Medieval and Renaissance Texts and Studies, Binghamton New York 1983 - 449 Pages. Red cloth with gold spine lettering and decoration. Beautiful as new gift quality condition. No defects noted. Also it tells of the other deeds of chivalry done in the time of King Artu and the brave knights of the Tavola Nuova, especially by Sir Tristano, Sir Lancilotto, Sir Galasso, and Sir Palamidesso, and generally by all the other knights errant of the Tavola, and by foreign knights and those from far countries who at that time were proving themselves in deeds of arms. And also we will show the destruction of the Tavola, which came about through the undertaking of the high quest of the Sangradale.         Ram. Original bronze relief sculpture of a ram in profile, approximately 10 ¼ x 13 ½ inches, signed Baskin and dated 1983

      - A beautiful bronze, in fine condition. A beautiful bronze, in fine condition One of the richest and most ancient of symbols, the ram - symbol of Aries in the Zodiac - represented power and authority, as well as fertility, creativity and rebirth. The ram that Abraham found trapped in a thicket on Mount Moriah and that he sacrificed in place of his son Isaac later came to symbolize Jesus Christ, and remains perhaps the most famous ram in literature; and the ram's horn, the shofar, was an important part of Jewish history and ritual. Leonard Baskin was preoccupied with the Old Testament story of Abraham and his son Isaac during the mid-1970s and created three major sculptural works based on the story, including "Isaacangel", "Abraham" and "Ram", which were associated with a group of "divinator and prophet figures" that Baskin created at the time. - Irma B. Jaffe, The Sculpture of Leonard Baskin (NY.: Viking Press, 1980), p. 192.

1983. First Edition . Signed. MAPPLETHORPE, Robert. Lady Lisa Lyon. New York: Viking, (1983). Quarto, original black cloth, original dust jacket. $3200.First edition, cloth issue, of MapplethorpeÂ’s “whirlwind tour of one ladyÂ’s anatomy, and other eccentricities” (Foreword),with over 100 photogravure plates, signed by both Mapplethorpe and bodybuilder Lisa Lyon on the half title.""Robert Mapplethorpe first gained widespread notice in the late 1970s for his elegantly composed, beautifully printed black-and-white photographs of the male figureÂ… But he photographed the female nude with equal stylishness. Throughout his career he made portraits and still lifes of an almost sublime simplicity and intensity"" (New York Times). Mapplethorpe's Lady Lisa Lyon is a groundbreaking collaboration between the photographer and pioneer bodybuilder Lisa Lyon: a work in which Mapplethorpe, like Diane Arbus and others, suggested ""the American Dream was enacted in different waysÂ… [by] groups of people with wildly diverse lifestyles and beliefs"" (Roth, 22). Text by Bruce Chatwin; Foreword by Mapplethorpe's longtime partner and influential photography collector, Samuel Wagstaff. Cloth issue, published the same year as the issue in wrappers, no priority established; this hardcover issue is scarcer. Open Book, 328.         Kruydt - Boeck Matthias De L'obel ( Lobelius ) Matthias De Lobel.

        Icebreaker.

London: Jonathan Cape, 1983. First edition of the third novel by John Gardner featuring Ian Fleming's secret agent, James Bond. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by John Gardner on the title page. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Uncommon signed. Mel Watkins writing in The New York Times Book Review praised Gardner for adding "a touch of the plot subtlety of less insistently action-oriented thrillers." He also applauded Gardner's updating of Bond. "Although Mr. Gardner's Bond is less raffishly macho and arrogant than previously depicted," observed Watkins, "the spirit of the 007 series remains intact, and few Fleming admirers are likely to object. There is, in fact, something appealing about a James Bond who can react to women with some sympathy and confusion at a crucial moment."

Gilles Peress: Telex Iran, In the Name of Revolution

Millerton, NY: Aperture, 1983. Paperback. SIGNED. First American edition, first printing. Very Good paperback with light rubbing to the edges and extremities, a light bump to the heel, and a moderate bump to the upper fore corner; in a custom acetate wrap and a custom slipcase. BOOKS SHIP THE NEXT BUSINESS DAY, WRAPPED IN PADDING, IN A BOX. By the end of 1979, Iran was in upheaval: the revolution had ended, Khomeini was declared Supreme Leader, and the Islamic Republic of Iran was born. In November, students seized the American Embassy and with it, 52 American diplomats and citizens, and held them hostage for 444 days. On a whim and with the hope that he could better understand what was happening in Iran, photojournalist Gilles Peress flew to Teheran in December 1979 and for five weeks prowled the streets and countryside, recording his perceptions, encounters, and emotions. The images are juxtaposed with his telegrams to Magnum, his photo agency "and give an urgency not only to the photographs but to the life of one restless photojournalist living in a foreign land from day to day." The photographer's first book. Photographs by Gilles Peress; essay by Gholam-Hossein Sa'edi; uncredited introduction; background to events chronology. SIGNED BY PERESS on colophon page opposite the title page; no inscription. 104 pages; approx. 100 b&w illustrations; 10.75 x 15 inches.         Hiroshima

1983. Signed. HERSEY, John. Hiroshima. With a New Poem by Robert Penn Warren and Silk-Screens by Jacob Lawrence. New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1983. Quarto, original full black morocco, original black cloth slipcase. $2300.Limited edition of this “quietest and best” account of Hiroshima, number 868 of only 1500 copies signed by John Hersey, Robert Penn Warren, and Jacob Lawrence, and illustrated with eight color serigraphs by Lawrence.“The quietest and the best of all the stories that have been written about the most spectacular explosion in the time of man” (New York Times Book Review). “John Hersey once described himself as a novelist of contemporary historyÂ… In 1946 he visited Hiroshima, interviewed survivors of the first atomic bomb attack, and published the New Yorker article which changed him profoundly. In HiroshimaÂ… Hersey drew from the victims themselves the understanding of history that had eluded him as a war correspondent. The six Hiroshima residents told him how they had lived before the bomb struck, why they were not killed, and precisely how illness, exhaustion, and personal sorrow had qualified their survival” (Contemporary Novelists, 634). Stylistically, Jacob LawrenceÂ’s haunting illustrations, printed in 11 colors, owe an obvious debt to Cubism and Matisse: “the flat, sharp overlaps of form, the reliance on silhouette, and a high degree of abstraction in the color. But there is something more demotic behind those colors. They came, as Lawrence acknowledged, more from his experience in Harlem than from other art” (Robert Hughes). LEC 535.         Real Peace

1983. First Edition . Signed. NIXON, Richard. Real Peace: A Strategy for the West. New York: (1983). Octavo, original blue cloth, original dust jacket. $1850.Limited first edition, one of 1000 privately printed copies of Nixon’s fifth book, an exceptional presentation copy with a memorable association, inscribed by the President in blue ink on the half title to the nephew of General Douglas MacArthur, ""To Douglas MacArthur II, With warm regards from Richard Nixon, 6-10-'85."" Douglas MacArthur II’s distinguished diplomatic career, in which his tenure as ambassador to Japan earned him the cover on Time as “'the principal architect of present-day U.S. policy toward Japan,” culminated in his service as Nixon’s ambassador to Iran from 1969-72. In Real Peace President Nixon identifies the relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union as key to world peace, asserting the need for ""a policy of hard-headed détente… based on a strength of arms and strength of will."" This exceptional presentation/association copy is inscribed by Nixon to Douglas MacArthur II, the namesake and nephew of General Douglas MacArthur, who was Nixon's ambassador to Iran from 1969-72, culminating a distinguished diplomatic career in which he served as ""Ambassador to Japan from 1957 to 1961, a period when relations between Tokyo and Washington were put on a new footing of equality after 15 years of Japanese subordination… MacArthur went on to become Ambassador to Belgium, Assistant Secretary of State for congressional relations [and] Ambassador to Austria… While he was Ambassador to Japan, he played a crucial role in prolonged negotiations during which Japanese grievances were addressed. Eventually, a new United States-Japanese mutual security treaty was signed and ratified by both Governments and went into effect in 1960. In that year, Time magazine called him 'the principal architect of present-day U.S. policy toward Japan.'"" During WWII, MacArthur ""was assigned, during the Nazi occupation of France, to Marshall Henri Philippe Petain's puppet capital at Vichy in central France. When the Vichy Government broke off relations with the United States in 1942, he was turned over to the Nazis and was interned for 16 months"" (New York Times). As his death he was remembered as a leader ""who never forgot his heritage. 'If you were a MacArthur,' he once remarked, ""from the time you were in your cradle, the responsibilities of duty, honor, and country came with your mother's milk'… He lived and served his country through the most tumultuous and yet promising time of human history, from the rise of Nazi Germany through the post-Cold War era"" ((Bo Hi Pak, Chairman, Washington Times). This copy one of a privately printed limited edition of only 1000 copies ""for a select group of government officials and opinion leaders"" (publicity material); a trade edition was issued by Little, Brown the following year. With ""First Printing September 1983"" on copyright page. Book fine; lightest edge-wear, faint dampstaining to dust jacket. A very scarce about-fine inscribed presentation copy with an especially distinctive association.

Due to the fact that Thami Mnyele and 13 other cultural workers were murdered in Gabarone , Botswana by the SADF in the early hours of 14 June 1985 in a covert cross-border raid MEDU ceased to exist from this day forward. Their archives and workshops were destroyed and/or confiscated and brought back to South Africa as examples of communist inspired "art treason". As a result very few original posters survive today, in some cases one estimates less than 5 copies.       , herduk, 1983.
