METAMORPHOSIS Written By Franz Kafka. Translated by Willa and Edwin Muir. Introduced by Robert Coles

New York At the Wild Carrot Letterpress for the Limited Editions Club [1984] - Unique Inscribed copy of this Limited Edition of 1500 hand-numbered copies signed by the artist, José Luis Cuevas. THIS COPY WITH ADDITIONAL INSCRIPTION AND ORIGINAL PEN AND INK DRAWING BY THE ARTIST. With etchings on tissue-guarded plates and drawings by José Luis Cuevas created specifically for this publication. Large 8vo, hand-cased at the Gray Parrot bindery in quarter gray-brown calf over textured paper-covered boards, the spine lettered in gilt within a blank embossed frame, in the original slipcase. xii, 61, [1]. Internally a pristine copy, the binding also fine but for a light touch of sun and one small abrasion to the calf of the spine, the slipcase still very nice with only minor age evidence. UNIQUE INSCRIBED COPY WITH AN ORIGINAL DRAWING BY JOSÉ LUIS CUEVAS. The famous Mexican Surrealist has inscribed this copy "La Vida de un hobre . with a bold signature and a very large pen and ink drawing filling much of the front blank page. The book itself is a fine production, printed on mold-made paper specially produced for this edition by Cartiere Enrico Magnani. It was designed by Ben Shiff, set in American Monotype and the etchings were printed at the Water Street Press. In all Kafka’s surreal fable is given a very contemporary and highly artistic twist, making this one of the most original and striking productions for the club for quite some time. The Lost Ones. Seven Etchings by Charles Klabunde

Stamford: The New Overbrook Press. 1984. This copy in a unique binding by Jack & Emma Craib: full black morocco with mother-of-pearl onlays forming design of characters from the play climbing out of the cylinder tube in which Beckett has set the play. The design reveals itself as a pictorial image only with the use of an anamorphoscope which is a 6 inch silver tube sitting on top of one of the marble onlays. Limited to 250 copies on Rives, each copy signed by Samuel Beckett. Each of the seven etchings is hand-numbered and signed by the artist, Charles Klabunde. Charles Klabunde, master engraver, was born in Nebraska where he spent the first two formative decades of his life. He received his MFA at the University of Iowa where his unusual talents were discovered by master print-maker Mauricio Lazansky who invited Klabunde to join his Print Workshop. Following his one-man exhibition at The Minneapolis Institute of Art, the artist moved to New York where he established his own printmaking studio and taught at Cooper Union. His work was prominently featured in the 1969 Associated American Artists' "New Talent in Printmaking" Exhibition and in 1970 in "five New York Printmakers" at the Whitney Museum of American Art. In 1971, he received the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship. His works are represented in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, The Victoria and Albert Museum, The National Gallery, The Art Institute of Chicago, the Bibliotheque Nationale etc. Klabunde's imagery and iconography, although highly individualistic, is often traced from the work of Bosch, Durer, Breughel, Callot, Rembrandt, Blake, Goya, Meryon, Redon, Klinger, Ensor, Magritte, Klee and Picasso. Samuel Beckett received the Nobel Prize in 1969 and great attention was focused on his next work, THE LOST ONES, which was his most sustained narrative to have appeared for many years. "Inside a flattened cylinder fifty metres round and sixteen high" live Beckett's lost people. Their relentless search for an escape from the cylinder gives THE LOST ONES a tragic force as a mirror of our own existence. Beckett requested that The New Overbrook Press edition include certain alterations to THE LOST ONES which make it the definitive version of his work. The author translated the text from the original French version, LE DEPEUPLEUR. The publisher, Charles Altschul, designed this limited edition as the inaugural offering of The New Overbrook Press. A graduate of Yale University, he has received numerous awards for his fine printing and bookmaking.
See an Image.
The Bookbindings of T. J. Cobden-Sanderson: A Study of his Work 1884-1893

(London: British Library, 1984). Quarto. xii, 407pp. Illustrated throughout with a color frontispiece and black & white photographs showing examples of bindings. More than a bibliography, this volume provides insight into T. J. Cobden-Sanderson’s development and influence as an artist, and gives detailed descriptive entries for each binding. An essential work on the art of bookbinding, centering on one of its most influential figures. This copy has been specially bound in a striking designer binding by Sally Lou Smith. The binding is full chestnut morocco with a subtle diagonal striation in the grain. Rows of irregular quadrilateral shapes follow the top and bottom edges of the covers and extend across the upper and lower boards. The shapes are onlaid into cutouts of russet morocco and are densely decorated with gilt-tooled flowers, leaves, and gouges (short curved lines). These design elements cleverly reference the work of Cobden-Sanderson and specific tools that he used, as depicted in the appendix of the book, while, at the same time, becoming part of Smith's own innovative, contemporary aesthetic. On the spine, the cutout shapes bear the title and author in gilt lettering. Doublures of russet morroco are decorated with double-ruled outlines of the quadrilaterals, and diagonal-striped Japanese paper flyleaves echo the texture of the morocco. Signed with initials to the rear doublure. Housed in a brown cloth box backed in gilt-titled chestnut morocco. Extremely fine. A.e.g. Smith was a fellow and President of Designer Bookbinders, renowned as both a binder and influential teacher.

Typed Letter Signed (TLS) with its original stamped envelope.

      - A 1-page typed letter written 28 April, 1984 and signed by Robert A. Heinlein: "Dear Mr. Montroll, An ever-increasing flood of mail forced me to choose between writing letters and writing fiction. But I read each letter sent to me and check its answer. Your letter was most welcome!--loaded with friendliness and with no requests or demands. You suggested that no answer was expected but I must tell you how much it pleased me. I wish you calm seas, following winds, and a happy voyage through life. Sincerely yours, Robert A. Heinlein." Robert Anson Heinlein (1907 – 1988) was an American science fiction writer. Often called the "Dean of science fiction writers", he was one of the most influential and controversial authors of the genre in his time. He set a standard for scientific and engineering plausibility, and helped to raise the genre's standards of literary quality. He was one of the first science fiction writers to break into mainstream magazines such as The Saturday Evening Post in the late 1940s. He was one of the best-selling science fiction novelists for many decades, and he, Isaac Asimov, and Arthur C. Clarke are often considered to be the "Big Three" of science fiction authors.A notable writer of science fiction short stories, Heinlein was one of a group of writers who came to prominence under the editorship of John W. Campbell, Jr. in his Astounding Science Fiction magazine—though Heinlein denied that Campbell influenced his writing to any great degree.Within the framework of his science fiction stories, Heinlein repeatedly addressed certain social themes: the importance of individual liberty and self-reliance, the obligation individuals owe to their societies, the influence of organized religion on culture and government, and the tendency of society to repress nonconformist thought. He also speculated on the influence of space travel on human cultural practices.Heinlein was named the first Science Fiction Writers Grand Master in 1974. He won Hugo Awards for four of his novels; in addition, fifty years after publication, three of his works were awarded "Retro Hugos"—awards given retrospectively for works that were published before the Hugo Awards came into existence. In his fiction, Heinlein coined words that have become part of the English language, including "grok" and "waldo", and popularized the terms "TANSTAAFL" and space marine. He also described a modern version of a waterbed in his novel The Door Into Summer, though he never patented or built one. Several of Heinlein's works have been adapted for film and television.
