Typed Letter Signed and Book Review

1982. A typed letter signed by Butler to poet Tom Clark, regarding Clark's review. In 1981, Butler, who would later win the 1993 Pulitzer Prize for his collection A Good Scent from a Strange Mountain, published his first book, The Alleys of Eden. It was reviewed by Clark in the February 11, 1982 Los Angeles Times, with the headline "Vietnamization of a Deserter's Mind." On May 12, Butler wrote to Clark, saying, in part: "I have received twenty major reviews of the book but none of them was more sensitive or insightful than yours. The best literary criticism actually explains an author to himself. That's what your review did. I understand my own book better after reading your review and I want to thank you for that." The letter is signed "Bob Butler." Also included here is Clark's original, 3-page manuscript review, signed by Clark: "...Desertion, Butler seems to say, is an inevitable act, made necessary by the human state. Every small movement is an abandonment of the past, with death looming over everything as the greatest desertion of all..." Clark's review makes it clear that Butler's protagonist -- an Army intelligence officer who ends up deserting out of self-disgust over his involvement in the torture and death of a Viet Cong prisoner -- is an analogue for the larger society, which deserted both Vietnam and those who fought there, leaving both the Vietnamese and the veterans as "displaced persons," in both countries. Clark's review is penned on the back of copies from a book about Celine and folded in half; near fine. A photocopy of the published review is included. Butler's letter is folded for mailing; else fine in a near fine envelope. With a copy of Alleys of Eden [NY: Horizon (1981)], which is fine in a very near fine dust jacket with a short edge tear. An insightful review of one of the best novels to come out of the Vietnam war, and the author's appreciative response. . First Edition.

Faksimile - Codex Guta-Sintram. Bibliothèque du Grand Séminaire, Strasbourg, Ms. 37. (2 Bde.).

2° (36 x 27 cm), 326 S., 230 teilw. ganzseitige farb. Bilder; Kommentarbd.: 240 S., Geprägter Rindsledereinband (Kommentarbd. HLdr.), Minimal beschienen, sonst tadellos. Vergriffen! Nr. 334 von 980 Exemplaren. Eine Kostbarkeit romanischer Buchkunst. Juwel romanischer Buchmalerei.

Phantasia Press Huntington Woods, Michigan: Phantasia Press. 1982. First. First edition. Fine in very near fine dustwrapper in original slipcase (see below for slipcase condition). One of 650 numbered copies Signed by the author, this copy unnumbered. Additionally Inscribed by Arthur C. Clarke to his protege, one-time secretary, and longtime friend Ian Macauley; "For Ian, to cheer you up on your 50th birthday (lucky guy!) and to prove that I've not forgotten Atlanta in '52 -Affectionately, Arthur. 4 Ap '89." Clarke sent the book to Macauley from Sri Lanka, using the novel method of pasting wrapping paper over the slipcase and addressing it to Macauley, with predictable results -- the addressed paper is still attached and one end of the slipcase has been cut away, apparently when the package was opened. Macauley was the dedicatee of Clarke's first published hardcover novel, Islands in the Sky (1952), and was an award-winning New York Times journalist. He also edited Clarke's book of collected essays, Greetings, Carbon-Based Bipeds! (2000). A nice association copy of this novel. Apparently the reference to 1952 in the inscription refers to Clarke's 1952 visit to Macauley in Atlanta, where he wrote the last chapter of Childhood's End, reportedly after discussions with Macauley. Basis for the 1984 film, written and directed by Peter Hyams, and featuring Roy Scheider, John Lithgow, Helen Mirren, Bob Balaban, and Keir Dullea (reprising his role from Stanley Kubrick's classic 2001: A Space Odyssey). .

        Wolf-Watching

North Tawton: The Morrigu Press. NF. 1982. Limited Edition. Softcover. Sewn in grey Fabriano Del-Sarto wraps with paper label bearing titles on upper cover, internally clean and bright, number 14 of an edition of 75 copies printed at the Morrigu Press in Centaur on Fabriano Michaelangelo paper and signed by Hughes on the limitation page, with a colophon drawn by Leonard Baskin. , The Morrigu Press was founded in 1979, when Ted Hughes' sister, Olwyn, gave his son, Nicholas, her Albion hand press and a large fount of Monotype Centaur. Olwyn, who together with her brother had been publishing limited editions of his work under the Rainbow Press imprint, had bought the press in the early 1970s, planning to experiment with design ideas for books. However printing proved more complicated than expected and so she gave the press to her nephew. Nicholas had learned printing and bookbinding at school, had discovered a talent for it and so set about printing limited editions of his father's work. Ted Hughes was a talented illustrator, but The Morrigu Press publications are almost the only place where his illustrations were published. The exceptions being the Rainbow Press book, 'Earth Moon', and, as a single drawing of a bull, on or in Moortown Elegies and the trade edition of Moortown Diary. , 9.75" by 6.75", Unpaginated pp .
