The Nan Britton Papers: An Archive of Letters, Typescripts, and Documents (including personal copies of The President's Daughter)

(California) 1982 - An important archive of papers belonging to Nan Britton, author of the sensational tell-all bestseller of 1927: *The President's Daughter* (in which she named Warren Harding the father of her illegitimate daughter and described their nearly seven years long affair in great detail), and an early champion for the cause of securing legal rights for unwed mothers and their illegitimate children. The archive contains personal and professional correspondence, several unpublished and annotated working typescripts, and Britton's personal copies of *The President's Daughter* (including a first edition copy with a pagination error and missing pages, likely resulting from when the Society for the Suppression of Vice seized the printer's plates and printed sheets), and of her second book *Honesty or Politics*. The collection consists of about one linear foot of material housed by Britton into file folders and stationery boxes with her explanatory manuscript and typed notes. The collection documents Britton's life-long crusade for justice on behalf of children born out of wedlock, and to support her claim (only now confirmed by DNA testing in 2015), that Harding had fathered her daughter Elizabeth Ann shortly before his election as President in 1920. Included are special selected letters from Eleanor Roosevelt, Alfred Kinsey, Bertha Van Hoosen, Clarence Darrow, and several leading figures in child welfare legislation, along with 100 letters, mostly from women, who were inspired by *The President's Daughter* to tell of their own personal experience of having an illegitimate child and the ensuing social stigma they had to contend with. Also included is a separate folder of letters and ephemera from the radio celebrities The McDowell Sisters (known as "Sweethearts of the Air"), who befriended Britton and Elizabeth Ann after they read the book.Included among the unpublished typescripts are two complete variant versions of *Her Father's Daughter: The Life Story of Maria Malibran* (each totaling nearly 600 pages), Britton's biography of the celebrated opera singer Malibran, perhaps the most famous woman of the 19th century to have an illegitimate child. Also among the typescripts is the only known copy of *Stories* by Britton's daughter Elizabeth Ann (consisting of about 40 stories from 1928), several chapters from Britton's unpublished autobiography: *Stony Limits*, and two of Britton's unfinished historical surveys of bastardy: *A Thousand Years of Trial and Error: the politics that have perpetuated illegitimacy and The Prehistoric Mother: and the emergence of the "illegitimate" child*. Other shorter transcripts include: *The Illegitimate Child*, and *An Open Letter to Mr. Ashley Montagu* in which Britton disputes Montagu's radical theory (made in his 1969 book: Sex, Man & Society) that the birth control pill will provide the basis for the humanization of the male.A historically important and compelling archive of papers belonging to Nan Britton, who scandalized the country with her account of carnal adventures in the White House, and which *TIME* critic Robert Plunket has recently declared to be "a true American classic, the first modern political tell-all and a book of inestimable importance when it comes to our country's gender wars." A detailed list of the archive is available upon request.

        Abstract Composition (Original artwork)

N.p.: N.p., 1982. Black and orange markers, gray pencil, and coffee stain on drawing paper. Inscribed to Gary Lucas at the bottom edge: "to LUCAS from Don / NY Great House / VV / 82." 10.75 x 13.75 inches, spiral spine perforation along the top edge. Near Fine. Gary Lucas was the principal guitar player, along with Jeff Moris Tepper, in Captain Beefheart's final configuration of the Magic Band, appearing prominently on Beefheart's last two recordings, "Doc at the Radar Station" (1980) and "Ice Cream for Crow" (1982). Lucas' solo guitar performances of "Flavor Bud Living" and "Evening Bell" on the respective recordings are singular in Beefheart's ouevre. Lucas managed and performed with Beefheart for five years, until Van Vliet retired to Trinidad, California to be a full-time painter in the mid-1980s. During their association, well before he gained notoriety as a painter, Beefheart spontaneously created drawings for Lucas, typically using colored markers, and typically reflecting the situation where the drawing was being made, either literally or on some abstract level. Accompanied by an explanatory letter of provenance from Lucas.

TYPED LETTER SIGNED FROM ROALD DAHL TO HIS PUBLISHER RAYNER UNWIN. An Incredible Letter Introducing Quentin Blake, mentioning the BFG and the beginning of a new book featuring Charlie Bucket.

Unpublished. 19th October 1982.. A single page typed letter, written by Roald Dahl on Gipsy House, Great Missenden letterhead, to the head of George Allen and Unwin publishers Rayner Unwin. With fantastic content: Dahl writes that he has never been really happy with the illustrations in ?the Charlie books? and it would be ?a pretty exciting thing to see what Quentin Blake would do with them. Have a look, for example, at my new one ?The BFG? which came out last week where I think he has done a lovely job.? Dahl continues with regards to the flat fee for illustrating The BFG before noting, ?I have become good friends with him and he is a very nice fellow to work with.? In the next paragraph Dahl offers a mouth-watering hint: ?There is a beginning of ?Charlie in the White House? and one day I rather hope that I will get round to finishing it...? Signed ?Roald? in black ink. The letter is in very good condition, with three horizontal folds. An exceptional letter in respect of both content and association.       Unpublished. 27th January 1982.. A single page typed letter, written by Roald Dahl on Gipsy House, Great Missenden letterhead, to the head of George Allen and Unwin publishers Rayner Unwin. With interesting content. Dahl writes in thanks for ?the good news from the Inspector of Foreign Dividends? and for Raynor?s ?gentlemanly behaviour over this problem? comparing it to an exactly similar situation with Bob Bernstein of Random House [publisher] who refused to release the cash unless Dahl signed another four-book contract. ?I whistled off some short children?s books and now I have left Knopf and Random House for good. I have gone to Roger Straus? Signed ?Roald? in black ink. The letter is in very good condition, with three horizontal folds. An excellent letter both in respect of content and association.         Kiku Exhibition Catalog

Tokyo: Gendai Hanga Center. First Edition. Original cloth. Fine. FIRST EDITION, WITH STUNNING ORIGINAL SILKSCREEN PRINT BY WARHOL, of the catalog for Warhol's celebrated "Kiku" Tokyo exhibition. Capitalizing on Warhol's strong appeal to Japanese collectors, members of the Gendai Hanga Center in Tokyo asked Warhol in 1982 to create a body of work specifically for them, focusing in particular on images of flowers. Warhol agreed, and created a beautiful series of images inspired by the chrysanthemum (the traditional symbol representing the Japanese emperor and Imperial House). The exhibition was a success and Warhol's exquisite prints for the "Kiku" (the Japanese word for chrysanthemum) exhibition have since become highly regarded by both critics and collectors. One of 1500 copies printed. Tokyo: Gendai Hanga Center, 1984. Octavo, original silver-lettered silver cloth. Without rare original slipcase.         Monograph Series, Vol. 1-12 in Original Boxes with John H. (Jack) Howell's Identification in his hand of Over 675 drawings in the Period (1932-1959)

A.D.A. Edita, (1982), Tokyo, Tokyo - Quarto. 1984-1988. The definitve 12 volume set of Frank Lloyd Wright's complete works in original boxes with the expert notes of Jack Howe. Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer in his work John H. Howe, Architect: From Taliesin Apprentice to Master of Organic Design writes: "Just as Wright had risen to chief of design under Louis Sullivan, Jack became Wright's chief draftsman He was the person most responsible for producing the avalanche of drawings for Wright's architectural designs during that twenty-seven period", p. 6. As the chief interpreter of Wright's designs he became head of the Taliesin studio. He was considered Wright's right hand man who understood each design immediately and either drew them himself or delegated them to one of the young architects surrounding him. His ability "to rapidly produce drawings of extraordinary beauty" led to his becoming the lead architect for Taliesin Associated Architects following Wright's death (see p. 10). When John H. Howe designed Readleaf for William Krebes, his best friend, Krebes acquired the massive 12 volume set on Wright produced by A.D.A. Edita, he asked Jack to note throughout the set who were the draftsmen that he had delegated to carry out Wright's ideas. While at least 80% of the 675 designations are of Howe himself (designated under each drawing as J.H.H.), he also has identified the work of Blaine Drake, Gordon Lee, John Hill, Alan Davison, A.G.G., Curtis Besinger, Berta Hamilton, W.W. Peters, Ling Po, as well as the occasions when Wright himself would return and add foliage, trees, rock, color, (or as in one case where he modified or reworked entirely [as is the case of #28 in 1937]) and over 40 times these are noted). Contents as follows: v. 1 Monograph 1887-1901 - v. 2 Monograph 1902-1906 - V. 3 Monograph 1907-1913 - V. 4 1914-1923 - V. 5 Monograph 1924-1936 - V. 6 Monograph 1937-1941 - V. 7 Monograph 1942-1950 - V. 8 Monograph 1951-1959- V. 9 Preliminary studies 1889-1916 - V. 10 Preliminary studies 1917-1932 - V. 11 Preliminary studies 1933-1959 - V. 12 In his renderings 1887-1959. Each volume is pristine in original dust jacket and box. The designations by Jack Howe are neatly printed at the appropriate drawing as noted on the accompanying sheets.

[Photo Archive]: Asian/Pacific Lesbians and Gays

[Hollywood. circa 1982]. Archive of snapshot photographs documenting social events and activities organized by the Asian/Pacific Lesbians and Gays organization in the Los Angeles area, circa 1982. 51 glossy color photographs (31/2" x 5?"). Some very slight fading on a few images, else fine. Most appear to have been shot at an amateur variety show that featured live music, risque skits, performances in drag, dancing, etc. Another sequence shows traditional family picnic games like tug-of-war, volleyball, and egg rolling in a park setting. Most bear the ink stamp of Baron Studio of Hollywood, California on the verso."Asian/Pacific Lesbians and Gays (A/PLG) was created in 1980 to meet the needs of gay men and women of Asian and Pacific heritage and to provide a support system in their relations with their families and communities so as to understand and accept each other with caring and pride. The idea of forming an organization for gay Asians had been discussed before 1980, but an important impetus came from gay liberation pioneer Morris Kight, who then had an Asian partner. A/PLG strives to enhance identity, pride, personal growth, competence, empowerment, and leadership skills as well as inform its members of political and social issues. Other goals include building solidarity between Asian gay men and lesbians and between native Asian-Americans and those who had emigrated from other countries. The organization provides support groups, seminars, and social events for its members. In 1997, the name changed to its current form, Asian/Pacific Gays and Friends." Presumably these were taken for the group but these seem to be relatively amateurish candid snapshot images, and as such are very uncommon, and perhaps unique images. .

        BFG: Illustrations by Quentin Blake.

London: Jonathan Cape, 1982. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Boldly inscribed and dated on the front free endpaper by the author, "For Matthew with love Roald Dahl 18 March 1983." Some adhesive marks to the front and rear panels in a fine dust jacket. Illustrated by Quentin Blake. Roald Dahl is now considered one of the most beloved storytellers of the twentieth century. Dahl's ability to twist words into a clever and creative new language is fascinating to children, and is evident in BFG. The gruesome descriptions of the horrid giants and the subtle allusions to other stories will entertain children young and old.

1982 Autograph Letter about Money, Touring, and Tom Baker

1982. Used; Like New/Used; Like New. An interesting and rare autograph letter from the later years of the jazz legend's life to his friend Jim Butler. In the original envelope postmarked September 20, 1982, the letter details Baker's money woes while on tour in Canada and California, and apologizes for not being able to pay back Butler the money he had lent Baker. Baker mentions his girlfriend Ruth [Young], and an upcoming gig in Calgary organized by "some young guys who were very interested in my playing," and his upcoming tour in Germany, Austria, and Czechoslovakia. In a subtle mention of his ongoing drug problems, Baker writes, "I've been getting by since I last saw you on Tussion X cough syrup and feel as though I've made a lot of progress," and goes on to mention the death of actor Tom Baker from an overdose. (Complete text below.) A fascinating glimpse into Chet's later years, after his return to jazz, and his ongoing struggles with drugs and debt.4 pp. in pencil, on two sheets of notepaper with a piano key design. With the original envelope. Envelope slightly ripped from opening; overall in fine condition. 5 x 7 inches (12.6 x 17.7 cm). From the collection of Jim Butler, a long-time avid Chet Baker collector who became good friends with Baker and his family over the years.Text, in full: "Dear Jim, I have not come by or called since my return to N. Y., because as you can probably guess, the money situation did not work out as I had hoped it would. Linda Goldstein is the only agent that I have ever been associated with who accepted work where I had to pay my own travel expenses, which on this trip came to just over $700. Her percentage came to $750, all this added to $750, I paid back to George Arakion[?] came to $2,200, which does not include a seven day stay at the 4 Seasons hotel in Edmonton which came to nearly $500 Canadian including room service. After Seattle I had 3 days off before doing a one nighter in San Jose and another one nighter in Frisco. This came to $250 at the Hotel Sutter, which is not exactly a luxurious place to stay. I sent Ruth $1,250 to cover rent and sent her to the Virgin Islands for a week with a girlfriend for her birthday which was Sept. 3rd. So, as you can figure, it didn't leave me with a whole hell of a lot. Fortunately while working in Edmonton, I met some young guys who were very interested in my playing in Calgary and have since arranged for me to do a week there beginning Oct 4th through the 10th. I have to fly up on the 2nd because I'll need to rehearse a day or two with the young guys I have to work with, then on the 13th Oct. I'll have to leave for 2 weeks work in Germany, Austria and Chekoslovakia. This work is much better paid and I also have another 2 weeks in Dec. in Europe; so you will get the money back that I borrowed from you. I hope that having lent me that money has not caused you problems; you were so kind to let me have it. I've been getting by since I last saw you on Tussion X cough syrup and feel as though I've made a lot of progress. Give me a call sometime soon; if your not too upset about the money. I guess you heard about Tom Baker. I just heard yesterday that he died during my absence from an overdose. I known many people found Tom a little obnoxious and hard to take but I always got along well with him and found him to be a very kind and generous person. Enough for now Jim; I hope you are well and happy, and that we have a chance to visit before I must leave again. Love, Chet."''He was one of the first generation of masters who created the powerful American urban music that came to be called bebop. He was the last of them to remain faithful to heroin, long after the others had cleaned up or died young. It was a love affair more than a habit.'' (Chet Baker Obituary by Mike Zwerin, International Herald Tribune)A remarkable letter illustrating the hard life of the celebrated American jazz trumpeter, flugelhornist and vocalist. Baker was known for the clarity and ease of his tone as a trumpeter, and the preternatural calm, quiet, and reflectiveness of his singing, the way in which he could, "somehow," as the Italian pianist Enrico Pieranunzi puts it, "express the question mark of life in so few notes." Baker earned much attention and critical praise through the 1950s, particularly for albums featuring his vocals (Chet Baker Sings, It Could Happen to You) and Jazz historian David Gelly has described the promise of Baker's early career as "James Dean, Sinatra, and Bix, rolled into one." But Baker began using heroin in the 1950s, resulting in an addiction that lasted the remainder of his life, landing him in and out of jail and partly driving his notoriety and fame. His career enjoyed a resurgence in the late 1970s and '80s, during which time he lived in Europe, recording and touring, for most of the ten years prior to his death. On May 13, 1988 Baker was found dead on the street below his second-story room of Hotel Prins Hendrik in Amsterdam, in what was almost certainly a suicide, but ruled an accidental if drug-induced fall.
