Death of a Salesman, Certain Private Conversations in Two Acts and a Requiem

New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1984. Limited Edition. Leather. Fine. Baskin, Leonard. no. 1107 of 1500, 4to - over 9.75" - 12" tall, 167 pp., signed by author and illustrator. Arthur Miller was an American playwright, essayist, and figure in the twentieth-century American Theatre. In Miller's more than thirty plays, which have won him a Pulitzer Prize and multiple Tony Awards, he puts in question "death and betrayal and injustice and how we are to account for this little life of ours." For nearly six decades, Miller has been creating characters that wrestle with power conflicts, personal and social responsibility, the repercussions of past actions, and the twin poles of guilt and hope. (N. B. info from The National Endowment for the Humanities website). ***ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR: Leonard Baskin (1922-2000) was an artistic genius whose works almost defy categorization. Eminent in sculpting, illustration, printmaking and also as a typographer and printer, he pursued multiple art forms all of which have, as an underlying thread, social consciousness and a high regard for humanity (N.B., above information from the website of the Galerie St. Etienne). Mr. Baskin founded The Gehenna Press in 1942 while at Yale University, taking his inspiration from William Blake's example as both a poet and an artist/bookmaker. ***DESCRIPTION: Bound by Gray Parrot in full rust-brown Nigerian goatskin with gilt lettering on the spine, five tissue-guarded etchings by Leonard Baskin; printed by the Wild Carrot Letterpress, set in American and English monotype Bulmer on mould-made Cartiere Enrico Magnani paper; pagination: (5) - (165), blank (166), colophon (167); 10.5" tall, signed by author Arthur Miller and illustrator Leonard Baskin, Limited Edition no. 1107 of 1500; slipcase bound in grey paper with gilt lettering on the spine. ***CONDITION: Book is in fine condition with the leather binding smooth and supple, the colour on the spine deep (not sunned), corners straight and unrubbed, solid hinges and a strong text block, clean and bright inside and entirely free of prior owner markings. The slipcase is in near fine condition, strong and sturdy with some wear to corners and opening, a bump to the top left corner and very slight bump to bottom right corner. ***CITATION: LEC no. 540. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         MASEKELA ALONG WITH THE IMPRESSIVE KALAHARI

MEDU Art Ensemble 1984 - Lithograph. Unique. 50 x 42 cm. This rare poster formed part of the exhibition at the Johannesburg Art Gallery.Illustrated in Thami Mnyele and MEDU Art Ensemble Retrosepctive. Johannesburg Art Gallery. 2009. (see page 92). Due to the fact that Thami Mnyele and 13 other cultural workers were murdered in Gabarone , Botswana by the SADF in the early hours of 14 June 1985 in a covert cross-border raid MEDU ceased to exist from this day forward. Their archives and workshops were destroyed and/or confiscated and brought back to South Africa as examples of communist inspired "art treason". As a result very few original posters survive today, in some cases one estimates less than 5 copies. In some cases only 50 or 80 copies were printed which were all made by hand and were usually silkscreened. Also Illustrated "The rationalism of nationalism?" published by Warren Siebrits, Johannesburg in 2008. pg 22 and is the exact poster used for the exhibition and making of the catalogue. This item is sold together with a copy of both books. The poster is in very good condition. Photos on request. ONCO (Or Nearest Cash Offer). Free Shipping Worldwide. Registered Airmail.         Sting & Trudie Styler at a party in Neasden following a Police concert at Wembley, New Year's Eve. 31/12/1984

745 x 520mm. Giclée Print using Archival pigment inks on Hahnemüle Fine Art Pearl 285gsm paper. Limited edition of 10 numbered copies signed by the photographer. Alan Davidson is a press photographer based in London for more than 30 years, Alan has photographed the rich, the famous, the before-they-were-famous to those that have fallen from grace. Going through his vast archive, with new treasures found within the old brown manilla envelopes, reads like a who's who of the great and good (and the very bad) of London society. Cinema stars rub shoulders with pop stars, royalty with politicians. Working from the late 1960s to the present day Alan remembers the days before celebrities became surrounded by 30 young publicists and before there were 50 photographers at every event you went to, allowing him to take intimate and relaxed portraits, unlike the anodyne syndicated press shots of today.

The first Polish underground comic, the story of the first 500 days of Solidarity, the first independent trade union in the Soviet Bloc. It was created by Wojciech Starzynski, Andrzej Witwicki written by Janowi Markowi Owsinskiemu and drawn by Jacek Fedorowicz. The comic became very popular in Poland and also outside the country and had several reissues and reprints already in the year of the first edition. It was officially published only in 1989. The action of the comics begins on August 7, 1980, with the dismissal of Anna Walentynowicz, a worker of the Lenin Shipyard in Gdansk for participation in the illegal trade union. This ignited a strike at the shipyard, and set off a wave of strikes in Poland, which led to the establishment of "Solidarnosci" (Solidarity), the first independent trade union in the Soviet Bloc which was not controlled by a communist party and later it had a crucial role in the peaceful transition of the communist Poland into the parliamentary democracy. The co-founder and leader of the movement was Lech Walesa, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983 and served as the first popularly elected President of Poland from 1990 to 1995.         Autograph Note Concerning The Jesus and Mary Chain's First Single "Upside Down"

[London] 1984 - Holograph note written in black ink on both sides of a single sheet of lined notebook paper. Approximately 150 words. Near fine with light vertical fold, tiny single tear at the foredge, and top edge with scattered remnant from being torn from a spiral notebook. Original Autograph Letter Signed from The Jesus and Mary Chain lead singer Jim Reid to Creation Record's Alan McGee, the man who would sign the band to their first record deal and become their manager, probably tendered with the master tape of the band's first demo/single ("Upside Down") in the hopes of gaining attention. According to Dave Thompson's book Alternative Rock: "They recorded another demo and mailed it to the then-tiny indy Creation Records, in the hope of getting a gig at label head Alan McGee's Living Room club. He was impressed, not only booking the band, but also issuing their first single." The note outlines the problems with equipment, financing, and engineers they experienced during the recording: "We didn't have very much money so we went into an 8 track studio and recorded it live (more or less) but it sounded fucking awful. The guitar sound was terrible and the whole thing was very tame. Mainly because of the stupid bastard engineer who didn't understand what we were looking for. . Hope you like it. It is called 'Upside Down' and was written by Jim Reid and William Reid." The letter ends with a list of band members, including original drummer Murray Dalglish who left the band at the end of 1984 in a dispute over money. A humorous and pivotal letter that led to the band signing with Creation and ultimately to their debut album Psycho Candy, one of the seminal indy albums of the 1980s.

Etienne). Mr. Baskin founded The Gehenna Press in 1942 while at Yale University, taking his inspiration from William Blake's example as both a poet and an artist/bookmaker.***DESCRIPTION: Bound by Gray Parrot in full rust-brown Nigerian goatskin with gilt lettering on the spine, five tissue-guarded etchings by Leonard Baskin; printed by the Wild Carrot Letterpress, set in American and English monotype Bulmer on mould-made Cartiere Enrico Magnani paper; pagination: (5) - (165), blank (166), colophon (167); 10.5" tall, signed by author Arthur Miller and illustrator Leonard Baskin, Limited Edition no. 1107 of 1500; slipcase bound in grey paper with gilt lettering on the spine.***CONDITION: Book is in fine condition with the leather binding smooth and supple, the colour on the spine deep (not sunned), corners straight and unrubbed, solid hinges and a strong text block, clean and bright inside and entirely free of prior owner markings.
