Aphorisms [Death mediates on the high and the low...]

Lapis Press [Santa Monica, California: Lapis Press. no date - circa 1984]. First edition. Octavo. 64pp. Perfectbound plain white wrappers. Near fine with some light toning and a bump. A collection of poems/thoughts by abstract painter Sam Francis, founder of Lapis Press. While the trade version of Aphorisms was published in an edition of 600 copies, we have only been able to locate one other copy of this larger format, issued without a dustwrapper, in the archives of the Sam Francis Foundation. The foundation could not definitively date this variant; its sparse production suggest it is possibly a proof copy. Rare. OCLC locates no copies of this variant (five of the trade edition). .

        Son of the Morning Star

San Francisco: North Point Press. 1984. Bound galley sheets of Connell's bestselling and controversial reconstruction of Custer's personality and his actions prior to and during his final battle. 6-1/4" x 13-3/4", printed on rectos only, bound in plain cream wrappers. Signed by the author. Heavily edited in at least three hands, with readers' comments and questions in two different colors and copy-editor's marks in red pencil; near fine. The readers' comments often seek to clarify the writing but at times challenge it, pointing out instances in which the author has taken liberties or made judgments that are not supported by his text. In other cases, phrases are replaced or rewritten in the margins. In all, hundreds of queries, corrections and changes throughout the book. This title is notable on several counts: it was a breakthrough book for both its author and publisher -- the first time either had reached the bestseller lists. And it provoked an outcry from historians and Custer scholars, who took issue with a number of Connell's interpretations but also seem to have resented the incursion onto their "turf" by a literary type with no previous experience in the field. By most accounts, Connell's research was quite thorough, and his interpretations were within the range of historical debate on ambiguous points. The editors' notes and challenges seem to be aimed at making the book more solid and unassailable, as though they anticipated the outcry it might incite. In most cases, it seems, the author's interpretations have since become the accepted versions of events. A rare look at a major book as a work-in-progress, a book that helped cement the author's reputation and also helped a young literary publishing company achieve a level of credibility and commercial success it had previously lacked. . First Edition. Softcover.

Buckaroo Banzai (Original screenplay for the 1984 film, prop master's copy)

Los Angeles: Twentieth Century-Fox, 1984. Shooting Script for the 1984 film (here titled simply, "Buckaroo Banzai"). Property Master Erik Nelson's copy, with his first name in red on the title page ("Erik's"), profusely annotated throughout with notes on numerous unusual props that were required for the film. Copy number (0000052) stamped in black ink on the title page and several other pages throughout. & & Despite mixed reviews and a disastrous initial release that dumped the film into theaters for a week in the midst of the 1984 Summer Olympics, "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eight Dimension" went on to become one of the major cult films of the 1980s, developing a rabid following after its release on videotape. Drifting between satire and improbable sci-fi adventure, the film stars Peter Weller as Buckaroo Banzai, the son of an American mother and Japanese father who is a combination physicist, neurosurgeon, martial arts master, secret agent, and rock star who travels with his band of assistants/backing musicians, The Hong Kong Cavaliers [IMDB]. & & No wrapper present (perhaps none was issued), title page present as called for, with a date of April 29, 1983, stated as "Shooting Script," with credits for screenwriter Earl Mac Rouch and production company "Beckerman/Canton-Richter. 113 pages, with 8 blue revision pages at the middle, an added scene where Buckaroo Banzai visits Penny Priddy (played by Ellen Barkin) while she is in jail. The first revision page is dated 7/26/1983, the rest are undated. Near Fine. A key copy of a screenplay for one of the wildest cult films of the 1980s.
