Der Codex Guta-Sintram ist eine der kostbarsten Handschriften des Elsaß, die wegen ihres Alters, ihres außergewöhnlichen romanischen Buchschmucks und ihres hochinteressanten Inhalts zu den Kulturschätzen von europäischem Rang zählt. Auch die Tatsache, daß Schreiber, Illustrator sowie Entstehungszeit bekannt sind, trägt zur Sonderstellung dieser einzigartigen Handschrift bei. Ein ungewöhnliches Teamwork Der Codex Guta-Sintram ist das gemeinsame Werk der Augustiner-Chorfrau Guta von Schwarzenthann und des Augustiner-Chorherrn Sintram von Marbach in der Nähe von Schwarzenthann. Die schöne Schrift stammt aus der Hand der Guta, während Sintram den wundervollen Buchschmuck mit ganzseitigen Bildern und zahllosen großen und kleinen Initialen ausführte. Gemeinsam vollendeten die beiden 1154 das prächtige Werk und weihten es der Jungfrau Maria. Das Kloster Marbach im Oberelsaß wurde 1089 durch Manegold von Lauterbach gegründet, der dort die Augustiner-Chorherren ansässig machte. Dieses berühmte Kloster war danach Ausgangspunkt und Zentrum vieler bedeutender Neugründungen am Oberrhein, in Süddeutschland und in der Schweiz. Eine in ihrer Art einmalige Handschrift Der Codex Guta-Sintram ist ein Gebetbuch, das dem Gebrauch der Damen des Klosters Schwarzenthann diente. Aber damit ist er nicht ausreichend gewürdigt, denn er sprengt die engen Grenzen eines Gebetbuches: Er enthält auch Hinweise zum Lebenswandel und Lebensunterhalt der Chorfrauen; er diente als Rechtsbuch, denn er beinhaltet auch eine Abschrift päpstlicher Privilegien für den Konvent. Auch auf die Zeiteinteilung der Klosterinsassinnen wird eingegangen, denn es finden sich genaue Anweisungen zum Gebrauch des Kalenders und zur Berechnung des Osterdatums sowie ein umfangreicher Kalender mit dem Martyriologium. Dazu enthält das Buch ein auf die Monate aufgeteiltes, architektonisch gegliedertes Verzeichnis der in Marbach und Schwarzenthann verstorbenen Äbte, Pröpste, Mönche, Priorinnen und Nonnen. Weiter gehören zu diesem einmaligen Werk eine Sammlung von Predigten zum Tagesevangelium (ein Homiliar) und schließlich auch die Augustinerregel mit dem Kommentar des Hugo von St. Victor sowie die Consuetudines, eine Sammlung der im Kloster Marbach üblichen Gewohnheiten und Bräuche. Dazu kommt noch ein illustriertes Kalendarium. Romanische Tips für gesundes Leben Das wichtigste Element des Codex Guta-Sintram ist der aufwendig gestaltete Kalender, der über 70 Seiten der Handschrift reicht und die reichste Ausstattung erhalten hat. Die Seiten sind mit sich über die ganze Doppelseite hinziehenden Bildstreifen mit Initialen und Tierkreiszeichen und Dreiergruppen von Personen geschmückt. Auf Spruchbändern sind verschiedene medizinische, pharmakologische und gesundheitliche Ratschläge festgehalten, wie etwa Vorschriften für den Aderlaß oder Ratschläge für Essen und Baden. Empfohlen werden je nach Monat Arzneien pflanzlicher und tierischer Herkunft, heilkräftige Mischungen sowie Diätspeisen. Dieser mit Witz und Humor gestaltete diätetische Monatskalender gibt einen einmaligen Einblick in die klösterliche Pharmazie und Medizin des Mittelalters. Ein damit vergleichbares Beispiel gibt es weltweit nicht. Der Kommentarband Das große Ereignis der Faksimilierung dieses wichtigen Werkes war Anlaß zu einer umfassenden wissenschaftlichen Untersuchung der Handschrift, die auch vom Nationalen Forschungsinstitut in Paris unterstützt wurde. Clarke to his protege, one-time secretary, and longtime friend Ian Macauley; "For Ian, to cheer you up on your 50th birthday (lucky guy!) and to prove that I've not forgotten Atlanta in '52 -Affectionately, Arthur. 4 Ap '89." Clarke sent the book to Macauley from Sri Lanka, using the novel method of pasting wrapping paper over the slipcase and addressing it to Macauley, with predictable results -- the addressed paper is still attached and one end of the slipcase has been cut away, apparently when the package was opened. Macauley was the dedicatee of Clarke's first published hardcover novel, Islands in the Sky (1952), and was an award-winning New York Times journalist. He also edited Clarke's book of collected essays, Greetings, Carbon-Based Bipeds! (2000). A nice association copy of this novel. Apparently the reference to 1952 in the inscription refers to Clarke's 1952 visit to Macauley in Atlanta, where he wrote the last chapter of Childhood's End, reportedly after discussions with Macauley. Basis for the 1984 film, written and directed by Peter Hyams, and featuring Roy Scheider, John Lithgow, Helen Mirren, Bob Balaban, and Keir Dullea (reprising his role from Stanley Kubrick's classic 2001: A Space Odyssey). .

Sewn in grey Fabriano Del-Sarto wraps with paper label bearing titles on upper cover, internally clean and bright, number 14 of an edition of 75 copies printed at the Morrigu Press in Centaur on Fabriano Michaelangelo paper and signed by Hughes on the limitation page, with a colophon drawn by Leonard Baskin. , The Morrigu Press was founded in 1979, when Ted Hughes' sister, Olwyn, gave his son, Nicholas, her Albion hand press and a large fount of Monotype Centaur. Olwyn, who together with her brother had been publishing limited editions of his work under the Rainbow Press imprint, had bought the press in the early 1970s, planning to experiment with design ideas for books. However printing proved more complicated than expected and so she gave the press to her nephew. Nicholas had learned printing and bookbinding at school, had discovered a talent for it and so set about printing limited editions of his father's work. Ted Hughes was a talented illustrator, but The Morrigu Press publications are almost the only place where his illustrations were published. The exceptions being the Rainbow Press book, 'Earth Moon', and, as a single drawing of a bull, on or in Moortown Elegies and the trade edition of Moortown Diary. , 9.75" by 6.75", Unpaginated pp .

Printed on handmade paper especially made for this edition by Twinrocker Paper Mill. The typeface is Jan van Krimpen's Lutetia, cast by Joh. Enschedén in Haarlem. Initial letters opening the Latin verses were designed by Mark Livingston and hand-colored at the press. Contains the Latin text of the medieval hymns Dies irae, Stabat mater dolorosa, Stabat mater speciosa, Veni Sancte Spiritus, Veni Creator Spiritus, Vexilla Regis, and Te Deum (all from Analecta hymnica Medii Aevi, Leipzig, 1886-1922), together with 18 translations of those hymns. Linnea Gentry moved her Amaranth Press from San Francisco, where she had established the it in the mid-1970's. Aside from her commission work, she published one fine book during her New Mexico years: this one. It is a masterful example of fine bookmaking celebrating sacred verse. It was featured not only in an exhibition at the Palace of the Governors in Santa Fé but highlighted in Smith's 'Passions in Print'. This is a fine copy of a superb example of fine printing.

        [Screenplay]: Nothing Lasts Forever

      New York: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer / Broadway Pictures. 1982. Screenplay. Quarto. 70pp. Screwbound in black duplicating service wrappers with gilt lettering. Near fine with some light wear and rubbing to the wrappers. The screenplay for the unreleased cult film by Tom Schiller, an original Saturday Night Live writer responsible for many of its early taped segments, including "Java Junkie" and "Don't Look Back in Anger" (notable for an aged John Belushi as the last surviving SNL alumnus dancing on the graves of fellow cast members). This surreal film follows a young artist returning to New York, now run by the Port Authority, and his subsequent recruitment by an underground tramp community that secretly rules the world. The picture starred Zach Galligan as the artist with appearances by Dan Akroyd, Imogene Coca, Mort Sahl, Eddie Fisher, and Bill Murray in an early film role as a "menacingly-friendly" lunar bus host. According to Schiller, the film was made to get SNL producer Lorne Michaels out of an MGM development deal: "I think they thought it was low budget or something to get off the hook of their contract, but I had total freedom. No one was watching hardly and I got to make a personal film with a studio crew." The film was at first accepted for entry at Cannes but a poor test screening and the film's own quirky style, which interspersed black and white stock footage of New York with new color scenes of the underground, ultimately doomed the film's release. Aside from an appearance on late night TV in Europe, the film was not released theatrically or to home video. The film was rediscovered by audiences after Murray insisted it be included in a retrospective of his work, creating a demand for its release on DVD for which MGM has so far not responded. In 1968 The East Kingdom was founded in the SCA; it was started by Elfrida and Walter of Greenwalls (Marion Zimmer Bradley and her then husband Walter Breen). The Annotated History notes the following about the first Kingdom event (June 2, 1968 - AS III): "Held at the Cloisters, New York City, New York. A tourney was planned but it was rained out. Elfrida and Walter of Greenwalls were the seneschals and the autocrats..." This copy is signed on the title page, not on a plate or slip of paper pasted in.       1982. An original photograph of Borges by Layle Silbert, taken in the Trustees Room of the New York Public Library, September 30, 1982. Together with two sets of contact sheets with 56 images of Borges (many in conversation with others, and most or all presumably unpublished) from the same evening. Borges' visit to New York was sponsored by NYU's New York Institute for the Humanities, directed that year by Edmund White. Silbert is a prominent photographer of literary figures, as well as a writer herself. Four of her literary portraits are in the National Portrait Gallery. Approximately 7" x 10"; tiny corner crease to one margin; photographer's marks on six of the smaller images; else fine, with Silbert's stamps on verso. .

Clarke wrote the last chapter of Childhood's End while visiting Macauley in Atlanta in 1952, where he was reportedly greatly influenced by their discussions. Basis for the 1984 film, written and directed by Peter Hyams, and featuring Roy Scheider, John Lithgow, Helen Mirren, Bob Balaban, and Keir Dullea (reprising his role from Stanley Kubrick's classic 2001: A Space Odyssey).       Offered is a special copy of the first edition with an original, signed dated presentation drawing by Michael Graves, done in charcoal in line with shading over the full extent of the 220 x 280 mm endpaper sheet for an unnamed recipient, showing a private residence on a hilly site with 2 trees under a largely sunny sky, the front façade rendered with some detail, house situated below an unidentified ridge with trees, sky with centered cloud, shadows done for the house and its 2 adjacent trees, sheet with border, including a wittily turned bottom corner, as if this was 1 study in a portfolio for the residential project. The independently published 2nd volume in series documenting Graves' buildings and projects, originally sold for $50 (the first volume, published by Rizzoli in 1982, on his buildings and projects 1966-1981). CONDITION DETAIL: Presentation: pristine. Endpapers: some offset from original drawing to facing front endpaper pastedown: rear endpapers pristine. Pages: pristine except p. 258 with margin soiling. Boards: pristine. Binding: excellent. Jacket: G+: overall rubs: bright and clean: needle-size puncture at gutter, below top corner: slight top and bottom edge wear, but no tears or chips. One of 125 copies all on Somerset handmade paper, watermark: "Somerset" / "England"), the first 25 of which were signed by the artist and the translator. Page size: 9-7/8 x 7-5/8 inches; 9 triptych fascicles each with a poem in French and an English translation of the poem; inbetween is an image of Rimbaud, with titlepage and colophon fascicles. Bound: loose as issued in blue cloth clamshell box with title stamped in red on front cover. The illustrations by Peter Thompson were printed on Arches paper at Meriden Gravure, with the exception of the first which is a tipped-in photograph of a color painting, an interpretation of the young Rimbaud by Thompson. The text was printed in charcoal gray ink, catching the delicate drawings by Thompson, by Dan Keleher's Wild Carrot Letterpress, and designed by Vincent FitzGerald and Robert Reitzes.         AGAMEMNON, CHOEPHOROI, EUMENIDES

      Greenbrae The Allen Press Greenbrae The Allen Press, 1982-83. Two vols., tall 8vo. Volume I bound in full native dyed terra-cotta goatskin with black onlays, blind tooled, carrying, in black Greek characters, the name Agamemnon across the top of the front and back boards (and spine), and the name Æschylus across the bottom. Full black goatskin inner doublures, leather joints, red Japanese endpapers, silk headbands. Volume II in a similar design but with the colors reversed; across the top, in terra-cotta Greek characters, is the word Choephoroi, and across the bottom is the word Eumenides. The doublures are terra-cotta, the joints, endpapers and headbands as before. Each is housed in a quarter-morocco clam-shell case. Each volume is signed by the binder. Limited to 140 copies by the Allen Press, they were the only limited edition in English translation, and represent the 48th and 49th books of the press. The type is Menhart Unciala, printed in black and brown; the running heads are Solemnis and Libra types, Greek-letter calligraphy and decorations are from Greek sources. The all-rag paper is handmade and especially watermarked at the Richard de Bas mill in France. The books were printed on dampened sheets on an Albion press made in Scotland in 1882. Denise Lubett, Fellow of the Designer Bookbinders since 1971, is one of the 38 binders who was asked to contribute a chapter to A Bookbinders' Florilegium, a publication of the H.R.C., in which these artist-craftsmen talk about their approach to the art of binding books. We quote: "...great purity of style and design usually bring forth great beauty...if we no longer bind books so that they become too fragile to handle...if we can ascertain that this bound book can be handed down for a number of generations, then we will have achieved a better and more significant role as modern bookbinders." The volume we are offering epitomizes these ideas. The Oresteia is a trilogy of Greek tragedies written by Aeschylus. The first story concerns the king Agamemnon who returns from the Trojan War to face the wrath of his wife, Clytemnestra, for sacrificing their daughter. To make matters worse, Agamemnon is accompanied by his concubine, Cassandra. While bathing, Agamemnon is murdered by his wife, and Cassandra is killed too. In the second play, Choephoroi, Clytemnestra sends her surviving daughter, Electra, to Agamemnon&#146;s grave, where she happens to meet her brother, Orestes. The siblings talk and eventually discuss a plot to avenge the murder of their father. The plan works, and Orestes kills his mother and her new husband. Orestes becomes tormented by the &#147;Furies&#148; since matricide is particularly horrific. Eumenides, the final play in the trilogy, addresses whether the Furies torment of Orestes is justified. Events leading up to a trial by 12 Athenians involve, among others, Apollo and Hermes. At the trial, Orestes is represented by Apollo, and the Furies represent the other side. At the end of the trial, the jury is evenly split, and Orestes is relieved of the wrath of the Furies. THE ALLEN PRESS PRINTING BOUND BY DENISE LUBETT
