        Teleny

San Francisco: Gay Sunshine Press,, 1984. Edited by Winston Leyland. Octavo. Original yellow cloth, titles to spine and front in dark blue. No jacket as issued. Portrait frontispiece. Some minor marks to rear board but an excellent copy. First unexpurgated edition, first printing, very scarce cloth issue, publisher and editor Winston Leyland's own copy with his ownership inscription to the front endpaper and additionally signed by him on the title page. 200 copies of this unnumbered cloth issue were produced, and the vast majority were sold to libraries. "This brilliant erotic novel, attributed to Oscar Wilde and his circle, was first published in an underground edition of 200 copies in 1893. It deals with the love between two men in Victorian England–one of them the handsome, 24-year-old pianist Rene Teleny; the other a young man-about-town, Camille Des Grieux. The book was originally published anonymously because no one in England (least of all Oscar Wilde) could afford to acknowledge open authorship of a book in which homosexual acts are described minutely and celebrated with abandon. And Teleny certainly leaves nothing to the imagination. It is a veritable catalogue of gay lovemaking, and may indeed be rightly considered the first gay novel in the English language. This is the first unexpurgated edition of the novel, based on the original manuscript" (Gay Sunshine bibliography). Winston Leyland (b.1940) was a leading figure in American LGBT publishing and won the Stonewall Book Award in 1980. He established the Gay Sunshine Press in 1975, which was notable for its pioneering anthologies of gay writing from other cultures, and his Gay Sunshine Journal (1970-82) was particularly influential for its interviews with prominent gay writers of the era.

Typescript Signed ("John Cage"), entitled "Writings [sic] through Howl. For A.G. on his Sixtieth Birthday," being a fair copy prepared for publication

"through Asia and home to New York", 1984. Title plus 24 pp. 4to. Fine. Title plus 24 pp. 4to. Typescript of Cage tribute to Allen Ginsberg. A confluence of two giants of the post-war avant-garde, the composer John Cage (1912-1992) and Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997), whose paean to and lament for Beat culture, "Howl," remains a cornerstone of counterculture literature and serves as source text for the present manuscript. Imposing a set of rules on "Howl" as a way of producing a new text via chance operations, Cage creates one of his most successful "mesostics," a variation on the acrostic and a form of Cage's own invention. (In this example, the letter string "ALLEN GINSBERG" runs continually down the center of each of the poem's nine cycles.) The present manuscript is a fair copy prepared for publication and sent to Bill Morgan and Bob Rosenthal, editors of Best Minds (Lospecchio Press, 1986), a tribute to Allen Ginsberg published in honor of his 60th birthday. It is accompanied by an Autograph Note Signed by Cage to Morgan and Rosenthal, accepting the invitation to write the piece, and querying them about the deadline. The piece was later reprinted in The Poem that Changed America: 'Howl' Fifty Years Later (2006). Cage manuscripts are rare on the market, and given its critical afterlife and the connection to Ginsberg and "Howl," this is easily the most significant example we have encountered to date. In her essay "John Cage Conceptual Poet," the critic Marjorie Perloff writes of this poem: "Cage's elliptical lyric functions as both homage and critique ... As hushed and muted as Ginsberg's baroque 'ashcan rantings' are wild and expansive, Cage's is a rhyming nightsong, whose referents are elusive ... Without deploying a single word of his own, Cage subtly turns the language of Howl against itself so as to make a plea for restraint and quietude as alternatives to the violence and indignation at the heart of Ginsberg's poem." The immense influence of Cage on 20th century music continues to be felt, and his literary reputation is by no means obscure. Wesleyan published a number of lifetime collections, including Silence (1961), A Year from Monday (1967), M (1973), Empty Words (1979) and X (1983). Cage also held the Charles Eliot Norton Chair in Poetry at Harvard, 1988-89, and an active generation of Conceptual writers considers his work to be foundational. [With:]: Autograph Note Signed, on Cage's personal stationery, 1 p., December 27, 1983, with envelope, to Bill Morgan and Bob Rosenthal, "I will be glad to write something for the festschrift for Allen Ginsberg. When is the deadline?"

Vintage Silver Gelatin Photograph of Jean-Michel Basquiat

New York: np, 1984. First edition. Fine. LARGE, LIMITED VINTAGE SILVER GELATIN PHOTOGRAPH OF BASQUIAT FROM 1984. ONE OF ONLY TWO VINTAGE PRINTS PRODUCED OF AN ICONIC BASQUIAT PORTRAIT. Trained under Richard Avedon, the photographer Richard Corman has been one of the most celebrated portrait photographers of the last thirty years. Rolling Stone refers to his photographs as "iconic" and documentarian Ken Burns says Corman's versatile body of work is an "artistic vision dedicated to the highest aspirations of human endeavor... the photographs record in big moments and small, among the famous and ordinary, the gifted and challenged, larger truths relevant to all of us." Corman's 1984 photo session with the 23-year old Jean-Michel Basquiat at Basquiat's Great Jones St. studio produced wonderfully evocative images of the now legendary artist. As Corman explains: "In 1984, I was asked to photograph Jean Michel Basquiat for L'Uomo Vogue. When I walked into the artist's loft I was immediately engulfed by a wave of creative confusion. The room was a swirl of people, paint, canvas, color, and smoke. Off in the corner was Basquiat, submerged and almost invisible. "I tried to be as prepared as possible for my shoot, but until I had walked into his studio, I was really entering the unknown. His space was packed with people - Jean-Michel attracted people for all kinds of reasons. He was charismatic, beautiful, a bit haunting and a genius in his own right. There was just a wonderfully crazy energy of smoke and people and music and painting. It was messy and cool in the best way. I decided to kind of isolate him in the photos from the chaos. For me, that's what makes these pictures so interesting - the focus is on him, instead of the mad energy surrounding him. "All I had with me was a twin lens Rolleiflex camera, one strobe, and a 4-foot-wide grey seamless paper. I hung it up, had him stand in front of it, and began taking pictures. I would say he was comfortable, uncomfortable, angry, curious, and intense. He just created his own space and energy, and I followed it... His hands, eyes, and body language were so expressive, and he revealed so much through his luminous presence. "For me, as a young photographer, and even 30 years later, I'm always looking to find someone's story behind their eyes, and in his own way, Jean-Michel shared that with me. It was kind of magical, even though I didn't know what I had at the time. I didn't know who I was photographing, other than someone with a unique soul and spirit. I felt how multi-layered he was. His presence was quiet yet mesmerizing." The vintage photographs from this photoshoot are exceedingly scarce. Corman printed "a few" of his favorites for his portfolio at the time, including two of this image. Signed, dated, and numbered ("2/2") by Corman on the verso. New York: 1984. Size: Image = 16x16 inches; framed 23x25 inches. In stunning archival, hand-painted frame with museum plexi-glass. Fine condition.
