         The Place of Dead Roads

NY: Holt, Rinehart, Winston. (1983). The second volume of the trilogy that includes Cities of the Red Night and The Western Lands. Inscribed by the author, this time to Bob and Donna Jackson, "charter members of the Johnson family, with memories of hospitality." The dust jacket flap copy writes "The original title of this book was The Johnson Family, a turn-of-the-century expression used to designate good bums and thieves, which was later elaborated into a code of conduct." Kim Carsons, the protagonist of this book, is a Johnson, and an "agent of the Johnson code." Fine in a fine dust jacket, with just a tiny nick at the crown. One of the better inscriptions we've seen in one of Burroughs' later titles. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine.

STICK. REVISED FIRST DRAFT OF THE SCREENPLAY OF THE SAME NAME

Universal City Studios, Inc., 1983., Universal City - Revised first draft of the screenplay. 4to. 8 1/2" x 11" stiff, green printed wrappers, 254 brad-bound pages. The screenplay is signed by Elmore Leonard on the title page. Fine, bright copy. The 1985 film starred Burt Reynolds and was also directed by him. During the filming, Leonard became dissatisfied with Reynold's interpretation of the novel and in a five-page photocopied 1984 letter to the director that is laid-in, he weighed in at length on why he was disappointed, and says in part : "What happens is that when I'm writing I see real people and hear real people talking. But when I view I see, too often, actors acting, actors hitting the wrong word, mugging, overstating or elaborating on a punch line, ad-libbing cliches, setting a record for the frequent use of 'asshole.' I hear what seems to me too many beats between exchanges, pauses for reactions, smiles for the benefit of the audience -- like saying, get it? --- or sneers or wide-eyed looks that I don't see in real life." Fine, bright, unused copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

         Rage

UK First Edition, First Printing (New English Library, 1983). A scarce first edition and the first Stephen King wrote under the 'Richard Bachman' pseudonym. The novel was first published in the US in 1977 and was later included in the hardcover omnibus 'The Bachman Books', published in 1985. Given that the novel describes a school shooting, it has been associated with actual high school shootings that occurred in the 80s and 90s. In response, Stephen King allowed the book to go out of print in 1997 and later published an anti-firearms essay in 2013 under the title 'Guns'. In very fine, unread condition. Free from tears and creases.

         Carrie Fisher; Photograph, Signed

1983. Very good. Ps. Sensational, original presentation color photograph (16" X 20") of Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia, in her slave costume. Boldly inscribed by Fisher, in black ink, to her psychiatrist, Dr. Arnold Klein, "For my own crazy. Who loves you darling [?] Guess again. Princess Leia. Opiates for sure." With the original hologram sticker ("Officially Licensed Star Wars Photograph") in the lower left corner. 2 dozen surface scratches, else very good. Framed. If you like this sort of thing, this is the sort of thing you'll like. My take? Carrie's Leia is one of the 2, late 1970s, world-wide, magnetic babe fantasies (see page 19 in this catalog for the other, but, needless to say, we don't number our pages). And speaking of babes, when we do employment interviews at Biblioctopus, we give the women a bite-sized Snickers. If they take the wrapper off before eating it, we make them catalogers. If they eat it with the wrapper still on, they get hired for Security.

Telex Persan: In The Name Of Revolution ("telex Iran")

Paris, France: Contrejour(1983). First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 104 pages. Retrospective collection of photographs. One of the greatest photography books of the 20th century. The First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, including the Aperture Edition, which is based on it. The First Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Gilles Peress and Claude Nori: Oversize-volume format. Glossy pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs and text by Gilles Peress. His telexes are brilliantly reproduced at the bottom of the images, and give an urgency not only to the photographs but to the life of one restless photojournalist living in a foreign land from day to day. Essay by Gholam-Hossein Sa'edi appended at the end. Printed on pristine-white, thick uncoated stock paper in Paris, France to the highest standards. In publisher's original inner plastic and outer paper shrinkwrap. Without DJ, as issued. Presents, in its ultimate collectible format, Gilles Peress' "Telex Persan". The greatest photographic account ever produced by a Western photojournalist of the Iranian post-revolutionary situation. Peress was appalled by the one-sided and heavily propagandistic American coverage of the Iranian hostage crisis. With money from the National Endowment for the Arts, he flew to Iran on virtually a whim and photographed what he saw, experienced, and felt during a five-week period, from December 1979 through January 1980. The resulting images were lavished with praise and with a rare unanimity: "A book of brilliant visual nervousness between covers" (Cornell Capa). "I appreciate so much the visual strength of Gilles Peress' photographs. They depict an Iran so different from the one I knew through reading and my travels" (Henri Cartier-Bresson). Apart from the sheer vitality of the images, the book has become a landmark in photographic book design, and has lost none of its daring innovativeness, impeccable beauty, and palpable immediacy. There is a fluidity to Peress' images that could only have come from his intuitive genius. Peress may never have read Canetti's great book on crowds, "Crowds And Power". But his book is the closest thing photography has ever achieved to capturing groups in action. "To the crowd in its nakedness everything seems a Bastille" (Elias Canetti). An absolute "must-have" title for Gilles Peress collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the front free endpaper by Gilles Peress. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. It is also magnificently titled, signed, and dated in metallic-silver pen-marker on the publisher's outer black paper wrap by the photographer: "Telex: Persan Gilles Peress 2006". The signature glows radiantly against the light. This title is a great photography book. As far as we know, this is the only such signed, titled, and dated copy of the First Edition/First Printing available online, is still in the publisher's original shrinkwrap (both the inner plastic and the outer paper), and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 100 plates. Gilles Peress' "Telex: Iran" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest photojournalists of our time. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER GILLES PERESS TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 3931141365.
