Milongas. Prologo and Epilogo del Autor. Grabados Originales de Ana Maria Moncalvo

Buenos Aires: Ediciones Dos Amigos. 1983. First Edition thus, one of 30 Roman-numeralled copies only, all on Richard de Bas hand-made white paper, each signed in pen by the author, Jorge Luis Borges, and the designer / publisher, Samuel Cesar Palui. Page size: 9-3/4 x 6-1/4 inches; 58pp. Bound by Maria Sol Rebora: full fawn-colored goatskin with onlays of three shades of cream, plus tan and black morocco, each applied in vertical bands of irregular widths, with gilt fillets tooled horizontally at irregular widths, the title in gilt on a smooth spine, fawn colored morocco doublures with vertical gilt fillets at irregular widths on the front and rear flyleaves, signed in gold gilt on lower rear turn-in, Sol Rebora," top edge gilt, headbands of fawn colored and gold gilt thread, white Japan paper guards with gold gilt threads in the paper, original wrappers bound in, housed in quarter goatskin clamshell box of gray goatskin with title and author stamped in gold gilt on spine and edges, with gilt fillets running length of spine, and gray paper over boards, fine. Sol Rebora has designed and executed an especially elegant binding for this beautiful book from Ediciones Dos Amigos. The design is deceptively simple as she has used vertical and horizontal lines at irregular distances to form a strong architectural image. A further integral part of the design is her use of the grains of the morocco placed in contrast to one another to create visual depth on a flat surface. Maria Sol Rebora began her studies in fine bookbinding in 1996 in her native Argentina. She has since studied binding with Betsy Palmer and Deborah Evetts and design with Monique Lallier, Edwin Heim, Jean-Luc Honneger and Jan Sobota, as well as at the Centro del bel Libro, Ascona. Her work is currently featured in the 100th Anniversary Exhibition of the Guild of Book Workers, a juried exhibition. & Included in this collection of Jorge Luis Borges poems, known as "Milongas," is a previously unknown Milonga, titled "Unfaithful." Borges has also added a new Prologue and Afterward to this collection of poetry for. In the Afterwood, he thanks the artist, publisher, and printer for their work in bringing this book to life. & Under the direction of Samuel Cesar Palui, one of the "Dos Amigos," this edition was hand set and printed letterpress in Kluekens 12pt. in two colors, black for the text and red for the running heads, initial letters, and page numbers, by Ruben and Claudio Lapolla. The four aquatints by Ms. Moncalvo were pulled with the assistance of Mirta Ripoll; all are sepia and black. Combined with Ms. Rebora's classically beautiful binding, the reader / viewer sees a true livre de peintre in the French tradition with a decidedly "New World" emphasis and twist. Borges' poems, known as "Milongas," were frequently set to the music of the tango and have contributed greatly to the cultural life of Argentina. This copy is about as beautiful contemporary book as one could hope to find.
See an Image.
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Tom Sawyer's Comrade), A Facsimile of the Manuscript, 2 Vols. A Bruccoli Clark Book

Detroit: Gale Research Company. 1983. First edition thus. Hardcover. Fine. First edition, 1983. Two volumes, complete. Full leather with beautiful color inlay and onlay Zaehnsdorf bindings with gilt titles and gilt edges housed in cloth slipcase, clean unmarked text, Fine copies in Near Fine slipcase. Published by Gale as a Bruccoli-Clark title, this deluxe edition comes from Matthew Bruccoli's own collection, and we have been told by Rick Layman (Bruccoli's publishing partner) that Zaehnsdorf bound fewer than 50 sets this way to market to collectors, but that Gale trashed the majority of these, as they remained unsold. Matthew Joseph Bruccoli (1931-2008) was the foremost F. Scott Fitzgerald scholar and bibliographer of his time. Additionally, he wrote on, and edited critical editions of Hemingway, Hammett, Cozzens, Thomas Wolfe, John O'Hara, and Vladimir Nabokov. He studied bibliography under the tutelage of Fredson Bowers and worked with Jacob Blanck on the Bibliography of American Literature. He was responsible for the republication and rediscovery of dozens of forgotten American novels, and went on to be the editor and publisher of the 400+ volume Dictionary of Literary Biography, and was the chief editor of the University of Pittsburgh Press bibliography series.

        Weasels at Work

North Tawton: The Morrigu Press. VG+. 1983. Limited Edition. Softcover. Sewn in brick red wrappers with paper label bearing titles on upper wrapper, internally clean and bright, illustration of weasels (by Hughes?) to title page, number 69 of an edition of 75 signed by Hughes on the limitation page, printed at The Morrigu Press in 14pt Perpetua on Roma hand-made paper. , The Morrigu Press was founded in 1979, when Ted Hughes' sister, Olwyn, gave his son, Nicholas, her Albion hand press and a large fount of Monotype Centaur. Olwyn, who together with her brother had been publishing limited editions of his work under the Rainbow Press imprint, had bought the press in the early 1970s, planning to experiment with design ideas for books. However printing proved more complicated than expected and so she gave the press to her nephew. Nicholas had learned printing and bookbinding at school, had discovered a talent for it and so set about printing limited editions of his father's work. Ted Hughes was a talented illustrator, but The Morrigu Press publications are almost the only place where his illustrations were published. The exceptions being the Rainbow Press book, 'Earth Moon', and, as a single drawing of a bull, on or in Moortown Elegies and the trade edition of Moortown Diary. , 9.5" by 6.5" .

Small archive including HIPPOCRENE, MATOAKA, THE KINGFISHER, WHAT THE LIGHT WAS LIKE, ARCHAIC FIGURE, and THE SILENCE OPENS, some signed, others with notes laid in, typed poem DUNDEE

New York: Knopf and others, 1983 . First editions . Most fine or near fine condition, some with folds from mailing. . FOR SALE, AS A LOT ONLY: a unique group of items with a significant association to Clampitt's life. Included are four of her hardcover books published by Knopf - The Kingfisher, What the Light Was Like, Archaic Figure and The Silence Opens. Kingfisher is a 2nd printing (before publication), the rest are first printings; none have dust jackets (possibly as sent by the publisher or possibly removed by the recipient.) Tipped onto the front endpaper of 'The Kingfisher' is a small handwritten note "For Harold Guthrie - who opened the excitements of English poetry for me so many years ago, and whose friendship I treasure - with thanks and best wishes always." SIGNED by Clampitt in full and dated in December 1982. 'Archaic Figure' and 'What the Light Was Like' have tipped-in printed cards from the publisher stating "with the compliments of the author" (one of those cards has "Harold Guthrie "handwritten on it); 'The Silence Opens' has a similar card, loosely laid in. Also included is a brief typed signed note dated in December 1983, referring both to seeing Guthrie recently and to the limited edition broadside of "Hippocrene" which she was sending as a Christmas greeting. The note also states that she is enclosing a poem "that comes out of my brief visit to Scotland." The photocopied typed poem "Dundee: A Homage" fills one side of an 8 1/2 by 11 inch sheet (folded in four for mailing). Hippocrene is on a single sheet 17" by 11" folded to make 4 page broadside, printed in an edition of 220 copies on the occasion of the poet reading at Bennington College in November 17, 1983. It has an additional fold line across the middle (probably to fit in a smaller envelope for mailing) - As far as we have been able to determine, "Dundee" has not been published in book form, at least - The final item is a copy of "Matoaka: A Poem in Celebration of the Tercentary of the College of William and Mary College in Virginia" in 1993. This is INSCRIBED by Clampitt to Guthrie 'with longtime and continuing esteem' and dated in February, 1993. While Clampitt started writing poetry seriously in the 1970's, and had been published in magazines, including the New Yorker, as well as publishing the chapbook 'Multitudes, Multitudes,' it was the appearance of her first collection with Knopf - The Kingfisher - in 1983, when she was already in her 60's, that brought her acclaim. This lot covers the entire span of Clampitt's most productive last years before her death - and they are evidence on an on-going and warm relationship with the teacher from her hometown of New Providence, Iowa, the teacher whom she honored publicly in 1984 when she wrote (at the end of 'A Homage to John Keats'): "I wish to . . . pay tribute to Harold Guthrie, in whose class at New Providence, Iowa, I had my introduction to the poetry of Keats." The two very uncommon published items, as well as the short notes and the poem "Dundee", make this lot interesting in itself, but the real value lies in the spirit behind these gifts and notes to Guthrie - her teacher more than 40 years before.

Kommentarbd.: OHLdr., Faksimile tadellos. Kommentarbd.: Min Vergriffen. Nr. 816 von 930 arab. num. Exemplaren.
