1982. London: J.M. Dent, 1982. 4to. Original green cloth, lettering in gilt to spine and upper cover, with gilt device; dustwrapper; illustrated throughout with colour and b&w photos and photographic end papers; pp. 111, [i]; dustwrapper a little chipped, a few tears to upper edge and head of spine, up to 2cm long; creases to loose photographs, very good. First UK edition, sold with two original photographs by Rollie Mckenna of the original New York production of Under Milk Wood, with the photographer's ink stamp to the reverse of each. The two photographs, clearly taken very close together, feature the entire cast of the performance: Roy Poole, Nancy Wickwire, Dion Allen, Dylan Thomas himself, Sada Thompson and Allen F. Collins. One of the photographs is printed in the book at pp. 76-77, the other is unpublished. This was the world premiere of the play, held on 14th May 1953 at the Kaufmann Auditorium in New York, and Mckenna recounts in her book the excitement of the event. 1982. **** " CHRONICON CASAURIENSE " LIBER INSTRUMENTORUM SEU CHRONICORUM MONASTERII CASAURIENSIS SIVE DE CASA AUREA ....... [Click Below for Full Description]

Thomas Keneally
Thomas Keneally (1982) 'Schindler's Ark', UK first edition, first printing, published by Hodder & Stoughton. Signed and inscribed by author Thomas Keneally on the title page: "With warmest respect to the Collins family Tom Keneally 1994, sláinte & shalom". In addition, signed by four 'Schindler survivors' at the end of the prefatory author's note, by Kuba and Helen Beck (no. 611 and no. 18 respectively on Schindler's List). Helen Beck adds chillingly under her signature "I was there, I remember" [dated 5-4-1997]. Helen Beck was Hela Brzeska on the list. She was 15 when she was thrown into Amon Göth's concentration camp as a kitchen help. She described Göth as being 'incredibly bloodthirsty - he would walk the line with his dogs and order them to rip people apart. And after a few minutes torture, Göth would shoot them in front of everyone". Also signed by two more survivors. Condition: a near fine copy in like dust jacket. 'Schindler's Ark' won Keneally the 1982 Booker Prize. It was famously adapted into the 1993 film 'Schindler's List' directed by Stephen Spielberg, his most important film of his stellar career, earning him seven Academy Awards. First and Fine. 1982. Condition: Very Good. AUTHOR : PHILIP K. DICK TITLE : THE TRANSMIGRATION OF TIMOTHY ARCHER Publisher : Timescape / Simon and Schuster, 1982 These are the author's galleys of the first edition of this excellent novel by Philip K. Dick, which is the last one that he completed before his death in March 1982. The novel was published two months later, in May 1982. The unbound sheets measure 8.5" x 14" and have been folded in half. Twenty sheets are missing, perhaps because the author made corrections and then mailed them back to the publisher. Included are the letter from the publisher to the author and the original mailing envelope. Accompanying these galleys is the carbon copy of a two-page typed letter from Dick to Russell Galen, his agent at the Scott Meredith Literary Agency. This letter does not appear in The Selected Letters of Philip K. Dick. Because this is the copy that Dick retained for his files, the letter is not signed. In the letter, Dick lists multiple corrections to be made to his manuscript. I have not attempted to confirm whether the corrections enumerated by Dick in his letter correspond to the missing galley sheets because I did not want to handle the galleys to the degree necessary. It may be that the corrections refer to the page numbers of the manuscript rather than of these galleys. Also included is the sender's copy of the Express Mail shipping label used to send the selected pages for the corrections to Galen, which Dick retained together with his copy of the cover letter. The shipping label has been printed in Dick's hand. If you have any questi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ophthalmology, medical specialty dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and disorders of the eye. The first ophthalmologists were oculists. These paramedical specialists practiced on an itinerant basis during the Middle Ages. Georg Bartisch, a German physician who wrote on eye diseases in the 16th century, is sometimes credited with founding the medical practice of ophthalmology. Many important eye operations were first developed by oculists, as, for example, the surgical correction of strabismus, first performed in 1738. The first descriptions of visual defects included those of glaucoma (1750), night blindness (1767), colour blindness (1794), and astigmatism (1801).(Source: Encyclopedia Britannica) In the Ebers Papyrus from ancient Egypt dating to 1550 BC, a section is devoted to eye diseases. The pre-Hippocratics largely based their anatomical conceptions of the eye on speculation, rather than empiricism. They recognized the sclera and transparent cornea running flushly as the outer coating of the eye, with an inner layer with pupil, and a fluid at the centre. It was believed, by Alcamaeon (5th century BC) and others, that this fluid was the medium of vision and flowed from the eye to the brain by a tube. Ar … [Click Below for Full Description]

Franklin Library, 1982. Limited Edition. Octavo, 100 volumes, complete. A complete set of this magnificent collection of the greatest works of literature as curated by the Franklin Library. Bound in full leather of various hues, with all edges gilt, silk ribbons, moire silk endpapers, and gilt design/tooling to the boards. In just about fine condition, emerging from the estate of a fastidious collector. Entirely free of markings, bookplates, etc. The silk ribbons are uniformly folded down through the middle page block, then re-folded under the page block (that is, as they were issued from the publisher), which is a tell-tale sign that these books were probably never opened. A few spines are very gently faded; perhaps half a shade at most, although most are as bright as when new. There is a scratch to the front outer joint of Hans Christian Andersen's "Fairy Tales," but otherwise there are no notable defects. There is some sagging to the page block of "War and Peace," which is ubiquitous on this massive volume. A few other large volumes have just a hint of sagging, although included with this set are about a dozen foam book supports meant to undergird the page blocks and protect against that sagging. These were in use when we removed the books from their shelves. Overall, the set is essentially in fine condition; when we encounter individual volumes in typical home libraries, there is often some fading to the silk endpapers, and sometimes some moisture damage/waviness or a hint of foxing. We find no hint of these defects in this set. Also included are the "Notes from the Edi … [Click Below for Full Description]

1982. SIGNED BY BRAKHAGE Imagine an eye unruled by man-made laws of perspective, an eye unprejudiced by compositional logic, an eye which does not respond to the name of everything but which must know each object encountered in life through an adventure of perception. How many colors are there in a field of grass to the crawling baby unaware of 'Green'? How many rainbows can light create for the untutored eye? How aware of variations in heat waves can that eye be? Imagine a world alive with incomprehensible objects and shimmering with an endless variety of movement and innumerable gradations of color. Imagine a world before the 'beginning was the word.' Brakhage stands as one of Underground Cinema's giants. This is in great condition with a clean glassine cover as issued - signed limited edition from documentext- issued in 1982.
