed and it has a small dampstain, not in the print, but on the backing to the far right corner. See photograph. The item will be posted out of frame unless discussed otherwise. Size 74 x 53cm In 1984, William Tillyer traveled extensively throughout South Western America making watercolours and worked on the Bridge Mesh paintings and the Esk Bridge series of etchings. It was in 1985 that Tillyer had a solo show at Roger Ramsay Gallery, Chicago.
