        War All the Time.

Santa Barbara: Black Sparrow Press,, 1984. Poems 1981-1984. Octavo. Patterned cloth spine with printed title label, tan cloth sides with titles and decoration in blue, black, grey, orange and yellow, orange endpapers. With the original plain acetate dust jacket. Gentle dent to the top edge, the acetate jacket very slightly creased in places, but an excellent copy. First edition, special unnumbered "Presentation Copy" from the 126 numbered copies signed by the author and containing an original painting (each different, this showing a tortured green face and signed "BUK") tipped in, this copy additionally inscribed by the author facing the title page, "For Arthur Applebaum - I always feel like a bum around a gentleman like you. If the world had more like you we wouldn't be in such a bad fix. Sincerely, Charles Bukowski" and accompanied by an original sketch of Bukowski's signature man-with-bottle. This is a superlativey copy of Bukowski's later collection, and a particularly warm and respectful inscription from the notoriously grouchy poet.

Nutcracker.

New York: Crown Publishers, 1984. First edition. Oblong quarto, original cloth, illustrated. Translated by Ralph Manheim. Inscribed by the author on the half-title page with a large drawing of the Nutcracker, "For Herb, who is the original Drosselmeier, and who inspired me--always! happy Nutcracker!" The recipient was Herb Hosmer, a close personal friend of Sendak's. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of wear. The tale of Nutcracker, written by E.T.A. Hoffmann in 1816, has fascinated and inspired artists, composers, and audiences for over two hundred years. This beautiful book preserves the compelling vision of Hoffman's classic Christmas tale that acclaimed illustrator Maurice Sendak created for the Pacific Northwest Ballet. "A classic, new and complete. One of the ten best illustrated children's books of the year" (New York Times Book Review).

Choice and Consequence: Perspectives of an Errant Economist.

Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 1984. First edition of the Nobel Prize-winning economist's important compilation of essays. Octavo, original cloth. Warmly inscribed by Thomas Schelling on the title page. Near fine in a very good dust jacket with light rubbing. With an ingenious, often startling approach, Thomas Schelling brings new perspectives to problems ranging from drug abuse, abortion, and the value people put on their lives to organized crime, airplane hijacking, and automobile safety. One chapter is a clear and elegant exposition of game theory as a framework for analyzing social problems. Another plays with the hypothesis that our minds are not only our problem-solving equipment but also the organ in which much of our consumption takes place. What binds together the different subjects is the author's belief in the possibility of simultaneously being humane and analytical, of dealing with both the momentous and the familiar. Choice and Consequence was written for the curious, the puzzled, the worried, and all those who appreciate intellectual adventure. "Whether one is looking for evidence and insights on the rationality or the irrationality of man, Choice and Consequence is one of the very best places to look... Mr. Schelling's book is a superb place to get a sense of both the need for and the dangers of the assumption of rationality" (New York Times).

London: Collins, 1984. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine-. First Impression of the scarce tenth installment in the author's popular Aubrey-Maturin series. 8vo: [8],371,[1]pp. Publisher's forest green cloth, spine lettered in gilt; second issue illustrated dust jacket priced £9.95 with publisher's sticker (because of the printer's pricing error, most jackets were price-clipped and repriced). A Fine, apparently unread copy (dust-soiled top edge, toning endemic to text block); about Fine jacket (spine panel with just a degree of lightening to top third only of spine panel). An uncommonly collectible copy. The Aubrey–Maturin series is a sequence of nautical historical novels—20 completed and one unfinished—set during the Napoleonic Wars and centering on the friendship between Captain Jack Aubrey of the Royal Navy and his ship's surgeon (and spy), Stephen Maturin. This tenth installment continues the story of Aubrey's exploits during the American War of 1812. The novel provided some episodes for the 2003 Peter Weir film, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

Besterman, WBB 1157; Koeman, Collections of maps and atlasses in the Netherlands, p. 29; Meurer, "Orbis terraqueus ...", in: Imago mundi, 36 (1984), pp. 64-65; Phillips, List of works relating to cartography, p. 70. First and only edition of the first carto-bibliography, systematically listing over 2200 maps and sea charts, mostly arranged geographically. The structure is clearly presented in the hierarchical table of contents, which divides the book into three main parts, each with its own pagination and series of quire signatures. The first part covers maps of the ancient world, sacred and secular. The second part gives the main catalogue of geographical maps, briefly covering the world and the arctic before continuing with Europe, arranged by countries and sub-divided by duchy, province, department or county, followed by Africa, Asia and America. It covers maps by the 16th and 17th century's leading publishers of atlases and single-sheet maps, including Ortelius, Hondius, Blaeu, Janssonius, Visscher, Sanson, De Wit, Danckerts and Allard, but also includes maps from more fugitive sources like local histories. The last part describes some 130 sea charts, pilot guides and sea atlases, mainly by Goos, Van Loon and Theunis Jacobsz. With a marginal stain in the corner of the first 2 quires. Binding somewhat rubbed and hinges reinforced. Good copy of a rare pioneering work of carto-bibliography.

        El Libro de las Profesias

Testimonio CompañÃa Editorial y el Patrimonio Nacional, Madrid 1984 - Madrid: Testimonio CompañÃÂa Editorial y el Patrimonio Nacional, 1984. Facsimile. Hardcover. Fine. Quarto. Bound in decorative leather with Moorish-styled brass accent studs on board. 30x22 cm. Housed in a grey and black slipcase. Limited edition, this is number 384/750 (of which only 683 were for sale). Written after his third new world voyage (1501-1505), it is a journal of apocalyptic prophecies and observations by the aging explorer as he neared the end of his life. An impeccably done exact replica of the original handwritten copy housed in the Biblioteca Capitular and Columbina in Seville. The artists who prepared the work under the direction of reknowned book artist Cesar Olmos faithfully and painstakingly recreated every nuance from the original: tears, edgewear, silverfishing, and - yes - even tape repairs. A marvellous book, as worthy as an artists' book as a glimpse into history. Does not include the companion study volume. In fine condition (naturally excepting the deliberately contrived "flaws") in a slipcase with one bumped corner and minor edgewear.
