The recipients were Fred Durant III, a leading US rocket scientist during the 1950s and 60s, and his wife. In addition to working for a number of private aeronautics firms, Durant served as the assistant director of aeronautics for the Air and Space Museum and was also a highly respected independent advisor to the US government on aerospace issues. In 1954 Durant "penned an article for Aviation Week magazine titled 'Space Flight Needs Only Money, Time'. As president of the IAF, he told delegates at its 1954 convention in Innsbruck, Austria, 'The feasibility of space flight is no longer a topic for academic debate but a matter of time, money, and a program.' That same year, he was recruited to participate in the first civilian-oriented effort to put a satellite into orbit. Led by Wernher von Braun, the team developed a concept called Project Orbiter, which later served as the foundation of the successful Explorer I mission launched on 31 January 1958" (IEEE Spectrum, 2007). Clarke was good friends with the Durants, staying with them on several occasions when his work took him to Washington D. C., and Durant became the first executive director of the Arthur C. Clarke foundation when it was formed in 1983. A superb association.

        16 Black Flag Flyers

California 1982 - Sixteen original flyers for the American punk rock band Black Flag, various sizes, in very good to near fine condition with some tape abrasions, slight creasing, and tiny chips from removed staples. Eleven of the flyers are confirmed as having artwork by Raymond Pettibon. Black Flag, widely regarded as one of the first hardcore punk bands, was formed in 1976 by its only continuous member, guitarist Greg Ginn. They were innovators of the West Coast punk sound and were influential in the counterculture of punk both in the U.S. and overseas. From 1981-1984 they were fronted by singer Henry Rollins, arguably their most notorious member. Raymond Pettibon, a highly collected American artist, is noted for his comic-like drawings, ink on paper, and his association with Black Flag and the mid-1970s to late 1980s punk scene. Pettibon, Ginn's younger brother, started as a bass player for the band. He suggested the band's name (changed from the original name, Panic, in late 1978) and also designed their logo of vertical bars, with which the band gained notoriety by spray painting it all around the Los Angeles area. Pettibon was also the unofficial artist for Ginn's record label, SST Records, which released influential recordings from other alternative bands such as the Minutemen, Husker Du, the Meat Puppets, Sonic Youth, and Dinosaur Jr. Details of the collection available upon request.         The Color Purple

New York: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1982. First edition. Octavo, original half cloth. Signed by the author in a contemporary hand. Fine in a fine price-clipped dust jacket. Her third novel, The Color Purple won Alice Walker the 1983 Pulitzer Price, making her the first African-American woman to win one. "While Walker's first two novels end in the promise of good, The Color Purple ends in happiness, reunion and celebration. Walker has said that she took her great-grandmother's life, which included rape and childbearing at age 11, and gave it a happy ending. Once again she had begun with one of her ancestors' stories, completing and transmuting it through her art" (African American Writers, 351). "Critics have both praised and attacked Walker's use of black folk English to capture [protagonist] Celie's perspective. Walker responded, 'Language is an intrinsic part of who we are and what has, for good or evil, happened to us. And, amazingly, it has sustained us more securely than the arms of angels'" (New York Public Library, Books of the Century, 135).

Facsimile attractively bound in the publisher's gold slubbed silk, both covers with brass corner plates featuring a stylized quatrefoil leaf, front cover with the same plate used, on the diagonal, as centerpiece, wide raised bands; FACSIMILE VOLUME HOUSED IN A STRIKING LEATHER BOX WITH cork lining and a top in which is set A CONVINCING 8 x 5" REPRODUCTION OF THE ECHTERNACH GOSPEL COVER, FEATURING THE 10TH CENTURY OTTONIAN IVORY CRUCIFIXION, AROUND WHICH IS A WIDE FRAME WITH JEWELS set in gold filigree between intricately decorated enamelled plaques; companion volume with vellum spine and rose boards depicting in 28 squares roaring lions of Medieval style. Text in 23 1/2 karat gold, more than 500 initials in colors, gold, and silver, full-page initial at the opening of each Gospel, four "carpet" openings adorned with the colors and patterns of Byzantine fabrics, and 60 miniatures illustrating Christ in Majesty with the Evangelists and the Prophets, parables told by Jesus, and scenes from the life of Christ. Prospectus with folder containing sample leaf laid in. The corners of the box showing a hint of wear, but the facsimile volume in virtually mint condition. The monks of Echternach, a community founded in Luxemburg in the late seventh century by the English missionary St. Willibrod, produced outstanding illuminated books, one of the grandest of which is this Golden Gospel, named for the golden lettering of the text. Our marvelous facsimile, which does not stint the use of gold leaf, effectively reproduces the delicate colors of the original, in which orchid pink and mint green predominate. The Gospel dates to the early 11th century (the ivory used on the cover of the original book is from a few decades earlier) and is executed in the style of illumination developed during the so-called Ottonian Renaissance of the 10th century, when the German Empire (in which Echternach was then included) was ruled by one Saxon Otto or another: Otto I (936-973), Otto II (973-983), or Otto III (983-1002). One interesting feature of these Gospel illustrations is that the influence of Byzantine Greek art is noticeable; this is due to the arrival in Germany in 972 of the 12-year-old Greek princess Theophano to marry the future Otto II. The Greek influence is particularly strong in the depictions of the evangelists, seated at their desks, surrounded with a classicizing architectural frame, and surmounted by their winged symbols. The four creatures reappear, along with four prophets at their desks, in the eight tondos surrounding the Christ in Majesty, also Greek in style. Whereas these scenes are formal and hieratic, the narrative scenes are done in a lively, vernacular style, and clearly more than one artist worked on this masterpiece. Christ is shown with long black hair, his large hands often raised in a gesture of healing and teaching, followed by disciples wearing a rainbow of garments. Our very substantial and heavy facsimile--the box and two volumes together weigh almost 40 pounds--is an extraordinary piece of work, and it represents facsimile production at its finest, especially in our strictly limited version that reproduces the late 10th century binding done in Trier, considered to be the finest book cover of the Ottonian era.

Mountain View, CA, 5 Jan. 1982. Letter. Crease marks from folding. With original envelope. Near Fine. AUTOGRAPHED LETTER SIGNED of 4 pages. About personal matters but primarily concerned with making corrections in an interview eventually published in the Webster Review in 1985. Mentions Kipling, Dickens, Trollope, and others, as well as his being president of the British Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Regarding his WATERSHIP DOWN and a character from De la Mare's THE THREE MULLA-MULGARS, Adams says, "Nod & Fiver are similar in remaining weak, but in developing authority as their story develops. I did not say that Fiver's vision of man derived from the Nod-Andy Battle episode...." Along with a copy of the magazine containing the interview, copies of the interviewer's letters to Adams, and two copies of the manuscript of the interview--one the final copy and the other with some questions and answers not used in the final version.
