SIGNED and dated (May 28, 1997) by Kurt Vonnegut on the front free endpaper. Additionally, Vonnegut has drawn a caricature self-portrait in profile on the page; his signature and date are within the full-page drawing. "American novelist, satirist, graphic artist. Elements of pathos, fantasy, didacticism and dark humor merge in Vonnegut's novels to provide an arresting mixture of entertainment and biting social critique. Among a select group of writers that includes Joseph Heller, Norman Mailer and E. L. Doctorow, Vonnegut has helped to extend the range of the American novel through his innovations in tone, style and form. The best of his novels have left an indelible print on our literary landscape, inspiring generations of imitators, but no equals. His landmark novel 'Slaughterhouse Five' was recently ranked at No. 18 on the Modern Library's list of the top 100 novels of the 20th century." - New York State Writers Institute. BASQUIAT, Jean Michel
Screenprint on Arches 88 paper, 1982, signed in pencil lower right recto and numbered in pencil verso from the edition of 18, published by Annina Nosei Gallery, New York, 75.5x56cm. Jean-Michel Basquiat's Anatomy is the artist's first portfolio of prints and it distills many of the thematic qualities that define the artist's early work. The series was created shortly after his inaugural solo exhibition, organized by the Annina Nosei Gallery in March of 1982. Nosei provided the artist with a studio in the basement of her gallery, where Anatomy was conceived. Anatomy encapsulates Basquiat's fascination with the human form and the written word. Beginning in early 1981, the artist produced hundreds of drawings and paintings depicting skulls and skeletons. Gianni Mercurio attributes the origins of his interest in anatomical forms to a particular incident, writing, "His childhood was rich source for many of the recurrent figures in his works, often drawn from texts such as Gray's Anatomy, which was a gift from his mother while he was in the hospital after being hit by a car at the age of seven" (Gianni Mercurio, "The Moon King," in Exh. Cat. Fondazione La Triennale de Milano, The Jean Michel Basquiat Show, p. 25). The portfolio conveys the artist's profound attention to the technical functioning of the body, illustrating skulls, femurs, elbows, scapula, and pelvises, all rendered in white lines, set against a black background, evocative of an x-ray. Each body part is labeled, as it would be in a medical textbook. The incorporation of these notations into the compositions also sig … [Click Below for Full Description]

1982. Condition: Like New. Original boxes are a little damaged, but books are brand new. 1997 The second edition of Comprehensive Heterocyclic Chemistry provides...an overview and will be an invaluable tool for all organic chemists until well into the next millennium. The information is well presented with adequate mechanistic discussion and good structural formulae. -- Chemistry & Industry 1997 With this large set Pergamon Press continues its efforts to present broad, scholarly overviews of major areas of chemical research. Comprehensive Heterocyclic Chemistry II (CHEC-II) is a "sequel" to 1984's Comprehensive Heterocyclic Chemistry...Together these two sets offer chemists an alternative means of accessing the formidable literature dealing with heterocyclic substances. An interesting feature of CHEC-II is its unique method of providing literature references...the reference (87TL2827) translates at Tetrahedron Letters, 1987, page 2827.... In a work that contains over 50 000 total references, this is a useful time-saving device.... Its logical organization and text-based approach make it easier for nonspecialists and advanced students to consult, and its indexes are thorough and very helpful. -- J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1998 The vital roles played by heterocycles has contributed to the importance of this area of chemistry. The set Comprehensive Heterocyclic Chemistry has now been updated only twelve years after the first edition. The 9 volume editors and the three editors-in-chief have done a very good job unifying the contributions of the authors....consulting Comprehensive Hetero … [Click Below for Full Description]

CATHERINE DIKE
1982. Condition: Bon état. Très bon état. Livre rare.

Hewitt, Benjamin A. , Patricia E. Kane and Gerald W.R. Ward
Yale University Art Gallery (1982), New Haven. First edition. Near fine in green cloth boards. This extraordinary study of the regional characteristics of a single furniture form is a gratifying example of scientific methodology harnessed to serve the arts. Published to accompany an exhibition of the same name at the Yale University Art Gallery, the book is largely based on Benjamin A. Hewitt's ten-year computer study of the form, ornament, and construction of nearly 400 federal period card tables from three broad geographic areas and nine urban centers in the Eastern United States. The study is given breadth and texture by Gerald Ward's essay on early American card-playing and by Patricia Kane's chapter on the role of design and price books in standardizing card table manufacture; but the heart of the presentation is Hewitt's comprehensive statistical analysis. A beautifully printed monograph and an essential illustrated reference. From the library of noted American antique dealer, Elizabeth Mankin. This is the very scarce hardcover issue of this definitive monograph. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Jose Saramago
Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1982. Advance reading copy by Nobel Prize winning author, his first novel to appear in US. Near Fine condition. SIGNED on the half title page by Jose Saramago. The New York Times Book Review has said that Baltasar and Blimunda "[m]uch reverberates in memory after reading this enchanting novel, but most of all the love story which soars over the rest of the action like a flute above a heavy orchestra. Mr. Saramago, a writer of sharp intelligence, keeps this love story under strict control, free of pathos or sentimentality. It is of, and on, the earth." Indeed, "Saramago has produced a novel that is deeply imbedded in the history of his land yet moves in mystical realms. It is a romance and an adventure, a rumination on royalty and religion in 18th century Portugal and a bitterly ironic comment on the uses of power" (Walter Goodman, The New York Times). Hardcover. With the dust jacket. With the slipcase. 464 pages. 2,568 photographs, 372 in color. Very good plus in a very good plus dust jacket in a very good slipcase. Bert Stern, the famous commercial and fashion photographer of the 60s, was the last to be granted a sitting by Marilyn Monroe six weeks before her tragic death. The three day session yielded nearly 2,600 pictures, fashion, portrait, and nude studies, of indescribable sensual and human vibrancy, of which no more than 20 were published. And yet these few photographs ineradicably shaped our image of Marilyn Monroe. The monumental body of work by the master photographer and the Hollywood actress marks a climax in the history of star photography, both in quantity and quality. It is a unique affirmation of the erotic dimension of photography and the eroticism of taking photos, and it is the world's finest and largest tribute to Marilyn Monroe. Minimal wear to the boards. Handled with great care. Internally, hinges sound. Binding tight. Clean and bright images. The dust jacket has minimal wear. Min … [Click Below for Full Description]
