Selected Papers 1945-1980 with Commentary. (INSCRIBED BY YANG TO FELLOW NOBEL LAUREATE IN PHYSICS DONALD GLASER.)

San Francisco: W. H. Freeman, 1983. - First Edition. xvi, 596 pp. Original cloth. Near Fine. Inscribed: 'To Don/with fond memories/of our past/associations [see below]./Frank/March/1988'. The Nobel Prize in Physics 1957 was awarded jointly to Chen Ning Yang and Tsung-Dao (T.D.) Lee 'for their penetrating investigation of the so-called parity laws which has led to important discoveries regarding the elementary particles'. The Nobel Prize in Physics 1960 was awarded to Donald A. Glaser 'for the invention of the bubble chamber'. Yang (1922-) and Glaser (1926-2013) are two of the 11 youngest Nobel Laureates in the sciences, winning at ages 35 and 34, respectively. 'The general intuition is that as you go to less and less biological and simpler and simpler systems, you begin to lose the ability to distinguish time going forward and time backward. And that's an endless debate having to do with evolution and cosmic and so on. But that's the simple explanation of it. So everybody assumed that if you're talking about these little submicroscopic particles, that they don't have any knowledge of time—And the other question is that there are right-handed and left-handed people, there are even right and left handed molecules. Dextrose, for example, is a right-handed sugar, and levulose is the same thing exactly, but it's a mirror image. And so it is with the amino acids. They're all left-handed in our biology, but they don't need to be. If you make them synthetically, you get what's called a racemic mixture—half are right-handed, half are left-handed. But if they come out of a biological process, they're all the same. So the notion was that as you get to simpler and simpler and less biological things, handedness also goes away. So you would think that, unlike a bowling ball, which has handedness because of the finger holes—I guess, maybe not, I'm not sure about that. But anyhow, as you get to billiard balls, then they're symmetrical, and the fantasy was that these little particles are billiard balls. They can't tell if they're getting older or not. They're not right-handed, they're not left-handed and Lee and Yang, a couple of really smart guys at Columbia, said, 'You know, it's all very well that we have that intuition, but nobody's proved it, and it may be that these guys can tell if they're right-handed or left-handed.' To make a long story short, they were right that these particles do know if they're left-handed or right-handed, and there are different kinds. . . . There was a general belief, your well-trodden path, that as you go to simpler and simpler and therefore smaller and smaller physical objects, they will have simpler and simpler personalities. And handedness is one that's gone. Then Lee and Yang said, 'Hey, it ain't necessarily so. We assume that because it sort of seems appealing, but there's no proof of it. Furthermore, it could be that it isn't true.' What do you know, these little particles, the so-called strange particles, have handedness. That's called parity violation, and that's a Nobel Prize. That was a tremendous shock. But they pointed out that here we were following everybody on the same path, and going out in the shrubs, we found an interesting thing. So there are these people who are mavericks. They're not trying to destroy anything' (Donald A. Glaser, Ph.D., The Bubble Chamber, Bioengineering, Business Consulting, and Neurobiology: An Interview Conducted by Eric Vettel in 2003-2004, Program in Bioscience and Biotechnology Studies, Regional Oral History Office, The Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley).         30 maschinenschriftliche Briefe m.U., teils mit hs. Ergänzungen u. Korrekturen von Exilanten an den Journalisten und späteren Antiquar Arnim Borski, nebst weiterführender Korrespondenz (23 Briefe) 1982-1987. kl.8° bis 4°. In 2 Pappkassetten. - Diverse Beigaben.

The Armageddon Rag #9 of 500 Signed Limited Editions in slipcase

New York: Poseidon Press and Nemo Press(1983). 1st edition/1st printing of the 500 limited editions - issued at the same time as the trade edition but both counted as 1sts since they have different ISBNs and are different sizes, bindings, numbers published, etc. This book is #9 of 500 of the signed limited 'collector's edition' with dustjacket, in publisher's red cloth-bound slipcase. The book is Fine - tight, clean, no soiling or wear and no markings other than the author's signature and number on the limitation page. The dustjacket is also Fine - price intact, clean, crisp, no fading, edgewear, tears or chips. The slipcase is Fine, with no wear or soiling. A beautiful production. If you've only read Mr. Martin's fantasy, you need to give his early sci-fi and/or horror a try - he's excellent at any combination of those two. Most of his earlier stories really can't be labeled strictly as one genre or the other - so I'll just say he's great at speculative fiction in all its varieties. If you prefer trade editions for his earlier works, look for some both signed and unsigned in our inventory. ; B&W Illustrations; 9-1/4" x 6-1/4"; 333 pages; Signed by Author, 10, 24, 20, F/F

        REAL PEACE

New York: ((1983)). First Edition, Privately published edition limited to 1000 copies, preceding the trade edition published by Little, Brown and usually seen signed by Nixon on the front endpaper. This edition was intended for a select group of government officials and opinion leaders in the United States and abroad. We have handled several copies of this title, one or two of which also included a brief letter from Nixon to a noted individual. This is one of the few copies we have seen that has been INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author rather than simply signed: "To Joe Fromm/with warm regards/from/Richard Nixon.", Hardcover, Fine in a Very Good dustwrapper with a small tear at the bottom front and a few rather faint scratches

The Complete EC Library: Crime Suspenstories (5 Volume Boxed Set)

Russ Cochran, 1983. Hard Cover. VF - Very Fine. Various. 5 Volume slipcased set. Published originally by William M. Gaines. Whilst not a horror Comic, two issues of Entertaining Comic's (EC) Crime SuspenStories were the subject of US Senate Committees investigations; the crow-bar murder Issue (#23) & its predecessor, the notorious severed head cover. As the investigating Senator Estes Kefauver said at the time “You have blood coming out of her mouth.” After publisher William M. Gaines's coy admission, Kefauver continued "There is blood on the axe. I think most adults are shocked by that." With Russ Cochran's Complete Crime SuspenStories you can enjoy all twenty-seven of these graphic masterpieces, illustrated by Johnny Craig, Jack Kamen, Jack Davis, Reed Crandall & several other top-flight illustrators from the EC stable. Issue #17 witnessed one of the finest adaptations of a Ray Bradbury short story, with Craig's darkly humorous rendition of Touch & Go! The Haunt Of Fear's decrepit Old Witch would inject some macabre horror in the mix, courtesy Graham “Ghastly Ingels (#3-16). There are several late stories by one of the masters of visual story telling, Berni Krigstein. Whilst Al Williamson's artistry was demonstrated in two stories, the second assisted by Frank Frazetta (Fired! #17). There are also the stark, yet oddly beautiful covers of Johnny Craig, which will linger and play on the mind. Each book is smyth sewn and deluxe bound to last a lifetime of re-reading. Very Fine condition with only minor shelf-wear to slipcase. Black & White illustrations. 10" x 13" (25cm x 33cm). Slipcase.
