Far Side of The World, The

London: Collins, 1984. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine-. First Impression of the scarce tenth installment in the author's popular Aubrey-Maturin series. 8vo: [8],371,[1]pp. Publisher's forest green cloth, spine lettered in gilt; second issue illustrated dust jacket priced £9.95 with publisher's sticker (because of the printer's pricing error, most jackets were price-clipped and repriced). A Fine, apparently unread copy (dust-soiled top edge, toning endemic to text block); about Fine jacket (spine panel with just a degree of lightening to top third only of spine panel). An uncommonly collectible copy. The Aubrey–Maturin series is a sequence of nautical historical novels—20 completed and one unfinished—set during the Napoleonic Wars and centering on the friendship between Captain Jack Aubrey of the Royal Navy and his ship's surgeon (and spy), Stephen Maturin. This tenth installment continues the story of Aubrey's exploits during the American War of 1812. The novel provided some episodes for the 2003 Peter Weir film, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

Orbis terraqueus in tabulis geographicis et hydrographicis descriptus, ... Strassbourg, "ïn officina libraria editoris" [= bookshop of the compiler Paulli], 1670. Small 8vo (18 x 11 cm). Boards (ca. 1700?).

Besterman, WBB 1157; Koeman, Collections of maps and atlasses in the Netherlands, p. 29; Meurer, "Orbis terraqueus ...", in: Imago mundi, 36 (1984), pp. 64-65; Phillips, List of works relating to cartography, p. 70. First and only edition of the first carto-bibliography, systematically listing over 2200 maps and sea charts, mostly arranged geographically. The structure is clearly presented in the hierarchical table of contents, which divides the book into three main parts, each with its own pagination and series of quire signatures. The first part covers maps of the ancient world, sacred and secular. The second part gives the main catalogue of geographical maps, briefly covering the world and the arctic before continuing with Europe, arranged by countries and sub-divided by duchy, province, department or county, followed by Africa, Asia and America. It covers maps by the 16th and 17th century's leading publishers of atlases and single-sheet maps, including Ortelius, Hondius, Blaeu, Janssonius, Visscher, Sanson, De Wit, Danckerts and Allard, but also includes maps from more fugitive sources like local histories. The last part describes some 130 sea charts, pilot guides and sea atlases, mainly by Goos, Van Loon and Theunis Jacobsz. With a marginal stain in the corner of the first 2 quires. Binding somewhat rubbed and hinges reinforced. Good copy of a rare pioneering work of carto-bibliography.

        El Libro de las Profesias

Testimonio CompañÃa Editorial y el Patrimonio Nacional, Madrid 1984 - Madrid: Testimonio CompañÃÂa Editorial y el Patrimonio Nacional, 1984. Facsimile. Hardcover. Fine. Quarto. Bound in decorative leather with Moorish-styled brass accent studs on board. 30x22 cm. Housed in a grey and black slipcase. Limited edition, this is number 384/750 (of which only 683 were for sale). Written after his third new world voyage (1501-1505), it is a journal of apocalyptic prophecies and observations by the aging explorer as he neared the end of his life. An impeccably done exact replica of the original handwritten copy housed in the Biblioteca Capitular and Columbina in Seville. The artists who prepared the work under the direction of reknowned book artist Cesar Olmos faithfully and painstakingly recreated every nuance from the original: tears, edgewear, silverfishing, and - yes - even tape repairs. A marvellous book, as worthy as an artists' book as a glimpse into history. Does not include the companion study volume. In fine condition (naturally excepting the deliberately contrived "flaws") in a slipcase with one bumped corner and minor edgewear.

Second state of the 16 sheet map of the drainage sluices in Kennemerland and West-Friesland ("Uytwaterende Sluysen in Kennemerlant en West-Frieslant") made by surveyor Johannes Dou (1615-1682), who in 1660 was ordered by the district water board to make a general map of its territory in the northern half of the province of Holland. After a preparation of twenty years, Dou completed his assignment with the presentation of a huge map of the water district in 16 sheets in 1680. In 1682 he delivered a copy of this map in four sheets, as well as a copy in one sheet. All three versions of the map were engraved by Koenraat Decker (1651-1709), an apprentice of Romeyn de Hooghe, and Abraham Deur, though their names are only mentioned on the map in 16 sheets.Hameleers records the numerous states of the copperplates for these maps, issued both separately and as a set of three maps. They are all equally rare. Although the topographical contents of the maps never changed, there are small differences in the coats of arms of the gouvernors of the district water board on the different states. Very good copy in modern colouring and unassembled.

T hoogh-heemraetschap vande uytwaterende sluysen in Kennemerlandt ende West-Vrieslandt. [Amsterdam, Hendrik de Leth, 1729]. Large map in 16 numbered loose sheets (plate size each: ca. 44.5 x 58 cm; whole map: ca. 170 x 223 cm), engraved by Koenraedt Decker and Abraham Deur, in modern colouring. With the 6 coats of arms of Aris vander Mieden, Floris Wil, Gysbert Ramp, Gerrit Waremenhuysen, Gerard Fannius and Johan Baert, and the general coat of arms of the district water board on top.

      - Donkersloot-de Vrij 751; Hameleers (1984) 29; cf. R. Sluijter, "Johannes Dou (1615-1682), Landmeter van Rijnland" in Caert-Thresoor XVI, (1997), pp. 1-9.
