John Brack nudes. Fifteen original lithographs

Text by Margaret Plant. Introduction by Gordon Thomson. Melbourne: Lyre Bird Press, 1982. Large folio (465 x 340mm), in a modern binding of full black kangaroo decorated with Brack motif, housed in a black buckram clamshell box with gilt decoration and lettering on front panel. Illustrated with fifteen original large lithographs by Brack, each drawn on a single zinc lithographic plate, each unsigned and untitled as issued. Thirteen lithographs measure 430 x 300mm (approximate), two of the plates are double page images of double nudes, and measure 440 x 640mm (approximate). Limited to 200 copies plus 50 hors d'commerce, but in reality only a quarter of this edition was produced. This example is unsigned and unnumbered. This stunning book, the brainchild of master private press publisher Tate Adams, is the only deluxe art book created by John Brack. Commenced in September 1981 and published in December 1982, the book was launched with a series of original conte drawings, on which the lithographs were based, at Realities Galleries, Melbourne. As such a high cost of production was involved in the binding of the book, only fifteen copies were originally bound for exhibition and sale at the show. Subsequent to this a further approximately thirty-five copies were bound, making a total finished edition of about fifty copies, far fewer than the anticipated 200. The fifty hors d'commerce series were issued unbound as lithographs for framing, and these were individually signed by the artist. This commercial aspect to the publication in part defeated John Brack's creative vision in designing the graphics - the images are composed with a specific perspective intended to be experienced as the book is angled flat before the viewer, which is lost once the images are framed. This particular copy is one of 5 copies bound in black kangaroo by Douglas Stewart Fine Books, bound from the original sheets circa 2008. Rare. Collections: National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, National Library of Australia, State Library of Victoria, State Library of Queensland, State Library of New South Wales, University of Melbourne, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Monash University.         THE WHITTINGTON PRESS A BIBLIOGRAPHY 1971-1981 With an Introduction and Notes By John Randle

Risbury, Herefordshire: The Whittington Press, July, 1982. NUMBERED LIMITED EDITION, one of only 95 copies bound in vellum and marbled boards and with 25 others, the only issue to include an extensive set of tipped-in specimen pages. Including the normal copies, there was a printing of only 320 copies in total. Handsomely printed on Zerkall Halbmatt mould-made papers, illustrated with engravings printed from woodblocks and halftones, the plates printed by Adrian Lack at Senecio, and this copy with the set of over 50 specimen pages, mostly from the original printings, and which were not included in the 200 buckram bound copies. 4to, in the original binding by Paul Collet and designed by Richard Kennedy of quarter vellum over marbled boards, the paper marbled at Whittington by Colen Gryspeerdt, the spine panel trimmed and lettered in gilt, in the original slipcase of brown paper-covered boards with woodcut vignette pastedown. 83, [1], specimen leaves pp. An especially fine and beautiful copy, essentially pristine and as mint. FIRST EDITION AND A VERY BEAUTIFUL AND SCARCE BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THIS MODERN FINE PRESS. The Whittington Press has, since 1971, been printing books by letterpress, from type ('as God intended', as the Revd. Bernard Roberts once remarked), in the Gloucestershire village of Whittington. It was started by John and Rosalind Randle partly as the result of an early enthusiasm for Caslon type, Albion presses and hand-made papers, and partly the wish to escape from London publishing jobs at the weekend. Its first book, Richard Kennedy's 'A Boy at the Hogarth Press' (1972), which took a year of weekends and holidays to print in an edition of 525 copies on an 1848 Columbian hand-press, proved to be that rare event in the private press world, a best seller, and encouraged the founders to make the Press a full-time activity in 1974. From 1972 to 1991 the Press? home was at Manor Farm, Andoversford, a mile away from the presses at Whittington. Since 1972 they have printed, and nearly always published, some 250 books, including the renowned annual review for printers and bibliophiles, Matrix (?by far the finest periodical of the book arts of the twentieth century, surpassing even the seven-volume Fleuron issued in the 1920s?), which is now in its thirty-fifth year. The Press has received numerous awards for its printing and publishing, including THE AMERICAN PRINTING HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION?S AWARD for Matrix, the first time APHA?S INSTITUTIONAL AWARD has gone to a private press. The Press has a varied list, which can be best described as belles lettres, and includes books with and about wood-engravings, bibliographies of other presses, type specimens, diaries, pochoir (stencil) illustration, and much else besides. The one factor they all have in common is illustration, nearly always printed from the original block, plate or stencil (?things, not pictures of things?, as Eric Gill once said).

The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with the Softcover Edition. There is no ISBN. The First Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Robert Rauschenberg: Oversize-volume format. White linen cloth boards with metallic-silver titles beautifully embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Robert Rauschenberg. Essay by Colta Ives. Matching white linen cloth slipcase. Printed on pristine-white, thick uncoated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Robert Rauschenberg's "Photos In + Out City Limits: New York". The great artist's collection of black-and-white photographs on New York City. It is the partial fulfillment of his 30-year-old wish to photograph the entire United States, a project he never completed. Showcases his unique approach to photography as a process of discovery, selection, and assemblage of objects from everyday life. One of the least well-known facts about Rauschenberg is that he began his career as a photographer. He makes no distinction between his photography and his painting, and he brings the same acute eye to both. The photographs, like the paintings, are formally rigorous, sensuous, and piercing. His celebrated method of appropriating found images and objects to capture the fabric, tempo, and "feel" of modern life is photographically-inspired and characterizes his large body of work. The idea of appropriation is not unique to Rauschenberg. It is a central tenet of Surrealism and continues to be the latter Movement's enduring legacy. What makes Rauschenberg's work unique is the way he has "set in motion an interplay of shapes in which the human form is integrated to a rigorous yet flamboyant sense of design, pictures in which art and real life coincide" (Pontus Hulten) . "A protean genius who showed America that all of life could be open to art. Rauschenberg didn't give a fig for consistency or curating his reputation; his taste was always facile, omnivorous, and hit-or-miss, yet he had a big-ness of soul and a richness of temperament that recalled Walt Whitman" (Robert Hughes) . "Mine is the need to be where it will always never be the same again. Photography is the most direct communication of non-violent contacts" (Robert Rauschenberg) . An absolute "must-have" title for Robert Rauschenberg collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in charcoal pencil by Robert Rauschenberg. It is signed directly on the page, not on a tipped-in page even though it comes from the publisher. The signature beautifully matches the facsimile of his signature on the book's cover and title page. This title is a great art photography book. This is one of very few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Many copies available online have major flaws because the color white soils very easily. According to dealers who knew him, Rauschenberg basically stopped signing books in the 1990's. Signed copies still available online are vintage, not recent, and very few. A rare signed copy thus. 70 tritone plates. One of the greatest artists of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy.         Traité de l'acupuncture, ou zin-king des Chinois et des Japonais; ouvrage destiné a faire connaître la valeur médicale de cette opération, et a donner les documens nécessaires pour la pratiquer.Paris, Crevot (back of half-title: De Lebel), 1825. 8vo. Modern paper boards, green title-label on spine.

      - Wellcome, p. 347; cf. Garrison & Morton 6374.14; Waller 1982. First edition of the French translation of Churchill's Treatise on Acupuncturation, the first English monograph on acupuncture, first published in 1821. The ancient practice of acupuncture gained devotees among French doctors beginning with Dujardin in 1774, after French missionaries had learned about it in China and Japan. Churchill's account aroused a wider interest in the practice, and the French translation by R. Charbonnier, was perhaps even more influential than the English original. With a contemporary owner's inscription on title-page. A minor restoration to the upper margin of the half-title and a small marginal water stain on the first 6 leaves. Overall a good copy of one of the earliest western accounts of acupuncture.

THE PLANT ... [with] THE PLANT ... PART TWO [with] THE PLANT ... PART THREE

Bangor, Maine: Philtrum Press, 1982-1985. First edition. A nearly fine to fine set. Volume one's rear panel is mostly stained with slight bleed to the last leaf, volume two has a slight nick to the edge of the right front cover. This is the real thing, not the seemingly common unsigned designer, printer and binder proofs, trial copies, and fragments in the marketplace these days -- and part three is the stopper. Now housed in a custom clamshell box. (20305). Octavo, three volumes, decorated green wrappers, sewn. Each part limited to 226 copies of which these are one of 200 numbered copies (numbers 124, 117 and 114 respectively) each signed by King. A presentation set, each booklet having a warm signed inscription by King to Michelle [i.e. Michele] Slung with the second volume inscription quite lengthy. And the last two volumes King also signs off with "Tabby says hello." Michele Slung is an author, editor and literary critic and friend of King's who published Stephen King's story "The Revelations of 'Becka Paulson" in her anthology I SHUDDER AT YOUR TOUCH.
