Lucien Pissarro (20 February 1863 - 10 July 1944) was a landscape painter, printmaker, wood engraver and designer and printer of fine books. His landscape paintings employ techniques of Impressionism and Neo-Impressionism, but he also exhibited with Les XX. Apart from his landscapes he painted a few still lifes and family portraits. Until 1890 he worked in France, but thereafter was based in Britain. Pissarro was born on 20 February 1863 in Paris. He was the oldest of seven children; the son of Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro and his wife Julie (née Vellay). He studied with his father and--like his siblings Georges and Félix--he spent his formative years surrounded by his father's fellow artists such as Claude Monet and Pierre Auguste Renoir who frequented the Pissarro home. He was influenced by Georges Seurat and Paul Signac. In 1886, he exhibited at the last of the Impressionist exhibitions. From 1886 to 1894 he exhibited with the Salon des Independents. He first visited Britain in 1870-1 during the Franco-Prussian War. He returned in 1883-4, and in 1890 settled permanently in London. The story has been adapted several times for the cinema. The main character, Sam Spade, appears in this novel only and in three lesser known short stories, yet is widely cited as the crystallizing figure in the development of the hard-boiled private detective genre. Raymond Chandler's character Philip Marlowe, for instance, was strongly influenced by Hammett's Spade. Spade was a departure from Hammett's nameless detective, The Continental Op. Sam Spade combined several features of previous detectives, most notably his cold detachment, keen eye for detail, and unflinching determination to achieve his own justice. In this story, Sam Spade and Miles Archer are hired … [Click Below for Full Description]

Dahl, Roald; Illustrated by Quentin Blake
Jonathan Cape, London, 1983. First edition of Dahl's Whitbread Award-winning children's novel, illustrated by Quentin Blake. Octavo, original cloth. Boldly signed by Roald Dahl on the half-title page. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Dahl's The Witches centers on the experiences of a young British boy and his Norwegian grandmother in a world where child-hating societies of witches secretly exist in every country. "Don't be fooled by those witches with their black hats, black cloaks and broomsticks, though, those are not REAL WITCHES. Real witches are exceedingly difficult to spot in the wild and dress in ordinary clothes, looking very much like ordinary people." Dahl's vital indicators for spotting a real witch include facts like they always wear gloves, they have no toes, are bald as boiled eggs and they have blue spit. "Dahl seems to have made an art form of the rediscovery that children tend to warm to the sorts of horror that make lesser mortals (adults) squirm with displeasure. He is undeniably special" (Connolly, 104). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

SARTRE, Jean-Paul
Paris: Éditions Gallimard, 1983. Octavo. Original cream stiff paper wrappers, spine and front cover lettered in green and blue. Modern bookplate to front inside cover; a very good copy. First edition, posthumously published, of Sartre's unfinished sequel volume to L'être et le néant. The final lines of that work announced the present one; "Toutes ces questions, qui nous renvoient à la réflexion pure et non complice, ne peuvent trouver leur réponse que sur le terrain moral. Nous y consacrerons un prochain ouvrage." Sartre had begun work in 1947-1948 on this study of morality, but it remained unfinished at his death, and is here published for the first time. Arlette Elkaïm Sartre, his adopted daughter and literary executor, states in her introductory remarks that Sartre had always wanted his unfinished philosophical writings to only be published after his death. "Publíes après ma mort, ces textes restent inachevés, tels qu'ils sont, obscurs, puisque j'y formule des idées qui ne sont pas toutes développées. Ce sera au leacteur d'interpréter où elles auraient pu me mener." (Situations X). One of 38 copies printed on Hollande, this copy number 24. Not in Contat and Rybalka. [Attributes: First Edition]

Walcott, Derek; Brodsky, Joseph (Introduction); Bearden, Romare (Artist)
New York: (Limited Editions Club), (1983). Bearden, Romare. Limited Edition. No. 351 of 2000 copies, folio size, 231 pp., signed by Derek Walcott and Romare Bearden, with LEC Monthly Letter. Derek Walcott (b. 1930), although trained as a painter, turned to writing as a young man, having his first published poem in a newspaper at the age of fourteen. He was recognised as a major poet in 1962 and in 1992 was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature; the Nobel committee spoke of his work as "a poetic oeuvre of great luminosity, sustained by a historical vision, the outcome of a multicultural commitment." Walcott's writing is wonderfully paired with the colourful art of Romare Bearden (1911-1988), an artist and writer who created eight original lithographs for this work, with 250 copies of each lithograph being produced (plus some additional); Bearden also designed the binding material for the book. ___DESCRIPTION: Full pictorial cloth designed by Romare Bearden, featuring a painting of the sea, hills, and bright Caribbean sun, full-page colour lithographs by Bearden throughout, some as double-page spreads; type Monotype Bembo, folio size (12.25" by 9.75), pagination: [i-viii] ix-xix [1-4] 5-211 [1 colophon], one of 2000 copies, this number 351, signed by Derek Walcott and Romare Bearden on the colophon. With the LEC Monthly Letter, one sheet folded once, with a horizontal crease for mailing. Dante; Phillips, Tom (Artist and Translator)
London: Talfourd Press, 1983. Limited Edition. No. 90 of 100 copies (total edition approximately 185), elephant folio size, 432 pp., signed by Tom Phillips. Tom Phillips (b. 1937), an Oxford graduate, is one of the most prominent artists working today and his work is represented in most major collections of modern art around the world. He was inspired to create his visually stunning verison of Dante when he found a "lavish, red, gilded edition of Dante's 'Inferno' illustrated by Gustave Dore". His vision for this version was "to make the book a container for the energy usually expended on large scale paintings. The artist thus tries to reveal the artist in the poet and the poet helps to uncover / release the poet in the artist". As the LA Times wrote when reviewing the trade edition, "there is no doubt that Tom Phillips has captured Dante for our time. His prodigious achievement is not so much illustration as it is visual commentary, a fidelity to Dante's spirit at the occasional expense of the literal action of the poem." Mr. Phillips spent seven years creating this livre d'artiste, published in an edition of "approximately" 185 copies, 100 of which were sold in sheets as a boxed set. For his illustration and providing a new translation of the "Inferno" Phillips received the Frances Williams Memorial Prize in 1983; he also made a TV version of the Inferno with Peter Greenaway which won them jointly as directors the Italia prize. (n.b., above info from Mr. Phillips' web site and Wiki.) ___DESCRIPTION: Presented as unbound sheets contained in two hand-made buckram boxes, wit … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cisneros, Sandra
Arte Publico Press, Houston, TX, 1983. 103 pages. One of the most important and popular books in the Chicano literary canon. The first edition was published in an edition of just 500 copies (according to the publisher). Due to problems during the copyediting process, there are several textual variants among the early Arte Publico Press printings. First edition (first printing). Very good in wrappers (paperback). This book is notoriously fragile and shows wear easily. This copy has a few creases and some light scuffing. It does not have the award sticker found on many copies. Signed by the author on the title page. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]
