        Wide Open [prototype]

Arlington, Virginia:: An Osborn Book,, 1984.. Artist Proof [prototype]. 34.5" x 7.5" x 26"; 74 shaped leaves. Printed by offset lithography on archival Mohawk Superfine paper with lightfast inks at the Writer's Center Bethesda, Maryland. Bound between shaped covers of plexi with a wooden spine. Affixed to a pedestal, a wooden base 13.5 x 8 x 5.5". A screw mechanism allows the book to be tilted diagonally for reading and turning the pages (i.e. the wooden spine of the book swings down to rest on the pedestal so that the spine rests at an angle). Renee Riese Hubert & Judd D. Hubert, The Cutting Edge of Reading: Artists' Books: "Kevin Osborn disturbs the act of reading as much as possible.... Wide Open (1984) makes the very handling of the book almost impossible. The volume, large in size, requires the reader either to lock it up between two plexiglas covers reposing on a wooden pedestal doubling as spine or to leave it wide open, as the title indicates. Each of its alternately rectangular and triangular pages has its own dimensions and never coincides with another. Because of this manifest 'difference,' the reader cannot progress in an accustomed way: his or her field of vision constantly requires refocusing. Other devices jot us out of our habits: patterned lithographed papers with alternating designs seem somewhat reminiscent of wallpaper. The turning of the pages disrupts any routine that we might still rely on, and the thick double leaves, leaning on each other, insist on bending over. Open or closed, the book resembles a bird attempting to fly away. The sculptural volume constantly deprives us of the intimacy of reading. Normally, we find ourselves alone with books and physically close to them, but in Wide Open our approach, our seeking to turn the pages, our asking them to lie flat, only disturb the equilibrium of the flight. "Colored patterns into which large stripes and Arches intrude become the bed on which words eventually come to life. Scattered black seedlings play the role of forerunners of words which could appear in any text....They become more crowded and busy as the patterns intensify; they may eventually repeat, but they never link up spatially, semiotically, or syntactically. Since words do not stand out, the reader literally has to pin them down. The artist describes Wide Open as 'A book of passage through dense landscapes of overlay pattern and structure.' Instead of transfixing a text on the page, Osborn proposes a flight over a spatial expanse where we can spot at best a hidden word from afar.

[Photo Album]: Original Photographs of a Young African-American Boy who was a 1984 Olympic Torchbearer

(Los Angeles. 1984). Quarto. Pictorial boards illustrating Olympic scenes. Boards slightly soiled, about fine. The album contains 92 color snapshots (3" x 5") of a young African-American torchbearer and the community excitement surrounding his participation in the festivities leading up to the 23rd Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles in 1984. The album shows him carrying the torch, with various relatives brandishing the unlit torch, posing for photos, signing autographs, and cutting into a congratulatory cake for "Elliott" thanking the Morley Construction Company, who appears to have been his sponsor, and with many street scenes. The photos are housed in an official Olympic album. The 1984 torch relay was the first to invite nominations from the public, a system replicated in future years. It was also the first to charge torchbearers for their participation, with the fee working out to about $3,000 per kilometer. Anybody who could raise the entry fee would be able to sponsor one kilometer and bear a torch or designate a person to do so. The scheme, called the "Youth Legacy Kilometer" raised nearly $11 million, all of which was given to charities. The Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC), unhappy with what they considered to be the commercialization of the torch relay, threatened to stop the event from happening, but an agreement was negotiated just days before the planned ceremony. On the morning of May 8, the torch relay left on its 84-day journey from Olympia, Greece to Los Angeles, California. The relay passed through 33 states and Washington, DC, reaching 41 of the largest American cities and incorporated 3,636 runners. The location of the album photos is not definitely known by us, but it appears to be on the outskirts of Los Angeles. .

Aphorisms [Death mediates on the high and the low...]

[Santa Monica, California: Lapis Press. no date - circa 1984]. First edition. Octavo. 64pp. Perfectbound plain white wrappers. Near fine with some light toning and a bump. A collection of poems/thoughts by abstract painter Sam Francis, founder of Lapis Press. While the trade version of Aphorisms was published in an edition of 600 copies, we have only been able to locate one other copy of it in this larger format issued without a dustwrapper, in the archives of the Sam Francis Foundation. The foundation could not definitively date this variant; its sparse production suggest it is possibly a proof copy. Rare. OCLC locates no copies of this variant (five of the trade edition). .

        LOST ONES.|THE

Stamford: The New Overbrook Press, 1984. loose signatures, cloth clamshell box. Klabunde, Charles S.. folio. loose signatures, cloth clamshell box. 35, (3) pages in addition to 7 full page etchings. Printed in an edition limited to 250 copies signed by Samuel Beckett. Beckett requested that The New Overbrook Press edition include certain alterations to The Lost Ones which make it the definitive version of his work. The author translated the text from the original French version, Le Depeupleur. Illustrated with seven etchings hand-numbered and signed by the artist, Charles Klabunde. Charles Klabunde, master engraver, was born in Nebraska where he spent the first two formative decades of his life. He obtained his MFA at the University of Iowa where his unusual talents were discovered by master print-maker Mauricio Lazansky who invited Klabunde to join his Print Workshop. Following his one-man exhibition at The Minneapolis Institute of Art, the artist moved to New York where he established his own printmaking studio and taught at Cooper Union. His work was prominently featured in the 1969 Associated American Artists' "New Talent in Printmaking" Exhibition and in 1970 in "five New York Printmakers" at the Whitney Museum of American Art. In 1971, he received the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship. His works are represented in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, The Victoria and Albert Museum, The National Gallery, The Art Institute of Chicago, the Bibliothèque Nationale etc. Klabunde's imagery and iconography, although highly individualistic, is often traced from the work of Bosch, Durer, Breughel, Callot, Rembrandt, Blake, Goya, Meryon, Redon, Klinger, Ensor, Magritte, Klee and Picasso. Samuel Beckett received the Nobel Prize in 1969 and great attention was focused on his next work, The Lost Ones, which was his most sustained narrative to have appeared for many years. "Inside a flattened cylinder fifty metres round and sixteen high" live Beckett's lost people. Their relentless search for an escape from the cylinder gives The Lost Ones a tragic force as a mirror of our own existence. The publisher, Charles Altschul, designed this limited edition as the inaugural offering of The New Overbrook Press.

        Fiorucci Stickers

Modena: Edizioni Panini S.p.A., 1984. Stickers are un-peeled and intact with original backings; near fine overall.. Two hundred sequentially numbered loose stickers. Produced by the iconic Italian fashion label, the 1984 stickers are a memorable high point in Fiorucci's graphic pop post modernism. The stickers are organized into six themes: Fiorucci Story, Dance, Electron, Romance, Pin-Up and Swim. "Fiorucci Story" is notable for the profusion of some 52 signature images the brand used instead of any single fixed logo. Electron, a series of often abstracted electronic devices and circuitry, features many images designed on the brand new Apple Macintosh by an uncredited Christoph Radl, designer and typographer with the Memphis Group of architects and designers. All of the themes work within the decidedly postmodern graphic idiom of 1950s American kitsch filtered through an ironic, post punk, new wave and science fiction aesthetic familiar from underground comix such as Raw Magazine.
